I'm going to get my 1st ever gaming laptop this holiday and it's pic related. I want to have it on my chest while I'm lying in bed, and I put a binder between my chest and my current laptop.

I'm not going to entertain an argument about getting a "small form factor PC".

My maximum budget is $2500, is there a better gaming laptop???

I don't have a desltop PC although I DO have a 32'' 4K monitor. It sits on my dresser in front of my desk.

I could just plug in my 1440 resolution gaming laptop and enjoy 4K resolution gaming output.

It amuses me that so many people sperg out over gaming laptops, not everyone has a big room.

you know when they say a laptop has like a 4070ti that in reality it's going to run like a videocard that would be $200-300 cheaper in a desktop right
because you are jamming all the shit together in a little plastic box that can't run much electricty through it or its shitty cooling will fail

plus they always break within a few years because the hot and cold cycles and motion/flexing will rapidly age the solder joints

        no gaming laptops ever ever

          Anonymous

Actually the "entry tier" cards are usually pretty close to their desktop counterparts, but the higher you go, the more the gap widens. Laptop 4070 and 4090 are total scams for example (one's a 4060ti and the other is an energy starved 4080 that performs more like a 4070ti)

It's not awful, honestly. 5.5 lbs is decently light for a machine specced like this, but I'd be very concerned about cooling. You may be better serves with something like Asus' Zephyrus line. They're lighter and better specced, but also more expensive. My biggest gripe with Acer is they're somewhat more difficult to open for cleaning, whereas Asus is usually very accessible, but I'm only going off of personal experience.

Don't get an intel CPU, their newer gens are god awful.
Don't bother with anything that's 8GB VRAM or below, as games are already pushing past it.
Basically, this means you need a laptop that's at 3k$+, otherwise you literally get beat by a 800-1000$ PC with 2 gen old parts (3 years old+).

      Anonymous

      >don't bother with anything less than 8GB
VRAM e-dick measuring is entirely placebo. Realtime game tests prove this.

        Anonymous

I would've agreed with you if it was 2 years ago, but VR games, newer AAA titles, Unreal 5 titles and so forth are showing up to be pretty VRAM hungry and having more than 8gb is easily not enough for a 'smooth' experience. Slightly older games are already hovering at around 6-8gb at 1080p/1440p (ex. CoD). VRAM is 'enough' until it suddenly isn't. A good example is the RX580 4GB vs 8GB. One is currently borderline unusable, while the other one can still run most newer games at acceptable performance.

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro that has lasted me for OVER 12 years. I upgraded the HDD to a 1TB SSD and then eventually to a 2TB SSD over the years. I also upgrade the RAM to 16GB which is the maximum. I also almost ALWAYS use my Macbook on top of a cheap binder on my chest while I'm lying in bed. This makes browsing the web SO MUCH more comfier, I can NEVER see myself NOT doing this with my gaming laptop.
I want a gaming laptop that will last me 10-12 years and my maximum bidget is $2500-$3000, most likely $2500. My room is really small and only has 2 outlets and so a gaming laptop makes sense. I can't get a "small form factor PC" because my desk is too small, especially with my drawing tablet/Switch there. I also imagine that I have to buy a big desk just for a PC since there's so much parts I have to assemble, not to mention assembling the desk which is out of the fucking question. I've already made up my mind on getting a gaming laptop.
My early 2011 Macbook Pro probably has 1 more year left from now just for regular browsing and art/video making.

This will be my 1st gaming laptop, is there any gaming laptop that's better than pic related???

Sounds like the laptop was overheating due to Windows's dogshit sleep-state handling that will cook a CPU randomly every once in a while.
Not really Dell's fault, and the beeping is to warn you that a piece of hardware is approaching a critical failure point. It's a feature, not a bug 🙂
Alienware is now owned by Dell, yes. But Dell probably has the most ambitious and experienced engineering division out of any manufactures for gaming laptops. We never really get any in for any hardware related issues.

Lenovo's Legion line or ASUS's Zephyrus or M16. They have about the same (good) build quality, albeit the ASUS machines are more compact and slim design. Downside for ASUS being they will get hotter (shorter component life span), and the GPU+CPU will thermal throttle or TDP throttle in modern titles. Downside for Lenovo is we see them sometimes with BIOS/iGPU/MUX switch issues from time to time.

22" is the minimum screen size for me, anything smaller is not worth it.
If I had to bring a pc with me, I'd just spend $700 on some cheap ass laptop and play 2D old games exclusively I guess. Then I'd use the remaining money on a real computer.

I have a 32'' 4K monitor and and I can just hook up my gaming laptop to it and enjoy 4K output.

Gaming in bed isn't all it's cracked up to be, I've found it's better to keep that contained for just general shenanigans while your primary rig is the classic desk setup and having a hookup to your TV in case you want to lounge.

nah i like having a bedside console like a wii u or a steam deck, a gaming laptop is not it though, shits a fire hazard if you're gonna play it on the bed, plus you gotta hook up headphones, controllers/mouse, maybe even an HDD, it's just a lot of shit

I strongly advise you not to do it. They run hot, are noisy and never reach full capacity since they're throttling all the time.

Best to spend that money into a streaming device you can easily have in bed with you.

There’s really no advice to give if you NEED the gaming laptop just buy it, you already know the downside, you’ll be having trouble with new games on that 3070ti before long, so if you don’t care then enjoy.

Cheers anon. I just want a gaming laptop that will last me 12 years like my early 2011 macbook pro has.

That's not too much to ask and I'm not even looking for the highest specs possible, just a reliable long-lasting gaming laptop. My budget is $2500 and I prefer a 15'' screen max, 32GB RAM, 2 TB SSD. I'm just don't know about what NVIDIA specs I should get though, I'm seeing different suggestions.

Well what is it you want to play and how well do you want to play it? 12 years is a lot to ask from any computer. Laptops are weird and have different manufacturers than desktop parts, so who can tell how well made they are without some researching on google and gaming forums or Reddit.

You don't need 4k on a fucking laptop dude, but i doubt there's 3070 ti /3080 ones with 1080p panels.

This laptop doesn't have 4K support, just 1440p.

I DO have a 4K monitor and I could just plug in my gaming laptop and enjoy 4K output. 🙂

Get a lenovo legion 7, I don't care how much over the budget you have to go, just get it and never have to worry about gaming again.
