In a lot of classic shooters guns either had alternative fire mode like in unreal or there was some sort of combo to the weapon like in painkiller.
As example in painkiller there's stakethrower with underbarrel grenade launcher, but you can fire a grenade in the air(secondary fire mode) and then shoot that grenade while it was in the air(primary fire mode) to create a makeshift rocket or a weapon combo/mechanic.
Or in unreal the shock rifle had primary hitscan mode and a projectile mode in secondary but if you hit the secondary fire energy blob it would create shock combo dealing big damage.
I can't really think of any console shooter that would have a gun or combo like that.

The BFG is way more cell-efficient than the plasma gun. The plasma is only better if you're only fighting single targets or can't get up close. And it's only more efficient on single targets up to the Baron.
