On one hand good gameplay is great, for a game. But it means you reach the point of satisfaction quicker and stop logging on.
By easing away gameplay and essentially making it a few logon clicks then it keeps you logging in because it’s a casual offhand habit you build up.
In games like Genshin which requires active gameplay for example, it’s easy to burn out and stop playing. In games like FGO the daily missions are a few afk clicks that give you the same dopamine so you have to really try in order to burn out on the dailies and stop logging in.
It helps to think about gacha games like dessert. While a cake or other baked good is more delicious than Oreos, the work required to bake a cake is a far bigger barrier to the sweets than just eating from the pack of Oreos on the counter. While we might like the cake more, because it’s so time consuming we’re less likely to eat it. While the Oreos are always within reach meaning they’re the food of choice.
why? just make a game with a more indepth progression system. ARPGs have been doing this fine for decades without needing to resort to energy systems, idk why the same kind of design can't be applied to gachashit
