        This is the correct answer
        >Not Playstation exclusive(no gaems)
        >Moved to ??? direction, makes XII look like core old FF game
        >Cover was everywhere the same, dropping the stylistic logo for the American "main character focus"-FF covers
        >Combat
        >Characters
        >OST is decent
        >Hallway
Ruined FFs reputation forever. Didn't help that XI was MMORPG rather than being called "FF Online", and that XII was huge departure in gameplay and style.

I wonder how much more expensive it would be to rerelease the remake trilogy as a single title and retool it by cutting out all fanfiction garbage for an actual faithful remake. 95% of the games are basically classic ff7, so it couldn't be THAT expensive right

          >95% of the games are basically classic ff7
No, it isn't. The entire ethos of the story is flipped. Take Midgar. In the OG, the slums degraded the people in them. We're shown everyone living in poverty and indulging in vices. In remake, being oppressed makes the slum dwellers VIRTUOUS, because they've absorbed western fetishism of the "downtrodden." There's a reason why in the original OST the track "The Oppressed" is so fricking jaunty.

modern FF is shit since 13, and 12/10 weren't even that good too. ff7r was a scam by not being a true remake and being sold as 3 (or more?) parts, over 2 (3?) generations. they really thought they could milk ff7 fans that much, but got too close to the sun.

There was no big turning point. Just a gradual decline in interest. The hype for a FF7 remake peaked during the PS3 era. People were begging Squenix to make one, yet they were focused on XIII/Versus XIII/XV garbage that nobody wanted or cared about and refused to do it. By the time the announcement came interest had already cooled somewhat, which was eroded further by the news it'd be in multiple parts over a fricking decade or whatever.

They missed the boat. A (complete) FF7 remake on PS3 would have sold gangbusters. Instead they waited and waited until not only had most people stopped caring, but the thing became so fricking expensive to make that they had to sabotage it right from the start.

Yes, they COULD have done it, but the result would have been the biggest flop in the entire history of the games industry. It'd have made Shenmue look like a solid financial investment. They've lost their ass on it even doing it in piecemeal form. It is not a secret or a disputable fact that video games are more expensive to develop now than they were in the PS3/360 days. It simply would have been cheaper to do it back then, and they'd have gotten a much bigger return on the investment too.

FF 13 series back in 2009-2014. That was the start of the down fall. 3 mediocre games that were ashamed to be turn based. FF Versus 13 was okay, but did a lot of things wrong and soured my expectations for all FF there after. I did not like where it was going, I did not like how they handled it, I did not like how they released it, I did not like how they treated us the gamers. FF Versus 13 is the last game I bothered to buy and play.

FF7 REmake hype was 10/10 on reveal.
Then once I heard it was Real Time With Pause my Hype plummeted to 2/10.

Even back in 2000, people were meme'ing on single press auto attack and long cut scenes. FF didn't need more action, it needed more depth. FF 13 went full moron with 30min+ cut scenes and RPG mechanics so brain dead, you could hit Auto Play and the game would play it self.

When I was young: FF > DQ
Now that I'm old: FF < DQ

So this whole chase for "action" to appeal modern audiences that SE is wasting resources on is a pointless endevour.

                >Therefore your combat system being turn based is not a barrier for people buying it.
It absolutely is a barrier, because everything else needs to convince people to bother with your game since the gameplay itself is not interesting to most people, which is BG3's deal and the same way FF used to work before falling out in terms of popularity.
Either that or you need some sort of catch/status symbol like Pokemon, if turn based combat actually wasn't a barrier then the market for turn based wouldn't struggle to get past the 500K sales average and things like roguelikes would be immensely popular, truth is the world doesn't work like that, FF's popularity in the first place wasn't due to the garbage gameplay it always had, it was a result of marketing, good looks and an incredibly lucky market environment where they had no competition at all in the west.

This is not a particularly controversial stance either, even back in the days were Ultima was "king" and at the top of its game the actual sales numbers were bad, if Garriot didn't revitalize the brand with Ultima Underworld the series would have died with Ultima 5-6 because the sales numbers were horrible, people just didn't care for turn based gameplay but Ultima Underworld being an FPS sold much better than any of the mainline games.

                >It absolutely is a barrier, because everything else needs to convince people to bother with your game
If people are not trying your game it is not because of the battles playing in turns. Focus on your game being appealing instead. You just gave another example with Pokemon, which is a multibillionaire franchise.
See it like this, if everything around the combat system is not bringing people in, trying to "fix" your combat won't save your game. Which is what FF has been doing for a long long time.

                >Focus on your game being appealing instead.
I don't know, a good turn based game is extremely appealing to me to begin with, you're only confirming that most people just want to look at something pretty rather than playing a game, or buy into *popular thing* because other people talk about it.
                >if everything around the combat system is not bringing people in, trying to "fix" your combat won't save your game.
Those are pretty damning words in FF's context where the games have zero gameplay elements outside of combat, so again, you're just confirming that people don't really care about turn based combat and only bother when everything else is "appealing", problem is turn based games inherently live or die by the quality of their systems.
Saying that you can get away with shitty gameplay by having "appealing" everything else is just an admission that the casual audience is fundamentally hostile to turn based gameplay, but that is no news for anyone, actual RPGs are niche, always have been and always will be.

I think the last time people were legit excited about a final fantasy game, was final fantasy X.
Look, FF series took off on ps1 not only as a single IP with multiple games on that platform, but because Square Soft back then was shitting all kinds of masterpieces and everyone was happy with them.
After they have become Square Enix, they have restricted themselves to Kingdom hearts and FF games, and people were gradually losing their interest. Then Square Enix decided to go full moron and chase whatever shitty trends were popping out over the years, so they may secure their golden goose. That never happened and now they pay the price.
Nowadays Square Enix is pretty much nothing.

Grew up with all of them it was around 13 but not because of it.
We got 7 8 9 in record speed
10 and 12 kept the PS2 busy and we were also getting kino other square titles. Kh 1 and 2 etc. So even with ff11 robbing us of another ff or two it wasn't a big deal yet.

      13 launched and then.. nothing.
14 was a flop but final fantasy fans still didn't care about mmos so we were all waiting.. and nothing
15 was teased. Game of the lifetime inbound its worth it. Nomura is still king and the target audience is perfect. We're still edgy teens and early 20s.

      Nothing

Then it launches and it's shit.
That VACUUM after 13 literally killed the franchise and it wasn't due to 13. The game was alright. Us fans figured meh they will get em next time. 12 was weird but I loved it and others didn't. This was just one entry I didn't love no big deal.
When people say 14 killed the company or almost did they don't mean financially. It KILLED the ff brand. We didn't get a game for what felt like a decade and when it came out it was dog shit, incomplete and not the original vision us edgelords clamored a decade for.

And what's left? 14. A mid wow clone with good writing but bad execution due to being an mmo.
That game is infested with secondaries and troons but In the modern age the only final fantasy is 14. And us og fans don't like it. What we liked is literally gone.
16 screamed disappointment long before its launch. The ui is too flashy and extra and the combat is a shitty dmc clone. Game of thrones came out forever ago gramps and now you're making a got clone? It's over. We needed a ff9 modern Era style game and they went for slop because all yoshi knows is 14. The game that killed FF is what he wants the brand to be. It's gg.

7 remake is who gives a shit tier. They're alright but I've seen tgese characters for 2 decades.. lol.

    The idea was bad because...

1 - They separated what people believed to be a single long game into three separate instalments that needs to be bought and played in full. Because of this every new instalment will see less interest. You know what people bought when part 2 was released? They'll bought part 1 before buying part 2. The same will happen again. It essentially creates a sort of homework for potential buyers.

The games can't decide if they are remakes or quasi-sequels. They are different enough in narrative thus making them not a proper remake, and they aren't different enough in narrative to make them a properly new story. These games are stuck in a weird place.

Yes and no even if Square Enix declares losses the company is doing great in the eyes of investors. They're still raking cash from FF14 and being a large company with a working content pipeline means they'll continue for quite some time even if everything they make is a middling failure for profit.

People say FF7R is a decent game but yeah from the outside as somebody who doesn't have nostalgia glasses on, why the frick would I buy these remakes? The character designs look stupid I really hate the borderline photorealism style meets 90s manga comic aesthetic. Tifa the iconic bishoujo straight up looks haggard in all the gameplay footage thanks to SE censorship. There's nothing there for me.

I had more fun exploring FF14's world than in any mainline FF I've tried. SE should let those female writers make bigger decisions on mainline FF game direction instead of these morons who make faux medieval homosexualry wank and chuuni shit. People like me want persistent worlds and lore to explore but something more engaging than 20yo placeholder combat from WoW. Maybe they need to host some more internal game jams and figure out what gameplay concepts really add value instead of trying to meet a checklist of AAA sanitized content.

Final Fantasy VII 15,251,183 units sold $999,956,110 gross revenue

    Final Fantasy VIII
12,000,000 units sold $701,362,000 gross revenue

    Final Fantasy XV
10,270,000 units sold $948,100,000 gross revenue

FFXV did well. It sold less than FF7 and 8 did, but that was during a heyday where consumers had few choices. These numbers also do not count spinoffs. The mobile spinoff of FFXV brought in another $500m. So all in all, from a marketing point of view, Square appear to have done the right thing. Two issues though:
    1. these numbers do not take into account inflation
    2. gross revenue does not include costs of production
    3. FFXV put off (even more)older fans of the series and failed to create an equivalent devoted fanbase with new players

when taking that into account, the new direction of Square seems less successful. FF7 took a lot to make for its time but even adjusted for inflation it took less than FFXV probably did. FF7 was certainly more profitable as a standalone title. and moreover the future good faith of the fans has been damaged by 15, then 16 and now also a little with remake which divided fans. I think Square are arrogant and make decisions without considering their reputation and core fans. They're a business so that's natural but it will cause them long-term issues, certainly

They have two massive, executive level problems. What I find really funny is that if you look through Sony and Nintendo's history, it looks like Nintendo is trying to avoid what Sony and Squeenix have been doing - just numbering their products and moving on. It's what killed the original Mega Man series. This has worked out for Sony and Squeenix for the most part, but the one game series that Nintendo ever used that on is Mario Party, and that had the Mega Man effect on me. Only remember playing the early numbered ones, like, 9 on the Wii, and the rest of the series is pretty much lost to time before they released some unnumbered ones on Switch. I think this is what happens when you rely on that kind of marketing strategy too much; even if one of your numbers is really popular, that doesn't mean it will sell well if you poorly time the release. A remake of a Mario game will sell with the kids that never played the original just because it has Mario in the title, youngsters that never played FF7 may feel like they need to play 1-6 first even if that isn't the case. I say this fully aware of the irony that we're calling Nintendo's next console the Switch 2.

At this point I think they just keep numbering it because that's just like, FF's thing now. It might piss some die-hard fans off if they didn't

look at the filename on this comic. the series has been dead since FF13, people were only enticed by the nostalgia and potential of a good remake, but this ended up being Nomura's Wild Ride (p1 of 3)

The frick kind of meme shit is this anyway?
FF7:Rebirth will be GotY, hands down. There isn’t even any competition, it’s so good. The only people that hate on it are Xbots and PCgays because they can’t play it and steal it like Black folk.

Holy frick you losers are delusional. Nobody is even talking about dragons dogshit 2 anymore, you fricking delusional c**t.

Imagine having the entire streaming industry ready to line up and suck your balls dry and become the 2024 Elden Ring and you end up dropping the ball so hard you flop harder than Starfield.

You pieces of shit can stay in the ground where your mid as frick RPG belongs.

Squeenix's problem was trying to turn FF7 into a sub-franchise of its own. Times have also simply changed and JRPG genre is not immune to that change.

If SE can't make a FF7 remake they should close doors because that was the easiest money they could ever pull.
Do you think they will succeed at an IX or VIII "remake"? No. It is literally over for them.

Part 3 will happen. And it will be Nomura, Hamaguchi and Kitase final work on 7. So I don't care what SE does afterwards. It will happen anyway.
Rebirth was one of the greatest games I have ever played, and if the audience is too stupid to see it, it's not the devs' fault.
