People who create video games are nerds that enjoy reading this stuff and they spend most of their days coding because that's fun to them. Just let them do their thing.

Pretty much but nowadays it's easier than ever to program a game pretty poorly but have it become a success Lethal company is one example.

If this makes you feel better:
Not a single one of these people does anything valuable as their entire livehood is within a faulty system, which validated them for being shitheads and grifters. Think of them as bugs who would and will collapse when the nest goes down.
All of this shit will one day backfire, as its unable to sustain itself forever. Its impossible for a society to last that long if you have a lot of people like this who do not create anything valuable, yet somehow make money.

Video games now are a good example of this as you can see the moment DEIbux dried up, everything started to collapse.

I used to work for big tech and the men and women are both like this. The companies were created by people who wanted to make things that others would find useful. iPhone, search, social media (even if we all hate it now). Now they are full of people who work there because they heard about the money and perks of working at a big tech company, and so they produce senseless products; no one can think about any other "innovation" besides VR because they don't truly want to help people anymore. The smaller company I worked at before my big tech company had far smarter people and more motivated people.

I worked for a pretty small Fintech start up for a bit and I can also confirm it was like this. These companies had so much money to throw around before interest rates started skyrocketing, which led to a lot of hiring. The proliferation of WFH jobs added to this. I had a lot of days where I had nothing to do and was spending a lot of time dicking around, while still being at the top of most KPIs for my team. It was actually kind of nerve racking because it felt like I should have had more to do. It was even weirder when I dodged a couple of layoff rounds once the gravy train started slowing down, realizing other people were being even less productive. I felt like pic related a lot of the time.

              Anonymous

I don't care about the company because the company doesn't care about me. Even at our high salaries, we are in no way being equally compensated for the efficiency of the work we automate (implying techbro). I will care if I get RSUs though, but those are few and far in between, and usually still not equal to the amount of value I produce. I pocket the excess money I have and invest it in businesses that will do the work for me, as well as other financial instruments. Maybe one day I can start my own business then on my own terms.
              >your only accomplishment in life will be kicking the can of your bloodline down the alleyway
The only bloodline benefiting in your scenario are the C-suite execs and major shareholders. Don't let your family suffer because you want to be yoked by Chad eternally.

Wage doesn't come from the amount of labor you do, it comes from responsibility. If what you automate isn't especially valuable, then your work isn't especially valuable, period. If you want to start your own business, then you need to actually understand where wages come from and what the "value" of labor is.

              >Grind their whole lives for 40k in Cali
Bro, you can easily make 50-60k a year working as a fricking bartender / server at a lot of places. I was making $30 an hour bartending at a small family owned Italian restaurant out of college. If I took it seriously, I could have gone to a more upscale restaurant or a club, where I had acquaintances making upwards of 80k a year doing that. I'm not trying to diss people stuck with a shitty lot in life and no opportunities, but at some point it becomes a you problem if you're only making 40k after "grinding" your whole life out. It sounds like you're bitter that people are more pragmatic than you when it comes to pursuing employment. Unironically go learn how to weld and start making 100k a year after a few years. I got a buddy in Canada doing that right now.

yes, and as you get better and better at programming it shifts from being sad at yourself for not knowing things, to being sad at the developers of the tools you're using because they made moronic tradeoffs you wouldn't have.
this frustrates you so much you think "i'll just do it myself, frick those idiots" you then waste years of your life writing stuff that works in place of what those morons built only to never actually deliver the game you set out to build.
you really gotta have a deliverable-based mindset and not get too hung up on perfectionism otherwise you'll never actually make games.

when you start a tech company you end up hiring like 300 men to work there, and after a while people start to notice so you get company mandates to basically hire any women that walks through the door for whatever roles you can come up with.
I worked at a crypto exchange, we were told we're not hiring junior developers unless they were women in which case we would create roles for them and dangle them off whatever team we could.
we still only had like 2 women apply.

I whack it to furry porn, which means whenever the DEI survey goes around at work I mark myself down as a neurodivergent queer with a minority religious belief. It's ridiculous, but it's how the game is played nowadays and you're just leaving money on the table if you don't play along.

It's certainly not going to make your chances worse, and if the company has ANY sort of DEI metric they have to meet HR would love to be able to tick the Queer box. You honestly may as well, it may have a positive effect during the pre-interview screenings when the algorithms sort through the CVs looking for keywords (of which they/them is probably one), and it'll make no difference in the interview itself since it's a lawsuit minefield to ask any questions about gender shit during the process.

If you want to make a game, start by picking a game engine and looking at tutorials for it. Godot is fine for learning, so if you can't decide pick that. Do not get hung up with "what is the best choice for X" because the best choice is to start doing.
Making a video game is hard work, but if you train your ability to problem solve you can get through it. One last thing, making a video game requires more than programming. Art, sound, gameplay design, and so on.

Aw, sweetie, you don't have to learn to program to make popular videogames.
Just look at Yanderedev, he never learned and he made one of the most popular games there is!
I bet if you tried really hard, you could be just like him too!

Don't worry about the quality of the code until you actually have a game.
Learning how to write working code isn't hard. It's when you have to start thinking about optimizing data management and actual shit like that it suddenly becomes very difficult, but that's not what you should even aim for if you're a solo dev.
In the old days, games were made by people who actually classify as computer scientists nowadays, because that was basically the only classification of a professional computer user back in that day; as such, you had actual Harvard and MIT students and graduates writing low-level code in what was almost entirely uncharted territory.

But if you're just a solo dev that wants to make a game, stop sweating over the code. Learn the basics, make all the shitty if-else statements and data duplication mistakes you want, and if the finished game runs like shit, THEN start worrying about the code.

Solodev is a meme, you can't make your dream game alone. You need money and relations. You need a few artists and a lot of little hands to build the game following orders. And maybe some good devs if you need your own engine.

OP do not listen to this moron. Gamdev is more accessible now than it's ever been, and AI will eventually make it even easier. Learn Godot.

Go to /agdg/ and tell me how many games look like they could sell well? That's right, 0
The best they can do is shitty platformers. If you have any ambition whatsoever, you need a team.

Oh and btw I didn't say it was hard, but it's a lot of tedious work so you need little hands to do it.
        >AI
        Two more weeks

Solodev isn't a meme, the average artist will gladly torpedo the entire project to make a quick buck if you try to make a team. If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself.

Doing everything yourself is how you'll get nothing done

Solodevs usually can't offer a snackbar on a rooftop for 2h of work per week
What he needs is relations as I said earlier so he can find someone trustworthy to build a project together

I assume you guys would just be collaborating remotely. That's what most artists prefer....well workers really.

no idea about the book, but "data structures and algorithms"-related shit is the most useful thing for a codelet
language-agnostic and the sort of thing that will make sure you are not yandev-tier moron it's not about his if-else-if chains, everything else is much more detrimental than mere "bad practices"

You don't need it. The people who programmed their own games in the 80s did so because they were fricking around with BASIC on C64, not because they absorbed tons of theoretical knowledge that they did not need for the most part. You'll be on a far more efficient part to make a game if you simply learn the basics of any modern programming language and then start fricking around in any of the popular game engines.

Why are they using C# when most games are programmed in C++ and C# is just web development when it comes to the two types.

      Be consistent.

Doesn't really matter since you can apply whatever concepts/patterns you learn in other languages. It's still a pretty good beginner book for people who don't just want to learn dry material.

        Also this

        >C# is just web development
??? What? Unity runs on C#

You can say what you want about Unity, it's still a good place to start messing around with small game stuff before considering writjng your own engine or whatever.

        Anonymous

C# is a fine language for games even outside of Unity, you just have to know how the GC works and be mindful of your allocations (just like you would in C++)

That book is relevant to some small, hard parts of games. Most of the rest of it is straightforward and the main challenge is to keep it that way as you pile on more layers of functionality.

    yes
and the worse part is people who really know how to code don't make video games so you have to do the work yourself unless you're a sellout.

Get a book on anna’s archive that teaches you about programming through coding a unity game in C#. You want to learn a specific thing, so start from that. Seeing your efforts give something in real time will motivate you to go further.
