Children aren't the majority because they're all holed up in games like Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite and Friday Night Funkin'.
Meanwhile most the Deltarune autists were former autistic Undertale kiddies, and are thus aware of how they caused Undertale to be "cringe" and don't want a repeat of that, so they keep their autism and degeneracy on the downlow.

I haven't really played Deltarune because I hate episodic shit but didn't Toby Fox give out the first chapter for free and the most recent chapter for free because he was trying to be nice for Covid poorfags? That was nice of him. But still, fuck episodic games.

      Anonymous

Yeah if you want he's got an itchio page and/or you can grab it from steam.
Bear in mind if you're playing on linux, you'll need to grab DXVK or a certain room late in chapter 2 will not function properly.

      Anonymous

Toby says he intended to release the game all at once, but
      1. Chapter 1 was released as a demo because he was trying to make the game more or less on his own like Undertale but realized he was in way over his head and needed to find a team
      2. Chapter 2 was released for free because of COVID and because the team wanted to put something out after three years of basically nothing (while they experimented with moving the game to another engine and then COVID fucked everything up)
      3. In the future, Chapters 3-5 and (presumably) 6-7 will be released together (paid) because Toby now sees this as the best compromise between complete vs episodic release and the devs (and fans) wanting to see the results of their work sooner than later

As long as you're familiar with Undertale, knowing the characters and understanding the setting, that's fine. There's not much to be gained by actually playing through it yourself, aside from appreciating how much smoother Deltarune's battle system is.
It's "a game to play after Undertale" because a big part of your intended experience with the game is noticing and thinking about what's different from Undertale (and what's not so different).

Genocide is way shorter but you 100% don't do it until you've done everything else. How long it takes you depends on how much you struggle with the superbosses but reasonable estimate is like 2-4 hours.

It's less about "fucks up your game" and more about the themes of the story, but yeah
The vast majority of people knew how it worked going in and just did Pacifist->True Pacifist into Genocide
There's a lot of cool stuff you can only see in Neutral routes but it's a lot easier to just look it up on Youtube instead of playing the whole game over again just for some minor variations

7 years on, I think it's a mistake to have the main trailer for Steam Undertale be "PACIFIST OR GENOCIDE" or whatever it is in big letters. Neutral route has a lot going on and the trailer should just not let coming generations know true pacifist is possible. That said, Undyne dying a miserable death in neutral made me cry after years of having never done neutral.

This is most likely the reason why deltarune advertizes that its going to have one ending. Still it looks like majority are going to do mostly just full blown genocide/pacifist playthroughs, but that's because people are retarded

Having a bitter ending in Undertale where Undyne desperately tries to not die and nearly everyone was dead was so much more meaningful than being told to not hurt the precious pixels and get the best ending first try.
Deltarune was pretty great too where, in chapter 1, I just had to leave quickly because everyone hated me and I thought that was the only option. Then in chapter 2, seeing everything mostly ok but Berdley losing his arm and the Queen looking around Castle Town and finding none of her subjects there really hit hard

Even then, Toby seems to be cooking up some really interesting stuff for those that dare tread all over the place.
There's the Twisted Sword which requires the Thorn Ring, but you can't keep it if you commit to Snowgraving Berdly, so you need to abort the route on him and take it back before Noelle leaves the party later on.

I also think neutral>pacifist in undertale, but mostly because i think Omega Flowey complete mogs God of hyper death Asriel as a final boss.

                Anonymous

It'd be so badass if after enough neutral endings, Flowey gets pissed, he says something like "you just wanted to see me again huh? In that hellish state? Fine! you've worn me down, I'll have fun tearing into you BIT BY BIT" and then you get to fight omega flowey again anytime you do a neutral route again. I do like that you can only do the fight once tho. You can do the sans and asriel fight as many times as you want. But flowey is only once

You can only fight him once and in every neutral route after that he says "lets just get this over with" absorbing the souls but then cutting to the ending. He knows hes going to lose so he doesn't waste youre time with a boss fight

My first Undertale playthrough was genocide but i ended up sparing monster kid. I went in completely blind(it was at the time when this game hasn't exploded yet) and i must say that i made the right choice. Undyne melting to death was absolute kino, and ending where alphys wished me death was even better, to this day i belive that this is the best route of this game as this shows perfectly how would a group of people react to typical RPG protag if the game made sense - genocide route kind of focused too much on meta commentary than actually telling the story.

                >genocide route kind of focused too much on meta commentary than actually telling the story
It did and it didn't. I think Sans is one of the greatest fictional characters of all time but that's only IF you have the context from genocide. He doesn't pontificate on the metaness of the route, but more so comments on his role in the world and the fact that you're killing his friends. Thinking on it now, genocide doesn't really get that meta at all. It's all contextualized.

That just makes sense though, there's no reason to half-ass it. Chapter 1 doesn't matter (aside from how you deal with Jevil), but Chapter 2 gives you a clear incentive to SPARE people. It also presents just FIGHTing everyone as a valid option since the super duper fucked up stuff is a separate thing you have to go out of your way to do, instead of just being the natural consequence of grinding.

The Berdley thing is specific to his fights and the Queen thing is only if you failed to recruit anyone. Neutral implies you're doing more of a mix, but again, there's no real reason to half-ass it (so far).
If anything it seems like getting the ultimate Neutral/True Ending might involve having both a "good" savefile and a "bad" one, or edging the game to hit very specific requirements that aren't just kill counters.
It's not really comparable with Undertale in this way

Well, I'm not saying that conditionally on my speculation about the ending, I just think the FIGHT/SPARE dichotomy isn't nearly as foundational to Deltarune's design as it was to Undertale's. I'm pretty sure Toby's even on the record saying that the only reason it's in the game is because it was in Undertale, and I think that shows with how much Chapter 2 does to refine it now that it's a committed feature.
The whole moral of Chapter 1 was Ralsei learning that violence is sometimes necessary and Susie learning that ONLY being violent does more harm than good. Even as a "pacifist" you're encouraged to to do damage with ACTs that become special moves and fights you can't clear without some form of violence.
