It doesn't really work outside of a cabinet. It's too bulky, too flimsy, the height isn't right, it's too big too fit on a desk, too big and flimsy on your lap.

With a balltop, that's the beauty of it. Grip it however is the most comfortable for you. The shape allows for different grips unlike a battop which only really is held in one way. It's spherical, SPHERICAL!

It depends on what you're trying to do and how you're playing.

If it's a shmup then the best grip is finger-grip.

But if it's a fighting game, then you probably want to get the most out of the square, or octagonal gate by ball-gripping.

You can hold it in various ways, there's a lot of autism surrounding that, I've seen people play with the palm of their hand facing up. Maybe it's better to find the type of game you're playing, and copy some pro player's hand position for that. I will say I've been told over and over holding the ball with your fingers is not correct.

You can hold it any way that's comfortable for you, some people grip the ball from below like a wine glass, some people grip it from the side like a flight stick, personally I do something inbetween with the stick between my middle and ring fingers but my hand parallel to it. It gives me a lot of different angles to push the stick from with different fingers so I don't have to do much arm movement which I find slower and less accurate.

that can be granted because of weird shit like SOCD on dpad+analog (which was never intended by devs), but another thing, playing on pad long term seems ergonomically fricking ass. Before the smash stick prototype and smashbox were made, Smashies believed Gamecube pad was ideal even though it fricked up their wrists. Smash stick was created as a response for that very problem.
I wish someone actually published a study that tested the ergonomic quality of every controller option, maybe someone from berkeley in that FG course.

Your ring finger is weaker so certain movement motions you need to put motion into your hand somewhat to do well. This will not effect you until a fairly high level though.

Most games nowadays don't need the intercardinals. You can get away with tapping forward, down, then back, then up in sequence before hitting whichever button you need to press afterward. Also don't usually need to do the full 360, can get away with just a 3-quarter circle motion.

I grew up in the arcades and I have tried pretty much every type of fightstick, pad and hitbox over the years and the conclusion I've come up with is that objectively hitbox is the superior choice. BUT, depending on the game and character you play the advantage can be negligible. If you play charge characters like Guile a leverless controller is by far the superior choice, it when it comes to characters like Zangief that are slow the speed advantage of the pad and hitbox is not really necessary, also doing 360 and 720 motions feel a lot more comfortable on stick in my opinion. Thanks for reading my blog.

You have to let go of down on a stick too.
SOCD was never the reason Guile was good on a pad. Letting go of one button and pressing another is just fundamentally faster than moving a stick to the other side.

There are a wide variety of sticks If you mean the grips other anons have taken care of that, but realize that it will also depend a bit on the type of 'lever" (ie the stick on the fight stick). The good thing is most tops can attach to any level since they have the same bushing and screw-in capability so feel free to swap them
        >Balltop
This is the JP arcade standard Lots of ways to grip that are comfortable
        >Battop
Korean levers tend to use these as do a totally different style of "American/Western" parts (note that very few aftermarket sticks today or prefabs use American style anything becauseof different measurements among other stuff , but IndustriasLorenzo still makes the old school stuff that isn't shit but its more for restoring Western cabs). A good variety too ,especially for Koreans.
        >BULLETT / Nobi style
A new shape close to a gearshift made popular by a pro player. Kind of best of both worlds.

Pic related is a rare "Maizora" iridescent kit with the iridescent bullet top itself + a special iridescent titanium version of the phreakmod link EX groove removable shaft.

        oooooooooooooo that shit looks cool.

          Anonymous

Its actually hard to capture how it looks in a picture because the color shifts, but yeah it really does. The pic I grabbed was from a stupidly expensive modded Qanba Obsidian done by Arcade Shock that cost like $900 - https://arcadeshock.com/products/qanba-obsidian-customized-super-mod - its not longer available, but the page is still up. You can see the stick top and the shaft in other views, as in pic related.

Oh for those who may not be aware, as in the pic, the removal that is only possible because of the "Phreakmods EX Link" which is replacement shaft for part of a lever, by default its normally for Sanwa JLF/JLX (including HORI Hayabusa) style, but there are modules for certain Seimitsu levers too. It replaces the shaft of the lever into a two piece setup that will allow you to totally remove the visible shaft top, making travel easier. Oh that thing on the bottom the "dust washer" is separate, you can use whichever you like as they're kind of standardized. Note that the Link EX Groove comes in a bunch of standard colors made from aluminum and is considerably cheaper, so its a nice upgrade if you want something like it. The version pictured is - https://arcadeshock.com/collections/frontpage/products/phreakmods-ex-link-titanium-multi-color-evo-launch - still in stock, but a single production run for EVO last year, made from titanium with an iridescent/maziora style finish but way more expensive than the standard.

huh that's neat, i definitely want to try that out

Sure thing. They're referred to as Nobi or Bullet tops and there are a lot of standard colored ones, notably from Seimitsu who's the one Nobi partnered with to make the lever that debuted the top style. https://arcadeshock.com/collections/balltops/products/seimitsu-nobi-bullet-top-choose-color - there were several special colors made for last year's EVO and one of them was the Maziora and Tortoiseshell finishes having a higher price and lesser availability.

Worth noting there are also alternate BIG balltops.
If you have one of the cheap membrane sticks like picrel it probably has a real 45mm balltop glued on that you can unscrew with a bit of force.

Yep, just find one w/ M6 threads

Also if by spicland you mean Mexico or somewhere else in latin america, yeah its probably faster as they're in US California I think. If you mean Spain proper then that's really lucky; I don't know much of the EU suppliers. For NA they're primarily

              >ArcadeShock (west coast based
              >FocusAttack (east coast based
              >Paradise Arcade Shop (Hawaii based)

Each has some cross over, but also their own unique products only they stock.

Is this good for a beginner? I want to get an arcade stick (not just for FGs but for retro games like shmups in general), but I don't want to spend like 300-400 bucks on Razer/Qanba/Victrix/etc.

What are you going to be playing on? PC? Any consoles? Any prefab arcade stick will unfortunately be somewhat limited to what they can connect, usually either Playstation OR Xbox not both (and Xbox is a lot rarer). I'm not sure if that stick is worthwhile but it looks decent enough; not sure how it compares to the other 8bitdo stick but either could be good first sticks and reasonably easy to mod.

If you aren't really focused on being wireless (and Xbox specific) you may also want to check out some other cheaper sticks such as the Mayflash F500 V2 or F500 Elite (elite comes with Sanwa lever and buttons already) or F700 if you want wireless.. If you're willing to spend a little more, there are some Qanba or HORI (don't bother with Razer) that come in well below the $300-400 you don't want to spend. Hori Fighting Stick Alpha , or Qanba Titan (mid level) Qanba Obsidian 2 (higher level), are their newest offerings that are in the 200-300 range generally.

Of course you can always look at the custom world, or even chinese knockoffs on aliexpres or whatever to save cash, but eventually you may want to get a custom enclosure and build your own. If you're wiling to spend a bit more some day, I suggest JasensCustoms. Fantastic enclosures and swappable layouts; I'm waiting for their Panzer 4 XL.

Depends on what game you are going to play.

Koreans are not stuck in the past using a fricking square gate and their levers are different. Some are good for Tekken, Some are okeish for everything, Others are better for 2D.

If you mean which physical buttons are for which game functions (X, O, Triangle etc) then you can bind them as you like. If you mean ho the buttons are arranged physically, the angle is a little different but check out either "Namco Noir" or "Sega P1' / "Sega P2" cab layouts that have the same arc'd buttons as opposed to the more common Taito Vewlix style where the first button is a little lower and then the following 3 in each row are straight in a line; Vewlix seems to be one of the more common "default" arcade stick layouts like on the OP's Mayflash F500 there.

I know you can arrange them however you like but just the set up of the back buttons being on the sides makes more logical sense for a monkey brained guy like me than the RB/RT then RT/LT on the right.

for Japanese style sticks, most use a wine glass style hold as seen in the image.
For Korean levers, you cup the stick and kinda tap/pull it into various directions.

I woldn't be able to use wineglass grip as my paws are meaty and fingers are thick like a man's are supposed to be unlike certain child sized paws.

Then just hold it however you want, as long as it is comfortable and execution feels slightly natural. The cup method can work for Japanese sticks too, but motions might be harder to perform.

I don't know, the argument this guy is making in the video is an awful lot like the argument people make in defense of expensive mechanical keyboards. And yet, in my experience, even 200 dollar mechanical keyboards start experiencing double typing issues after only 2-3 years of usage. Sure, in theory, it'd be nice if you could just spend big on one purchase and never have to buy that kind of product again. But in practice, it rarely seems to ever be that way.

MAYFLASH Wireless Arcade Stick F700 (new) would probably do you just fine as the sole arcade sticky.

A good custom all metal enclosure or one made of extremely durable plastic, with non Sanwa knock-off buttons, a quality lever, and good PCB will literally last you a lifetime. Yeah. He stopped for a bit but then got back into it with a new model. I have a Panzer 3i (I'd give a pic but its rather boring, no artwork on it...maybe I should anyway, but he overhauled the design and is on the Panzer 4 (aluminum instead of steel like the 3i, has a row of mini-buttons for ancillary stuff instead of the full size buttons and toggles on the 3i etc). I'm thinking of grabbing one for a rebuild - he actually has a super expensive unibody thing in the works now, but its all-button only and can't use standard Panzer 4 layouts unfortunately. I'm waiting for the 4 XL which will be able to do CrossUp style layouts or even Dual besides all of the existing ones.

Ah didn't know that they don't send to MX anymore at FocusAttack, that's too bad but glad arcadeshock is doing well for you. yeah looks like you've got a collection of Korean levers... I'm guessing thats a full collar Myoungshin Fanta on the Eotkki Omni and... On the older Razer there in that back ins that an ASindo Golden Lever? You like your Knee more than the Golden? Golden appears super expensive and customizable but I'm surprised you wouldn't be using it on your primary stick, but I guess the Knee must be that great.

Got one of these a couple weeks ago, gotta say these feel better than playing on pad but the learning curve is definitely there. Also movement on pad is just a tiny but faster. Looking to customize mine but haven't settled on art yet, do you guys get commissions?

When you decide on some art, you know that a few of the big shops like FocusAttack or ArcadeShock will do custom prints if you use their templates -t hey'll send you high end cardstock etc with your design. ArcadeShock and some others also do "printed plexi" where the designs are printed directly onto the plexi for a more durable and vibrant finish but its more expensive too; AS also does replacement panels too (ie aluminum or carbon fiber) a. The Hori Alpha is a really common stick so its easy to find support for stuff like that.

Maybe if you don't customize at all but any customization gets your prices jacked up to your uranus from what I saw, not worth it, would rather just get a cheap big brand fightboard instead.

I like it. Do you jack off while you play? I used to back in the sf5 days, matchmaking was so slow you could edge every time
