Bubsy 3D, when you get past its Atari Jaguar-level graphics, is actually an alright game. Bubsy really fell when The Woolies Strike Back came out and it turned into another generic platformer.

I used to have Super Bubsy on an old XP machine, it was pretty good (though later I tried installing it on a ThinkPad X60s and it didn't work, does XP SP3 break DOS compatibility?)

The SNES version has the best version of the soundtrack

Played it recently and was surprised to find out that it's not as bad as YouTube grifters make it out to be.
My problem is that despite it playing like a sonic clone, there's no ring mechanic, so you inevitably die the second you collide with anything. If you play it like the 2D Oddworld games it's actually pretty fun.
Wish someone would make a romhack that mutes Bubsy, though.

I played it as a kid in the 90s on my real sega genesis, it was pretty shitty. if you run too fast, something the game basically makes you do, you can die by running into the wall....not a bottomless pit, not an enemy, hitting the fucking wall

        Anonymous

Running into walls doesn't kill Bubsy. They just knock him to the ground and stalls him for several seconds while he clears his head from the hit. You're more likely going to die from running into something actually lethal first.

A lot of multiplats are better on mega drive/genesis due to it often being the leading platform and the sega is 320pixels wide vs 256 for the snes. Snes usually gave a cropped view as a result.

Note this is just a general rule, exceptions always exist.

I had both games as a kid and i loved mascot platformers and still do.

Bubsy is a SHITTY game. But not to the point of CULT. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone BUT:

    1) people who never played it and listened to AVGN and other retards think it's like the "very famous ultra bad game that everybody (no) makes fun of"

    2) And now after so man years of it being ridiculed there is a new wave of people who instead pretend that they actually like the game and it's not that bad and is even good.

    Holy fuck just stop.
Bubsy is just a crappy mediocre platformer. Sure you can play it but you would rather now. And i refuse to believe that anyone actually tried to finish it.

There are so many actually good and fun platformers like
    1) Captain Havoc
    2) Radical Rex
    3) Zero the camikaze squirrel
    4) that mohawk rat from SNES
    5) Super Widget from SNES
    etc.

But people talk only about this crappy shitty nobody just because overbloated meme.

You've got to admit it's fun to build up speed, chain jumps together and glide over the whole level, that or you just don't get it. Not all platformers have to control or behave the same, and it's a shock to me that someone who supposedly has such a huge boner for scotformers legitimately can't fathom the idea of others liking something with a few flaws here and there. How can you even say you're a fan of these games if you can't tolerate something that slightly breaks from the norm? The biggest thing that convinced me that this game had SOVL overload was reading the manual. The first 20 odd pages are a comic that sets up the story and the rest is humorously written by bubsy himself, like the wario land manuals. the whole thing is really charming. open your mind a little

I was an actual kid in the 90s with these shitty games and playing them because like any other kid you could ask only 1 game once in a while and then you have to play it because there is no other option. Unlike you. Bubsy fucking sucks it's terrible.

Holy shit what a pretentious gay driven by HYPE.

Yeah I mean another thing is too that of course people playing this shit for like 10 minutes in an emulator are going to think "this isn't that bad pfff" because it's not the real experience of having bought the game, or even having it be your rental, and realizing you could have had a game that wasn't jank but still having to dedicate your time to it since it's now yours, which was always the bitch of shit games back in the day. You didn't just accept a game was shit as a fun novelty, you tried to make the best of it because it was a commitment, which made the disappointment that it wasn't worth the money worse.

        >people playing this shit for like 10 minutes in an emulator are going to think "this isn't that bad pfff"
        this.
I'm sure people never tried to actually "play" Bubsy. It's so fucking awful.
People probably run emulator (i highly doubt they actually bought a Bubsy cartridge) and fuck around - the graphics are colorful and it looks funny - you can run around and glide - what not to like!

I actually played it a lot as a kid and it's one of the first games I remember beating. It's a game I still come back to every couple of years. The first game on SNES has always been good fun with a nice graphics and music. It could have been a great series if every follow up didn't turn out a disaster.

Bubsy shows why you need something like Sonic's rings mechanic in a platformer where you can move really fast. Bubsy can only take one hit - the game tries to balance things out by giving you a lot of lives and checkpoints, but almost any time you pick up speed you're going to get killed.
Sonic avoids this with the rings mechanic, plus his roll and jump being able to hit most enemies from enemy angle. Bubsy isn't horrible but very flawed.
Bubsy 2 on paper should be much better (multiple hits, non linear design, power ups and bonus games) but it's much less fun to play somehow.
Never played the Jag one and I'm not going to pretend Bubsy 3D is any good but that autistic Youtuber who has played each level 10000 times is pretty funny.

git gud. no seriously, git gud. you play bubsy after you beat sonic for the tenth time and think "man the rings make this game way too fucking easy". you aren't ready to take off the training wheels. go back.

I actually really liked the second one and it's the only one I beat as a kid. Something about the weird worlds you entered was fun. Although I also really like the overall aesthetic of the first one. I think the surreal houses in the first level left an imprint on me.

Bubsy is such a weird anomaly. Because the only reason why the character is memorable out of all the other failed scrimblos with "bad attitude" is due to the peculiar and odd marketing to the point of even getting him a pilot for a cartoon show when the game itself wasn't even out yet. Then Bubsy 3D came out and it being horrible permanently solidified his name in the gaming industry.

  16. 2 weeks ago

Bubsy is proof that Sonic would've been a lot harder to sell to the public without the ring system as a health bar. But granted Sonic does have more appealing graphics, music, and levels otherwise.

      Anonymous

It's not just rings come on. Whole game design is better.

Even as a kid i could do a speedrun through level without getting hurt/losing rings. And then with collecting emeralds (in Sonic 3 i was able to do that during first Carnival level) you could basically EZ-run while being immortal.
So even if sonic didn't have rings and could die with 1 hit - you could still play it and have fun.

In Bubsy you CAN NOT do that - you can't freely speedrun the game - there is always some shitty level design or shitty enemy position and insta death.

in bubsy you should go very slowly and to be careful while the whole gimmick encourages going fast, the character himself goes too fast and jump is too high

Beat the original game in 3 days, because that's how long the lease time lasted in the 90s where I rented the games from.
Yes, you HAD to die a LOT of times since Bubsy was killed by pretty much anything that moves and the running segments often didn't let you enough time to react and avoid an enemy or hazard, tho there were a shit ton of extra lives and the game had passwords so you weren't forced to start all over again if you got a Game Over.
It was the version of Sonic for the Super Nes since at the time the console mascots were exclusives and you wouldn't see them in other consoles outside the odd hacked pirated game.

It's just that there are so many platformers especially on the SNES that it's hard to for a mediocre platformer to really be worth your time. It needs to have some appeal that really lines up with your taste.

Although yeah the youtubers don't help. There are literally thousands of indie games worse than bubsy.

Are you really talking about indie games in a discussion about a snes/genesis game

I'll repeat what I mean because you can't parse it, at least the way it was written last time.

Youtubers bad mouth Busby. That is to say they are saying that this game in particular is bad enough to call attention to. I am saying there are thousands of indie games worse than that, which they are silent on. So I find their attempts to bad mouth weak games a failure because they focus on some middling SNES platformers when there are thousands of games worse than that, with at more released every day on steam. So I disrespect the judgement of youtubers profoundly. The bad reputation of Bubsy partly comes from these youtubers whom I disrespect and thus I believe their influence is one coming from bad taste and is a negative type of influence.

Youtubers talking about Bubsy are 30+ year olds making videos for other 30+ year olds, it's about nostalgia, not new games. Know what board you're on? I haven't played a new platformer since Playstation 2.

I played it on a rental and felt like I got my $3 worth. I didn’t beat it or get very far into it. I never rented it again though. I remember it getting poor to
mediocre reviews at the time of release. But no, it’s really “not that bad”. It’s not a broken unplayable turd that slipped through QC.
