Im assisted to AOE2 now I need more rts recommendations Posted on May 24, 2023 by Anonymous I’m assisted to AOE2 now I need more rts recommendations
Broodwar, AoM, Impossible Creatures and warcraft 3, the rest aren't real RTS and in that category you find DoW2, SC 2, Company of Heroes
Yes even C&C isnt a "real" rts because the game has many fatal flaws
I forgot Ganker doesn’t play games…..
Rise of Nations
Truly based. I just wish that it wasn't so hollow outside of the campaign
Stronghold games, the old good ones.
I just I stalled this yesterday. There was a community patch I added too. I'm assuming the extreme edition is the good one? Will play it tomorrow. Took the day off of work anyway
Base versions are the best and most balanced ones. EE is there when you just wanna fuck around with tons of units
I liked stronghold 2 as a kid and it still holds up.
Beyond All Reason
Homeworld Deserts of Kharak
Homeworld Complete Collection
BAR: Beyond All Reason
Men of War 2 (coming soon)
Planetary Annihilation TITANS
Age of Mythology
>BAR: Beyond All Reason
Played this a few years ago and it was sorta ok, pretty neat for an open source indie RTS etc
Gave it another crack yesterday to see how it's plodding along and it's now fucking 10/10 and a nigh on perfect blend of Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander.
It is really great
I'm still amazed at how a free game is contender for the best RTS i've ever played in years. Looks great, plays great, balance is great, has lots of content and the whole "every shot is simulated" makes it more than special
>I'm still amazed at how a free game is contender for the best RTS i've ever played in years.
13 years of pure distilled development autism I suspect.
>13 years of pure distilled development autism I suspect.
Also the fact that the devs are programmers first, designers second
It's got lots of TECHNOLOGY first no other games even attempt to do. But whoever did the latest effects and explosions is the MVP
>Also the fact that the devs are programmers first, designers second
Fucking wish Iron Harvest had some programmers.
What an ugly fucking reminder as to how bad an RTS can be when even the most basic of pathfinding an AI is completely fucked despite it being superficially gorgeous.
>every unit is a bullet sponge
>jank as hell
>"Hero" characters have insane amounts of health and damage, can solo an entire mech with their tiny pistol
Jesus christ where did they go wrong. All I want is company of heroes with mechs.
>All I want is company of heroes with mechs.
Same, Iron Harvest's art direction/world are neat, but the game is such a dumpster fire.
On the upside people are busy ripping all it's content and porting it to Call to Arms kek
I hate the campaign, the characters, the story, the voice acting, the graphics, the colors, the gameplay, the cheating AI, the bad optimization, the maps, actually I don't remember the music but I'd probably hate it too.
Based. Harsh criticism is the real way for improvement.
The unit design is also atrocious.
The best part are all the QoL features like autogroups that somehow no RTS has thought to do before.
>The best part are all the QoL features
I don't think there's a single thing i've ever wanted that isn't in there and so much shit that I never even knew I wanted.
I wish the units didn't have such ugly design.
Best rts ever made.
People who think this are fucking dumb. What a shit series.
World in Conflict for its campaign. Old total war classics like Rome 1, Medieval 2 are also good.
>World in Conflict for its campaign
Second this. Also love that game for running beautifully even on potatos back in the day.
>World in Conflict
Is there a WW2 equivalent of this?
Men of War series
Company of Heroes series
Sudden Strike series
Steel Division series
Combat Mission series
Close Combat series
...and i've played them all exhaustively, but in my heart of hearts I know what I really want is just World in Conflict but WW2.
Empire earth. If that's the one I'm thinking of you can get stealth bombers with nukes and space age stuff.
play her game
I did. And it's a beautiful gem. Wish it had longer campaign.
I bought it for $10 so an 8 hour campaign was absolutely perfect for me. Replayed it recently too.
Fucking finally some people who like Deserts of Kharak. /vrts/ made me feel like there's something wrong with me for liking it.
NOT IN SPACE REEEE
People were complaining that there weren't enough units but that didn't bother me. DOK had like 15 units per faction albeit they all perform more or less the same roles. Rock, paper, scissors type of balance suited me. And I really loved desert maps for some odd reason. Also using carriers as your main base and a weapons platform was so good and satisfying to use.
I always felt the woahhh 3d movement = 4d galaxy brain tactics was a meme. I had more fun with the kharak campaign than HW1 and 2. Other than feeling a bit short it was the only rts I had much fun with since COH.
DoK had the best campaign writing since starcraft 1. It felt like you were actually part of an organized military operation and not just some plucky group of rebels fighting against the whole world to stop the ancient evil from destroying everything else. Very refreshing to have concrete objectives, a logitical support element, and supporting forces.
Reminder that HW-series are just a retelling of garden gnome myths, like dwelling in the desert for their sins and the holocaust.
yeah? it's a good story
so is the christian bible
>retelling of garden gnome myths
We here at Ganker love gnomish myths.
>I’m assisted to AOE2
It's his way of telling us he's a dump phoneposter.
And your way of telling us you're a dumb ESL for not being able to deduce what he actually meant.
dumb ESL phoneposter confirmed
C&C Tiberian Sun
C&C Generals + Zero Hour
Combat Mission : Berlin to Barbarossa
Combat Mission : Black Sea
Supreme Ruler 2020
>Combat Mission : Berlin to Barbarossa
>Combat Mission : Black Sea
>C&C Tiberian Sun
Still hoping this and RA2 get a remaster given the shit Petroglyph dug out of the EA Westwood archives in an attempt to source C&C1/RA1's original uncompressed footage.
I've given up on it happening. it's been 3 years and Petroglyph is working on other shit. Not sure how they dropped the ball this hard, but then again it is EA.
>Petroglyph is working on other shit
Shit is a pretty accurate description of their WW1 RTS attempt.
>rise of nations
they are kinda like aoe+
dark reign 1 and 2
play the SC2 campaign
War of the world's
next time, lurk for 10 years before posting
Man I love Dark Reign. Shame about it's sequel.
How is SC2 irredemable filth? Well worth it for the campaign alone, especially the first, Wings of liberty.
>C&C Generals 2
TODAY I WAS REMINDED
>wait for dawn of war 3
this image aged well
what do you mean? I'm still waiting for dawn of war 3
>C&C: Generals 2
drained and gasped... I fucking hate EA.
wow that shadow realms section is hurtful, besides SC and the C&C games the others I wouldn't describe as irredeemable
Planetary Annihilation was hurt more by drama and weird design decisions than anything else, and the fact that it just gets beat out in it's subgenre by the titan that is supcom. There's a lot of good feature ideas, and adding the space level is interesting, and even the super weapons are fun the first couple of times before the game wears out its welcome.
Grey Goo was a nice attempt at a "classic" RTS just as the genre was entering the dark times, though it was certainly too little too late. Maybe aped star craft a bit too hard, but they tried some things and the campaign was serviceable at least.
And CoH2's problems were more "meta" with the DLC and microtransaction BS, and the game itself got its shit together eventually before Relic fully fell off a cliff
>I wouldn't describe as irredeemable
CoH2 is fucking dogshit
there's a reason half as many people still play CoH1, plus with how many good mods it has.
funny no-one's playing 3, get rekt fucking fagdevs.
all people wanted was CoH1 again with EiR/EF/OMG/Blitz/Jointops mods bundled in and they fucked it, making it pay2win casualized garbage.
Sega also just fired like the whole staff who did coh3
Really? Rest in piss then
cool, but fuck SEGA off and give CoH back to Relic and THQ
I tried grey goo recently and it's not like starcraft, balance seems bad and the unit variety is no good
>World in Conflict
ah now there was some good times. I played that multiplayer way past the point of reason. Shit was borderline solved but calling in airstrikes and artillery is always pleasant. Indeed a pretty kino campaign too
I really wish I had picked this up when it came out, it always looked interesting to me, but I guess it's 100% ded now
RUSE had some cool ideas but it was ruined by some poor design flaws and "you have to win the game in X amount of time or all of your resources run dry.
it was more like a sector control tower-defense game where your units ran down pre-set routes and you used Ruses to feed your enemy false info to bait him out (decoy divisions, blocking his vision of an area etc)
i liked it at first but in the end I wound up just playing it so I could unlock more cosmetics in Settlers 7 in the uPlay store
>age of mythology
>No aoe 3
Have you beat every campaign? You really should, all the new campaigns are really good.
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (use the faf client)
They are Billions
Homeworld and the new homeworld
And not exactly and RTS but frostpunk is fucking amazing
I played one or two but they seemed really boring and simplistic. Also I hate escort missions so the whole Joan of arc is making me groan of Arc
The old campaigns (age of kings and conquerors) are nostalgic for a lot of people, but the teams working on the newer camps made more exciting and dynamic scenarios imo. But if you prefer playing online or playing against the computer in random map that’s cool too.
I haven’t played online yet but I’ve seen some legendary games that have me really excited to play. I mainly have been spamming art of war tutorial trying to gold medal everything but I still don’t know how to play this game efficiently yet. Controls r hard
How was that ground based Homeworld? That thing kinda came and went. Not touched the remasters either, just originals.
It was great
Surely AoE4 isn't that bad, right guys?
It's actually great
Oh no no no no no
Oops forgot picrel
That's really good for an RTS though
I’m extremely surprised aoe4 has half the players of aoe2, I thought it would have fallen off way harder
AoE4 is decent but the SC2 crowd found it too slow and boring, BW players will never change, AoE2 players thought it was too similar so might as well play AoE2
Star craft is so ugly and soulless. I have no idea how that game has such a following. Everything looks the same purple glob alien laser “le future xD” Reddit fucking TRASH
I love starcraft, can't relate
Do you think it looks good?
I like the aesthetics of BW better but SC2 looks fine
it looks a lot better than aoe4 for lol
i dislike sc2 cause it never came close to bw in terms of gameplay but imo its best 3d mp rts which can run even on potato PC.
SC2 "pros" (moronstans) always get memed into aoe 2&4 because of manchild fan base never mentions 3, the game where matches end by the 9min mark
AOE3 is pretty shit in MP
It’s hanging around
This is an AOE2 thread moron
I am, shame about the engine using OpenGL and shitting the bed in large battles though.
>shame about the engine using OpenGL and shitting the bed in large battles though.
What the fuck, it's the most optimized RTS game i've ever played and constantly do 8v8s
Yeah mate you're lying if your fps doesn't drop into the 20s when shit is really hitting the fan.
No they don't because i have a 1060 even although it's 8 years old it isn't 25 years old Vodoo like yours
Happens on 4080s even because it has nothing to do with GPU or CPU utilization, the engine simply can't keep up with all the pathfinding and projectiles when there are hundreds of units on the field. I don't know why you're even contesting it when it's a very well known fact about the game.
beyond all reason, it's a total annihilation clone with some fun extra game modes
Starcraft 2 unironically
BAR is great, but tell me anons, what are some current, like 1-2 years old or upcoming RTS games.
I know of Homeworld 3 and some indie stuff, but most that I can find are boring unoriginal C&C and Starcraft copy rehash.
>4 out of 6 are c&c and starcraft clones
>one is a shitty budget warcraft 3
So fucking tiring. Why do people insist on making the same shit over and over for decades. It's one of the few reasons why AoE4 was bad for me, because it was closer to being just a cheap AoE2.5.
The last one on the pic is also just a new version of an older game but at least that one was unique and hopefully new iteration is going to be an improved version of it.
I'm excited for tempest rising cos it's been awhile since we had a competent C&C clone
Men of War 2
Total War WE WUZ
LOTS of indie space and fantasy/medieval ones as well.
>what are some current, like 1-2 years old or upcoming RTS games
Age of mythology remake
>Age of mythology remake
hopefully that will be on the level of aoe2 definitive
I think you have high expectations. They are remaking the game in a new engine so they will definitely end up cutting corners and censoring stuff.
we'll see, old AoM still works fine and I don't play it anymore anyway, but it would be nice to know that quality stuff is still being made
I still have the CD for AoM. The installer used to show unit information slides, it was really cool.
I am so mad at EA and Westwood because Command and Conquer: Generals and Zero Hour are the only RTS games I want to play against custom AI and the fucking thing is coded so horribly you get a random mismatch (ends the match abruptly) even in an offline singleplayer skirmish.
>I’m assisted to AOE2
somebody explain what does that mean, i even tried translator and still dont get it
This is fun for single player
>tower defense game
First TD is a fun genre, second, you have the wrong game, retard.
Show me the base building of that game then
It's more of a tactical game, but that doesn't mean TD, RTT is better than RTS anyways
>RTT is better than RTS anyways
Well, what a shitty opinion.
>RTS: follow building macro then 'A' move all units on the enemy base
>RTT: deep combat system that requires ACTUAL tactics, terrain analysis and witty
Retard. You will never understand the worth of comfy RTS games.
He's not wrong about typical RTS "macro" just being "don't forget to queue units" which is entirely pointless APM bloat.
>complains about RTS being played with typical macro
If you are playing RTSs like you are playing competitive multiplayer all the time then you are playing it wrong.
"typical macro" is not an excuse, BAR has shown just how much better RTS can be if you do without such archaic design limitations and focus more on overall strategy, map control, economic balance and micro
and then you have Zero-K which has even more and better mechanics and tools to let the player focus on things, rather than having to zoom around and babysit retarded units and base expansion
>entirely pointless APM bloat.
as if there isn't pointless apm bloat when controlling units by clicking the same pixel 1837 times a second
All video games can be distilled to pointless clicking if you think about it.
It might be a simple C&C clone but I still like it, especially with the expansions.
I considered getting it on sale, I saw there were so many differente 8-bit games though
>tfw no Mechcommander fan game using the Spring RTS engine
Life is suffering.
Esports has ruined AOE2.
I tried it out a few months ago when it was on sale. Even the in-game tutorials now teaches you how to execute build orders and target certain times for age up/units built etc. The MP is basically 100% no fun allowed, you will do the xbow/knight spam or you will lose. Even though the game is largely the same, the magic just isn't there anymore.
I guess the campaign is still kinda fun even though I've already played through all of them in the OG edition.
You can always join noob friendly diplo games
DEAD GENRE LOL
>don't make a good game in over a decade
>people finally catch on to you
I'm surprised Sega hasn't closed them outright but I guess they're hoping for Homeworld 3 to turn out go... oh, wait. Relic isn't even doing Homeworld 3. Honestly surprised they haven't just closed them in that case. Maybe they have some remaining contractual obligations with AoE4?
>bad game studio closes
Tell me it is bad for RTS games again? This will lead to better competent studios to take up the RTS mantle.
Surely Starcra- I mean Stormgate will save us
Lol no that is dead on arrival but tempest rising has some chance.
Outside of blackbird I have no faith in any modern RTS developer. The best I can hope for is a RA2 remaster from petroglyph which I'm half convinced they will fuck up and outsource it to some Malaysian art farm.
Has there been any news on more C&C remakes? Seems weird they would pick the most boomer entry then skip the shit everyone actually wants.
>The best I can hope for is a RA2 remaster from petroglyph which I'm half convinced they will fuck up and outsource it to some Malaysian art farm.
Didn't EA manage to throw away the development material for RA2 just like they did with the Bladerunner game?
>Outside of blackbird I have no faith in any modern RTS developer
God if only Westwood or ensemble studios were still alive.
Both EA and Microsoft regret closing them. Looking at Microsoft now scratching at the dirt for absolute shit tier developers is sad. EA's entire history is criminal yet Westwood stands out as one of their worst crimes.
If only they could have seen how rare and valuable good developers are, they only appreciate them when everyone is gone and all the money in the world now buys them teams full of pay check collecting grifters. I resent respawn for allowing themselves to be bought and revive EA, they were 1 step away from facing the consequences of their actions.
Westwood was also multi-talented. They weren't just a one-trick pony game dev who only excelled at one genre. Real fucking shame what EA did to them and pushing for C&C and nothing but C&C later on its studio life.
Desperados series giving me some Commandos vibes yeah. Will check those out when a sale comes along.
I hope that their sins will haunt them and their gaming ventures falter so that we can have better, more competent publishers and decent developers back again. Here's to a dream that the Golden age of RTSs will be reborn.
>Has there been any news on more C&C remakes?
on this, how was the C&C1 remake?
from what i heard it was pretty good, like Diablo 2's remaster.
is it worth the $5 it is on sale sometimes?
It's one of the few remasters where I've sat on the new graphics nearly the whole time, and it does the thing (which all of these should do) with the realtime graphics toggle. I love the remaster, although you'll have to excuse their attempts at AI upscaling/smoothing shitty low-rez interlaced 320x200 source videos since they couldn't find the uncompressed originals (they actually tried to find them). Wish they just kept the option to play the original vids since the game install actually includes all of the OG game files in addition to the new ones, so they could have simply pulled from that.
Other than that, it's a 95% faithful remake. Near every single quirk/exploit/bullshit-AI thing is in there, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Main highlight of the package is Klepacki remastering all of the music himself. Fucking hell it still sounds fantastic.
The only thing I can say is if you've never played C&C1, it might feel dated compared to the RTS to follow it. The AI cheats (as it did in the original due to bugs), and once you learn certain strategies/setups, you end up abusing them because the game gets unfair as hell later in the campaigns.
>love Commandos series to death
>can't seem to ever get into squad-based RTS
Does the Commandos series even count as an RTS? Fuck I could use more games like it.
You could try shadow tactics or desperado 3. They are clearly influenced by commandos but they are not very subtle or serious like it.
>get that RTS itch
>zoomers online said that northgard is the best RTS they've played
>try it out
>it's literally a mobile game with bare minimum RTS mechanics
This is getting ridiculous. Why does every single current day devs get the RTS formula do wrong? They keep adding unnecessary mechanics and delete necessary ones when the RTS formula had already been perfected back in 2000s.
RTS is a strange genre where all the tangentially related or successor genres blew up and became mega popular but the source hit a brick wall and died instantly.
MOBA, grand strategy, 4x, srpgs all thriving while RTS is permanently ded.
Isn't grand strategy also glued to effectively 1 publisher that has 3 well established series and everything else tends to implode?
I had this exact same experience and thought I must have played the wrong fucking "Northgard", because it is absolutely mobile tier yet heralded as some great RTS for the ages.
>C&C - dead
>Warcraft - dead for 20 years
>Starcraft - dead
>World in Conflict - bought by Ub*Soft and now they help with AC
>CoH - shitty third game, already dead
>Stronghold - dead
To continue the list,
>The Settlers - dead
>Dawn of war - third game killed it
>supreme commander - ded
>Total annihilation- also dead
keeps getting clones made of it
no new games, but has a few shitty indie copies and war3 has alive community
wouldn't want to see anything new from current blizz anyway
same as warcraft
yep, dead and maybe has one similar game to it. small active community still plays
yes, but community still pretty much alive for CoH2 too
new one released two years ago
new one released a few months ago
yeah, it's dead
both previous games have alive community as far as I know with mods being made
Sanctuary might be good, but FAF is alive
spring engine games are good and alive
tbh I don't even know the point of your posts
This is a huge cope post. The point is none of the shitty clones or iterations are even remotely close to being good. Hence they are considered as dying or dead.
>The point is none of the shitty clones or iterations are even remotely close to being good
only true for c&c and sc, but if you clone trash you get trash so that's understandable
The best to ever do it
HOMEWORLD 3 WHEN?
Have the most fun in CoH with this simple trick!
>Hah hah nebelwerfer barrage go poowam poowam poowam
RTS/RTT bros... Will this game be another stinky or will it actually be any good?
Probably depends on your tolerance for jank.
