I'm a little small indie developer.

I'm a little small indie developer.

And I'm worried, like how the frick are we indies supposed to compete with big AAA titles?

you aren't. but you also don't have to sell a minimum of 3 million copies to just break even.

You aren't. You're competing with the other indies.

See those circlejerking retro streams on twitch? You're exactly like that.

You're like a prostitute on patreon, you depend on your simps to throw a dime your way. Then you supplement that main source of income by marketing your thing onto distibution platforms where thieves take like 20% cut for your game, but in return you might get more simps to pad your proverbian patreon.

Enjoy the life of an indie e-prostitute.

Make a game people are willing to pay money for, get enough sales to break even or make a profit. Repeat.

be a generalist programmer to pay bills, work on games in your spare time. don't ever assume you'll make a living making games. the most successful indie devs were incredibly lucky on top of being talented/determined.

    1.) Make good game

2.) Ask your troony friends at big AAA publishers to give you publicity

    Step 1.) is optional

You're not supposed to compete *directly* because you'll never win, but that doesn't mean indie development doesn't have its benefits. Indie developers don't have to appease committees or share holders for one, so the easiest way to indirectly compete is to come with games that don't have an equivalent in the AAA industry. You could come with some novel idea like Uplink or Minecraft, you could clone some dead franchise you enjoyed like Bug Fables.

Indie titles have the freedom of being able to execute their vision without the compromise of it being watered down by focus groups and desperately trying to please shareholders. Make games with vision, identity and appeal, and you'll probably find your audience that wouldn't get out of bed for the latest, and most boring AAA releases, no matter how many polygons they've managed to cram into it. If you can't see the advantage you have with being truly free to make whatever you want, then I don't know what to tell you.
