were crits not in Gothic 1?

        Anonymous

They were a thing, but you and npcs had at most 10% chance to crit and it only doubled a weapon's damage.

          Anonymous

I just read that you only do 10% of a weapon's damage when you don't crit. thats insane. Also I've never played G2 Classic, only NOTR where I hear everyone is quite buffed from the standard game

            Anonymous

Yeah Gothic 2 original was mostly like gothic 1 damage dealing wise. NOTR made it so the only time you do full damage is when you crit. Otherwise you are just doing around 10% of damage each swing

            Anonymous

That's NotR style, yeah. Strength plus weapon damage divided by 10. But it's not that bad because usually 10% of your damage is enough to take away a decent portion of enemy health, and also it allows you to progress your character in funny OP ways, for example putting every point you have into weapon skill and then you end up critting every time, going through half of the game with a shitty cheap sword and dominating everyone in your way. There are also dex-based weapons, iirc those have insane damage stats but low strength in dex builds debuffs them because dex weapons don't count dexterity into damage, despite that they're crazy strong when your weapon skill is high because every hit is a crit.

It's not a bad system on its own, it's a bad system for first time playthrough. NotR was originally an add-on sold to people who already went through basic G2, so they were trying to make things interesting for them, and in that context, I think they've succeeded for the most part.

You need lots of modern patches and whatnot. One thing you definitely need is system pack, another thing you might want is dx11 renderer. System pack makes gothic run on modern systems, dx11 mod brings in lots of benefits that come from, well, modern renderer (effortless alt+tab, faster saving iirc), but you have to save on multiple slots because it corrupts saves once in a blue moon and that's never nice

dx11 mod also brings dx11 graphics, but other than rain effects it's reasonably toned down so i'd say it genuinely improves the game instead of bringing in nasty unbalanced shit into visuals, that's up to your tastes though. Also, nearly every effect can be disabled.

      mercenary/dragon hunter > paladin > fire mage

You've got 2 choices, putting everything into one-handed weapons and strength or a dexterity bow build, with some points put into one handed weapons and strength. You can either go merc or militia with these 2 builds.

I swear by magic heavy builds in both games
the start isn't easy, but there's a glorious feeling of power somewhere in the mid game and you keep getting new powers, while with strength/dex builds you pretty much play the whole game the same way.

Im in chapter 2 in gothic 2, only really use fire arrow and goblin skeleton with every other point put into getting 91 mana. Any tips?

          Anonymous

for me it was skeletons and ice block for a while
if you're feeling devilish you can summon skeletons around NPCs, skeletons kill them for XP/loot and the NPCs don't turn hostile to you at any point.
You can one-hit kill any enemy in the game by targeting kill undead on your own skeleton, but hitting the enemy instead.

Playing mage is just bad in G1 and G2. Then again, playing melee is extremely bad in G3, so it evens out.

            Anonymous

I wouldn't say that it's bad but it's not as strong as dumping everything into strength and one hand

            >Playing mage is just bad in G1 and G2.
mage isnt so bad in g1 because you have so many points that you can afford some 1handed weapon s kill to make up for no mana early game
G2 makes you suffer until you can make the game suffer, but theres a lot of things you can exploit to get around being a weak ass fool with no mana

I find Fire Mage to be the best route, though it suffers from lacking mana early or suffering slowly from a lack of good melee damage. Once later summons/transformation/offensive spells are available you feel like a god.
I'd love to get a replay in but I'd just end up abusing the blacksmithing money exploit again.

Aren't there some total conversion mods? Are they worth playing? I don't care for gameplay overhuals or graphic changes. I like how the original game looks and feel just fine.

Archolos is, in eyes of many, better than original G2. It's not total conversion, it's a different game on the same engine. It's insanely high-effort mod, got awards everywhere, very very much worth a try.

Saying it's better than original Gothic 2 is a really big claim IMO. A lot of the quests in that mod are very tedious. They definitely put a lot of effort into it though.

            Anonymous

Yeah, some would say that, some wouldn't, but I think fact alone that this kind of claim can even be considered and debated instead of outright calling someone a moron is impressive enough. Archolos city is crazy impressive, mod feels consistent everywhere maybe except for tutorial chapter, story is told from beginning to the end and it genuinely fits into lore. Could be better, could be not, but it's insane that considering this possibility is even within reason.

              Anonymous

I feel like if they just shrunk the size of the city down a bit, it would be way better. Even if I drink a speed potion, all of the running around that you have to do to complete a quest is really annoying. And in the later chapters, the city changes so once you memorize where everything is, you have to do it again.

the only total conversion mod i played is legend of ahssun, which is huge and fully voice acted (at least in german) and quite fun to play, but the story is silly at times.
there are some mods that add quests or even new levels and mechanics, nostalgic is pretty good and adds the sleeper temple, the orc cemetary and the swamp camp among other things. some of these additions are nonsensical, but i don't really mind.
renovation adds a lot of things, among new quests, weapons and spells many npcs fulfill new functions that give value to otherwise worthless items. it's quite a bit harder than vanilla though. returning falls into the same category, only that it also expands the story by multiple acts and locations.
i can't remember when was the last time i had a vanilla notr playthrough because the mods really keep things fresh. i'd suggest you give them a try, legend of ahssun is pretty good if you're looking for something completely new, unfortunately it has quite poor performance because the map is so full the engine can't quite handle it.

Different anon but I never ran into any problem with melee as long as I had some speed potions in reserve and carefully chose my fights.

the dragon fights outright suck without support as a melee in notr.

          >the dragon fights outright suck without support as a melee in notr.

I remember finding a certain spot that you can stand where you can slash and then they fly away without attacking then you can slash again. It's definitely annoying without summons if you don't find that spot to stand though

I'm in chapter 5 and I'm about to drop that mod because the quests are so tedious and boring. Each quest has 12+ steps and they all involve running to various points around a gigantic city. I loved chapters 1 - 3 though.

      Anonymous

i dont see how they could possibly make a remake good.
they are definitely not going to keep the combat, but the combat in a way is kind of purposefully bad until you get weapon skills. But if they take that out the game is just going to be a cakewalk unless they add like dark souls enemy AI or something which i doubt they have the budget for
so either they keep the combat and no one but 30-40 year old grognards buy the game, or they change the combat and nobody buys the game cause no fricking younglings give a shit about gothic. i just dont see anyway this game can come out well

i'm sure people being c**ts will be an integral part of the game, i'm worried about general gameplay and combat. But no matter what it's gonna be, I'm sure i'll love playing through G1 world and story in fresh graphics, this cannot possibly go wrong, even if everything else sucks.

Having a great time playing this game for the first time as well. Currently getting gang raped by black goblins.

I'm at the point where I need to pick a camp, and I'm finding it quite hard to choose. Diego alone makes the Old Camp seem like a good idea, but you can't even meet their leader until after you join unless you abuse the sword thing to get inside the castle. The New Camp are at least trying to escape even if their plan seems terrible. The cult are a weird cult, but they were sort of funny I suppose.

In Gothic 1, is there much of a difference between the camps? How much does each playthrough change?

      Anonymous

Not much in terms of story. Some different initial quests, then you have a different reason to go down into oldcamp mine, and then it's more or less the same. Context-wise, it's considerably different of course, you get different dialogues, different access to specific locations, and report to different people.

      Anonymous

mostly determines how you build your character
swamp camp locks you into to a weakass melee/magic hybrid. New and old camp are more intertwined due to events in the game but new camp is best for 2handers, and despite newcamp being where you get 6th circle spells its best to start with old camp as a fire mage for magic. both new and old camp got melee trainers too

story/quest content not so much since the game will send you around the map and youll pick up pretty much all of the quests in each camp regardless of if youve joined them.
