Icewind Dale II - worth it?

I bought it back in 2002 but dropped it immediately
because you can't roll and give your character many
18 stats.
Should I give it another try? What would be a good grp?
Can I dumb CHA or WIS on some classes?

Icewind Dale II is kinda fricked up balance-wise. The best thing you can do to overpower enemies is do a 1~2 party team and let them gather up all the XP so they're over-levelled and rape everything with and without a pulse. And when you finally need the other characters, you add characters as you go along, and they'll be automatically levelled to your existing team's level.

      And that really works?

Yes, the magic number is 4. Having such a party means you can tackle the infamous Shaengarne Bridge battle with a mage that has fireball instead of one at a lower level. At the point a 6 person party reaches level 9, your 4 person party will be level 12.

So start with 2 and add 2 later? Or start with 4?

A party of two gains double the XP of a party of four. So if you can manage, you can do that. However, keep the following paragraph in mind.

Unlike older Infinity Engine games where each monster gives a flat xp reward, the way XP works with enemies in ID2 is based on your party's average level and the monster's danger level. So you want to manage optimal XP gain by level squatting and using a mule character to lower your average party level. Otherwise, you'll reach a point where a monster is a non-threat and doesn't give XP. If you have a 4 person party at level 12, adding a mule changes their average level of 12 to 9. Since levelling up gives you ALL the levels, you need to time when you level up. There's certain points in the game where it's a lull with trash mobs, and if you can enter those zones with a low average party level, then those trash mobs will still give XP. There's guides on the optimal way you do this, but if you're not playing the most difficult mode Heart of Fury, you can just play with 2~4 characters and level up whenever.

Yeah, pretty much this. I solo'd IWD2 with a sorc freely using instakill and summoning spells because there are no members to friendly fire

I liked it a lot. its a lot of fighting though. like 90% of the game is just huge battles. yes you can and should min max stats and meta game a little bit to make the game more enjoyable. if you want I can give you a detailed party or just some tips on what to look for.

      >if you want I can give you a detailed party or just some tips on what to look for.
Gimme some hints for a good party. I thought something like:
      >Dwarf Fighter
      >Paladin
      >Thief (backstabbing)
      >Mage
      >Cleric
      >Bard

alright here is what you want for a less frustrating party.
        in general you want
        1 tank
        1 arcane user
        1 healer
you can mix and match classes on one character. you could have every single class that your stats allow on one guy.
you can manipulate the difficulty of the game by lowering the level of your party in comparison to the are you fight in. its a good idea to not always level up all your characters. non casters are especially good for that purpose because the difference between a level 5 fighter and a level 10 fighter is not big, while the same is not true for a wizard.
some races are a lot better than others. deep gnomes for example make the best tanks. its not super important for a casual playthrough but worth looking into.
Sorcerer are better than mages because the game can be very stingy with good scrolls.
your party looks perfectly fine though thiefes are very weak in this game and mostly used for meta gaming with single levels
you could easily start as a rogue and put all the other levels in wizard and be a much more useful party member
fighters are better than paladins and if you want two melee guys I suggest either another fighter or making a 2nd cleric and giving him some barbarian / fighter levels
clerics and druids in general are very good in this game

          cont.
since all the hardest battles in the game are huge groups of enemies without resting its best to pick spells accordingly. aoe, aoe crowd control, long lasting buffs etc. are all way better than strong but single target dmg
same with class feats. some are really useful to pick
if you want I can give you some race, addtional classes and feat and spell selection for your party, but you should be fine

I know paladins aren't amazing, but isn't the best weapon in the game a paladin exclusive? I think it's perfectly fine to take one.

1h weapons are shit in 3.5e and a 1lvl dip is enough to use it anyway

it's a very good weapon, but not worth it making a paladin imo. paladins are best for some extra levels in a sorcerer or any class to get the stat reward from the actual quest. thats very powergamy though. nothing wrong with playing a paladin for the roleplay. there are quite a few paladin only dialogue options in the game too if you make him your party leader
fighters are just good from lv 1 to the end game though. just a great solid tank to carry the party

It was notable at the time since it was 3rd ed. rather than 2nd ed. combat. But that's less remarkable now given all the other isometric rpgs and Pathfinder stuff in particular. Story-wise you aren't missing much. It's fine to play if your out of other crpgs. But I wouldn't force it.

    >because you can't roll and give your character many 18 stats.

it doesn't matter most classes have a few stats they care about, ther est you can completely dump so you can easily reach 18 in everything relevant to that class

    >Can I dumb CHA or WIS on some classes?

Wis give you better will saves so I wouldn't go under 8 unless you've got a plan for dealing with spells affetcing will

    >What would be a good grp?

just google it, there's a shitton of guide on how to build strong parties and 3.0 multiclassing ruleset is too autistic to give guideline on Ganker thread

Having at least 1 pure cleric and 1 pure sorcerer with at least a couple of melee tanky classes like a paladin/barbarian is fine for your first playthrough no need to min/max the game is piss easy unless you play Heart of the Fury

      is 3e worse than 2e?

Depends on who you ask. 3rd edition saved RPGs, but is also part of the decline of RPGs. Game sessions changed from being all about the dungeons you explored to your beautiful, unique bufferfly character builds and all the stuff they have and get each level without being beholden to sticking to a single class. If you like character creation, 3rd edition is right up your ally. If you liked your character being a mook you roleplay as in the DMs campaign world, 2nd edition is better.

There is no reason to not roleplay and focus on dungeons in 3ed. That is just a personal option.

Absolutely not 3e gives the player incredible customization options
2e is very linear and every class has very few customization

Also the stats are absolutely nonsensical

This might be a good place to ask.
Is the schizophrenic exp progression for the levels of druid in baldurs gate the same in the table top? And if so, any reason why?
