I was amazed with the number of dumb decisions made by SEGA in the 90s

The amount of infighting between Sega of America and Sega of Japan seems almost comical.

What I don't understand (and I have no doubt it was sabotage):

Why make the 32x, when the numbers for the CD add-on just barely sustained the system in the first place?

    Was there a serious thought

    >Well CDs aren't popular but if it's a more powerful cartridge based system......

My question is why they would waste all of that money if the Sega Saturn was just as powerful, if not more so, and they would release the first sixth-generation console anyway.

Sorry, I meant “fifth generation” here because I was referring to the Sega Saturn. If they put more time and effort into that instead, it and the subsequent Dreamcast could perhaps have been more iconic, perhaps putting off Sega’s retirement from the “console wars” by a few years.

They were being humiliated by how good SNES games were looking and freaked out but they ended up focusing on the wrong things instead of the only thing that mattered, transparencies.

        >They were being humiliated by how good SNES games

I've read alot of shit on this site but holy cope. Dont lie out your ass. The snes was a shit system with shitty censored and downgraded games.
The snes was popular in America because Americans and low iq. The genesis was popular worldwide because it had better games.

Streets of rage 1 is better than anything the snes ever had.

It was actually down to an argument between sega us/jap because for some odd reason Sjap was scared of the jaguar and wanted Susa to do something about it.

They didnt tell them what OR that Japan was working on the saturn. So usa created the 32x without the knowledge sega japan were just going to drop any support for it instantly. segaUSA figured the 32x had 3 years life in it but that didnt happen because sega Japan told publishers and developers to focus on the saturn instead

saturn was too expensive and genesis had a huge install base

so extending the genesis would have made sense

but it would have made more sense to make the saturn backwards compatible

Anyone that still uses separate bricks with the tower of power instead of a triad with splitters/polarity changers is fricking up.

this is so hilarious because basically all broken sega cds on ebay just need the fuse changed, because some dumbass used them with the wrong power brick and popped the fuse. get a $5 pack of pico fuses and you can restore broken machines and sell them for much more cash. made a coupla hundred bucks on that about ten years ago.

People who own old consoles should also own a multimeter and be able to double check polarity before they plug their consoles in.
There's no excuse for people who insist on using original hardware to not even understand barrel plug polarity.

While true it's equally moronic that sega was inconsistent with their own products on this.

The center positive plugs are smaller than their center negative ones at least, to my knowledge.

mega cd and megadrive power bricks were the same size but different polarity iirc.

Yea can confirm. Cd and genesis are the same. At least model 1 cd and genesis.

                This helps

Master System, Genesis 1 and both models of Sega CD use the larger center negative plug, Genesis 2 and 32X both use the smaller center positive. You can't fry a Sega CD with a Genesis 2 power supply. What you can get them with is the north American NES brick; it has the right connector and the right voltage, but is AC instead of DC.

It's always hilarious to see a moronic child acting smug because he bought some memeshit a youtuber told him would him fit in with the cool kids. Imagine being so ignorant you don't even know that good power solutions exist. Imagine being such an insecure child you end up humiliating yourself by flaunting that ignorance in the very place you were trying so desperately to fit in.

This. Also sometimes you need to insert something like a brad nail into the barrel to get a proper reading of voltage and polarity. This PS2 slim barrel center positive and 8.81v.

      Anonymous

This the PS2 slim power adapter has appropriate voltage for a variety of consoles. Its probably possible to power even more consoles by adding a step up/down buck converters for consoles requiring other than 8.5v. My genesis switch powers a full tower of power off that single switch. I just had to be really mindful to screw all the wires in with correct polarity. The 32x for some reason has different polarity than genesis and sega cd.

The same can't be said about Atari, Bandai, NEC, Phillips, The 3DO Company, or Fujitsu which made only one or two decisions that were stupid enough to end their console careers much earlier than SEGA. But let's make a thread about the ones who still make games instead

It's genuinely hilarious. They quite literally contributed to their own downfall repeatedly.

    >SoJ is LITERALLY beating the shit out of their own employees, telling them they're embarrassments for not doing better than the American branch
    >Create completely toxic relationship with SoA
    >Both sides start bragging about their numbers
    >SoJ gloats about how big of a hit the Saturn is in Japan, doesn't realize the specifics and logistics why it initially succeeded
    >Goad SoA into preparing to sell a shitload of Saturns in the US thinking it's going to be hot shit
    >It sucks and flops
    >SoJ lies publicly about how many Saturns sell in the US, claiming over double the number because they want to give the illusion that it's more popular than it is so it hopefully catches some wind
    >SoA ramps up stockpiles even more based on this number, expecting it to blow up at some point
    >SoA realizes something stinks, does its own review of sales, and realizes SoJ lied
    >Infighting intensifies as company sinks in a sea of hubris and moronation
    It's genuinely funny.

The 32X should've been scrapped the moment they realized it would be impossible to implement backwards-compatibility with it on Saturn. The Nomad also should've been scrapped cool idea but it was just too bulky to be practical. It's a textbook example of what happens when internal hardware experiments are sent to market instead of being left on the cutting room floor like they should be. It'd be like if Nintendo just shat-out Project Atlantis in the mid-90's instead of waiting for the tech to get cheaper and more compact so they could release it as the GBA when the time was right.
