Sonic movies are made with love

Mario movie is being made for money and compete with sonic
They didnt even have anything to show except the voice actors and that it is being made. So fricking pathetic.

Sonic games always came across as if they were barely holding together and would just about to break it anytime.

At best they look like somebody part way through a game development cloth at a community college made a fan game.

What has kept that franchise alive is the surrounding media. With consistently high quality television shows and comics and now multiple good movies where they actively listen to what their fan base wants and are willing to spend millions of dollars remaking scenes of their film when characters don't look like their audience wants them to.

I actually do recommend the Sonic boom cartoon. It is legitimately funny in a way that very few child's oriented media products can be. If you compare that to any of the non-video game media of Mario such as that atrocious movie all the dreadful cartoons from the 1980s there is no contest here.

Mario has no personality and has a bunch of side characters who have absolutely no personality. Can you even name a single thing actually said in a Mario game?

"Your princess is in another castle"
      "Here we go!"
      "Whoopopie!"

These games do not have plots or characters or anything aside from some pretty good gameplay and bright flashy colors. Why does anyone actually like Mario as a character? He can't even keep his own accent consistent. What is his character?

So what would you put in a Mario movie? Aside from the plot being the big Bowser guy is going to kidnap princess peach and Mario has to rescue him what are you actually going to put in that film?

Yeah, Mario is a good game, but there is a difference between gameplay and character development, and Mario's lack of character does not translate well to other media. Hell, he's a silent character in most of his games so we have no idea what his motivations or interests are other than "rescue peach".

That's true, and people widely criticized it when it didn't work because people care about the voice acting. Cartoon characters practically ARE their voices, as much as they are their designs and personalities, of course it's fricking important.

What aspect had even a slight amount of love put into these movies? It's crazy how people act like these movies subverted the tradition of game movies being trash. I guess I shouldn't expect Sonic fans to have standards, but still.

Mario will definitely be worse, but let's all quit pretending the Sonic movies were good.

      >Sonic movies are made with love
Purposefully leave Metal Sonic, Sonic’s best rival, out of the third movie because shadow is more profitable

        Anonymous

        >Metal Sonic, Sonic’s best rival
That's a tie for me. Metal Sonic and Fang are both great anti-Sonics in their own way. Metal Sonic is an evil doppelganger who's the opposite of what Sonic stands for as a person (life, freedom, nature, etc) yet Fang is a comedic exaggeration of all of Sonic's "edgy" traits, while inverting all of his good traits into their opposite form. Sonic is confident and smug, Fang is arrogant to the point of self-sabotage, Sonic is cool and dexterous, Fang is a goofy klutz, Sonic is selfless, Fang is completely self-centered, Sonic thinks fast and acts on the fly, Fang tries to be a cunning sneak, etc.
That being said, if they saved Shadow for 4 and made 3 about Metal (and Fang in a perfect world), that would have been the ultimate display of love and soul.

And all of that personality and range of emotion that made Mickey a funny and lovable cartoon character was gradually stripped away to make him as broadly appealing as possible. Which is happening to Mario now.

I think the "upending the tea table" thing is largely a myth
          [...]
Mickey goes through cycles of getting a personality and Disney pulling back, presently he has one because of the Paul Rudish cartoons but it took 15+ years for that to happen because Disney freaked out about pic related and somewhat about House of Mouse

The Disney renaissance ended up being great for Mickey, he was alright in the 90s and 00s. Having such a creative environment in a company did wonders for the mascot.

As far as I know, there was no vision for a Mario movie. What happened, Illumination approached Nintendo and said they want to make a Mario movie, or vice versa? I get the impression it was just "Hey, this property is popular! Hey, this studio is successful! If we work together we can make a sure hit!" with no thought put into what a good Mario movie would actually be like. So they're just floundering trying to make it work, which can't be fricking easy for a bunch of corporate goons, given the current state of Mario, who's only enjoyable 90% because of gameplay these day (back in the 90's and 00s, characters and the world were at least 50% of the charm without distracting from great gameplay).

If they got someone that actually understand cartoons, movies, and creating a creative environment to spearhead the project (like Genndy Tartakovsky or Tomm Moore), it would have been out by now and it would have been fun. It might not have been exactly what suits at Nintendo want, but it at least it would have been good, and fricking out by now.

Mario movie is probably pretty bad and they know they have to make something at least as good as the Sonic movies so it's taking way too long.
Also, Mario movie as a concept is just moronic. Sonic is much easier to make a movie about because of the way his character is. Mario is le funny bingle bongle italian plumber mascot. This works for video games. On the other hand Sonic has actual character, arcs, can speak etc. This is divisive and causes lots of mixed opinions on the games, but it also means that its easier to make a Sonic movie that actually feels faithful and justified compared to a Mario movie that run the risk of coming off as a low effort cash grab.

      >Also, Mario movie as a concept is just moronic.
Not necessarily, it's only moronic because you know it's going to have Minions type animation, writing, and "humor". And you know it's going to be constrained by Miyamoto's autistic, boring, repetitive "ARR MARIO MUST BE TOTARRY CONSISTENT AND SAME-U" NSMB bullshit.
In the right hands, a Mario movie could be pretty cool.
      >strange, surreal, dangerous fantasy land full of magic, mysticism, weird creatures, and monsters
      >said land is being explored by a pair of kooky Italian-American plumbers that wandered in by mistake and don't fit the atmosphere at all
      >Mario and Peach falling in love after meeting for the first time, showing that Mario has never had a woman as sweet and kind as Peach in his life, and Peach has never known a man that makes her laugh and smile so much, and can keep her safe from harm
      >things getting a little more fun and bright wherever the Mario goes because of his helpful, kind, funny, and strong nature
      >Bowser's daughter with the bow forces Luigi to impregnate her
There's so much cool shit you can do.

Nintendo is famously strict regarding their IP, and Illumination is famous for making sterile cute movies.

Every fricking frame of the Mario movie is going to go through so much committee planning it would put Disney's execs to shame.

I'm pretty sure none of these movies ever get past the producers pitch, i think studios just contact the copyright holders in one phonecall, ask if they are interested, and then drop it after generating some hype pieces from media outlets
I remenber in2008 to 2014 where EVERY game was going to have a movie
      >GoW movie
      >Shenmue movie
      >Sleeping Dogs movie (that somehow had a update in 2017)
      >Onimusha movie

Some get stuck in development hell. The production company and rights holders can't agree on a script, can't find directors/actors, can't agree on a budget, etc. When that happens it can take years if ever to get free of it. What you'll sometimes see are things like the Banana Splits movie, where a script gets repurposed when it fails to work for a liscenced property. The problem is you generally won't know on a lot of video game movies, unless the premise is unique enough to stand out. Metal Gear is a commando sneaking into a secure facility, Shenmue is a guy tracking down criminals for revenge, with attached love story, etc.

    >Mario movie is being done by Illumination
That's where it went so wrong. Illumination are money-first hacks who have never made even a passable film. They're literally all shit.

I'm pretty sure it was silently cancelled and now Nintendo is starting from scratch without the studio. I'm not saying that nintendo is the most hardworking company ever, far from it actually, but illumination is the "good enough" philosophy studio. None of the Illumination projects ever looked impressive on any aspect. People say "But the animation is good", but any person with basic understanding in 3D can see that all of their characters are designed to be easy to rig and they only oversaturate the colors so it distracts from the "meh" textures they have. Even movies like "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs " at least had a spastic type of quick stretch animation that makes it look impressive for 3D.

The issue is: In Japan the concept of "Good enough" is wildly different from a casual going Californian/french studio. They can and will trown curve balls like "finish this in less than a month" or "remake all of this, it's wrong". Japan is the nation that where almost every single project, from AA games to a simple VN can become development hell.I don't think Illumination ever had troubled development, the studio was founded around not having this. I actually imagine that most of the studio are middle aged mom's and dad's who don't think much of movies other than something silly for their kids bellow six. And then were stuck with Myiamoto, who is notoriously hard to work with, especially with foreign devs

Mario is Mickey, a character that Walt created because a cute little fella to outsmart bad guys that would make people sad when he is in danger, but without being able to use dialogue

Mickey goes through cycles of getting a personality and Disney pulling back, presently he has one because of the Paul Rudish cartoons but it took 15+ years for that to happen because Disney freaked out about pic related and somewhat about House of Mouse

        >I'm pretty sure it was silently cancelled
I doubt this, but goddamn it'd be hilarious if the major impetus for Nintendo going with Universal Studios for their parks was just casually chucked. Cucking Universal would also absolutely shit on Nintendo's recently declared intentions to expand their IPs with more non-game media, because studios talk, and word would spread among them if Nintendo were miserable sticklers and bridge-burners to work with.

This has already happened, Nintendo walked away from Netflix because they did guerilla marketing tactics about the Star Fox and Zelda series they were working on without telling Nintendo. It is absolutely a legitimate way to build hype but Nintendo was mad they weren't in control. Also man Nintendo's theme parks look kinda lame. How do you turn Mario Kart into an augmented reality ride on rails in the dark? What were they thinking?

            > It is absolutely a legitimate way to build hype but Nintendo was mad they weren't in control.
I think in the Netflix case Nintendo wanted an out and just happened to get an immaculate excuse to kill it. Ubisoft did the same thing with Mario + Rabbids, and the initial reaction was even that of mockery and horror, and that came out without a hiccup. Hell, it's the best selling Mario RPG and it has a sequel coming out.

This. And I wouldn't even say "pretty much", he has no personality. I don't even know if he has feelings other than happiness I guess. He comes across like a mindless robot.

the fact that out of all the franchises to break the video game movie curse, it was Sonic the Hedgehog after nearly a decade of being its own punchline in the video game world, and on top of it it was somehow one of the best decisions in Jim Carrey's career and potentially let him end it on an undisputable high note is never not funny to me.

  35. 2 years ago

Sonic can translate into other mediums easier because he has a defined character, Mario doesn't. Mario is more of a brand than a character. Mario is designed purely as a video game protagonist without much thought how'd he'd fare outside of that. Even the overalls and mustache was there to make parts of his body stand out more back when shit like Donkey Kong and the original Mario Bros were being made. Outside of maybe Paper Mario (idk never played them) Mario doesn't have any defined characteristics beyond being a mascot. A fricking Crash Bandicoot movie would be less of a hassle to make than a Mario one.

You know Hollywood is going to make this pairing a thing there, right?
