If you think about it, the US HECU marines losing the battle of Black Mesa basically ensures the total defeat of humanity by the combine. The marines don’t realize it but they’re fighting to keep earth from being enslaved by the Nihilanth and then the Combine.

HECU had no chance of winning anyway, they barely even slowed things down.

If Gordon wasn't such a dumb nagger and pushed the cart properly, the world wouldn't be in that mess in the first place.

      Anonymous

I mean was it ever his fault to begin with?
His job is literally to push the cart while other scientist test their teleport capability over the line. The only thing Gordon can do at to prevent it was to not push at the cost of his life and even then would that stop another person to do the same thing as Gordon did in the game?

Then Breen would've assigned some random ass scientist to push it.

Nah. Earth's fate was sealed the moment gman gave Black Mesa the fucked up xen crystal and convinced them to shoot it with a laser powered beyond their established safety perimeters

Fuck off. Gordon Freeman is the George Floyd of the inter dimensional civilizations:

        >”I was jus done pushin dat crisshul, I dindu Nuffin. Naw we gotta kill dem white folks up in the citadel cuh Dey not sharing da Resauwces for dose science programs. Eli Vance was a good boy he was goin to church and turnin he life around.”

The place got nuked but by then it was too late. The Xen invasion was there for far too long and other parties have noticed the incident, decided to interfere moments after the incident.

I was under the impression that the resonance cascade is what allowed the Combine to find Earth. Destroying Black Mesa probably wouldn't have been enough to prevent that, and I doubt it was at all operational after the event anyways.

Half life 2 sucks because you have no idea wtf is going on. The games themselves give you hardly any explanation for anything and not in a dark souls way either.

Nowhere in the games does it say the Nihilanth is a fleeing refugee - only comments by the writers.

It's hard to hear but he actually talks to you during the last parts of the game. He tells you he and the other aleins are enslaved, and makes a few references to them being close to extinction.

He's got a giant slave collar on, and during the approach to the fight he's telepathically warning you about some power greater than himself. "You are a man, he is not a man", is explicitly warning Gordon about G-Man.

Earth was screwed from the get go basically. The guys at black Mesa were probably the only ones who could have done anything to stop the combine piggy backing into our universe and the ones who weren't outright killed by the military/ayyys went up with the base.

Hadn't thought about that but yeah. There must have been a good chunk of the world's top experts on parallel dimensions, high-tech weaponry, teleportation and xenobiology among the victims. No wonder Earth couldn't get it's shit together in time.

Absolutely correct, the only people of any worth in the resistance were the handful of survivors like Eli, Kleiner and Magnusson. Imagine what they could've done with a dozen more scientists.

Playing Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 back to back is jarring.

    >Half Life 1
    >irreverent black comedy aspect to everything in the game
    >implied Gordon is a sociopath who kills even other scientists for no other reason than they’re in his way

    >Half Life 2
    >Les Miserabe/Warsaw Uprising sci fi story with the black humor completely stripped out

The aspect of Half life 2 that has aged the least well is Alyx Vance. She falls in love with Gordon for pretty much no reason since he can’t talk at all. It’s insanely cringe and embarrassing in 2023. Just different standards of the time. Half life 1 actually aged better because it’s kind of goofy, sadistic, cruel, and not all that serious. Like so much of Half Life 1 is meant to be read as funny.

The world was fucked as soon as the resonance cascade opened. Even if they wiped out everything in Black Mesa as they had planned, the portal storms would have still come and would have still filled Earth with Zen wildlife. Even if the Combine didn't show up, Earth would become a vastly depopulated very dangerous wilderness with fortified towns.

Dario Casali, one of the dev of HL did a commentary on the game recently, giving snippet on what happened during development.
    >Based Kelly Bailey, John Guthrie designed the resonance cascade sequence overnight by themselves

He repeats the same sections many times because he mainly relies on autosaves, has no idea what he's doing, and playing on the difficulty that's tough for veterans
It does get pretty bad even in Unforeseen Consequences. I worry for the later bits.

Maybe he likes pain, like I do. I play every HL mod on Hard. Sometimes they're really not balanced for that difficulty, which makes them impossible to complete.
I don't know what is worse on Hard HL, the crack vorts "blink and you die", the bullet sponge HECU that kill you faster than you can kill them, the invisible black ops.
