Lillipup definitely wouldn't have looked like that in Gen 1. That Elektross looks cool though.

There isn't a 1000 to avoid, so no reason to do regional variants anymore.

    Elektross is a huge improvement.

You are aware that the problem is not the region of the pokemon, but the current artistic direction, just take Vulpix as an example, an original Kantomon that has been redesigned to resemble its Alola counterpart.

        Why did they do this?

Will always be the better Vulpix

I dislike how they made the arctic fox version slimmer than the fire version. It's supposed to be adapted to cold environments. Make it fluffy and have smaller ears. They really just designed it to appeal to pokefrickers.

This, in the end you will only get regional Kanto forms but with the current design philosophy

Gen 4 started it. Originally Vulpix was very well proportioned, then gen 4 made it have a water head

        Anonymous

I agree that the Gen 4+ version is cuter but I feel bad that it has to come to that

      Anonymous

I really don't understand why they feel the need to change designs or make new ones to make it cuter or more marketable as a plushie. I'm pretty sure I had a vulpix plushie years ago that had a bigger head and flat face regardless. It's still recognizably vulpix, and I don't think anyone would bat an eye that their plush toy isn't perfectly on-model and is instead deformed in some spots to look cuter.

It also just ends up as strange when new designs and old designs clash and look out of place alongside eachother. It's nice when pokemon are allowed to look off model in order to make them more detailed or cuter depending on the medium. Plushies can be cute regardless of the designs, and TCG art could add a bunch of extra texture and shading to make the stationary images look more vibrant.
Instead it feels like there's a compulsion to streamline things and smooth out edges as much as possible so that everything lines up to the official art as much as physically possible.

Froakie's redesign is stupid, why would it look like Bulbasaur and not Poliwhirl?

      Anonymous

Because they bought too heavily in the "le bulbasaur is a heckin frog" meme.

        Anonymous

I know Bulbasaur is frog, my question is why would Froakie look like ONLY Bulbasaur.
The artist is implying Bulbasaur is what any Gen 1 frog would look like when there's already another Gen 1 frog that looks nothing like it.

          Anonymous

I know, and what I'm saying is that the artist bought into the "Bulbasaur is a frog" idea, when that's only partially true.

Bulbasaur is a vague hybrid creature, using traits from frogs, yes, but also mammals, pop culture depictions of dinosaurs, and even (perhaps unintentionally) extinct para-reptiles. That line is more "monster" than much else, but a lot of people assume that it is exclusively a frog, and the artist here is likely one of them.

Ants undergo a complete metamorphosis (egg - larva - pupa- adult).
Termites undergo an incomplete metamorphosis (egg - multiple nymph stages visually getting closer in appearance to adults - adult).
Zorotypus (angel insect) also undergoes an incomplete metamorphosis, but the nymphs look exactly like adults, only smaller.

Some rare frog species skip the tadpole stage, yes.
A new species of tiny frog that has no tadpole stage was discovered in Mexico just last year.
