It's a multimedia project. You have to read a japanese only novel and to have followed the dev cycle and lore drops from the beginning of the game's development to underatand it. And yes, this is why final fantasy sucks now.

they tried to do a really aggressive in media res thing and only somewhat pulled it off, there's an ingame codex for a reason. it's all pretty straightforward they just don't have all the traditional expository dialogue where characters explain things they'd already know to each other for the sake of the audience.

This is my personal definition of "Gets good after forty hours" game. I started hating my captors but by the end couldn't wait to see the next story beat. It helps I liked the battles/music/visuals.

Read the datalog, but it doesn't matter much. All you need to know is that you are a peon in some gods' conflict.

Wrong, it was better while it was a linear game. Pulse's side quests are shit too. Game becomes good again after the Gran Pulse in the final dungeon though.

Same. I went into ff13 thinking I would hate it but it really grew on me and I think highly of it. The battle system was really fun and so was the music. It's the kind of game that logic tells me I should hate but I really like it a lot

They really bump a lot of information in the beggining
    The importante things are:
Coccon is a moon like aritificial planet that floats over Pulse (the real planet)
They gone to war in times past and severed communication until the Pulse Falcie brands lightning sister serah
The falcie are gods that can brand humans to do their will, and when it is done they become a crystal and dream forever, if they fail they turn into monsters
The choosen branded people are called lcie, your group is all branded by the pulse falcie, enemy of coccon, and your focus is a mistery
The brand grants you magic powers

I understand this is a really common criticism of FFXIII, but I've never understood it. I found FFXIII's plot pretty easy to follow (not saying it's a GOOD plot, mind you) and never had to defer to the datalog for more info. Funnily enough, in the rare instances where I didn't understand what was going on, the datalog didn't contain any clarifying info.

I mean don't get me wrong, the story isn't HARD to follow. Like I get the idea that we're on the run from people and we're also cursed to turn into crystals. But in terms of world building, the game didn't really spend any time on that whatsoever. If you asked me any detailed st uff about the games plot i'd be at a loss.

13 was the last FF made with SOVL, 15 was butchered in dev completely. 13 was also sapped in development but that is a story for another day.

I actually like Lightning as a character in FFXIII. I think fans treated her unfairly as a clone of Cloud Strife even though they aren't really similar at all beyond being taciturn ex-soldiers (which is applicable to multiple FF protags). She starts of cold and abrasive, sure, but by the end of the game she's quite likable.

    fal'Cie = machine gods
l'Cie = humans who are branded by fal'Cie and forced to fulfill a Vision
Vision = a mission, usually vague

It's not really that complicated, it's explained in-game. The data logs are just for additional lore. I do think the story does a poor job of fully taking advantage of the setting though. You just spend a lot of time running in straight lines and barely interacting with anyone or anything.

yeah, this is the only problem with the game
the setting is really cool, but they barely even utilized it and felt like such a waste

Exploration was compromised by graphical fidelity. In order to make FFXIII look as good as it does the devs had to turn the game into a bunch of tight spaces.

        Anonymous

Many aspects of the game that get in the way of that (ie the narrative being focused closely on interpersonal melodrama, or the presentation of protracted fights and cutscenes one after another) predate the conception of the mythology and go back to the original PS2 project's vision of, quote, "interactive Advent Children". What the CT issues really did is make them double down on that direction, because the engine features being developed only as they were requested meant there was absolutely no room to expand the scope mid-development.

Half of this info is wrong. The only Fal'cie that can be considered truly evil is Barthandelus, and that is debatable since Fal'cie morality is different from mortal morality. Both Lightning and Serah were made l'Cie.

The fundamental building blocks of the XIII universe are extremely good, the mythos and structure of its universe is like a mix between FFVI and FFXII.
Sadly, you experience this world through the eyes of the most obnoxious, retarded, moody and downright robotic cast of schizos to grace probably any game.
The pacing of the story is all over the place, the exposition is skipped and shoved into the datalogs in favor of constant BPD meltdowns, literally back to back to back.

It is basically impossible to understand what's going on by just playing as a result.
The focus is entirely on each character's personal flavour of mental illness, and the plot is easily lost.
In short, just skip. It does not get better, not even after the magical 20h mark that XIII apologists keep talking about.

Are XIIIfags still trying to act like it has some deep combat system that you can't just autobattle through?

      Anonymous

The actual meat of the combat is paradigm shifting. It's not the deepest system ever but it requires slightly more thought than the ATB games. There's definitely plenty of fights where you have to pay at least some attention.
Despite its shortcomings, I definitely like it more than FFXII's combat. FFXII's combat lacks any kind of extra hook, it's real-time ATB with zero frills.

        Anonymous

Paradigms are basically just jobs but with all the fun taken out, and autobattle trivializes the whole thing. Plus the whole thing with only being able to control one party member.
XII has issues too but I can appreciate the gambit system for what it's trying to achieve

          Anonymous

          >Paradigms are basically just jobs but with all the fun taken out
          I don't agree.
Jobs are much more concrete and general, you form a party and then stick with it for a while. Roles are meant to be swapped between constantly during battle and have very specific purposes.
          >Ravager: deal damage and increase the stagger meter
          >Commando: deal damage and maintain the stagger meter
          >Saboteur: debuff the enemy
          >Synergist: buff the party
          >Medic: heal the party
          >Sentinel: protect the party
The depth of the combat comes from creating the right paradigms and swapping between them as needed in order to fight as efficiently as possible (increasing and maintaining the stagger meter while also applying buffs and debuffs and keeping the party alive). In the harder fights you'll have to swap constantly.
Autobattle is essentially filler, if you had to manually input every command every time it would get tedious. Though there are some occasions where you want to use specific commands and can do so. It mainly exists to streamline Ravager since all the elements are interchangable and only weaknesses matter.

They thought the future of the series was interconnected multimedia projects based on the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, and to that end created the "Fabula Nova Crystallis" project which would share a "mythology" that was written and designed far in advance of any of the project's games. Japanese media at the time was also going through kind of a phase of nonsense original terminology like that, it's said that the time period was "more chuuni" than usual, and that the pendulum since swang back away from it rapidly.

  29. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

It doesn't matter that much because the sequel basically only cares about two or three things that happen in the original. The qrd is that Fal'cie choose people to become a l'Cie to do their errands, but because this is a FF made after 6 is not straight forward so the l'Cie have to figure out what the Fal'cie wants. That's the plot for 20-25 hours and then the game itself shits on that.

Just enjoy the wild ride, the gameplay is fine if you treat it as a DMC game but with menus, and don't grind, is not necessary and can potentially ruin your enjoyment if you do it.

The combat is more or less the same. You have two fixed party members and your third is a monster you have to capture. It's also structurally better and has towns and NPCs and actual side content.
However, the story is significantly worse, and none of the above improvements make XIII-2 significantly better than XIII, and LR is worse across the board

        Anonymous

The combat is more or less the same but instead of making a party of three dudes choosing from a pool of six, you're stuck with Serah, Noel and whatever Pokémon, I mean, creature you have captured. And yeah, that's also not straight forward, you capture creatures randomly instead of using an equivalent of a PokeBall. Said that, the game gets more challenging so if you are looking for a JRPG that actually offers a decent challenge without going for a weeb dungeon crawler, is a nice option.
The story gets way more convoluted but at the end has a better payoff than the original game.
LR is also pretty cool and underrated.

Honestly the XIII trilogy as games are not bad, they are great even but because they're labeled as FF games people expected too much from the story and lore.

I find Barthandelus to be one of the more compelling FF villains. Beyond the cool design, his motivations are at least somewhat sympathetic. Given sentience but no free will, doomed to serve the whims of humanity for eternity. Meanwhile humans squander their free will by living in a state of fear of outsiders that leads to things like the Purge. It's understandable why he wants humanity destroyed and the rest of Cocoon's Fal'cie free from their servitude.

this game has such a great setting but it is so badly utilized
the first few hours feel like a drag and when things start to get interesting you realize you are already more than halfway into the game
it is very linear and story driven, doesnt allow players to see what the worlds of cocoon and pulse have to offer besides the story

Put as diplomatically as possible: never. The trilogy torpedoing Fabula Nova Crystalis has remained a sore spot for many SE higher ups since. Even if they were to continue dipping into revivals, X-3 remains both the most internally considered and externally demanded.

They sort of have. The 360 version is enhanced on SeX and Xbox One. On PC you can play 4k 60fps. There are also mods to uprez the FMV and models/textures. Tbh, it still looks pretty good on PC with the base game.

that I can agree, the graphics are still holding up well for a 360/PS3 game with non stylized graphics but with all the money and devtime that went into crystal tools that was the least it could do
back then FF still had the reputation of pushing graphics forward

Or you could listen when characters mention that it's all happening because of the Pulse Fal'cie or when Yaag Rosch later explains that every trace of Pulse must be purged so the people can sleep at night because it's the citizens of Cocoon that really demand the Purge rather than it coming from the Sanctum. There are about 6 scenes that plainly spell out the ideas behind the Purge dude

    What about the logo?
What part of the game/history is that?

It's taken from the final scene of the game where Vanille and Fang envelop Cocoon in crystal to stop it from being destroyed from plunging into Pulse. It also resembles Serah and Snow's engagement necklaces, but that's kind of a red herring.

I'm sick of 13 being pidgeon holed as bad because it's hard to keep up or the game doesn't tell you anything.

Where has the ability to make guesses or think on what is put before you? The game, multiple times, explains parts of it's plot and lore clearly for anyone who actually listens.

It's just unfair to this game. There's people I've met and spoken to that refuse to play 13 or even think on it because of everything youtubers said 15 years ago. The worst thing the game has against it is how it was designed making it very linear. Other problems are stuff like the equipment upgrading or the levelling system being annoying.

But no. The characters are bad and the world is bad and it's the worst thing ever made.

VIII, X and XIII were made by the same team. The following are my opinions:
VIII half asses the execution of everything it tries to do but at least it has a lot of soul.
X is the best or among the best of the numbered games in almost every category, except the exploration
    XIII is drizzling shit.

I think the biggest problem with 13 isn't the linearity or the dumbfuck terminology, but the fact that the party has no real mission or goal they're trying to accomplish. The plot is completely directionless for huge chunks. Some of the party members have personal motivations, but as a whole the team doesn't have any kind of mission or objective that they're aiming towards. Sometimes you get a short-term goal, like busting Sazh and Vanille out of prison, but for most of the game you're just fighting battles and running towards the marker on the minimap for no reason other than because you know you need to in order to advance the game. Even times when the party does have an objective, it's usually something fucking stupid, like "run through this ark so we can get stronger because that's what it's there for" or "let's walk halfway around the world to Vanille's village because maybe someone there knows something idk." It isn't until the very end of the game when the party decides that Bart needs to die that you actually have a real purpose.

That lack of direction compounds with the extremely linearity, the total lack of side activities (outside of the hunts, which still mainly consist of just running towards an objective marker and fighting a battle), the Cocoon areas being completely disconnected like Sonic the Hedgehog zones instead of actual places in a larger world, and the slow pace at which the game ramps up the combat complexity to make the whole experience feel extremely tedious. Just an endless slog of running past pretty but vapid wallpaper to the next random battle and occasionally a pointless cutscene, with no end in sight, no sense that you're making any kind of progress, not even a clear understanding of why you should be running that way instead of any other. Just hallways, repetitive battles, and characters talking about their mostly retarded feelings

I still kinda like it though, enough to beat it twice and 5-star every mission

      Anonymous

Aren't they trying to make it to Hope's dad's house for most of the Cocoon segments? Seems like a straightforward goal to me.

      Anonymous

The party had pretty clear goals until they were reunited, they're all too different as people to accept them all wanting the same thing beyond "don't turn into a monster"

Aren't they trying to make it to Hope's dad's house for most of the Cocoon segments? Seems like a straightforward goal to me.

Lightning has decided to fight the Sanctum which would take her through Palumpolum which Hope leverages to get her to take him along with her, he just wants to get strong enough to kill Snow. Snow wants to save everyone and everything but his goals don't really matter, he was kinda kidnapped. Fang wants to find Vanille so she's tracking the party hoping to find her with them, this leads to all 4 meeting up and visiting Hope's dad Bart.
Sazh and Vanille just want to bail, both kinda want to die.

Back in June I downloaded 90gb of HD/4K cinematics as well as HD models for the game and I regretted doing so an hour in. This was even after I used the tweaker mod to make a "Hard Mode".

DAYS of dumbfuck rate limiting NexusMods because mod uploader didn't put the cutscenes up elsewhere.

I thought maybe 10+ years later my eyes would've opened up and I'd enjoy the game but no. I'm considering just watching a "movie" on YT and playing the other two games in the series. I heard LR combat is sweet.
