I like the Windows maids. I used to not like Windows at all and complain if a computer has Windows, but then people showed me the maids and now I like it. I don't use the computer for games, just for making programs so I have never cared about installing games or running Direct X or whatever. It is easy to make Java and C programs in Windows, but I haven't found a solution to play with Scheme yet. I have been using SBCL instead but I really want to try Scheme because a lot of nice books got written in/about it. I could probably get it if I used WSL, but I don't want to use WSL.

Linux is only a time sink if you have a very low IQ and a lot of problems with reading comprehension.

I use Windows but only have one game installed (a WoW private server) which would work fine under X/Ubuntu.
For laptops and desktops it just works, sorry. My homeserver runs Ubuntu of course.

        >laptops and desktops
Why do you care about immobile legacy form factors? Laptops shouldn't even be produced anymore, and that form factor is dangerous to your back, neck and other joints.

It shouldn't be viewed as normal to be expected to waste thousands of dollars on """""ergonomic""""" cope office equipment when you could just pick a better form factor to begin with.

If you're talking simply productivity stuff, I use a Macbook for work. I don't like the way it does window management but for literally every other element of the user experience I prefer it over Windows.
Also the ads in Windows have gotten comical. It's like opening up a porn site when you use it now.

At least 4 pieces of software I need for work only exist for Windows. So I NEED Windows for both work and play. I have used MacOS a little, it's ok. I've used Linux a little, it's ok too. But it's gotta be Windows for me.

This is a GNOME problem, not a Linux problem. GNOME developers are notoriously stubborn and dismissive.

            Anonymous

Right, that's another thing with Linux. GNOME devs have attitude problems, and everyone else has incompetence problems. Anything not named GNOME is impossibly buggy and unstable.

KDE qt stack always had kind of blurry fonts, I can literally see rainbow around my glyphs right now on my screen, and GNOME used to be much better in that regard and now is way worse in everything.

And just a reminder, if you don't use GNOME you still use either GTK or Qt, so all those issues still apply to you. You can't just shrug it off to "linux is just le kernel".

              >You can't just shrug it off to "linux is just le kernel".
To be clear, that's not what I'm doing. The post I was replying to was complaining about "Linux DE devs" fricking up font rendering and telling users to frick off. That is a GNOME/GTK specific issue. KDE/Qt's font rendering may not be up to your standards either, but at least this is an issue you can broach with KDE developers, and they'll listen to your feedback instead of being arrogant wienersuckers and treating you like shit on the bottom of a shoe.

Is that your desktop? If so, how did you change the entire colorscheme like that?

Also, you could report that to the KDE developers and it would get fixed. If you reported that to GNOME developers, they would just remove the feature outright and call you a moron.

No, I don't personally see a reason to use Windows at all. All the software I need for work is available on Linux, and generally speaking, I prefer open-source applications wherever possible. Sure, maybe they aren't always up to the same standards as some professional, proprietary software suite or whatever, but I think that issue is massively overblown, and for personal use, most open source software is more than sufficient (and isn't plagued with telemetry, ads, bullshit business models, and other user-disrespecting bullshit) or is even the superior option within its domain. I could run a lot of this software on Windows too, but I really like how my desktop works and the features it has, so Windows as an environment would just feel like an immense downgrade.

In any case, I don't see a reason to use Windows for gaming either, everything I want to play works on Linux pretty seamlessly. If I ever ran across a game I couldn't run, or I really needed some specific program in Windows, I would just run it in a VM with gpu passthrough or something.

I can't call myself a competent IT person if I have to force everyone to stop using Windows if they want help from me.

As for career paths, there isn't a single technology job where you don't have to interact with Windows machines. If I stop using Windows, I'll unlearn useful admin tools and powershell commands quickly, making me less useful in that field and replaceable.

Linux and BSD are a lot better to me, but I think Windows can and should co-exist rather than being outrationalized and completely replaced. Think of it as Yin and Yang between corporate closed-source software and FSF-approved FOSS. Getting rid of either extreme sides isn't possible (at least not permanently), as the new Yin or Yang would introduce itself as a more extreme opposite.

At work, there is still sadly some Windows-exclusive software I need to use that won't work right on Wine no matter how hard I try. I wish I could switch, but at the moment I just can't.

On my personal machines, I switched to GNU/Linux exclusively many years ago and never looked back. Even when it comes to games, every single game I care about works GNU/Linux anyway.

Linux is just a timesink and you get nothing in return for it, no one even pays for Windows anyway and almost everything can be pirated.
Why would any sane human being want to subject themselves to Linux? I've never understood it, nothing works out of the box, you have to beg any competent developer for a linux port/version or almost everything and there are 1000000 different distros that each solve nothing in particular
