          >the game will only ever give you "go over there and bring me 10 boar arses" quests
not your main point but responding to your fetch quest example. they said this:
          >This is accomplished by utilizing quest templates in a 5 act structure, letting the VGM piece together new quests and opening up many new possibilities.
so I don't think simple fetch quests like that are gonna be in the game

            >so I don't think simple fetch quests like that are gonna be in the game
The way I've heard Peterson explain it is that it's like those procedural quests in Daggerfall, that sometimes had plot twists and choices, but the way they are generated has more depth and permutations. So, instead of a Skyrim "radiant quest" which has like 5 variants that just have a random location and target, and absolutely zero guidance, there could be 3000 variants, with procedurally generated guidance based on the locations, targets, goals and individuals involved. It sounds like a natural evolution of Daggerfall's system, and the basic mechanism does not even sound hard to program. The tricky thing is to tie it into all the background simulation that they have running, so quests are made relevant.

explain to me how it was good in daggerfall

play it yourself. if you don't like large cities, maze-like dungeons, and a true sense of scale then nothing I say would convince you otherwise

So what's their pitch? how to they want to expand/refine the daggerfall formula?

people find the "Virtual Dungeon Master" most appealing
      >Perhaps the most exciting feature we are working on, the Virtual Game Master—or VGM—is a system designed to bring roleplaying to the next level. Brought to life using the latest in machine learning technology, the VGM is meant to tailor a player’s gameplay experience to their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their preferences and choices.
      >Aside from the many hand crafted quests we plan to offer, the VGM is also in charge of creating new quests for the player to encounter. This is accomplished by utilizing quest templates in a 5 act structure, letting the VGM piece together new quests and opening up many new possibilities. The VGM will also take into account other quests the player has already completed, their playstyle, who their allies and enemies are, and what type of quests the player prefers, then utilize these variables to create new, tantalizing, and engaging content.

I also think this is cool
      >The world itself is ever changing; cities can grow, deteriorate, or be entirely destroyed by war, and the sky, landscape, and flora change with the seasons.

        some more stuff about NPCs

        >During a player’s travels throughout the Archipelago, they will meet many interesting people with whom to forge lasting friendships or, perhaps, something deeper. Each NPC the player interacts with will be saved by the VGM, who can use them later down the line to push new quests and storylines towards the player character. This means that any NPC has the potential to become an important character.

        >To make sure the sprawling cities of the Archipelago feel occupied and alive, The Wayward Realms uses a Mass-AI system to display thousands of npcs on screen at any given moment. To accomplish this, the crowd is treated as a single entity. However, as the player approaches an individual NPC, they are outfitted with a background, occupation, and routine, meaning players may follow them around and see their daily life play out.

          Anonymous

biggest gameplay addition seems to be boats
          >With the setting being an archipelago, ships and boats play a huge role in the game. Ships may be hired by players to travel from island to island or purchased outright to sail freely across the sea.
Vessels come in various shapes and sizes, offering players a way to travel and even a place to call home, depending on the type of ship. Unlawful players may also steal a ship for themselves, though that will of course come with consequences.

last stretch goal shows they'd like to add in co-op too
          >Multiplayer support allowing friends to join the player in a drop-in/drop-out co-op fashion.

            Anonymous

last significant thing is their approach to the main quest
            >For this reason, we have chosen to forego a traditional “Main Quest'' in order to craft many smaller and more varied narratives for our factions, which will appeal to a broad swath of character types. The player can further shape their story by how they choose to deal with major World Events. They can take part and influence the outcome, or simply stand by and live with whatever consequences these events bring to the world.

          Anonymous

Ideally I'd want all NPCs to exist from the start like in the other DF (Dwarf Fortress), but I can see how that would be infeasible. Except for that, this sounds amazing.

        Anonymous

VGM sounds like a mixed bag. It entirely makes sense to base quests on the player character's history and relationships, and to some extent abilities as well (because quest givers would give you a quest if they thought you were suited to it), but trying to adjust to the player's preferences and playstyle would break immersion and probably also lead to receiving the same kinds of quests over and over, making it more difficult to break the monotony when you want to change to a different kind of quest.

I doubt it's all or nothing like that. I figure if you do a lot of stealth it'll end up making up like 50 percent of the content you encounter and the other stuff will be off-ramps you can explore. and you could always just do faction quests to get away from whatever path it's sending you down

          Anonymous

But wouldn't you be able to mix up the quests by playing to your preference?

If they can prove that they are capable of making a new one, then that's good enough for me. If they fail to prove that, then tough luck.
They've described a game that's built around a multitude of interconnected systems. They've claimed that all design is complete and now it's up to implementing it. If they can prove that those systems are in place in the demo island, then they've proven that they can be in place in the entire archipelago.

    >Ted Peterson is a former designer and writer for Bethesda Softworks. He is seen as one of the main creators of The Elder Scrolls, alongside Julian LeFay and Vijay Lakshman. He was a designer for both The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, as well as a writer for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Additionally, he was a quest designer for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and wrote the contents of the Pocket Guide to the Empire, Third Edition, the chapter titles being written by Michael Kirkbride. He is also the namesake for Sheogorath, "Sheogorath" being a corruption of Peterson's first name, Theodore.

    >Born Benni Jensen October 30, 1965 in Denmark, LeFay joined Bethesda Softworks shortly after the company's creation in 1987, as one of the original four employees. He held the role of Chief Engineer there for many years, and together with Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman, he eventually pitched the idea of expanding their homebrew Dungeons & Dragons setting, Tamriel, into a proper fantasy setting for the company to develop original games for. LeFay would eventually coin the name "The Elder Scrolls" as a name for the setting during the development of the first game, 'The Elder Scrolls: Arena'. LeFay eventually quit Bethesda Softworks in 1998, citing concerns over the extensive changes in the company's corporate culture. At the request of Christopher Weaver, then-Executive Producer of The Elder Scrolls series and personal friend of LeFay, he worked briefly on The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind as consultant.

I'm not going to engage in cope. Janky production values are expected. You might automatically get near-photorealistic nature in UE5, but animations will have to be made by someone, and when you have a lot of them, you're going to see shitty animations. >I don't understand how 750k will make the scale their talking about
Notch made a procedural game for free and the world it generates is the size of Neptune. The production expenses of procedurally generated worlds does not scale with the size of those worlds. Only with the granularity of those procedures. Are you going to have algorithms for terrain and vegetation? Or are you going to have algorithms for terrain, vegetation, biomes, erosion, light and water access based undergrowth, animal trails, trade and travel based projected human paths, etc. Basically, in any one area of the whole world, how far can you zoom in before you run out of precision. That's what matters in how much it's going to cost to create a massive world.

I imagine it's much easier to make some portraits/statues and npcs than to build the procedural system they are building. the game needs to be populated anyways so making them obligated to create all those characters and items is good

I hope it doesn't backfire on them and I hope at least some of the things they add to placate backers are cool. I mean, if I had so much money that it was no object, I'd probably do the same thing just so I can get an RPG with the type of companions I've been wanting.

It was a big thing for anyone following this game. Basically until a playable game is in everyone's hands this should be viewed as a scam. To give some context: this game was announced like 5+? years ago. We are just now getting a kickstarter. Not to fund the game, mind you, but to fund a demo that can be used as a sales pitch to actually fund the game.

I'm the guy who originally posted it to /vrpg/. I'm a Daggerfall fan and as soon as that article released, I made sure to archive it. It's a long read, but it's kek. As long as they don't go too deep in it, I think it's fine, especially if it's only locations or factions. Get a fine structure out now so you don't have to deal with plot holes or retcon shit down the line. Reminds me of League where all the lore in the beginning was literally just middle-school made up lore like "Hailing from the slums of Zanzimania...he had to do all what was needed to survive. Taken in by the Wings of Alfart, Heimdall rose among the ranks and..." types of snippets that had to be retconned because they wanted something more serious.

Honestly, after playing Elden Ring's co-op mode, I wish a lot of adventure RPG single-player games had coop. Bonus if it's seamless drop-in as well. They don't even need to balance it or develop the game around it. In fact, it would be better if they didn't. Make it an afterthought and just buff enemy hp based on player count and maybe make enemies a little bit more aggressive + bigger enemy spawns + shared exp. It's so easy.

This team seems like a bunch of idea guys that want to create a grand game but don't actually have the skills or desire to put in the work for it. Just from what I read in that article that gets posted around anyway.

This is a Kickstarter to fund a demo by the way, a demo they intend to shop around to publishers and we all know what that means.

      Anonymous

There's no reason to think Julian LeFay doesn't have the skills, since he already did Daggerfall and has been working as a programmer (though not game dev) ever since. I did think he didn't care enough to put in the work, back when that article came out. But now we have proof that he has put work into the game since then. I have no idea what prompted them to start getting serious.
