    I played it for 6 hours today. The only part that felt like a slog was the first 'dungeon' where you pilot a gear. There's an extremely long fricking hallway with nothing in it and no music. And before that, on the Aveh tank that gets attacked by Bart's pirates, I would have loved a multi-target ability.
    But it's not that bad. Typical JRPG stuff. The animations for Fei and Citan's little martial arts moves are good and it's basically satisfying to beat the shit out of random encounters.
    The story is good too, like the localization, and the anime cutscenes with voice acting.

            That's how it is now so I wish you'd give more detail. What mechanics? I would think the battles go faster with three party members who continually get more abilities.

              Things like the attacks are always the same, the HP recovery seems imbalanced and the escape mechanic is inconsistent. The enemies aren't intriguing, I get no sense of achievement from levelling. The battles don't feel dynamic. I can only do a the same old combos, a the same old spells and heal.

    Come over to my house and watch me play because I am 12 hours in on a blind playthrough and I am loving it so far. Mechanics are just basic turn based stuff but combos are fun and mecha battles have fricking giant robots but the story is pretty great so far.

    I remember trying a few years ago and dropping it after 3 hours a few years ago though.

      Do you have Elly back in your party by that point? Cause I don't want to take Bart around if I don't have to, he's a b***h. For that matter the whole pirates can screw off with their desert kingdom with their stupid butler. Fei hasn't complained yet about getting roped into this crap, one minute he's trying to move Weltall away from Lahan and the next minute he's being recruited to help a royal take back his thrown to find a gemstone that will show the way to a mythical mech. Darn guy still needs to grieve and he knows of at least one mysterious stranger who's overtly manipulating him to KILL GOD in his own words by putting him into situations where he gets more powerful. The last goddamned thing he needs is a god-killing mech and this coddled twerp whose name is literally an anagram for brat is up his butt and Citan isn't goddamn helping. Stupid Butler named House on the verge of holding his mouth open and forcing him to drink tea. Someone needs to help Fei and only Elly and her pussy can do it.

        I don't want to say too much but you meet Elly again and learn she's in the same situation as you and all the pressure to save a Kingdom results in Fei feeling like you do which was amazing

          Yeah I like it so far, I don't think it's bad. Comparing it to other jrpgs? I need to beat it first of all, and all that other stuff I played on ps1 was a long time ago, but I can already tell the story is better than lots of games.
          It's a very good example of a jrpg. Theres a meme of "end the adventure by killing god", I mean in this game the villain literally says those words that you're supposed to kill god. And then the trope of the village getting destroyed at the beginning, you've got a little twist on that too where it's Fei himself who does it. I thought that was emotionally powerful, executed well, and the exchange between him and Elly as well. It does a great job getting us invested in his character.
          So in that sense it seems like a plot that's self-conscious of what it is, and that's another marker that it's a story being executed at a pretty high level for what it is. The party members are all flawed. Their personalities come through well in the dialogue. The plot has a tight scope, with big revelations foreshadowed clearly to you if you're paying attention. Like Citan, whatever's going on with him, it's not hidden at all, it's just unclear.
          I know it has always been considered at the top of the genre because of its story. The complaints I'm seeing (and feeling) are just for typical jrpg shit like too many random encounters that are too simple. That's what I mean by standards changing. Young people don't like that as much, you can see it a lot on this site in threads complaining about turn-based systems as a whole for example.

          • 2 years ago
            Anonymous

            I don't mind turn based combat, honestly. It's just got to many rough edges. Why do enemies stand back so that they can die? Why do I need sometimes 3 or 4 attempts to escape? Why is the sewer sequence even in the fricking game? Ugh. Seems like the story would have been better served as a fmv film tbqh.

      My opinion on the game has changed over the years.
      Back in 1998-2001 I raved about it.

      I still think the story is fantastic, one of the best in videogames. But even then it's uneven and not consistently great all the way. For people who don't understand what "pacing" is, Xenogears is a perfect example of a game that has a lot of seemingly careless, uneven pacing (in both gameplay and story). And it's true that I get bored as frick with the gameplay. I remember back in 1998, after having being playing mostly ATB, tactical turn-based RPGs, or realtime and RTwP, I thought the simpler "CTB" style system in Xenogears was a nice change of pace. (Especially next to FF9 which has one of the shittiest ATB implementations in the FF series). But today, I just get bored. It's fun watching the animations but in general the combat is just too tedious.

      What you're seeing is that the game is unique. There's really no other game like it and it really made an impression on a lot of fans. They've probably not played the game in years nor seen much in the way of criticism for it. At some point they stuck it on their list of best games ever and it's been there ever since.

      im for it
      i used to think the game was the best in the world, but i realized the story got carried by mitsudas music that played behind it and if you muted the game its really just evangelion esque in story

      so yea

      Nah the story is good, even if the quality isn't consistent. Great characters, great conflicts, great villains, great drama, really good (if perhaps over-rated) world-building, with a very solid development of the two main characters (Fei and Elly). Plus it's full of cool mecha shit. Plot and pacing get fricky and there's a lot of pastiche and a kitchen-sink mentality with cramming in half-baked story ideas that could have used more refinement. The story is a bit morally dubious*, but kind of gets away with it. The conclusion is pretty satisfying if you can make it to the end.

      *Fei as Id has committed multiple genocides and this is just kind of forgotten by the end

    If you don't like the game you honestly don't deserve to play /vr/ unless it's too modern for you. It was highly regarded in its time from people who don't even like jarpigs or FF and the staff went on to have a very successful company. You're missing something important personally if you can't stomach it.

      Can you imagine if people complaining about it never knew you could learn combos.

      There's almost no variety or balance. Almost every foot encounter is just grinding out physical attacks from each party member, one enemy at a time, over and over again. You don't get access to any AoE damage until halfway through the game when actually group up with Elly substantially. Combos are rarely practical unless an enemy counters deathblows and only deathblows. Rico is clearly not balanced at all, it seems like he was envisioned to be a slow, heavy-hitter but in fact he is just slow.

      Gear combat is similarly repetitive, most of the time just using a standard deathblow pattern to make efficient use of fuel. Elly's aerods can be extremely powerful with enough ether stat boosting and sometimes Bart's Wild Smile gives you an auto-win. But really, most battles just boil down to "weak attack, weak attack, deathblow, repeat," the only real question is whether you turn on the turbo booster or not.

        This sums up my feelings quite well. There’s essentially no customization either like most of the Final Fantasy games.

          This was my sentiment exactly back in 1998 when I played it originally. I actually enjoyed the combat well enough at first but after ~40 hours I was ready to just watch the story unfold.

            I mean, the foot combat is fine. I love the sprite animation and all the cool deathblows, but dungeons are maze like, and robot battles are boring. Also some of the last few bosses have been pretty shitty. I don’t wanna spoil for the people aren’t as far as me, but one involves a robot and a tether and the other you have to fight the same 4 things twice in a row. That honestly felt like it was just wasting my time.

        Nailed it, combat is some of the worst in the genre. FF1, DQ1 are more fun and dynamic.

        weak attacks do 10 damage for 1 AP, medium attacks do 20 damage for 2 AP, and strong attacks do 30 damage for 3AP.

        WWWWWW = 60 damage in 6AP.
        MMM = 60 damage in 6AP
        SS = 60 damage in 6AP

        Wow! Such awesome combos, feels just like a fighting game!

          I’m not a fan of the combat, but that’s not how it works at all. There’s a guide that explains the damage calculation on Gamefaqs well, but X attacks do 4 for the first hit to 5 times as much damage as triangle, not 3. The trade off is worse accuracy.

          Oh, boy. All this stuff was apparent to me after playing for 6 hours. Well I'm still going to continue. Having Elly's area attacks should make it go faster, so should using Citan (cause speed) and speed rings, and knowing which combos have the fastest animations.

    • 1 year ago
      Anonymous

      The thing is
      Because its a video game
      You don't need filler scenes or filler episodes. That means if you have the vision and budget, the "anime" part of the plot is going to be the high quality episodes of what would be a 26 episode anime, and the combat/gameplay fills out the rest.

      Xenoblade 2 has similar ideas. But its a fricking shitty game because you basically spend the first 4 chapters without real access to gameplay mechanics, and the story is somewhat awful until chapter 7.
      That means the game has 6/10 chapters with "good" gameplay, but its more like 4 of 10 chapters because the fricking Gacha system ruins the possibility of a good setup, and the story is only good for the last 3 chapters.
      If the combat and exploration was better, it could have started being good somewhere in chapter 2, and just have been a ramp upward as it took advantage of its world building to keep going towards the batshit insane finale.
      Instead Xenoblade 2 is closer to "70 hours of EVA" than "10-15 hours of insane story + 40-50 hours of insane gameplay".

      I still need to play Xenogears, so I can't tell where it falls.
      But my experience with Monolith Software is that they take their symbolism for deeper implementations than Gainax do.

      External sources aren't necessary to understand the story. There's a lot of detail not present in the game, but all the major conflicts are explained and resolved sufficiently.
