Exp. share shit is Pokemon trying to ot be Pokemon. Individual exp is core pokemon experience
The only problem with EXP share is that the games don't seem balanced around it, which does force you to swap teammates on the regular to not be way overleveled which is just another type of tedium. Other RPG's I've played do actually balance their game around team EXP share by either having the mechanics of the fight matter more than spamming your strongest move (P5), or by just expecting you to be at level cap (CSHM). Both of these games have other problems, namely that CSHM still falls into the "spam your strongest move" trap, but the EXP share isn't one of them.
The game is balanced around it, you’re just operating on the mistaken assumption that GF’s intention is for every gym leader to be a climactic showdown featuring an ace 5-8 levels higher than your highest party member. In all the games after XY you end on par with the champion fights
Why shouldn't a hurdle be a hurdle? A Gym Leader is meant to test your skills and understanding of the game. If the only real hurdle is the last one, the game doesn't feel balanced around EXP share.
If it was meant to do that, then it has failed to do that across 25 years. All Pokemon AI really tests is if you know type match ups and coverage.
