You know what? Avatar is an overrated show and was lightning in a bottle. They clearly couldn't ever replicate the success of the original, no matter how many media formats and attempts they try.
    >live action movie sucked

    Would an AtlA MMO work?

Why would it not be able to work is the better question. It would take passion, a miracle and massive budget to do well and succeed but fundamentally I don't see why not. I think it would be cool to have four factions to join with a different element. Then you'd have builds within each of them.

Forklifts were invented in 1917. LoK is heavily based off the 1920s, and takes inspiration from being set after the steampunk era's technological leap. A forklift in ATLA is the equivalent of someone using a smartphone in the 1950's

          Anonymous

People tend to forget how quickly technology has evolved in the real world. Smartphones have only been around for just under 20 years and they've completely replaced a staggering amount of gadgets people used to use daily. I haven't owned a landline telephone since 2006.

To be fair, technological progress was always fricked in the setting. Most of the world was still a feudal shithole while the fire nation somehow developed early industrial capabilities. What actually surprised me is how easily technology actually spread, it took only one avatar cycle what IRL took a couple of centuries to achieve.

            Anonymous

Yeah, but the technological superiority of the Fire Nation also made sense in-universe. They were the only nation that actually needed these kinds of advancements so they were the only ones actively developing it.
Air Nomads were traditionalist as frick and likely didn't care for tech at all.
Water tribes were two decent groups completely surrounded by ice and water, allowing them to make anything they need. The third water tribe were literal swamp people.
The Earth kingdom is similar to the water tribes in that they had everything they needed, but even then we do see some amount of technology in the bigger cities such as Omashu's postal system and Ba-sing-se's trams.
Fire doesn't do any of those things, and especially doesn't have the defensive capabilities of water and earthbending. That's exactly why they would be the ones to develop better armor, because they'd get absolutely mogged otherwise.

              >They were the only nation that actually needed these kinds of advancements

It's kind of weird how the best metal handlers were the fire nation instead of the actual natural born miners. Even if the earth benders didn't know they could bend metals, they could have very well made legendary mining complexes with what they had.

Air Nomads also had ease of transport with the bisons, so they had no reason to develop ships or anything like that.
Water tribes were largely isolated although they did travel and trade to some degree, but it seems they weren't prone to adopt outside ideas either.
Earth Kingdom had major issues with internal conflict and political instability on a large scale likely preventing them from developing new technology. Although, while the Fire Nation had similar issues it was nothing in comparison to the Earth Kingdom.
Also a propensity to lean towards metallurgy as that other anon pointed out is likely also a big reason the Fire Nation developing technology.
It's actually kind of reflected in their choice of weapons you see in the show as well.
With Water Tribes using natural materials such as bone, and with Earth Kingdom using metal scarce weapons such as spears and Halberds if not just resorting to pure bending.
Meanwhile you've got the Fire Nation employing swords a lot more.

I didn't mind the concept that LoK is based off the 1920s, but it felt lazy how it was just used as an excuse to justify mecha robots. LoK sliightly touches upon technology vs magic and adapting to a changing world tropes, but it focused too much on pointless drama.

            It's really not.
Let's throw it into perspective during another time IRL:
In 1820, people had to use lanterns and candles to light a room.
In 1890, people had electrical circuits to light up glass bulbs to light a room.
In that same time fame, semiautomatic firearms were invented and gaining popularity.
In that same time frame, the telephone was invented and started making its way into peoples' homes.
In that same time frame, the phonograph was invented.

Yeah this is one of the core issues in Korra. ATLA's world felt natural because of the way bending impacted their technology. Korra just goes 'nope' and changes it all to fit an aesthetic that doesn't work for the world.

It's kind of weird that non-benders aren't like, dying out since they objectively have less potential than benders. The most plausible explanation is that bending takes a lot of off-screen effort and training to do anything with it, and we see mostly prodigies as the main cast. Meanwhile, non-benders and benders that don't train their bending 8 hours a day are on the same playing field.

That's exactly the case. Katara was downright useless at the start of the series and her advancement is described as abnormally quick. And on top of that, nonbenders outnumber benders quite a bit, I don't know if a specific ratio was ever written out in canon but it's clear most people in the world are nonbenders just from watching the series.

Well you also have to consider that in combat, benders might not always be ideal with how much space they require to properly work their magic. A strong earth-bender might be better served transporting troops rather than on the front-lines. Not that a bender wouldn't be useful on the front-lines. Just that someone who spent their time training with a sword might be more useful than someone that spent their time training their bending abilities.
Also there are many things in everyday life that bending can't be used for. Earthbenders might make great construction workers, but fricking awful chefs.

I mean Aang's goal in most of ATLA is to learn the elements and even though he's a complete prodigy and the Avatar it still takes some serious effort even from him. Most of the people we see being really good at bending in the show are people that clearly have/are able to spent a lot of time practicing, that being soldiers, royalty or people who have been taught as part of their culture. Think of it like being able to sword-fight in medieval times-- some random farmer doesn't have the time to practice, even if he has aptitude.

Even the original series' technology got a bit out of hand by the end, but it was still fairly grounded compared to fricking forklifts, and all the shit in LoK

Forklifts were invented in 1917. LoK is heavily based off the 1920s, and takes inspiration from being set after the steampunk era's technological leap. A forklift in ATLA is the equivalent of someone using a smartphone in the 1950's

Not only that, but the forklifts are effectively a car with a tool attached, and it's kind of funny to think that they built that before making the basis for it.
It's like inventing the crossbow before inventing the longbow.

The arena fighter was also good, but terribly balanced (no shit it was a fricking flash game lmao)
It's just not a series that lends itself to gaming. You're either god of all things or some random literal who, and aang's story is pretty defined from start to finish, there's not a lot of room for extra stories, only after the main story, and the comics did their damndest to completely frick that up.

You telling me that the elemental combat system completely based on martial arts wouldn't translate well to a game? There are so many possibilities with just that, let alone the lore and cultures already developed by the show. This is one of the few shows that is begging to be made into a good vidya, which is exactly why people keep making these threads. Being a random who in a world where a random who with enough effort (and the right genetics) can learn to move the earth, create tsunamis, or fly seems like a pretty fricking interesting concept to me.

I'm saying that yes unless you're playing as the avatar it does not translate well, not to an action game, and most RPGs don't sell well, even for FAR more popular franchises (see: one piece odyssey)
And on the action game front, platinum did pretty much what I thought the best attempt could be, and it was mediocre at absolute best. Not even a platinum fanboy but I genuinely can't think of a way it could possibly be handled better.

She could only detect lies by noticing different heart rates with her vibration "sight" similar to a modern lie detector. Azula beat it easily by being calm and collected while lying. However, she can definitely see when you fap.

Most likely Toph cannot see you fap by earth vibration. I dont think jerking off person generates earth vibration that is strong and specific enough allow Toph to identify it from vibrations caused by doing anything else.

Well she can see you by reading earth vibration caused by your actions. Of course if you tremble or dance in specific way while you fapping.
When you fap, Toph most likely by reading earth vibration can get information that you are laying/standing/sitting and you move your hand in repeated movement, but it can be either fap or scratching head or anything else.

I find Legend of Korra practically unwatchable nowadays unless you want to laugh at how bad it is. The only thing it had going for it was good action, but action animation in general has improved a lot, fight scenes in Korra look so stiff in comparison. Even in ATLA, a lot of fights involved strategy and making use of the surrounding environment, while most LoK fights are just punching and elements essentially just being recolored laser beams.

      Anonymous

Yeah. For as hard as LoK gets jerked off for "duh action" it's pretty weak. Lot of the action in the first avatar wasn't as smoothly animated, but like you said, they used the environment and strategy, which makes sense.
In Korra, most fights degrade in DBZ fights where they just blast each other repeatedly. Also, I find it lame that they seem to move away from bending as a martial arts form in Korra. Instead you just have characters completely new to bending punch the air and make a supernova with firebending. Kind of trivializes bending as a whole, when in the original it was represented frequently as a skill you had to practice and learn

      Anonymous

      >while most LoK fights are just punching and elements essentially just being recolored laser beams.
It was extremely offputting seeing how everyone would just throw a punch and a straight line projectile of their corresponding element would come out. When someone was hit by an element, it didn't matter if they're hit by fire or earth, they just recover like it's a normal punch. The traits of the elements just disappeared in LoK.

IRL there were 66 years between the Wright brothers' flying machine and the moon landings. AtLA had blimps, tanks, submarines and a frickhuge mechanical drill.
I don't think the LOK tech gap is that farfetched; They could've had a space program and it would've tracked.

Lightning bending was extremely rare in TLA.
You had to be absolutely fricking cracked for it not to just flat out kill you.
Zuko couldn't even use it, he only learned how to redirect it.

Korra just powercreeped everything regardless of lore or logic.

        Anonymous

You needed to be cracked to even TRY that shit. If you weren't fearless, you'd choke and die. If you weren't supremely confident in your ability to do something you've never tried before, it'd literally blow up in your face. It's not something for the faint of heart to even attempt.

      Anonymous

Bending at least in AtLA was always shown to have a heavy emotional component to it. Aang couldn't Earthbend at all until he learned to think like a rock and face challenges head on. Zuko literally lost his ability to Firebend when he stopped being so angry all the time.
Iroh mentions that bending lightning is something that you can only do by being completely emotionally neutral. So if you're not a complete psychopath, it's impossible to be completely neutral about basically murdering a person. If you have even a little bit of sympathy for your victim the bending fricks up and kills you, instead.
Lightningbending used to be this really subtle way of showing how fricked up and evil Azula and Ozai were, and then LoK came along and fricked everything up.

        >bending lightning is something that you can only do by being completely emotionally neutral
If you've ever worked retail or any other shit job, it makes complete sense why those wagies could lightning bend with no trouble in LoK.
At some point your mind just becomes vacant and your actions automated.

I don't know why people keep bringing up Platinum
If you're going to do an Avatar game without completely bloating the budget into the stratosphere, it should be fashioned after a beat-em-up action title like the Yakuza games, something like Zero or Kiwami 1 with style swapping. Lots of potential for context-sensitive movesets rather than this obsession with making everything play like Dante in DMC4.
