1-4 are the good ones (2,1,3,4), after that the series takes a serious downward spiral. Silent Hills could've been amazing, but it was murdered in the crib, because the head of Konami was mad Kojima had a bigger penis and wanted him out of the company. The company has done nothing since Kojima left.

Only 2 was any kind of profound art piece. I liked 1, 3, and the room, but they just don't have the same level of narrative. 3 tried, but the "issa spooky cult" shit never did it for me like SH2.

SM was pretty good, but not survival horror.
That being said, majority of all SH fans that were actually ALIVE back in the day that SH died when Konami sacked the whole Team Silent, back in 2005. These nu-demakes and valor stealing spinoffs and films will not change this.

        >I liked 1, 3, and the room, but they just don't have the same level of narrative.
SH1 literally does everything 2 is given credit for, but better, and with more depth.

What mKes you feel that 1 has such a better narrative?

Nta but the level of nuance and sophistication with its symbolism in occultism and esoteric lore as a means of storytelling are unprecedented. if you know, you know. otherwise it seems like filler.

so much of what is in silent hill 1 is purposeful and is done correctly but you need to understand occultism.

          >What mKes you feel that 1 has such a better narrative?
For starters, it does not spoonfeed all the details on a single run, nor does it do silly "gotcha!" memes with the premise. It also properly utilizes the INTERACTIVE nature of vidya in the storytelling, revealing more the more you explore and play the game.

they're almost certainly going to add a bunch of stuff for better or worse to pad out playtime, like newgame+, new endings and stuff.
they're not really going to sell an 8 hour game for $80, or are they?

You think they're going to pad out a 6 hour game to the point it's worth taking a fricking week off of work to play it?

all of them except shatter memories and that weird PSP dungeon crawler one, but I'm not going to rush through the game in a single day. I want to savor it because I doubt we'll ever get another remake.

I'll waste countless hours exploring the town for obscure secrets and Easter eggs which will significantly pad the play time. If the game turns out to be too short to pad out then I'll just see how fast I can get my clear time within the week like I did when I played RE Village.

In fact they wanted at first to make a remake of SH1 until moron Motoi Okamoto came and said that SH2 would be a better choice because it's the one that truly represents silent hill or some bullshit like that.

        >drowned people.
They're cursed with undeatg because they ate a space alien. It's a mix up between an old japanese fairy tale about a mermaid and HP Lovecraft's shadows over insmouth. It possibly inspired later re tellings of SOI such as bloodborne or the latest call of cathulluh game because the cursed folk eat the great old one as opposed to sleeping with the children of dagon.

Toyama is pretty good at mixing up stories like that and coming up with something unique. Like how Silent Hill took the setting of Phantoms and made the culprit a Carrie-style psychic girl instead of a shapeshifting blob monster.

Phantoms is about a foggy, mysteriously deserted resort town crawling with weird monsters and scenes of horrible violence where the town's emergency siren goes off when weird things start to happen. One of the main characters is also the sheriff from the next town over who was sent with his deputies to find out what happened after they suddenly lost contact, just like Cybil in SH1. The novel is from the early 80s and sounds exactly like it's describing Silent Hill in a lot of places.

The message in the school bathroom is straight from there too. Arguably the giant moth too since it's one of the more memorable bits from the book/movie but giant bugs are also a horror staple.

I always liked that there was a somewhat grounded reason for people seeing the other world in Silent Hill. At least that is how it started. In SH1 the cop lady tells you all about this cult and drugs and in SH2 James is an alcoholic. It leaves that impression that it could all just be in your head.
