There's no continuity between games, so it really couldn't matter less which one you start with.

Just play whatever the frick you want. Whichever game you choose you'll have some people say it's the best and others call it dogshit.

I played them for the first time recently, enjoyed 7 and 9 all the way through but dropped 8 like an hour in from boredom.

damn, for some reason i love the looks of it all in 8, i might try it first but who knows, maybe its not the best

if you start with 8 keep squalls hit points low. you can just constantly use his limit break and blast through the game

It really doesn't matter which one you start with, they all play differently and the stories aren't connected at all as you might've already guessed from FF15 and FF7R. That being said I think 8 is a steaming pile of turd but hey, maybe you'll enjoy the slow fricking combat (even for a JRPG) and asinine junction system.

damn i might not start with 8 after this thread lmao

8 is really weird but SOUL. FF10 is the best place to start imo, or ff7

VIII is my favourite FF, but they are all so different from each other there's no way of knowing which one you'll prefer, you will probably find the systems for setting up characters on VII and IX a little basic if you play FFVIII first as that's the most indepth. VII and IX are much more your classic 'get experience points to become stronger and equip your team members stuff you find/buy so they can use it' approach.
The plot of VIII is very experimental which divides fans, some love the strangness of it and others are infuriated/bored by it. VII has some 'what?' moments and IX is a much more straight forward fantasy plot.
tldr; it doesn't matter they are all very different from each other

this is a great fricking analysis, thx for this, i love me some experimental shit

      >The plot of VIII is very experimental which divides fans
I'd say the RPG system, with drawing spells raising your stats, is more experimental; the plot itself is just another version of the grand-father paradox, like FF1's.

FF8 is the most controversial FF in the history of the series so it's the worst possible starting point.

Literally play any FF between 5-9 except that. Once you are done with those, play 10.

FF8 is an amazing game, the only problem is some of the systems are not so straightforward to understand. it has the best art direction, and overall presentation. one of the best stories and soundtracks in the series to this day. just dive into it and maybe watch a tutorial or video about how to play it properly. it can be divisive but for the wrong reasons. imagine having a mega hit like FF7 and then you have to turn around and try to follow up to that game. they actually did some of the coolest and most ambitious shit with FF8 that they have ever done.

8 is the weakest of the PS1 trilogy

    Badly written characters
    Plot that goes stupid
2nd worst love story of the series
    enemies level scale
have to draw spells from your opponent to get stronger OR play a crappy card game

FF7 is the weakest one. has the worst graphics, alot of unnecessary characters, super boring plot and villain. much less cohesive writing, themes and also music. I really dont understand why its so popular except maybe nostalgia and not having anything better at the time. Its legitimately the only FF i get so bored of and can't even be bothered to finish.

        better than 8.

At least you knew you were dealing with Sephiroth early on in 7 while Ultimecia came out of the blue at disc 3 of 8

Sephiroth comes off as like a saturday morning cartoon villain. There is hardly any substance to his character, and his motivations are nonsensical. IF he is just supposed to be some insane guy thats fine, but there isnt much depth to him, and im just saying its kind of an overrated character/story. In FF8 there really isnt even a "main villian" seeing ultimecia as some kind of ass pull basically misses the entire point of the story. FF8 tells a much more nuanced story where there arent necessarily even any "good or bad" characters. even in some ways Laguna, Cid, Edea can be seen as responsible for causing alot of the bad events in the story. the point is seeing how all the characters are linked together over time and how their actions affected others in the future.

            >FF8 tells a much more nuanced story where there arent necessarily even any "good or bad" characters

            Ultimecia and Seifer say otherwise

Seifer is a great character, what are you talking about? even Ultimecia makes alot of sense when you look at the context and the whole story. Sorceresses dont even choose to become one, they just inherit the power so it ties into the whole theme of fate in the story. ultimecia basically initiated the events that caused her defeat and the whole theme of the story by trying to avoid them. its greek tragedy shit

                >even Ultimecia makes alot of sense when you look at the context and the whole story.

she was a generic "time traveling badguy who tried to defy her fate of being defeatedbut her act of defying fate is what caused her to be defeated"

8 is great because you can get a summon early on that lets you disable random encounters

    8 is a good game
If you want it to be fun and chill, dont get autistic about it
Just play through the game like a normie, dont grind or whatever
You can completely break the difficulty for yourself if you do either one of these:
    1. Grind enemies for xp (Makes the game much harder)
    2. Stop leveling with various abilities, and grind for spells to junction (makes the game much easier)
Just go thorugh. Kill enemies as you see them. Draw spells when you can. Always draw from bosses, they have unique stuff. Play cards, but dont spread around the weird regional rules.

The combination of the junctioning system, and having to collect and store individual spells meant that I just ran around ignoring magic use incase it made my stats go down. So not exactly a classic from a JRPG gameplay standpoint.
