holy shit the number of shitty indie games produced due to unreal engine is fucking ridiculous
doesn't most of them are built on unity?
why does it always look like blurry bland shit, maybe ive played the wrong unity games

bait
UE3 was amazing. Shit since then.
Mfw the average UE2 game with less than 128 MB VRAM looks cleaner and more detailed than any UE5 game
>Kills 90% of proprietary engines
>*Has a near monopoly on high end games*
I hate it!
UE4 and UE5 are great and aren't resource heavy as some think. Exactly same base code is used for smartphone games, its only a matter of graphical features you want to enable in engine.
Also Nanite has a good chance to become the biggest revolution in gaming since open world design. It kinda does what Euclideon's Unlimited Detail Engine tried to do over a decade ago, but better.
But because you can use it for free (and then pay if your game sells) it's the default choice for anyone who can't develop their own engine, resulting in many mediocre games.
>it's the default choice for anyone who can't develop their own engine
Nobody develops their own engine anymore and it's not necessary to do it.
UE runs on consoles so it's easy to make a game and know that it will run on consoles. The real problem is that some devs don't know how to customise and add on to UE4/5 instead of using the preset features. Those games look and feel soulless because they don't have any custom work done to the engine to fit the game they made.
>TLDR; they don't make the engine fit the game, they make the game fit the engine.
>itt tech illiterate retards thinking engine determine the look/feel of the game
Name 1 unreal game without atleast slightly washed out colors(or saturated), smeary ambiant occlusions, and overall unclean / messy graphics compared to say, Half Life 2 or Hitman Blood money, or Dark Messiah of M&M. They don't make vibrant and clean games anymore.
Not washed out nor saturated. How about you saturate my nuts on your face you gay.
>Name 1
>doesn't name one.
So you can't. Good for you to admit it.
>They don't make vibrant and clean games anym-
There are a few FF7R have some pretty vibrant places and some very washout ones, blame the game devs for that, both unity, godot, unreal/whatever are capable. its the devs choice to make the colors vibrant or not, if they cant be bother to change the default settings, why is the tool to blame?
No it's not. I have never seen a modern unreal game where the global lightning didn't wash out the colors. It's literally not a choice. It's the fucking algorithms.
Fortnite
I know it's unfair due to it being on a highly modified version of UE3 but Arkham Knight
Because this sort of lightning works better in darker settings and in settings with artificial lightning (blue, white, green lights). Soit looks decent but its STILL washed out though. Look at Mass effect 1, looks alright most of the time but when you set foot on the beach level with natural sunlight everything starts to look like garbage. It's an exaggerated exmeple but like I said despite being bad, it gets away with it in dark settings with artificial lightning, natural settings really highlight how shit it is.
What other viable engines are there besides Unity and Unreal? I hate the feel of games made with either of them.
Unreal/Unity are both fine, it's just devs who afraid of touching render pipeline and non-capable of putting any artistic effort into looks of their game.
Name one game, see
If you know jack shit about game dev, keep your mouth shut Any engine is just a tool, a game "soul" is a reflection of its makers and modern game dev is as soulless as you can get, there is no love or passion naymore just "how can i make some money" and tools that give you most stuff ready are perfect for that pursuit.
Thankfully only american games use it.
