It includes digital painting and sculpting as well. For videogame art, of course.

Painting appeals to me way more but I would be way better at sculpting (I have tried both) so I guess sculpting

You'd have to start with drawing for both, it's surprising how much of your 2D skill transitions directly into sculpting

For the purposes of making a video game I would say 2D art has far more applicability than 3D.

AI can make 2D but it can't make 3D yet. If you're making career decisions for vidya than 3D is more viable, although both are bad ideas at this point. In the time it'll take you to learn either, they'll both be replaced

You realize artists can and will use AI, and they will immediately be far better at it than no-skill pajeets? good luck helplessly sweating over your keyboard, wrestling with AI to make it do what you want, until at some point it gets "almost" there, and you cope by saying that that's "good enough". Meanwhile I can just paint over any generated image to fix any mistake, adjust anything I want and get it right instantly.

People don't understand how powerful a good 2D artist is. Concept art literally what sells a game to higher up who never touched a video game in their whole life. If they think the idea is simply neat then it is greenlit. Simply telling them is boring but having amazing images to show can sell the game by itself sometimes. Honestly believe the Made In Abyss game only got made because it was an anime and likely have god tier concept art just all over the place.

      2D games are inferior though.

Not true, I tried to bust into the concept art industry with a lot of my peers but a ton of them had to switch to 3D because tehre's about 15 times the amount of job openings for 3D positions than concept ones. You only need 2-3 concept artists on an entire project and but dozens upon dozens of 3D guys. Don't learn just 2D if you want a game industry job kiddos. I ended up going into fine art and coping after seeing the despair

i already do painting, so that. if anything it would hone my skill a lot more than just using it for gifts/shitposts. despite being artistic (and autistic) my hands shake a little bit like i have mild parkinsons so sculpting is probably out of the question for me.

Neither. I already do plenty of sewing and make my own custom clothes, and I feel immeasurably more comfortable cutting fabric and using my sewing machine to put it back together than using a paintbrush.

      This is something i did
I sculpt and paint for myself. It's really relaxing and motivates me to go on. I always loved to draw and made my UEngine maps for UT99/2004, so going into Blender was exciting for me. Got me two 3D printers and learned how to paint minis. Now i'm trying to learn core set rules to also play TT but need people for that and that sucks.

Painting is obsolete because an AI can produce anything you want

But we actually have a limited vocabulary for describing shape, so if you wanted to make something specific, sculpting is still useful

      >because an AI can produce anything you want
Then why are all the AI art threads full of Anons rolling the dice over and over and over again trying to get their prompts to look the same as the image in their head?

If you learned to paint you could just paint it instead of arguing with a computer.

        >Then why are all the AI art threads full of Anons rolling the dice over and over and over again trying to get their prompts to look the same as the image in their head?

Because the model doesn't use artist tags or they don't know any artists. In the worst case scenario you can train a lora on exactly what you want. You're not going to invent a new painting style.

Bruh, we're not even done with all the styles that have already been invented. Quit being such a greedy novelty-addicted homosexual.

i already know how to paint, i probably should learn sculpture to prepare for the inevitable rise of 3d printing when the ruling class gives the last fragments of industry away and we can no longer get basic replacement parts for anything.
