I agree that the final third is poorly paced, but I think people who make the sponge argument just didn’t fully understand the battle system. Especially if you’re playing Alphen you can deal massive damage to enemies.

        >but I think people who make the sponge argument just didn’t fully understand the battle system.
        There's nothing to understand.
The battle system forces you to go for Break QTEs to instakill things since they have bloated HP values and you do no damage, and if you play as anybody other than Alphen you do even less damage, it's garbage, and this is merely the tip of the iceberg of shit that is Arise's gameplay.

the reason the gameplay becomes worse over the game is because every boss fight was not designed like the field dragon.

the field dragon makes use of all your abilites to counter his movements, he can be counterspelled, blocked, knocked out of the air, and combod.

        MEANWHILE

rest of the big enemies and bosses are legit just sponges who cant be combod and have 0 abilities, so you just spam your build gainers to get an alphen knockdown.

There's no hyperbole, that's just what they are.
It's no mystery that Alphen is broken precisely because he can spam his universal burst arte knockdown and lockdown bosses whereas anyone else has to cope with spamming shit on enemies that don't react to anything other than scripted staggers.

By the endgame I don't think it's really spongey. The difficulty comes from the fact that your party pretty much die in seconds against bosses.

It's fine as a game imo. Some enemies are boring and I agree that some of the enemies in the latter half are sponges and the final dungeon is tedious. Still pretty fun though.
Some people complain about the story but the question is, why would they even try to play a jrpg for its story anyways? That Rinwell moment made me laugh honestly. There's no such thing as a jrpg with a good plot. Falcomgays are just moronic.

The concept of the mindless planet that really wants to survive, so it creates intelligent life with a single-minded purpose of establishing its survival is actually pretty good. It's just a shame the game was forced to lore dump all of it instead of giving us a proper second act because it actually felt closer to Xenoblade territory for a few hours.
Still, despite all the narrative problems of Arise it's way better than babashit and i'm glad we're out of those dark ages at the very least. The fact it also features an actual heterosexual romance that gets to its logical conclusion and with nearly zero fujogayottry is a huge bonus too.

Hideo Baba never had any passion to begin with. His entire era is what degraded the series to the cookie cutter collection of safe, marketable tropes designed to attract as many shit eaters from different groups as possible. There's a reason Zestiria in particular seems to have a fanbase on Ganker spamming that shitty e-girl to no end.
Is Arise as good as the top tier Tales? No. Is it better than most shit that was churned out in the last decade? Absolutely. It's a great model for future games in the series if they evolve the combat system.

It's not the "attempt" that managed the story to fizzle out, it's the fact they were forced to rush the second half insanely hard. The story concepts themselves are pretty solid by the standards of the series and Dohalim's arc in particular feels very Xeno-esque, you just read a frick ton of them through a literal infodump.

Gonna have to echo the sentiment of the thread. It's okay, but ultimately a disapointment.
The visuals are great, if unadventurous. The gameplay is fine, but it wears thin when every single enemy is a damage sponge. Everyone agrees the story's strong beginning is let down- it's just that nobody seems to be able to agree when.

Really good fricking gameplay, zero room to explore it in. You get a few middling sidequests when you finally get the party together, a couple more before you're railroaded on the endgame.
The best part about the franchise is that about a third of the way in you get the whole party, spend the second third learning their combos and the final third doing crazy endgame shit.
Lack of a world map kills that sense of exploration, you're not treking back to an earlier or hidden dungeon to unlock a secret ritual to fight a superboss, you're going back to the corridor at the start of the game to kill a bug that's literally just walking around in a circle.

In terms of a tales story, its individual moments have the best heights of the series, but the weakest ongoing narrative. Every villain is monster of the week, the rival to the antagonist doesn't get introduced until near the end of the game and basically has all the relevance of that one moronic assassin that tries to frick with Yuri in Vesperia. In Symphonia and Vesperia, the villains were a dynamic part of the world, they could have several schemes unfold before ultimately meeting their demise and could be involved with other villains. Arise is very compact and nothing anybody does affects the other, even though they're practically neighbors (world map needs to come back, seriously).

      Anonymous

      >Villains of the week
I don't see this as a bad thing. The focus is more on the areas they hold (types of oppression and struggles against it) and the main cast. I would not like to have anime villains fricking around on top of that. Not really interesting in Symphonia, and at times, silly. Also, the rival does get introduced earlier.

        Anonymous

Massively disagree. Even though the atmosphere of those areas is the best the franchise has done, the disappointment of how short lived they are means that they don't have as much lasting power and it diminishes the scope of the world into a peanut gallery for template dystopias.

Tales of Symphonia fulfilled on its premise of oppression a lot more than Arise because the characters get lulled into the sense of stability sugarcoating the oppression and then have the rug swept from under them and show how brutal the actual situation really is. Also they don't just nearly wrap up and resolve the area and move on like Arise, most of the time they can't immediately fix everyone's problems and they have to come back later on, you get to see how events in the game, including your own inexperienced party's interference, has affected the people. Arise has a conceptual showcase, Symphonia has towns

In Arise it's made clear that disposing of the tyrant never solves all the problems, and that the responsibility of solving them and rebuilding falls on the people, while the heroes continue on. Example, when returning to Cyslodia, they send help and someone to organize Ganath Haros.

I don't remember much of what you say happens in Symphonia. I tried replaying but couldn't get into it. But I think rebuilding Luin is a really neat.

Luin was great, I enjoyed the small addition of being able to either walk halfway across the world and do the story in reverse order and see some extra stuff alongside the expected route. It's hard to imagine that shit in a 3D JRPG nowadays.

I did that unintended route on my first playthrough back around when the game came out. I did all I could, but at some point I couldn't figure out how to progress. Years later I learned that it is actually possible to go that route. Really cool

And that reminded me how npcs react to later events. I think I actually missed at least some of them on my first playthrough, because I was busy saving the world. I was a bit suprised because the late game seems rushed. But yeah, there are issues the main cast talks about in lenght.

Kind of a show don't tell thing though, they just talk about it rather than experiencing it proper. After eliminating the villains though it wouldn't be very interesting to show, hence my issue with monster of the week setup, leaves nothing leftover to demonstrate consequences in a way that works for a video game.

I get what you're saying, and that consequences are important. I confess, I wasn't interested in exploring the fate of the cities further, when I was invested in all the other stuff that was going on. (The cast and how the story affects them) What the game deals with was enough for me, I just wish the later game was more polished.

Arise gameplay was good, but it was the sum of the parts that kept me playing. Dragon Quest interests me too, because I've heard it has pleasant downtime.

Who the FRICK plays this series for pure combat? It's dogshit, and it's always been dogshit. It's slow, unresponsive, with what feels like a second of input delay, it takes 40-60 hours to even get all the gimmicks that actually allow you to combo more or less seamlessly, the combat movement is a travesty both in 2d and 3d entries and feels like moving someone underground. Seriously, why even fricking bother when there's actual action games around?

Everything bad about Zestiria traces back directly to Graces, both in terms of gameplay mechanics and story. Hell even the art direction of the series went into complete dumpster around DOTNW and Graces, thank god for Arise unfricking at least that aspect.

                >Everything bad about Zestiria traces back directly to Graces
Not really, Zestiria being worse than Graces only points out how the forced merging of the teams created a massive internal disconnection in terms of what they wanted to do in terms of design, and of course Baba himself fricking up big time by not only trying to reinvent the wheel for no reason but succumbing to his simp side.
                >Hell even the art direction of the series went into complete dumpster around DOTNW and Graces
It didn't, Graces looks really good, so do the DS games, the art direction change didn't happen until Xillia/Xillia 2 where Bamco tried to God Eater-fy the series for lack of better terms, and even there things like the Vita remakes were unscathed, it wasn't until Zestiria that the changes truly settled in.
                >thank god for Arise unfricking at least that aspect.
Arise didn't unfrick anything, it is legitimately worse than both Zestiria and Berseria, somehow.

Zestiria doesn't even deserve to be compared to Graces. Zestiria copied Graces without even attempting to understand what made it work. Which is evident when unlock fusions and spend the rest of the game literally playing as two characters

Gameplay was pretty good in Scarlet Nexus, but the story wasn't just bad, it was exhausting. Literally mission after mission of fighting the exact same group of former allies and winning, only for them to walk away leisurely. I think this had happened 4 missions in a row when I gave up. All the while, they're screeching about how you don't understand their motives, but never tell you what they are during the mandatory post battle dialogue. Then you get to go hang out with the people who keep attempting to murder you in a family restaurant (where they also don't explain why they need to murder you and harvest brains), and muse to yourself about how deep down, they are good people.

Now I've overcome my moronation, that's a lot of words to describe how they don't like the enemy combo-block mechanism. It does force the game to be more start and stop, but it makes non-boss encounters more threatening too, especially since the lack of lengthy dungeoning and overworlds means theres less resource-scarcity tension.
I kind of liked figuring out the combination to shatter enemy defences for each character, made it a game of trying to figure out efficient combat flow than just chaining the most hit-efficient moves back to back. Other than that, some points are good, some points feel like they're b***hing about perfectly fine mechanics that are just different from what came before.
