I really want to love this game, and have a full playthrough, but I've never been able to. Can you explain your fun with this game to me? In my eyes when playing it, it's a gigantic open world game, but there just isn't anything to find. The only things you find are a dungeon with loot you know is guaranteed - a heart piece. You can find weapons in places, but those break in 20 swings, so there is no sense of accomplishment in finding them. It's just a big open....nothing? It's pretty to look at, but nothing to do. Help me find the fun in the game.

Why can't you joyless Black folk just wander and enjoy the scenery? Why do you NEED to find some cool item or objective to have fun? BotW was most fun when I just picked a random direction and fricked around with no real objective in mind.

At least other games where the point is exploration without finding anything - there are story elements. So you have npcs that tell you about the world and there is a story. BoTW barely has a story

That's good though. Games don't really need story as a point of emphasis.

    1. Only the shit weapons break in 20 swings. If you find an elemental blade or something it lasts much longer.
    2. If you find a weapon spawn, it'll respawn after every blood moon. Knowing where the weapon spawns easily allows you to stock up on favoured weapons on the fly when moving between point A to point B across the map.

Not in a way that could change your mind, but sure.
I just liked the game. I had a lot of fun doing all of the sidequests, exploring the entire map, beating every shrine, collecting every memory and collecting all of the armor. I also had a lot of fun just shieldsurfing and paragliding from interesting vistas. I really dug the game's setting and found all of the dialogue charming. I'm pretty sure I spoke to every NPC in the game. I even bought the DLC for this game, and I also thought that was great.
I can honestly say that I had a lot of fun with everything in this game except the dungeons. They were all surprisingly weak except for Hyrule Castle.

For me, I liked the exploration, locations, characters. Everything about the world was awesome. It was great mapping the world out and trying to find clever ways to move around.

I just hated the tedium, and it killed my interest in the long run. Shrines started to repeat. Cooking was something I dreaded doing. I couldn't rely on weapons I liked, and it caused me to become risk adverse when it came to combat.

I wanted to explore, but it felt like the game was making me claw for every second of it. If weapons had more durability, or the option to repair them, that's be fine. If cooking had the ability to cook in batches, that'd be fine. I get every shrine can't be unique when the map is littered with dozens. I don't know, maybe, at least, try to mask it with different textures or color schemes.

Of course not. Ganker, reddit, twitter, tiktok, whatever platform are filled with "What movie should I watch?" "What TV show is the best?" "What game should I play?". People constantly want someone to guide them to their own enjoyment. Everyone says they should play this particular game because its amazing, then get frustrated when they don't find it equally as enjoyable. They start to think something must be wrong with them.

I think movies/TV is worse though because of all the rating websites. People won't even bother starting a movie sometimes if it doesn't have a good rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "No else liked it, clearly I won't either!" and vice versa.

The worst part of the game is weapons breaking. No point in any combat in the game except where you HAVE to like in shrines or bosses. Every enemy in the open world NEEDS to be skipped. No point in killing them because they give nothing, and do nothing but break your weapons. There is literally 0 reason to fight anything unless you 100% have to. Real good game design there.

      Anonymous

What’s annoying is the fanboys cite that the weapons breaking forces you too adopt different fight styles and not rely on one weapon.

White. BoTW would have been fun if there were things to actually discover my exploring. Ways to discover lore of the world, equipment, food recipes, quests, stories, etc. But there is nothing. Literally nothing. The only thing to find are shrines with a heart fragment, and weapons that break after a few swings. It's a giant empty world with nothing to discover. I wanted to have an adventure, not roam around aimlessly with nothing to find.

Are you sure you white? This post reads like it's algorithm generated, which makes me think you are some kind of microcephalic refuse of asia. Sure you don't have Indian ancestry?

You don't seem to understand exploring. The essence of exploring is wanting openness for the sake of it and the sheer act of getting there and seeing being the reward. What you are describing is not exploration. You are asking for wages for work. You are not spiritually worthy of The Legend of Zelda. I would recommend that you instead develop an addiction to a Korean MMO. That sounds far more your speed.

My mom got cancer 4 years ago and wanted to get a heritage test before she died. Results: Mother - 97% british isles Father - 93% british isles 5% scandinavia.

I understand exploring. Take a game like morrowind for example. You have this vast open world where you never know what's over the next hill. You find a dwemer ruin which inside you find books from their ancient civilization and learn about their past and disappearance. You find a bracer amongst the ruins which gives you a boost to your defenses. You continue exploring over the next hill and find a small hamlet which the townsfolk say are being attacked by foul beasts resurrected by a rogue necromancer. You adventure and explore the countryside to find clues to point you in his direction until you ultimately find his lair and slay him and his minions. Along the way you find new plants you've never seen that you can test use in your alchemical concoctions. Inside his lair you read his notes and learn of his troubled past where his necromantic practice went from trying to resurrect the love of his life, to going mad with power. Much of his writings are intact, and you learn a few new spells from his research.

Notice the difference here? There is adventure and things to find out about the world. Lore, living and breathing npcs which facilitate this adventure and exploration. You never know what you will find around the next corner. In BoTW you know exactly what you will find. A shrine with a piece of a heart and maybe a weapon that will break in 20 swings - that's it. It's dull, it's boring, and it's bad.

You've managed to accurately describe my personal feelings towards this game better than I have. And before anyone tries to use the excuse of "making up your own story/lore," that's not what I'm paying Nintendo for. I don't want to have to make my own fun. I'm paying Nintendo to give me something I want to explore, not giving me a sandbox and going, "You figure it out!"

The ass-end of Britain, clearly. More seriously, apologies if you actually are British. I understand that the place is so bad that it can absolutely shred decent human stock and reduce you to states like this.

Are you familiar with the concept of "owned space"? A typical open-leaning RPG I see as made out of owned space. Just a lot of it. Fixed, constructed experiences made to be engaged with in a certain way, with the openness being in picking your direction. I see this as feeling too much like a typical video game made of "levels" only the "level select screen" is which direction you walk. Bethesda made this story of the necromancer, they put the bracer there, etc. You are moving through their space.

The world is not facilitated by living and breathing elements. These are constructed stock elements in a tailored experience. Of course all games are this to some extent or other, they are constructed works, but moreso in morrowind than Breath of the Wild. You haven't actually explained what you believe adventure is or why the Morrowind quest experience is more of an adventure than just playing Max Payne 3. Morrowind isn't really a more *living* world than the limited and linear Max Payne 3. It all stands in place waiting for you to walk to your mark and follow the cue.

I never know what I'll find around the corner in any game if I haven't played it anymore. As for what *is* there, I think we have greatly diverging notions of value in fiction. I consider "lore" to be spiritual poison and the bane of modern genre fiction. By lore I basically mean in-world information/data which is not expressive of any greater artistic intent. Nintendo could have written 500 variations on "this cave was the lair of the evil daz-naldo, who envied the technology of the gerudo and conspired with the bokoblins to concoct a poison to..." but what would it mean? Nothing. It's junk. Fodder. Open air is far more inspiring.

Ok, I love to wander around and just see what I run into. What will take me where and what feels right at the time. I go in one direction until I find a quest giver and do that, or a shrine, or see a Korok puzzle. These things are fun. It also helps that there are a bunch of other hidden things around the enviroment, so I'm always engaged with something. Walking to my destination isn't a drag like it is in other games, because there is always something on the way and movement in the game is a blast, especially once you figure out how to make instant updrafts and don't have to worry about hard stamina requirements for climbing. Loading up on hot peppers is more than enough once you light them on fire and you can easily do that with either flint or a flamesword of some kind. I can play it over and over again, because there is always a new way to experience it.

    >Can you explain your fun with this game to me?
    Certainly!

It is simply but THE most open-ended, non-patronizing adventure game to be released in many decades.
The fact that an AAA game, one made by Nintendo at that, treated you like a functional human being that has most likely beaten many games in the past, was simply put intoxicating.
Being able to go where ever you want, when you want, how you want, and do what ever you want, is practically unheard of in majority of modern AAA open-world games; you are practically always walled-off of certain areas & features until you follow the established story/mission structure the devs lied under all that landmass.
This doesn't apply to BotW, and for that alone, it would've been exciting as hell already.

But BotW goes a step further, and actually focuses on making the world of Hyrule this "main character" of its own. A "living", truly interactive world, where you can freely play and experiment with various systems and simulations, resulting crazy amount of clever tricks and emergent gameplay. There's simply as many ways to play the game as there's people on this planet; it's the type of game that makes you go "hmm.. I wonder if I could do THIS in this game...?", and in most cases you indeed can pull off your crazy ideas as well.

Too many people seem to think that tick-box tasks + tangible collectibles = all there is to "content".
While BotW has that stuff, lots of it actually, it is a game that is mostly fueled by the player's own honest desire for exploration and discovery.
You'll often set your next goal, only to get distracted by something curious / beautiful along the way, leading you to an adventure that may last hours. It was fun to find new food items & be the little Gordon Gourmet.
If I saw a new enemy or environmental challenge, it was fun to come up innovative / panic solutions to deal with them.

I didn't even start doing story stuff in BotW before 80 hours had passed.
    That's how immersed I was!
