Kek, but they had the whole Skyrim base to use though, which is sufficiently varied with different enemies, weapons and environments. What could you create from Starfield? It will end like fallout, full of clothes and weapons mod and pretty much it.

          Anonymous

They designed a system where the fauna are all modular with veried behavior sets. It's one of the more overlooked aspects of explorations which to be fair isn't well-utilized. I can already think of several mods that would take advantage of that system or add onto it.

It's been half a year since I looked at it, but the gist of it is you have base creature types with physical traits that can be modified like the kind of caraprice they have. The creatures all have set of behaviors that fall into categories predator, herbivore, scavenger and that determines how they sandbox. If you've done exploration you'll know what I mean when you look at the creatures.

They put off releasing the Creation Kit til like a year after release, so the game is functionally vanilla until after the first dlc. This is the correct answer. I wouldn't be shocked if Bethesda and Microsoft never release Creation Kit 2 publicly, go all in on paid mods, and tell the modding community to get fricked in a vain attempt to make back a little of the obscene amount of money they spent on this dumpster fire. It would be in line with Bethesda's behavior of burning up what little goodwill they have left.

    >I was expecting people to start making mods and stuff like they did for skyrim but it never happened, why?
As far as I can tell, the modding tools are very limited now, and the game has such fundamental, core problems in it's design that people are mostly just sliding off it long before they finish the campaign. Despite what people think, modding does need people to be at least somewhat invested in the game, and I just don't think that many people were.

There were some very interesting mods for it quite early on. Interesting in that they revealed some aspects of the design that were not obvious at first glance. Like the fact that the orreries in the game ARE actually simulated, meaning that at some point of the development, intrastellar travel has been implemented, and was only later dropped, which I really did not expect.

Why would you put in the effort?
Consider it from perspective of the modder. Let's say you found a game you really liked, but saw a flaw on it and made an improvement.
You then might share this improvement online for clout, but when both the modding sites are consolidated under censorious political activists and the game is hot garbage to the point that it would just be easier to make a new game, why would you put in free work to make a mod?

Starfield would need a compelling setting, redone environments, combat and a new story to make it a compelling game. If you're gonna have to do everything from scratch, you might as well publish your own game and make money off it.

ME is good but a Bioware game scratches a different itch than a Bethesda game. The design is very different and much more linear.
Also, while I liked it, in terms of what people complain about (repetitive / boring planets, loading screens, copy pasted POI, shitty combat) Mass Effect is actually worse lol. The procgen planet surfaces are so fricking bad and it's just that one shitty facility pasted over and over.

Yeah but i can pinpoint why i would play a Mass Effect game again: to enjoy the ride of the story, characters and try to make new decisions and see the outcome.
Now why the frick would i replay Starfield again? There are no choices, consequences, pathetic quests. Why would you subject yourself to it again?

For me it's just being able to walk around in your own ship and visit planets. With the update I can now place furniture and decorate my ships. I remember playing No Man's Sky back in 2016 and thinking how a space game would be with Bethesda's shoot&loot shit from their fallout games.

In retrospect, Starfield is one of the more accessible and fleshed-out space game, championed by Star Citizen. accessible as in your average consumer can understand it and you don't need a high-end pc to run it, like Star Citizen does. I like NMS, but I've outgrown its small-scale and you can't walk around inside your ship. Games like Elite Dangerous and X4 are badass ngl, but they lack too much in other departments outside spaceflight, which Starfield achieves like basic gunplay and minor gameplay loops when you're on foot.

                Anonymous

The ship interiors are absolutely stunning and I love just spending time around furnishing stuff and dropping my favorite collectibles around but making your own layouts is a pain in the ass since you can't preview the interiors.
The game is just short of being great really, my main gripes are basic QoL stuff that adds up into an experience that isn't as smooth as it could be.

    2. The game is too hardware intensive (Insanely unoptomized) , people won't bother messing around modding games they can't run on high settings without a 4080TI

    3. It's not an elderscrolls or fallout game

  27. 2 weeks ago

Almost a year later and no creation kit, the game is still poorly optimized and feels bad to play, compared to Skyrim and FO4 that ran on low-mid hardware at release, that means a huge chunk of the modders don't even want to bother with it. There's also the dozens of other issues that put people away, like the shit lore, dated gameplay, copypasted dungeons, lack of vehicles, boring characters, etc., so there's not a lot of people are invested in it.

Even if they released the creation kit tomorrow, not a lot of people would make content for it, the mod community never took off like Skyrim and Fallout 4 and not a lot of people are playing now, so if you're a modder, you probably would just make your content mods in the older games since there's a bigger community in those.

I don't think there are dozens actually, I think it's mostly marketing bots

It only takes glancing at the game for 2 seconds to see how boring it is. I met some people fanatic about the game, but they seemed to be fanatic about it not because it's fun to play but because they think everyone unfairly hates the game. It's more like "I like starfield because I'm a contrarian"

in respect to all the gameplay mechanics, let alone story and writing and characters, it's a downgrade from the already terrible skyrim, which is again a downgrade from the already terrible oblivion, which is again a downgrade from the barely tolerable morrowind (and christ, lets not forget the garbage fallout games). Morrowind at least is more of a sidegrade to daggerfall, but holy shit this studio has genuinely never made an actual good game. They are at their absolute best cases, extremely rough with need for modders to actually make the game fun and playable.

in the worst case, which is basically starfield, I cannot fathom how anyone in their right fricking mind can play it

there's really only 1 thing bethesda is good at, and that's shilling the frick out of their games

I've seen this exact same kind of opinion since morrowind and I find it odd that rpgcodex tourists never came to the conclusion that maybe people just like their brand of game that isn't just cRPGs.
Also comparing Morrowind and Daggerfall is bizarre to say the least no matter what direction you take it from since they're so fundamentally different.

I hate it when people use that histrionic word where it doesn't make sense. I have successfully played a number of bad games. Unless that shit hits you with a CTD every time you start it, then it is in fact playable.

Same, people joke about Skyrim being unplayable without mods because they're addicted to content. I played my first character with literally zero mods and had a lot of fun, and to this day I only use a few mods for very specific content. Also, some people just get addicted to modding in itself and don't even play, so their opinion shouldn't even count.

Maybe in sales or player counts at release, but nobody is invested in the story and lore, and the gameplay is insanely repetitive, and to make people stick to a singleplayer game, you need variety in the gameplay and a interesting setting to people feel immersive in.

I like the game, I even paid for it, I got a good 150 hours of the base game but eventually seeing the same shit over and over again got tedious, I can put aside stuff like no seamless travel because I like the gameplay, but it doesn't have variety, there's like 20 guns and you're stuck with a certain category of 3 or 4 guns according to the perk you get, so you will be shooting the same enemies in the same locations with the same weapons for dozens of hours.

I think the game has potential to be much better, the DLC can add a actual good story and a interesting faction to the setting and the mods will overhaul or add the content, but it's clear Bethesda is being incredibly incompetent and lazy with how long things are taking, maybe it takes so much time by the time they're out nobody cares about it anymore, which I think it's the case already.

I'm sure I'll end up playing it at some point, but I don't care enough now to try and pirate it. Maybe I'll get it for free on Epic or wait until GOTY edition is on sale for $9.99. Not the business model I would want for my company, but I'm sure Bethesda knows what they're doing.

Starfield is the most boring shit ever thats why. they made a HUGE mistake with their "Nasapunk" aesthetic. THey should have gone science fantasy and have aliens and weird planets. but no. what a mess.

Just no passion for it, either from Bethesda or the modders, unfortunately. Personally I blame Microsoft, but I blame them for a lot of things. I gave Starfield a fair shake, 20-30 hours or so, and it just never really did it for me. It was never bad, but it was never very good, either. It was the least buggy launch Bethesda game I've ever played though, so that's something.

The official modding tools aren't even released yet, moron. I don't even acknowledge all current mods until then, other than the one or two useful tweaks and maybe the StarUI mod. Everything else is virtually all model swapping. Taking an item and swapping it with another. This was the same case in FO4. limited mods and some were soo fricking janky trying to install them, then the tools came out and it became more simplified.

Once the tools come out, you'll see more shit. Then people can start getting on the same page with the important tools like the script extenders. You'll see some actual interesting mods like real Bounty Hunter missions/targets, if they don't already advertise it when their next talk of plans happens.

Sure, that and they need to improve the POIs. I'm fine with the same-ish buildings, since prefabs fit in with the early space-settlers themes. However, it's what's inside them that needs improvement --or more so variety.

If they can have the tools in place to let dedicated modders make up variations of POIs, it would be appreciated.
For example, Bethesda allows us to "upload" our designed outposts in the game. It'll take that snapshot of the outpost, and implements it in other player worlds. simple variations like random parts being destroyed, or has spacers in there scavenging.

The story itself just needs more fricking story, tbqh. I really do think they're going to take the story and add onto it with the expansions. You get new starmaps to explore, and people in the game-world stop shitting on Constellation because they as a faction are actually exploring outside the Settled Systems for once.

          Anonymous

POIs are gonna be so easy to fix with the creation kit. Literally just copy paste dungeons from all the other bethesda games and reskin them. Once you're done you can play hundreds of hours and never see the same POI again.

FO4 still feels like jankfest amateur hour compared to Skyrim's modding community. It might be because it's newer but the games are just 4 years apart. Or because the post-apoc setting attracts the slavic crowds more that those guys love their jank.

Skyrim is a fantasy game, that means it is a better game than a shooter game. That is why F4 has shittier mods, because fantasy is the ultimate video game type and nothing can compare in any shape. F4 is "fun" for maybe 30 hours of modded gameplay, guns just suck and cannot be interesting no matter what you do with them because they can only shoot.
