I'm replaying this game again after maybe 15 years, and it's really solid. Yes, it "misses the mark" in some respects, like some wonky bosses, some characters you can't care much about, a slightly odd story, the zap and item drop systems are kind of awkward, etc. But it really shines in creepy atmosphere and nails other fundamental aspects of survival horror like exploration, puzzles, ammo conservation. Plus it has some of the best songs in entire series IMO. Like these:

The train is the best intro section to any RE game imo, but I always seem to start losing interest afterwards. I do like the two main characters a lot though, and the soundtrack is great as expected. I also enjoyed being able to create my own storage areas wherever I wanted. I enjoy playing without the storage boxes linked in other RE’s, so this was like a happy medium.
Something about it just feels “off” though and I can’t put my finger on it.

Why is the train the best intro?

it’s the new mindlessly repeated thing about this game for those who chime in without ever playing it. this board is entirely a joke

Right? There are many such instances.
People read utter crap about a game and mind trip themselves in their delusion that they experienced it as well.
          Sad!!

          Its comfy

          Sure, a comfy survival horror.

        >storm adds atmosphere
        >I like trains and busses in horror. Running through the bus during RE2 intro is also iconic to me
        >the puzzles are fun
It’s a good intro. It being the “best” is just my opinion based off of what I like.
0 has just been a hated game for years now, so people admitting that there’s a good part to it is obviously gonna be controversial.

          Agree, it's good and memorable.
Loved the bus. Frick the zombie on the floor!
0 is OK, but clearly not among the very best.
Could a game like that be made by like six people nowadays?

Good introduction to the RE gameplay loop, makes decent use of the two character gimmick, fantastic atmosphere, has a fun action puzzle finale to cap it off.

I played it for the first time in 2021 and loved it.
The atmosphere is very comfy and the game's visuals are fantastic.
I really liked the inventory management and I often tested how the AI partner would deal with the monsters with the different weapons I gave them.
A lot of people seem to have had a problem with the hookshot taking up two inventory slots and being an item that you only need at a specific time.
    It wasn't my case.
I always play methodically, so for me it wasn't a problem at all, as I kept all the items in a single main room, advanced a little in the exploration and came back to replenish ammo and leave the key items in one place.
So I treated the game to myself following a very similar logic to a dugeon crawler.
Following the classic loop of this type of game of exploring the dungeon and returning to the city to resupply.

The story is very goffy and fun, I had a good laugh at the absurdities of the narrative.
I also never cared about the Resident Evil canon, so the inconsistencies with the first game didn't bother me.
My theory for this game having a bad reputation is because it was tied to a Nintendo platform for a long time, so the criticism it received at the time only came from specialized media outlets.
Probably some journalists didn't like the game for whatever reason and as there were no other points against it, this analysis of the game was the only one that was replicated for years.
It would be like taking the infamous analysis of Doom by Edge magazine and basing the quality of the game for years solely and exclusively on that analysis.

tldr; few people played it and many people today just replicate the opinion of some journalists at the time of launch

I feel it’s more recent revisionism. At least I remember things like EGM gave it a good review, and I liked it back then.

I played it when it was re-released some years back, and I didn't hate it, but I didn't find it all that engaging.
I agree with what I've seen others say, that the train is really good, but that the rest of the game is pretty middling and not that good, I felt the same when playing at the time.

The thing that kills my apprecation of 0 is that the gameplay is subpar, and the 2 main reasons why it is subpar is because
    >animations are too long
This was the peak of the era when devs were all "Look how many dozen frames I can cram in a single animation!!! Looks so cool and smooth!!" without stopping to wonder how it affects gameplay
    >enemies have way too much i-frame
This is in combination of the above too. You know how, in RE1, you can't hurt a Hunter while it's getting up? Well in RE0 it's like that but for so many enemies and for so many more animations than just getting up too. The Leechmen are the worst in that regard I swear to god I still have no idea when I'm actually damaging them and when I'm not which is why I always resort to spamming molotovs on them.

Wanna know why people think RE0 is the hardest? Because they wasted a shit ton of ammo shooting at enemies and doing no damage (and in return potentially getting hit, too, because your down time after shooting is high) because of this shit.

Webm sorta related. The biting animation is so fricking long that the damage is registered beofre you even get hit.... What's the point of being able to have the second controller help you I wonder.

      >animations are too long
This is definitely annoying, at least at first. It's a stark contrast to something like Code Veronica which has very snappy animations.

RE0 is just the hardest Resident Evil game and that's why people either avoid it or malign it. There's not much else to its reception, it's one of the most difficult survival horror games ever made and filters more people than even Dino Crisis.

It's not actually a bad game, but combine with expectations based on REmake and RE4, and how the first part, the train, actually really does measure up well to that, but that the rest of it is just kind of ok, and I think what you get is that a lot of people feel cheated.
That isn't perhaps fully fair, but it's how it is at times.

      Rebecca is indeed unbearably cute.

A lot of this game is made up of shit cut from RE1 and 2 so it's a nice illustration that cut content is typically cut for a reason.

I couldn't even say generally, very often when a good game had a good sequel, the new good stuff was at least partially based on concepts for the first one which were cut for reasons such as not having enough time to finish it, or because the technology at the moment just limited what could be done.

I could imagine that it's more like you said with more recent game development though, like in the 2010s and on, where teams are far larger and there's much less personal touches in games in general.

The game was just inconvenient. The item system designed to make the game artificially different had the opposite effect when you just leave everything on the floor in a central safe location

It's basically identical to the crank in RE1 when you get the battery or the wheel in RE2.

Only with the added annoyance of not having item boxes.
