Should I wait for the remaster or just play the original?

assuming the retranslation isn't pozzed to hell, the remake will be the better way since the original's translation was rough

        don't
        play the original.
from the gameplay trailers, they already ruined the UI and sound effects.

Then don't play it, homosexual. There's thousands of brand new skinner-box alternatives to choose from, that will tickle your underdeveloped/oversocialized zoomer brain. And more release every day.

What the frick, this got 10 replies in 5 minutes, people actually play Suikoden?

Suikoden 2 is my favorite game ever, but I still recommend starting with 1 because it leads directly into 2 storywise. Definitely play 2 after. After this, I would say you could skip 3 (it is up to you), definitely skip 4, but 5 is a really good game as well (too easy, is my only complaint).

Play 1 now. PSX is easy as frick to emulate.
Play 2, and bring your save data over.
Play 3, and bring your save data over.
    Play 4 with tempered expectations
Play Tactics, and bring your save data over.
    Play 5.
Don't play DS or PSP games.

I can think of a few other games with a longer and more boring intro. But it doesn't excuse Suikoden V.

Suikoden I-III are an ongoing, interconnected story. With save state transfers between each game. More than any other series, you should be playing them in order.

Suikoden IV and on are prequels or side games that don't really matter. Once the original creator left, they dropped the ongoing story and save state transfering. As well as good characters and the tone that made Suikoden unique.

The truly patrician's take. All the games have their merits, 4 is arguably the worst gameplay wise but that setting and OST... *chef's kiss*

Suikoden IV is a lackluster RPG on its own. When you try to put it in with the Suikoden IP, it is sorely lacking. As the developers went out of their way to remove most of what made the previous games Suikoden.

Suikoden Tactics and V tried to remedy this and get back to the characters/tone of the previous games. But only with limited success. It takes more to be a Suikoden game than just 6 party members, runes and a war plot. But Suikoden IV didn't even get those parts right.

V is good, but it looks awful in 3D and the animations are stiff as frick

The 2 knocks I have on V are that it is way too easy and the story takes 2-3 hours to actually get going. Besides that, I do not feel like it is actually "10 hours of story, 1 hour of gameplay" and feel that it actually is very reminiscent to 1 and 2 in terms of overall quality.

The cutscene animations were creepy even when they came out. That weird kind of rotoscoping effect that a lot of low budget JRPGs have. Trials of Mana also had the same thing despite coming out 14 years later. But I can overlook these things because I know Suikoden and Trials of Mana were gimped by their parent companies. I still think Suikoden should have stayed 2D though. Reusing the Suikoden II engine would have not only saved them time and money, but made the series stand out. And made fans super happy.

The prologue of Suikoden V is easily 6-8 hours. And 10 if you're trying to run around and explore everything like a previous Suikoden game. Mostly because every time you move to a new screen there's a 20-30 second load time. It really adds up.

But even if you take the load times out of the equation, you have a very slow start where the only battles you have for hours are 1v1 Rock, Paper, Scissors battles and a couple staged story fights.

This is fair, I was only really thinking of Lordlake and the first exploration of Sol Falena, factoring in Stormfist and the events that transpire after are closer to 7-10 hours.

First read the chinese novel from 1120 Shui Hu Zhuan that suikoden is based off of. next play 20 minutes of suikoden III. Watch a youtube speedrun of suikoden IV. After that play 1 hour more of suikoden III then play Suikoden Tierkreis. Then Suikoden card stories for the GBA. Then play suikoden 1 & 2 for the psp but DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE PLAY SUIKODEN 2. Play suikoden II. Download the suikoden V fan mod that runs the game in reverse but stop when you're about to get to the beginning. then start over at the beginning of the normal Suikoden V but stop again when you get halfway though. play the Koei nes Suikoden: Tenmei no Chikai. Lastly play suikoden I again.

Still waiting for the remasters. And then have Konami completely forget the IP for another 25 years. Never doing a remake of III or the final Harmonia game like they should.
