Exactly this. Britbongs are JUST waking up to not wanting to pay for SkyOne or whatever the hell they get taken out in taxes over there since they finally all got on streaming instead of watching DownSyndromeAbbey.
Here the data companies have a stranglehold. They lost landlines when it went all mobile but even that's jacked now. You can get an "unlimited" plan but only discounts on additional lines. There's no such thing truly as a family plan if you read the fine print.
There will be data caps eventually on everything or WORSE surge/overage pricing. It's an inevitability as they look to squeeze more profit out.
the cables are copper so they heat up when they're in use and that actually fixes any damage they've sustained
so if anything companies should be paying us to use the internet
>you think the cables maintain themselves?
You think the ISP maintains the cables either? Comcast has gotten billions of dollars in government subsidies in my state and was supposed to have replaced all the copper with fiber almost 5-10 years ago and haven't done shit. Yet the government money keeps rolling in and I still have a fucking data cap.
Bandwidth doesn't require upkeep or production you fucking moron, there is no reason to charge per gigabyte or have monthly datacap. Your bill is supposed to go to replacing destroyed lines during storms and new installs in the area and keep your servers and other hardware at the data center maintained and ready for future tech. Stop tying bandwidth to shit like electricity and water

Sending pulses of electricity through copper medium, or light through fiber doesn't cause erosion of the cables. Are you an actual retard or very elaborate shitposter because I can't tell anymore.

>Sending pulses of electricity through copper medium
Do you know what electricity is? It's literally sending waves of electrons through something, these will over time degenerate cables through erosion. >or light through fiber
contrary to popular belief light actually has mass, it's a small amount but enough of it can impact physical structures and cause eroision too. scientists even invented spaceships that use sails that move only on the power of light and can reach incredible speeds, just on light. you bet light can erode cables too especially if it's dense internet traffic, every single bit of information requires a 0 or 1 sent in light, gigabytes are millions of lightrays and there's even more than that for redundancy. it only adds up over time with a huge amount of traffic and it might only be cents but cables need to be replaced and maintained over time, and your internet has to pay for it.

correct, the anon that tried to disqualify my cable errosion argument tried to pull the "but atoms don't decay" argument as a means to counter it which I disproved, that disproval has nothing to do with cable errosion from internet traffic, it's completely irrelevant to the question but it is not me who brought it up, I'm merely explaining it to a retard who thinks it's relevant.

maintenence fees
yeah no shit asshole, once again it's your internet that gets charged here, not valve like the OP suggests
you do realize the point is that unity now charges devs per install? It's not about "charging valve via internet fees" you literal fucking dunning kruger monkey lol
They admitted they don't save user data to avoid having to offer privacy protection options. They unironically charge devs every time you install the game.
I don't understand how this is legal. Is this retroactive, like EVERY Unity game in circulation, or just newly developed games? If it's the former, devs can only avoid being charged is to just remove their game from all distribution platforms.
This is like if Toyota started charging car dealerships every time someone fills up their gas tank. It makes no sense.
>Is this retroactive, like EVERY Unity game in circulation, or just newly developed games?
Retroactive.
Yeah, I can't see this as being legal. All of a sudden they increase the pricing of something the client already spent tons of money developing and where they are locked in.
>Is this retroactive, like EVERY Unity game in circulation, or just newly developed games?
Retroactive.
Yeah, I can't see this as being legal. All of a sudden they increase the pricing of something the client already spent tons of money developing and where they are locked in.
It's NOT retroactive. Unity license is subscription based. Devs will not get charged for downloads before this comes into effect. Devs are free to simply cancel the subscription and stop distributing games using the software.
The difference is extremely noteworthy because it should serve you as a reminder to reject subscription license based services as a consumer.
>Devs are free to simply cancel the subscription and stop distributing games using the software.
Yeah "just stop selling the game you spent dozens of millions, bro".
Yes, that is literally why it's not illegal nor retroactive. You pay for what you get, and with a subcription based service, what you get and what you pay is subject to change.
Think twice before you engage in subscription based services
> Devs will not get charged for downloads before this comes into effect.
No. But your previous history now contribibutes towards what you owe Unity moving forward.
> Devs are free to simply cancel the subscription and stop distributing games using the software.
Cancelation of your subscrition doesn't nullify the new-EULA that apllies to your game currently being sold on Steam.
You want to take it off the marketplace and start all over again, that's on you. Good luck in rebuilding your userbase.
>> Devs are free to simply cancel the subscription and stop distributing games using the software. >Cancelation of your subscrition doesn't nullify the new-EULA that apllies to your game currently being sold on Steam.
NTA but you're retarded, he literally said "stop distributing"
>Yes it is.
No, go read the fucking unity statement. It's not retroactive. Nothing is being counted until January 2024 when the change goes into effect.
>No. But your previous history now contribibutes towards what you owe Unity moving forward.
No, it doesn't. The download counter begins counting on January 2024.
>Cancelation of your subscrition doesn't nullify the new-EULA that apllies to your game currently being sold on Steam.
Yes, when you stop the subscription to Unity, you lose the license to distribute software made on it. Surprising? Certainly not to me
>You want to take it off the marketplace and start all over again, that's on you. Good luck in rebuilding your userbase.
Yeah, it is on the dev. Good luck to him rebuilding his userbase. I never framed this as a good thing, I only clarified it's subscription garden gnomery.
>I don't understand how this is legal

Yes. Capitalism and communism are identical
Their materialist, utilitarian, cosmopolitan view of the world is identical
The way they view humans as being consumer-producer units is identical
Their international push to erase and replace unique peoples and cultures is identical
The disgusting demoralizing architecture they produce is identical
Their loyality to central banking systems is identical
The managerial, unprincipled, conniving character of their politicians is identical
The way they engineer people to serve economic theories rather than have the economy serve the people is identical
Their belief that the quality of society is determined by the -ism and intricacies of its systems rather than the stock of its people is identical
The way they funnel all wealth into the hands of a tiny few who have zero connection to the blood or soil of their subjects is identical
The way they empower the dregs of civilization while disempowering the people who made it possible is identical
The way their supporters cry "that wasn't real -ism!" when theory fails to reflect reality is identical
They have always teamed up against any other system that exists and supported eachother financially and militarily until all alternatives were erased
The only difference is the journey, where capitalism kills you slowly, and communism kills you openly, the beginning and end are the same

lobbying
its like corruption but is legal and in the open

We have this in Canada too, it costs extra to remove the cap. Our internet infrastructure is worse than 3rd world euro shitholes and companies are all mega garden gnomes. In my neighborhood the infrastructure is all old copper wire so theres a hardcap on the speed you can achieve and its underneath the road so the internet company is too cheap to replace it.
Let's humor this real fast. Among Us' minimum requirements are 250mb. That's 4 for 1 gigabyte. a terabyte 1,000 gigabytes. 1,000,000 megabytes. That's over 4000 among us installs IF you do a full installation... from just 1 person
Didn't they say it counts for old versions too? Can't really use a time machine for that, they're just pulling numbers out of their ass(umtions based on maybe a few games).
Yeah but what's keeping them from just pulling a number out of their ass? Unlike sales it's not something you as developer/publisher obtain first hand, and them being secretive about how the numbers are obtained means devs will certainly not get to audit the technology or implement it themselves or probably even have the telemetry data go through them first at least, basically what'll seemingly happen is one day Unity knocks on your door and says you owe them $50k and you just have to accept it.
That's the point.
They can pull a number out of their asses or the number that actually exist.
They can't stop them besides trying to sue them for the obvious shenenigans goings on.
I'd like them to explain to a judge why i own them 50 trillion dollar after i run a batch script spoofing their telemetry and sending 3000 data packages per second claiming there was an install
I know the exact case and it's not the judge that did that, it's the lawyers
the TL;DR is that the kid who kept hacking in bungie games claimed he can't be helped responsible since he's underage (then threatened to harm employees). So the bungie lawyers got red in the face, pointed out how technically each time he hacked the game he was "modifying" the software, which is illegal for a minor, and got him to pay copyright damages for "modifying" their software dozens of times which added up to 500k.
I'd argue the judge was the least tech savvy in the trial because it's obviously farfetched, but it's how it panned out.

And do you honestly think the judge understood anything said or just sided with the corpo because they had a lawyer able to run circles around whatever state appointed asshole the hacker had represent him?
you don't have to tell them that you're the one who ran the script, dumbass. just that you aren't responsible for the fines they're trying to impose on you that are ludicrously uncouth given the actual revenue that your game created. >ah yes this game that moved 200k worth of units owed 5 million in fines because it's just that popular of a game
fuck off, their policy is extortion.
>VPN are illegal in the land of the "Free" >calls Americans the retards
You may be right that we are retarded but you yourself have an extra chromosome.
Someone will reverse engineer the process within days so that you can spoof everything and run a bot on a raspberry pi and dialup. Multiple devs will scream on reddit or whatever about their $1m bill on their no-name indie game. Then unity will begrudgingly disable this and memory hole it.
Someone is gonna take one for the team. It wouldn't surprise me if some mega-autist dev creates several computers just to run 24/7 install/uninstall on an unlimited internet plan.
This assumes that verifying a games integrity and redownloading the missing files counts as an install. We don't know how exactly Unitys spyware determines if a game has been "installed" as opposed to just played again
Well no, but hasn't there been some bigger games that also use the unity engine?
I'm just scared because it might fuck over games I really enjoy like Bloons TD6.
There are various Microsoft owned games, like The Ori games, Wasteland 3, the last Doom port they made has a Unity wrapper or something like that.
This deal also applies to copies that are streamed, so the developer would have to pay for EACH copy that is installed on each of those servers.
Multiply that for Microsoft's Xcloud, Amazon Luna, Samsung game streaming service and PS Now.
Millions of servers.
No but Disney sure can and Marvel Snap runs on Unity. Major CEOs barely see a reason to pay their employees, you think they're not going to sic their dogs on Unity?
This is how rental properties work. They will up your lot rent constantly and you can either fuck off or deal with it. Fucking off in this case meaning they no longer sell their game or are forced to give it away for free with 0 mtx.
this isn't like rent. that's what buying unity pro is. what they are doing is calling you up and saying "hey you lived at one of our lots for 6 months 5 years ago and we calculated that you now owe us $30,000"
But now they will kick the hornet's nest of big game companies that have used the engine in the past, gachashit developers and companies that have made vidya but aren't necessarily vidya companies like Hasbro with MTG:Arena.
It'll be interesting to see if garden gnomes will backstab their own.
they are rich and gnomish so anything's legal
they could say that anyone who uses unity must give them their firstborn child and no one would be able to complain
whoever had the dev license for it. that counts for piracy too
obviously the game will not have hit the revenue threshold yet, but the moment they do they'll easily get dinged for millions of installs worth of fees
this is pure retardation and greed at a dangerous intersection
>"Just trust us with your data bro :)" >Uninstall, reinstall will count as a new install >You can get charged from demos >We totally have something to prevent pirated games from counting to the fee >It's based on install initialization >ALSO AFFECTS WEBGL AND STREAMED GAMES
Fucking hell, what the hell are you doing Unity?
>Q: What's going to stop us being charged for pirated copies of our games? >A: Aaaahhhh.... You know.... 😉
Holy shit, they can't even say outright that pirated copies won't be charged.
We can finally, LITERALLY, steal games and have the devs lose money on each install.
>pirate games
So what? I can just buy it on Steam, never actually play it and install and reinstall it, that is a legit copy, even if I need to start it, once I can automate the process even having to start an instance at every reinstall there are 7200 seconds in 2 hours, that's 1440 $, meaning that even at 60$ (that I would get back) I cost them 24 times the amount they made, oh wait that's 60$ minus the Steam's 30%.
You can buy a game on Steam, and you have 2 whole hours of playtime and 2 weeks of ownership where you can reinstall the game to your leisure and then refund it. So let's say you leave the game open for 1 whole minute after every reinstall, you can do 48 dollars of damage and then refund it, actual negative transaction for the devs, and that's only if you leave the game open for a whole minutes, you can just open it once and then keep reinstalling it ad nauseum for 2 weeks straight and get a refund before the refund window closes.
the company still gets your money even if you refund the game anon
do you think they are a mom/pop store where your purchase goes into a register? even if the money you spent there goes into a register, the company still fills what people call a cash-in/cash-out cycle. this means the register must start with "x" amount of dollars every day and end with "y" dollars every day. your refund is accounted for fiscally. why wouldn't it be planned for?
Because of the topic at hand which is unity charging a fee based on install and have straight out said that it counts reinstalls as a separate install you namefag.
so what you are saying is
if i make a game
and buy the game
and refund the game (i get money back because i refunded my own game)
ME , the creator , still get the money from my purchase?
GUYS WE HAVE A INFINITE MONEY FEATURE
Basically they are making it so that if you are using free unity you're gonna pay as soon as you become succesful.
They send you a bill saying pay $1k for premium membership or $10k for your install fee. Easy money.
>You're gonna pay as soon as you become succesful
That's been the model for both Unreal and Unity until now, you pay a fee after making enough money to be a more then successful indie dev. The real kicker is >We charge per download >BTW this is also retroactively applying to any game ever made in Unity
:^)
Gahca devs will sue, literally all of them run on Unity and Mihoyo is not gonna retroactively hand over 30 million dollars to burgersharts for Genshin alone
Gacha devs have literal money printers they won't give a fuck about paying a pittance for the license. Also >Per download AFTER 2024
It's only new downloads getting charged, but regardless gacha shit is profitable enough to not have to worry about the Unitycel tax.
Unfortunate too, killing gacha would have been based.
He's done more for DEI and progress then most people could dream of, cope harder. This is a way of funding initiatives to make the world a better place.
Imagine being a lawyer of a big corpo that depends on the unity right now.
The hype alone must be incredible
What law's have they broken? This was all in the TOS? You agree to use Unity... you follow their rules dumbass.
Ill give you the lowdown. >EA CEO leaves EA years back after ruining both it and several smaller game studios via absorbing them and killing their IPs >joins Unity >Becomes CEO of Unity because human predators bred in EA climb the corporate ladder like crackhead spidermonkeys >plan slowly made and set in motion >Unity joins with known malware dev, to see who has a unity devkit or game installed on PC >Unity waits for several successful games to be made using Unity for "free" >Unity merges with Ironsource ( |> ) >come 6 days ago, EA transplant CEO sells Unity stock and chair, cancels the "free" version of unity while instilling a 0.20$ per install dev-to Unity fee per game, shadow-shifts the Unity+ subscriptions to Unity Pro (~750$ to ~4500$ change), Unity says that this will be RETROACTIVELY enforced if game is still on "market" (being downloaded even illegally due to their inner call-to-home Unity games have thanks to that malware dev) >it will mostly affect Gachashit, mobileshit, poor quality H-Games and WEGs (thank god), the only decent indie and AA devs left in the industry, as well as any game on this list https://ultimatepopculture.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Unity_games
developers have to pay unity 20 cents each time a person installs and runs their game. there are no checks to see if it's the same person reinstalling and there are no checks to see if it's a pirated game or not. pirates can bankrupt entire companies by running botnets to install unity games over and over again.
Silksong bros it's actually fucking over this time
So I'm sure it's been asked already but...how is this legal? When using unity, previously you just bought the rights to it? Surely everyone who already purchased the software is not beholden to this change, right?
>When using unity, previously you just bought the rights to it?
No it's subscription based past a certain point. You can't own software, only the license to use and distro it, which can be revoked.
devs should have chosen UE instead and they wouldn't be in this trouble now

The old CEO of EA, you know, the one that permeated the industry with microtransations, bought and killed smaller companies, then was fired for being too fucking greedy even for EA.
He got hired as the CEO for unity, and sold his shares and chair six days prior to this.
So, why are devs being charged per install? What's the reason? I don't understand why such a retarded decision would be made? Am I missing something or is this just extremely gnomish for the sake of being gnomish?
Probably CEO and stakeholders shorted the stock and are preparing the company for a takeover. Which means they have to tank the value of the company as fast as possible >Lost jobs? Lost customers? Worsening the product?
Who cares they will earn millions in the process
It's a Runtime tracker. Why waste time installing/deleting/reinstalling when all you need to do is send a ping to the Unity server that the installation executible has been executed?
All they need is to recieve a positive booleen. Why waste time and damage to your hard drive? Just figure out their standardized expected responce value and send, "yes", "yes", "yes" over and over again.
either they are just genuinely retarded or the CEO is committing ritualistic PR suicide so he can drag the company down with him and get a big payout when he's inevitably forced to resign

The fuck are you even saying? Gacha games make more then enough money to worry about something like this, and sure as fuck not enough to become legally the same as slot machines
>Gacha games make more then enough money to worry about something like this,
Just like how billionaires make so much money they don't have to worry about how much they get taxed right?
Yeah thats my exact point. The more money you have the more it hurts when someone wants a percentage of it, which is exactly what Unity is doing to Genshin (although in a more abstract way than a revenue percentage)
This is more effective for games that are already cheap as shit, you'd have to do it more times on full price games for your purchase to register as a loss.
The losers are games on subscription services, which I assume either get a flat value from the service and/or additional revenue per install which means this new fee would eat into that.

They are very fucked, though.
There's also the less expensive gachas like FEH, Nikke, dicky archive and the such, they also are definitely very fucked good
I'm gonna be honest here, as much as I'd love to fuck over chud devs, this thing is gonna suck so hard. all the good indie games gonna be lost. so much lost money for early access games (I bought slime rancher 2 for example). so many games many were looking forward to will now be delayed or even not made anymore. this is just sad and I'm angry. no reason to laugh at all.
The biggest problem as I see it is that all Unity games are basically spyware now. I don't know if it was like that before, but they're 100% going to need something to check installations or some shit, so every Unity game, no matter if made by an indie, will be spying on your PC in one way or another.
developers have to pay unity 20 cents each time a person installs and runs their game. there are no checks to see if it's the same person reinstalling and there are no checks to see if it's a pirated game or not. pirates can bankrupt entire companies by running botnets to install unity games over and over again.
Is this going to bite unity in the ass long-term? this reads like killing the goose that lays golden eggs. New devs will move away from using it and any established companies are going to sue the piss out of them.
This change is probably because their old business model was already not financially feasible long term.
If you don't want to pay royalties you can actually just buy the license to the engine. This fee is basically just for the people who want to use the engine practically for free.
>If you don't want to pay royalties you can actually just buy the license to the engine.
That's the problem. I'd RATHER pay royalties, but that's not what's happening here. They're charging for something that does not generate me revenue.
I legit cannot believe this isn't a fucked up April Fool's joke, they're seriously doing this.
Why? They MUST understand that literally no developer is going to accept these terms, like, there are no proven safeguards, you are legitimately punished for updating, maintaining and/or putting your game on sale, CDkey sales now actively take money away from the developer instead of theoretically doing so.
Legit who can imagine anyone sticking to Unity? If the game is supposed to make money, why expose yourself to potentially infinite loss, you now have to ask Valve to remove your game files from their servers if you're on steam and guarantee no future downloads can be made for the charging to happen, effectively anyone can be charged infinitely per game made even if no one is actually playing it.
It's too dangerous for a publicity stunt, if they turn around and go "haha it was a joke!!" people will still jump ship, if they double down the ship will become a submarine overnight, I legit can't see any way this is accounted for, Unity made its name on being free, it didn't make its name on charging its developers infinite amounts of money that they literally aren't seeing back as a sale.
If it was a charge per SALE then sure, but its not, so what the actual fuck is going on?
>literally no developer is going to accept these terms
What else can they do? The games are already made, the devs already have the sunk cost of learning Unity. The devs have no leverage.
How does this even work if a dev decides to end of service a game but the software is still out there pinging Unity? >Um we don't want to support this game anymore, please take us off your billing
its a classic drop shit.
put out a massive pay hike and some insane bullshit.
then you say "we listened gamers!!!!!1!" and drop this obviously horrible pay structure.
They didnt even give any real details, just some shit charts. 100% its bait.
They'll roll it back, the unwashed masses cheer. then they realize they are paying an extra 2 grand per head.
people who arent actually paying are dropping support.
The core audience that they want will be forced to pay because of sunk time. they'll want to switch but in develop too much cost to switch. then new game time? fuck it, all my experience is in unity. Ill just keep making it there.
They'll lose some indie and hobbyists but the new ceo wants to drop them. its about moving up to charge the big studios, then offer (read force) more services onto devs to make up the difference.
>They'll roll it back >its a classic drop shit
Or they won't, and judging by the devs already dropping support and major backlash, I'd say the chances of them rolling this back are basically 0
devs and publishers are already pulling out. unity as a company is fucked, literally the only people who are going to continue supporting them are retards and students who don't know any better, devs that are already too deep into unity to pull out and change gears, and F2P games that make so much money that they can eat the cost and continue operations (but still will look at other engines in the future because fuck you for making OUR line go up less)
what actual devs/publishers are dropping?
indie devs need not apply, single or duo man studios dont fucking matter. if you can capture one 20 man studio, the pay hike can turn profit for almost 80 lost solo devs. its raw money.
Hearthstone isn't going to be remade. Genshin isn't going to be remade. every gatcha in existance will have to pay. long term will they lose money? sure, but shecklestein doesnt give a shit. hes only going to be here for 3-5 years.
Godot supports C#, so if you're on the programming side of things, you're not completely fucked and you just have to adapt to some differences between engines.
Even assets have to be changed, shit like animations not using the same default poses or orientation
and there's also a ton of assets created with in-engine tools like sets of animations linked together or procedural animations or FXs etc etc
It's just not a thing anyone does.
if you wrote in c#, you can save some code. changing to fit the engine obviously, but the core of both is similar enough its not all wasted.
wrote in anything else? youre fucked. at least your structure is mapped but even that will have to be reworked a bit.
Here's my prediction
They also moved up the subscription tiers so on average devs pay more for the license base. This is before any of the proposed per-install fees.
They're going to backpedal on the proposed per-install fees and everyones going to sigh in relief while paying the increased license fees without mucking up.
Very common in business to overask then backpedal to a lower offer that then seems reasonable in comparison. When in reality you're paying more either way.
What will you do when all the good indie games no longer exist and you have to choose between a furry freeware game and buggy, ugly triple A garbage like Starfield?
Good indie games will continue to exist because Unity isn't the only engine in the world you stupid doomer gay.
Additionally even if Unity WAS the only engine for indie devs to use, it wouldn't incur these additional fees below 200k revenue. If an indie dev is making a quarter million USD it's not going to financially ruin him to pay fees for the engine, even if it's garden gnome shit.
Same thing I do right now. Ignore all the low quality commie shit and play the AAA games like Starfield because they're actually good. I don't believe for a second you exclusively play indie games. Your retarded ass probably thinks Baldurs Gate 3 is a small indie production.
>Starfield >Garbage
I knew Ganker was retarded contrarians but jesus fucking christ
Bet you are gonna shill some souless earthbound clone in response kek
Most people shitting on it are just contrarian retards. This is Cyberpunk all over again. Ganker thinks just because a game doesn't receive universal claims of being perfect that means everyone hates it and it's a financial failure.
I'm not gonna say it's perfect but with mods? Shit's gonna last me another decade.
The only people that don't like it can't run it cause they are playing on shit machines
it's a good game that released around the time a couple of amazing games did. a victim of circumstance that makes it seem worse than it is. but the ship combat is seriously the easiest tgm of my life.
I am always right. My gut instinct to hate a game the second I saw the unity logo despite knowing nothing about it at all was dead on. I have honestly been blessed with perfect intuition.
With God as my witness, there are bots that scrape out Starfield mentions on Ganker to shit on them for having an opinion. Watch, if I say "Starfield is as bad as potato bread" I will get half a dozen replies from gays that think potato bread is bad.
do you really think they don't cache the downloads? you're not costing them a single cent, only your own internet gets charged.
>only your own internet gets charged
not in first world countries, ameritubby
just because you don't pay for bandwidth doesn't mean you internet doesn't pay for usage retard
REEEEEEEEEEEEEE
please, think of the billion dollar internet companies
holy gnomish loving mutt!
You wonder why Europe is broke anon? The taxpayer is footing the bill and they think its free.
Funny how they can never reconcile that.
At least our gov and companies are OPENLY fucking us, theirs are just railing them out while they are asleep.
>Ha! our government fucks us without lube
>Ha! Look at them being fucked over there!...Hey Ablie? Has your ass been hurting lately? What's with that?
That's just fucking pathetic anon
>We're getting fucked twice as hard but at least they use lube
Looking forward to buying cheap property in Europe.
It's an inevitability as they look to squeeze more profit out.
mutts thinking everyone has 4th world country internet lmao
>europoor reading comprehension
I said your internet gets charged not you get charged
I think you don't know how "internet" works.
>he thinks internet is free to operate
you think the cables maintain themselves?
I'm well aware how the infra and business side of "internet" works. I just said you don't have a goddamn clue.
the cables are copper so they heat up when they're in use and that actually fixes any damage they've sustained
so if anything companies should be paying us to use the internet
Criminally underrated post
>you think the cables maintain themselves?
Stop tying bandwidth to shit like electricity and water
let me introduce you to a little concept called "friction" and "erosion" and tell me again how internet traffic moving through cables has no upkeep costs
Neither have anything to do with traffic throughput nor bandwidth. Keep digging.
anon everything has friction and everything that causes friction causes erosion, internet traffic included.
Sending pulses of electricity through copper medium, or light through fiber doesn't cause erosion of the cables. Are you an actual retard or very elaborate shitposter because I can't tell anymore.
>Sending pulses of electricity through copper medium
Do you know what electricity is? It's literally sending waves of electrons through something, these will over time degenerate cables through erosion.
>or light through fiber
contrary to popular belief light actually has mass, it's a small amount but enough of it can impact physical structures and cause eroision too. scientists even invented spaceships that use sails that move only on the power of light and can reach incredible speeds, just on light. you bet light can erode cables too especially if it's dense internet traffic, every single bit of information requires a 0 or 1 sent in light, gigabytes are millions of lightrays and there's even more than that for redundancy. it only adds up over time with a huge amount of traffic and it might only be cents but cables need to be replaced and maintained over time, and your internet has to pay for it.
are you also concerned by the erosion caused by the electrons orbiting their atom cores?
how do you think radioactive decay works, retard?
oh right I forgot I have to replace all my usb cables each year because of the radioactive decay
retard, electrons erroding the atom is how radioactive decay is caused, it's nothing to do with cables or electricity. you have the memory of a goldfish you don't even remember the question you asked me. moron.
>calls others retard
>has the reading comprehension of a mentally disabled 3rd grader
every time
>electrons erroding the atom
holy mental retardation this dunning kruger underage soi thinks every atom in the world decays lmao
>thinks every atom in the world decays
eventually yes, look up heat death of universe
that has nothing to do with the topic of electricity going through the cable and nothing to do with radioactive decay either, you really are a literal mentally ill retard, get off the internet and consider suicide to save your parents from your retardation.
>that has nothing to do with the topic of electricity going through the cable
correct, the anon that tried to disqualify my cable errosion argument tried to pull the "but atoms don't decay" argument as a means to counter it which I disproved, that disproval has nothing to do with cable errosion from internet traffic, it's completely irrelevant to the question but it is not me who brought it up, I'm merely explaining it to a retard who thinks it's relevant.
>contrary to popular belief light actually has mass
Sort of. Photons should have a mass of 0 but we know they have energy and energy=mc2. It's a bit more complex but yes solar sails, lasers, and stuff.
They do though. There's a theory that even protons themselves might have an absurdly long half life.
He's farming for (You)'s don't even bother
What does "my internet gets charged" even mean? Are you a fucking retard?
https://twitter.com/stephentotilo/status/1701679721027633280
AHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Ipconfig flush dns
Successfully flushed the dns resolver cache
>i changed da ip address on my logged in steam account
doesn't matter either way, Unity is not allowed to save personal data meaning they can't save your IP, only that someone installed it
https://twitter.com/stephentotilo/status/1701679721027633280?t=3TMXc3YrDa6O50fkQC0KWw&s=19
>charged for internet
Did you not have unlimited?
t. Midwestfag
>Did you not have unlimited?
I have unlimited bandwidth, you are misquoting me. your internet gets charged not you.
Pity the coastfags
t.another Midwestfag
>only your own internet gets charged.
you know you pay the same amount no matter how much you use the internet?
this isnt the 90s where you have to pay per minute
yeah no shit asshole, once again it's your internet that gets charged here, not valve like the OP suggests
gets charged what?
maintenence fees
???
for the cables, read the thread we already went over it
you do realize the point is that unity now charges devs per install? It's not about "charging valve via internet fees" you literal fucking dunning kruger monkey lol
you know Xfinity, who owns around half the american home internet market, has caps, right?
I don't know because I don't live in third world country
>only your own internet gets charged.
They admitted they don't save user data to avoid having to offer privacy protection options. They unironically charge devs every time you install the game.
So you could just delete config/registry to the same effect, no?
I don't understand how this is legal. Is this retroactive, like EVERY Unity game in circulation, or just newly developed games? If it's the former, devs can only avoid being charged is to just remove their game from all distribution platforms.
This is like if Toyota started charging car dealerships every time someone fills up their gas tank. It makes no sense.
>Is this retroactive, like EVERY Unity game in circulation, or just newly developed games?
Retroactive.
Yeah, I can't see this as being legal. All of a sudden they increase the pricing of something the client already spent tons of money developing and where they are locked in.
>Devs are free to simply cancel the subscription and stop distributing games using the software.
its like real life
you can cancel the subscription and stop breathing at any time
>Devs are free to simply cancel the subscription and stop distributing games using the software.
Yeah "just stop selling the game you spent dozens of millions, bro".
Yes, that is literally why it's not illegal nor retroactive. You pay for what you get, and with a subcription based service, what you get and what you pay is subject to change.
Think twice before you engage in subscription based services
> It's NOT retroactive.
Yes it is.
It's probably not. But by the time the courts come to a decision the CEO will have long since bailed and collected their golden parachute while the smarter shareholders will have pumped and dumped.
>I don't understand how this is legal.
Laws exist for the middle class.
They do de-duping by IP address. BUT ONLY FOR WEB VERSIONS
>internet is not unlimited
>it is 2023
>your own internet gets charged
whats this? 1998?
FUCK OFF FROM THE PHONE LINE

Amerifats STILL pay for their internet?!
Yeah we do
Im starting to understand why everyone is calling amerika a third world shithole.
Yep, we are a first world superpower with third world infrastructure
AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HOLY FUCK NO WAY
Obama wanted to make it a Utility. Greedy telecommunications monopolies waited till Trump was in charge, and Trump reversed all of Obama's progress.
>he pays for bandwidth packages
i'd shit on you but i understand you may not have other options depending on your locale
>only your own internet gets charged.
>Damn I hope they don't realize a simple bot swapping between vpns circumvents this
>NOOO PLEASE
>AAAAA IM GOING TO STARVE SAVE ME moronMAN!

what's to stop someone from either creating a workaround or coming up with a way to flood their servers or otherwise fuck up their database?
>picrel
do amerimutts really?
>live in a third world country
>live literally in the middle of a snow tundra desert surrounded by swamps
>have to tolerate and live alongside literal slavshit gopniks
>every day stepping outside have to watch the ground not to step into piles of dog and human shit scattered around the street
>still have better internet than your average john
something went terribly wrong on your side and you should probably check what it is, anon
>snow tundra desert surrounded by swamps
dude pick a geography
>something went terribly wrong on your side and you should probably check what it is, anon
We know what ~~*it*~~ is.
Are data plans really still a thing in 2023?
Certainly are because they can charge an arm and a leg and it's a monopoly. Comcast tried this BS during the pandemic and then "delayed" it 2 years when people balked to state senators in the NE. No Google Fiber or FIOS here it's literally my only option or DSL.
my no name burger isp has no cap.
Isn't that shit built into your country taxes? What do you have Sky or Virgin?
i have a local american isp
>no cap
Fuck off zoomer
>no cap
Die zoomie
>no cap
Zoomer alert
You can archive things to local storage.
>data cap
Dios mio... es el ogro de las datas castradas... damn...
>Deleting the installer
Huh?
>data caps
only in america
Do Americans really? I live in a slav shithole and pay 15 monthly for my net and never had a data cap.
>data cap
Sucks to be you anon
please stop embarrassing us americans and just pay the extra for unlimited data please, thanks
>You?re
what
>Xfinity
I'm so sorry anon.
kek, I remember data caps, Americans still living in 2002.
its fucking wild how much NA shitposting i see on the internet when they literally have the infrastructure of 1976 Guatamala or Hawaii in large swathes of the country.
you would think they live in an air conditioned South Korean tech hub they way they spout shit against "Pablo" and "Rajesh" when they pay 90k a week for 0.3Mb and 120k/hr for basic healthcare plans jesus christ
Lel all this raging in an attempt to forget the shithole you hail from
which we both know you'll never mention, as is tradition with the REEE AMURICA fetishists
either disingenuous or retarded can't tell
every day I thank allah for not making me american
>data cap
>2023
>data cap
hello third-worlder
Cope harder, and make sure you give your ISP an extra tip too KEK
Third worlder here. I have to data cap
Muttoids, as the cattle they are , have to deal with such whims of lizardmen
Mexican here, the service is shit but data cap is not a thing here. How the fuck is this a thing in 2023.
in bongland unlimited data is pretty much standard for any internet package
why are americans so free with their rifles and grenade launchers and shit yet so cucked at the same time in everything else
Americans were made to be servants and golems, simple as.
It'd be funny if they didn't have nukes. Good for nothing country should be wiped off the face of the earth.
>t. Mohammad
Because the majority of our states are larger than your weepy little island. So there is more land to cover and more predatory companies that monopolize ISPs per region.
Lets just move past all the coping
>i live in a shit hole that is easily manipulated by corporations
Got it anon
Exactly and we're goddamn proud of it.
American ISPs enjoy a lack of competition, which means that they don't have to worry about improving their infrastructure.
Because American freedom just means the freedom for companies to fuck you over
You can avoid this if it works for pirated copies.
>he lives in a state whose governor didn't slap this shit down immediately
my condolences on your gnomish governor
>data caps like on phones
lmao do americans really
>Data cap
I don't get it. I live in a more 3rd world country next to
and even I have an internet without data caps.
How is it that the richest and most free country in the world is so behind?
Why doesn't the government at least try to wrestle and limit corpos? Didn't Teddy Roosevelt do that back in the day? Or is he hated these days?
My country is a commie hellhole according to Americans but we don't have such problems.
Because the gov have been bought and sold long ago and nobody cares
Huh?
How? That isn't how Capitalism works. Companies are supposed to compete with each other, not affect governing bodies.
How did this happen?
Lobbying anon, lobbying
Because we don't have capitalism, we have corporatism.
We have judaism.
>post-1910s capitalism
judaism
>bolshevism/communism
judaism
>international corporatism
judaism
communists were part of the people that fought against the big companies in the early 20th century. they contributed to a lot of labor rights getting passed and such. thats generally why corps have later lobbied so strongly against them
It's the same thing.
The only difference is the journey, where capitalism kills you slowly, and communism kills you openly, the beginning and end are the same
How did that happen?
Why did Americans choose Corporatism? What is the difference? Isn't the idea in Capitalism for people to get richer?
>Choose
We chose the same way the communist shitholes chose, those in charge decided and the people were either too distracted with other bullshit or too docile to care.
>Why did Americans choose Corporatism
That's the fun part, we didn't and we were never offered the choice.
What? Why aren't we doing anything about it? The fuck WOULD you do? The fuck CAN you do? And WHY would you do anything, you can get fat and live mostly comfortable with the status quo.
yes, but the moment someone establishes themselves as the wealthy class, they'll do absolutely everything in their power to keep things in their favor.
class elitism has never gone away, it's just that instead of the fabulously wealthy vs the peasants, there's a buffer of middle class who have life good enough but not too good enough that they think they're not being exploited, or are too tired to care or take arms about it
There isn't really a middle class anymore. It's just the poor, the slightly less poor, and then the rich as fuck motherfuckers.
The middle class is whittling away.
Have you been asleep since the 80s? It's been this way since longer than you were alive.
>That isn't how Capitalism works
Because it's not real capitalism and never was. Government manipulates the markets and companies lobby for excessive regulation to crush any potential upstarts when they can't buy them out outright. Meanwhile the banks get to allocate where funding goes according to their whims, which at the moment is (well, was I think) ESG bullshit.
>it's not real c...
i hear this somewhere, kek
you gonna fight for ethics in game development there lil buddy lmfao
i pirate everything so dont care
Any effort to overhaul antitrust laws is stifled by corporate lobbyists and bought out politicians.
That's literally how capitalism works. Unless there is significant government intervention, it will always go closer to a monopoly or duopoly over time.
lobbying
its like corruption but is legal and in the open
essentially corpos fund or bribe(pay them for advice, lectures, books deals etc)politicians who then when they retire go work as advisors and shit
>datacaps
absolute fucking state of that third world shit hole
To answer you all: yes, amerisharts really.
Do americans really?
just trust Unity bro
They can't openly admit that unity is spyware.
Didn't they say it counts for old versions too? Can't really use a time machine for that, they're just pulling numbers out of their ass(umtions based on maybe a few games).
They've had telemetry for over over a decade now.
So they just pull a number out of their ass and you have to accept it because you have no way to prove them wrong?
Well, yes, but also no.
They KNOW how many instances are installed on PCs due to their telemetry, which has been a part of Unity for a decade now.
They can't stop them besides trying to sue them for the obvious shenenigans goings on.
either making it up or spyware, neat
I'd like them to explain to a judge why i own them 50 trillion dollar after i run a batch script spoofing their telemetry and sending 3000 data packages per second claiming there was an install
try explaining that to a judge without sounding like you're being malicious
Try finding a judge who tech literate enough to actually care. It'll come down to whose lawyers are less retarded
a judge just perma banned a hacker for copyright infringement and forced him to pay 500k
if you're against garden gnomes, they will make sure to win
I know the exact case and it's not the judge that did that, it's the lawyers
the TL;DR is that the kid who kept hacking in bungie games claimed he can't be helped responsible since he's underage (then threatened to harm employees). So the bungie lawyers got red in the face, pointed out how technically each time he hacked the game he was "modifying" the software, which is illegal for a minor, and got him to pay copyright damages for "modifying" their software dozens of times which added up to 500k.
I'd argue the judge was the least tech savvy in the trial because it's obviously farfetched, but it's how it panned out.
How young was the kid?
Thats info I cna't find but I'd assume he wasn't an actual child since he did some fairly advanced stuff. Probably 14 at the very least
How would they get the money from him? Sell his organs?
They will garnish his wages for the rest of his life I assume
They know perfectly well he won't generate 500k USD in his lifetime probably so more or less they just doomed this kid to live his entire life with the minimum amount of money required to exist whereever he's located
To play devil avocado I'll defend the billion dollar company too: They did it because it sets a precedent so people dont do the shit he did
And do you honestly think the judge understood anything said or just sided with the corpo because they had a lawyer able to run circles around whatever state appointed asshole the hacker had represent him?
you don't have to tell them that you're the one who ran the script, dumbass. just that you aren't responsible for the fines they're trying to impose on you that are ludicrously uncouth given the actual revenue that your game created.
>ah yes this game that moved 200k worth of units owed 5 million in fines because it's just that popular of a game
fuck off, their policy is extortion.
>we can kill Genchink

Unity twitter confirmed reinstalls count so this does work.
STOP THE COUNT
Apparently for WebGL games just opening the page counts as an install in their FAQ, so just refreshing the page is a install baby
you idiots dont know how this works...
holy shit you're dumb all of you
you are throttling your bandwidth for nothing
lul
>you are throttling your bandwidth for nothing

>VPN are illegal in the land of the "Free"
But they're not...
>VPN are illegal in the land of the "Free"
>calls Americans the retards
You may be right that we are retarded but you yourself have an extra chromosome.
Someone will reverse engineer the process within days so that you can spoof everything and run a bot on a raspberry pi and dialup. Multiple devs will scream on reddit or whatever about their $1m bill on their no-name indie game. Then unity will begrudgingly disable this and memory hole it.
this, in theory all you'd have to do is figure out how to run the code that's phoning home, and run it multiple times.
mklink /J
nothing personel unity devs
The best part is that the only way to prevent people from easily spoofing it requires them to break GDPR laws kek
Gone home is a unity game
>Ruining your SSD to charge a dev you don't like a few hundred dollars
Where do you think you are?
do you live in 2011? you might want to stay there the future sucks
Someone is gonna take one for the team. It wouldn't surprise me if some mega-autist dev creates several computers just to run 24/7 install/uninstall on an unlimited internet plan.
Sacrifices must be made for the greater good.
>"Ruining your SSD"
>what is a ramdisk
what a retard
do not run this code

The bane of indie devs.
OH NO NO NO
Good job goy
can someone please explain this to me? sorry I have autism and dont know anythign about programing 🙁
Read the comments (lines that start with a #) and watch
.
This assumes that verifying a games integrity and redownloading the missing files counts as an install. We don't know how exactly Unitys spyware determines if a game has been "installed" as opposed to just played again
based
Oh god oh fuck oh god fuck, please tell me Reddit Souls runs in Unity
Fuck fuck please, I need to do my part to stop that shitty series.
it runs on havok
havok is a physics engine not a game engine retard
>it runs on havok
Fromsoft uses their own proprietary engine.
they use a completely propriety engine nicknamed "Dantelion" by the modding community.
starting january, but feel free to waste your time doing it now you weren't going to do anything better anyway
Lawyer anons, surely this can't be legal right?
probably but do you think indie solo dev #5463 is gonna be able to lawyer up against Unity?
Well no, but hasn't there been some bigger games that also use the unity engine?
I'm just scared because it might fuck over games I really enjoy like Bloons TD6.
Genshin is on it so thanks to Unity we should expect nukes from the CCP shortly
>Genshin is on it
Now it starts to make sense... fucking garden gnomes making me side with the chinks and their stupid gacha.
Genshin will just go "sue me I dare you"
There are various Microsoft owned games, like The Ori games, Wasteland 3, the last Doom port they made has a Unity wrapper or something like that.
Fucking off in this case meaning they no longer sell their game or are forced to give it away for free with 0 mtx.
this isn't like rent. that's what buying unity pro is. what they are doing is calling you up and saying "hey you lived at one of our lots for 6 months 5 years ago and we calculated that you now owe us $30,000"
The selling of stocks and CEO position beforehand is legal, everything else...well..
They're gonna get absolutely buttfucked applying this retroactively.
Nah, they are backed by blackrock among others.
But now they will kick the hornet's nest of big game companies that have used the engine in the past, gachashit developers and companies that have made vidya but aren't necessarily vidya companies like Hasbro with MTG:Arena.
It'll be interesting to see if garden gnomes will backstab their own.
>will backstab their own.
They do it all the time
>MTG Arena
>The game re-installs itself every time it updates already
This would only hurt the bottom line for hedge funds, likely why it will ultimately fail.
they are rich and gnomish so anything's legal
they could say that anyone who uses unity must give them their firstborn child and no one would be able to complain
companies like Mihoyo or Activision will never let this fly, they're going to get sued into the dirt if they don't go back on it
clickclickclick ORA ORA clickclickclick GET BANKRUPT clickclickclick
I warned you about proprietary software bro
if someone gets access to an unreleased unity game and leaks it online, does unity collect off that, and from who?
whoever had the dev license for it. that counts for piracy too
obviously the game will not have hit the revenue threshold yet, but the moment they do they'll easily get dinged for millions of installs worth of fees
this is pure retardation and greed at a dangerous intersection
remember that piracy meme where you hated company X and will pirate their game 1000000 times so it all results in lost sales?
LMAO
HAHAHAHAH
>"Just trust us with your data bro :)"
>Uninstall, reinstall will count as a new install
>You can get charged from demos
>We totally have something to prevent pirated games from counting to the fee
>It's based on install initialization
>ALSO AFFECTS WEBGL AND STREAMED GAMES
Fucking hell, what the hell are you doing Unity?
This is going to be a fucking bloodbath, holy shit.
Godot and Unreal devs are laughing now
>Godot Devs
Yeah because they aren't doing any actual work on their games OMEGALUL
Stop shilling your POS engine Juan
neither are the 99% of unity "devs" upset by this change. the other 1% are mildly succesful devs trying to get free publicity for their game over this
i just put a webm of my own thing
>Q: What's going to stop us being charged for pirated copies of our games?
>A: Aaaahhhh.... You know.... 😉
Holy shit, they can't even say outright that pirated copies won't be charged.
We can finally, LITERALLY, steal games and have the devs lose money on each install.
We finally memed this into reality lads
>pirate games
TOTAL UNITY DEATH
why would you waste the read/writes on your hdd for something so meaningless?
Just set up a Ramdisk
the company still gets your money even if you refund the game anon
do you think they are a mom/pop store where your purchase goes into a register? even if the money you spent there goes into a register, the company still fills what people call a cash-in/cash-out cycle. this means the register must start with "x" amount of dollars every day and end with "y" dollars every day. your refund is accounted for fiscally. why wouldn't it be planned for?
Because of the topic at hand which is unity charging a fee based on install and have straight out said that it counts reinstalls as a separate install you namefag.
Oh I couldn't tell at all, the OP suggested nothing of the sort.
>the toilet must start with "x" amount of shit every day and end with "y" sniffs every day
yes exactly
so what you are saying is
if i make a game
and buy the game
and refund the game (i get money back because i refunded my own game)
ME , the creator , still get the money from my purchase?
GUYS WE HAVE A INFINITE MONEY FEATURE
You can factor that into your sales projection, yes. Developers actually do this for AAA titles.
jej
Basically they are making it so that if you are using free unity you're gonna pay as soon as you become succesful.
They send you a bill saying pay $1k for premium membership or $10k for your install fee. Easy money.
>You're gonna pay as soon as you become succesful
That's been the model for both Unreal and Unity until now, you pay a fee after making enough money to be a more then successful indie dev. The real kicker is
>We charge per download
>BTW this is also retroactively applying to any game ever made in Unity
:^)
GODOT CHADS......
WE.
WON!
>Still no games
STILL WAITING FOR GODOT OMEGALUL
YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A HIT
Wasn't cruelty squad made in godot? I know, bad example since it is a shitpost game from the ground up, but still got a lot of attention.
It was a flop, try again retard. Seriously fucking BROTATO sold more then Shit Squad
>404k sales for a shitpost indie game
>Flop
I don't get modern shitposting.
Please excuse our Coastfags, most of America has unlimitted data and bandwidth.
Midwesterner here. I have data caps and my only options are Comcast or AT&T
I have unlimited and AT&T, be better.
Well duh, unlimited options exist but I'm not about to pay extra for it. Shouldn't be capped in the first place.
It isn't that much extra, though unless you're torrenting regularly you probably wouldn't hit the cap anyways.
Coastfag here, I haven't dealt with datacaps ever, but also I wouldn't touch comcast with a ten foot pole
>I wouldn't touch comcast
Smart move, they are leeches.
You will play nothing buy goyslop now, chud
Your indie shit will never reach top sellers on steam
Buy goyslop
Gahca devs will sue, literally all of them run on Unity and Mihoyo is not gonna retroactively hand over 30 million dollars to burgersharts for Genshin alone
Doesn't mattery to Mihoyo, they work with Unity China who is beholden to the CCP not the garden gnomes.
But again it isn't just them, Blue Archive and all the Girls Frontline games are Unity also.
Gacha devs have literal money printers they won't give a fuck about paying a pittance for the license. Also
>Per download AFTER 2024
It's only new downloads getting charged, but regardless gacha shit is profitable enough to not have to worry about the Unitycel tax.
Unfortunate too, killing gacha would have been based.
its in effect already?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
How much of an immoral asshole do you have to be to do what Unity's CEO is doing?
He's done more for DEI and progress then most people could dream of, cope harder. This is a way of funding initiatives to make the world a better place.
What law's have they broken? This was all in the TOS? You agree to use Unity... you follow their rules dumbass.
have a nice day
I'm amazed he's doing this without fear of some disgruntled employee doing him in.
That or a Chinese hitman.
My vote is on the hitman.
Unity is about to be sold, China is just gonna buy it, no need to kill mr garden gnomelstien when his next company will soon be Chinese as well.
two time EA CEO
Imagine being a lawyer of a big corpo that depends on the unity right now.
The hype alone must be incredible
Really interested to know if Ooblets was made in Unity
It does according to this post
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ooblets/comments/8gk5ss/engine/?rdt=45817
no one generates internet it cost them nothing to provide it to you paying by the gig is stupid
plapplapplapplapplap GO BANKRUPT
what the fuck are you schizos talking about
Ill give you the lowdown.
>EA CEO leaves EA years back after ruining both it and several smaller game studios via absorbing them and killing their IPs
>joins Unity
>Becomes CEO of Unity because human predators bred in EA climb the corporate ladder like crackhead spidermonkeys
>plan slowly made and set in motion
>Unity joins with known malware dev, to see who has a unity devkit or game installed on PC
>Unity waits for several successful games to be made using Unity for "free"
>Unity merges with Ironsource ( |> )
>come 6 days ago, EA transplant CEO sells Unity stock and chair, cancels the "free" version of unity while instilling a 0.20$ per install dev-to Unity fee per game, shadow-shifts the Unity+ subscriptions to Unity Pro (~750$ to ~4500$ change), Unity says that this will be RETROACTIVELY enforced if game is still on "market" (being downloaded even illegally due to their inner call-to-home Unity games have thanks to that malware dev)
>it will mostly affect Gachashit, mobileshit, poor quality H-Games and WEGs (thank god), the only decent indie and AA devs left in the industry, as well as any game on this list https://ultimatepopculture.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Unity_games
seems i should download DreadOut before the game disappears . its the only thing i wanted to play from there
Silksong bros it's actually fucking over this time
from /agdg/
Interesting, who is IronSource? Never heard of them. What country are they based in?
So I'm sure it's been asked already but...how is this legal? When using unity, previously you just bought the rights to it? Surely everyone who already purchased the software is not beholden to this change, right?
>Surely everyone who already purchased the software is not beholden to this change, right?
Oh fear thee not, anon...of course they are beholden to it.
>When using unity, previously you just bought the rights to it?
No it's subscription based past a certain point. You can't own software, only the license to use and distro it, which can be revoked.
devs should have chosen UE instead and they wouldn't be in this trouble now
Uncle Tim is incredibly odd. He's simultaneously a destructive force that will actively screw him and his company out of money by destroying ports and platform releases out of spite and then he'll randomly come out and do shit like this and fully mean it. Is it autism?
I'm retarded and need help understanding: the DEVELOPER is charged 20 cents every time some customer installs their game? How the fuck?
>devs spend two decades charging people in evermore ludicrous ways
>the pendulum swings back
>Download game
>Copy the data before installing
>Install
>Uninstall
>Put the copy in place
>Install
>Uninstall
>Put the copy in place
>*Uses up ur SSD's lifetime in a couple days*
Nothing personnel
Why does everyone seem to go towards proprietary technology rather than open source equivalents that can't do this to you?
It's the Industry Standard ©®™
It better not be anymore.
Do not underestimate the immovabilty of the normie mindset.
because open source doesn't get shilled nearly as much as proprietary and average retard doesn't look into anything and just goes with what's popular
Because the people running open source shit are arguably more retarded then the ones running proprietary shit. Have you seen the drama around Rust?
I have not. Could you share?
https://twitter.com/__phantomderp/status/1698561976010412241
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37378328
Not a day goes by without some dumb shit coming up around Rust. Just gays trying to farm clout, and that's excluding dumb chudshit
who came up with this fucking scheme? what manic thinks its sensible to charge anyone per install?
Unity wants money. Lots and lots of money.
>who came up with this fucking scheme?
The old CEO of EA, you know, the one that permeated the industry with microtransations, bought and killed smaller companies, then was fired for being too fucking greedy even for EA.
He got hired as the CEO for unity, and sold his shares and chair six days prior to this.
So, why are devs being charged per install? What's the reason? I don't understand why such a retarded decision would be made? Am I missing something or is this just extremely gnomish for the sake of being gnomish?
CEO (or more likely some of his friends) probably did a short on unity stock.
Probably CEO and stakeholders shorted the stock and are preparing the company for a takeover. Which means they have to tank the value of the company as fast as possible
>Lost jobs? Lost customers? Worsening the product?
Who cares they will earn millions in the process
>INSTALL
>DELETE
>INSTALL
>DELETE
No. You gays don't get it! It's even simpler.
Your better than this Ganker.
oh right, marvel snap uses unity engine. wonder how that's gonna work out for them
>Disney could now be getting involved with this
Damn, Unity just pissing off every chosen people hive.
this is the most retarded shit
no way they actually go through with it after the obvious massive backlash, right?
no it doesnt seem feasible on any level
either they are just genuinely retarded or the CEO is committing ritualistic PR suicide so he can drag the company down with him and get a big payout when he's inevitably forced to resign
DAY OF THE CRASH

This type of background is my thing now, lol
oh yes, here some compressed webm
Panzer dragoon vibes
Really refreshing traveling system
I think that's how they had Fly work in ORAS but yea it's still really cool.
Needs a way to precisely look 'down' or aim where you're jumping.
Do you teleport the player to the nearest 'safe' drop area or what?
If that's actually your game, keep it up champ, maybe you can end the "Godot has no games" meme for good
Looks good, anon.
reminds me of the first stage in hercules
looks nice
the style for the backgrounds is really cool looking
cool visuals however as unique the parallax is it makes zero sense, it's like your level is a barrel
I remember webm's of this from another thread awhile back. Is there still the dragon thing riding?
>yet another pixelshit sidescroller, this one with a chudime paint coat
yikes
what's wrong with pixel side scrollers?
they raped and killed my entire family
noita doesn't belong itt
the devs are extremely talented and autistically did so much complex shit with their game
I remember one of the noita devs also did baba is you. real autism required for this indeed
didn't he also do environmental station alpha? pretty talented overall I'd say.
he did. we have some real nice devs in finland. I still fondly remember the time playing bootleg worms (liero) in the classroom few decades ago
Liero was pretty fun
>Mess around with the options, and set reload speed so low it's instant
>Fire off a bunch of remote-controlled rockets, and get them spinning in a circle

Memories.
Why is it running in circles?
game inspired by world of warcraft
Respect for saying 'this is my game' and using the filename as a director
The devs who do this are based and welcomed in Ganker
Thank you anon

Don't worry anon, the fact that we are larger than most of their countries combined just confuses them.
Okay Ganker, which indie devs are we bankrupting when this policy goes into effect?
All of them.
everyone
wtf? do they just load the entire game into ram?
honestly? probably. way easier to develop a card game when every single card and therefore card effect is already pre-loaded (there are tons of effects can create any card, any effect or any monster at any time)
This is the same developer that can't expand an account's storage tabs because the game loads every player's entire inventory, storage included, into ram
wow I've literally never seen chuds used unironically until today that was fucking jarring
It's Chad + Stud right? Do they think they can rebrand it as a bad thing?
It's from some forgotten 80s movie
Really though it's from Something Awful.
>forgotten
The number of times I heard stuff referencing chuds in the 90s and 2000s, long before the current meme is far too high for it to be forgotten.
I thought it was just fourth channel shitposting lingo, do twittertards unironically use it?
Black women love Ganker and racist white boys. Someone needs to post the webm of the girl browsing through 4chan at a party.
People are saying Gambling games are exempt from this, but aren't gacha games trying to avoid being labeled as gambling? If they were to willingly accept the label of 'gambling' to avoid being raped by fees, could that not be used against them down the line?
The fuck are you even saying? Gacha games make more then enough money to worry about something like this, and sure as fuck not enough to become legally the same as slot machines
>Gacha games make more then enough money to worry about something like this,
Not if I have anything to say about it.
>Gacha games make more then enough money to worry about something like this,
Just like how billionaires make so much money they don't have to worry about how much they get taxed right?
>Billonaires
>Getting taxed
Lul
Yeah thats my exact point. The more money you have the more it hurts when someone wants a percentage of it, which is exactly what Unity is doing to Genshin (although in a more abstract way than a revenue percentage)
This is more effective for games that are already cheap as shit, you'd have to do it more times on full price games for your purchase to register as a loss.
The losers are games on subscription services, which I assume either get a flat value from the service and/or additional revenue per install which means this new fee would eat into that.
GAME OVER, LAZY DEVS!
GAME OVER!
Can anyone think of any other engine developer or platform that does this? That charges you PER INSTALL? Not sale, INSTALL.
>i have better internet than a farmer in the middle of nowhere, that means my country has better internet than america
Is this the new thirdie cope?
Cope harder literally every american in this thread bitched about their internet or went, "J-j-just pay the fee goyim!"
Ok then go edit wikipedia to be correct if it's wrong.

They are very fucked, though.
There's also the less expensive gachas like FEH, Nikke, dicky archive and the such, they also are definitely very fucked good
>Nintendo vs Unity lawsuit coming soon, fun times
Based
I'm gonna be honest here, as much as I'd love to fuck over chud devs, this thing is gonna suck so hard. all the good indie games gonna be lost. so much lost money for early access games (I bought slime rancher 2 for example). so many games many were looking forward to will now be delayed or even not made anymore. this is just sad and I'm angry. no reason to laugh at all.
RIP
>Cuphead
>Death's Door

and lots more. it's truly over
Katamari Damacy Reroll, both Pathfinder CRPGs, Bloons TD 6, Risk of Rain 2
YIIK BROS THEY'RE COMING FOR YIIK OH MY GOD
Shit there's two good games on that list! Great ones, even.
>Have Cuphead's physical version
Eat my shit, Unity.
Don't do it now it isn't effective until 2024 the beginning of next year
they don't start charging for it until 2024 but they are using the data model collecting data already now to determine installs a game gets.
>Now
Doc says over the last two years assuming I read it correctly, but hypothetically they've always had the data cuz lol telemetry
Yes, this might come as a surprised but "now" is included in "last two years" when it's 2024
I'm sad because there are a few upcoming games I'm excited for, like Waven, Dofus Unity, Silksong, Project Mugen etc 🙁
>proprietary engines
The biggest problem as I see it is that all Unity games are basically spyware now. I don't know if it was like that before, but they're 100% going to need something to check installations or some shit, so every Unity game, no matter if made by an indie, will be spying on your PC in one way or another.
It was always the case.
>I see it is that all Unity games are basically spyware now
>now
>now
People have been warning you about telemetry ever since windows 7/8 era popularized it
I for one, am looking forward to the Installocaust
Can someone tell me what this all means
developers have to pay unity 20 cents each time a person installs and runs their game. there are no checks to see if it's the same person reinstalling and there are no checks to see if it's a pirated game or not. pirates can bankrupt entire companies by running botnets to install unity games over and over again.
Is this going to bite unity in the ass long-term? this reads like killing the goose that lays golden eggs. New devs will move away from using it and any established companies are going to sue the piss out of them.
Yes, but it will make some suits VERY rich in the meantime
Doubtful, too many devs know only unity and will be too lazy to learn anything else. They've trapped them in the ecosystem and there is no escape.
>They're charging for something that does not generate me revenue.
Wrong.
Care to explain in detail how someone installing my game for the tenth time gets me a single cent
>patch game
>un*ty counts it as a reinstall
Exposure.
So they're just squeezing nobodies? Hmmm, guess it doesn't really matter much then.
Reminder that most Phone aps update by deleting the old app and installing the new app.
Hope you enjoy getting taxed over maintenance and new content.
>Um we don't want to support this game anymore, please take us off your billing
>so what the actual fuck is going on?
The CEO is a garden gnome
It's that simple
They always go too far with their greed
its a classic drop shit.
put out a massive pay hike and some insane bullshit.
then you say "we listened gamers!!!!!1!" and drop this obviously horrible pay structure.
They didnt even give any real details, just some shit charts. 100% its bait.
They'll roll it back, the unwashed masses cheer. then they realize they are paying an extra 2 grand per head.
People are already dropping support. Just mentioning this crap puts a huge "I will fuck you over" sign on their storefront.
people who arent actually paying are dropping support.
>They'll roll it back
>its a classic drop shit
Or they won't, and judging by the devs already dropping support and major backlash, I'd say the chances of them rolling this back are basically 0
devs and publishers are already pulling out. unity as a company is fucked, literally the only people who are going to continue supporting them are retards and students who don't know any better, devs that are already too deep into unity to pull out and change gears, and F2P games that make so much money that they can eat the cost and continue operations (but still will look at other engines in the future because fuck you for making OUR line go up less)
>devs and publishers are already pulling out.
we'll see. nothing happened with iron source
what actual devs/publishers are dropping?
indie devs need not apply, single or duo man studios dont fucking matter. if you can capture one 20 man studio, the pay hike can turn profit for almost 80 lost solo devs. its raw money.
Hearthstone isn't going to be remade. Genshin isn't going to be remade. every gatcha in existance will have to pay. long term will they lose money? sure, but shecklestein doesnt give a shit. hes only going to be here for 3-5 years.
How difficult is it to port your game from Unity to Godot? Asking for a friend haha...
Godot supports C#, so if you're on the programming side of things, you're not completely fucked and you just have to adapt to some differences between engines.
Porting games from one engine to another is not a thing, you have to rewrite everything.
Well you can keep assets of course but yes porting code isn't 1:1 and needs to basically be rewritten.
Your retarded ass probably thinks Baldurs Gate 3 is a small indie production.
>and play the AAA games like Starfield because they're actually good
Holy fucking shill lmfao
I don't just exclusively play indie games, I exclusively play indie METROIDVANIAS, MOTHERFUCKER
>Starfield
>Garbage
I knew Ganker was retarded contrarians but jesus fucking christ
Bet you are gonna shill some souless earthbound clone in response kek
It's getting shit on by everyone what fucking planet are you living on?
Most people shitting on it are just contrarian retards. This is Cyberpunk all over again. Ganker thinks just because a game doesn't receive universal claims of being perfect that means everyone hates it and it's a financial failure.
>everyone hates it and it's a financial failure.
Correct
Nah cyberpunk had a few things going for it while starfield is literally like any other bethesda game but worse
>Game has a slightly rough launch
>FLOP FLOP GAME WAS A FAILURE LOL LOL LOL
Contrarian are you OK?
the ship combat is fucking ass to be fair
I'm not gonna say it's perfect but with mods? Shit's gonna last me another decade.
The only people that don't like it can't run it cause they are playing on shit machines
Nexus won't allow mods that remove all the CITIZENS anon
it's a good game that released around the time a couple of amazing games did. a victim of circumstance that makes it seem worse than it is. but the ship combat is seriously the easiest tgm of my life.
Enjoy your weird looking buggy garbage then
He will along with millions of others. Enjoy your seething.
Seething about what, I don't have to buy or play it
You will seethe about its success because you're exactly the type of bitter retard to do such a thing.
200k peak players, much success
On steam, the game is free on gamepass so I would assume most people are playing it there
So they think the game is so good they're choosing to rent it rather than buy it for long term.
Go with the furry freeware, obviously.
Your masters decided you had too many entertainment choices. Time to scale those back.
I am always right. My gut instinct to hate a game the second I saw the unity logo despite knowing nothing about it at all was dead on. I have honestly been blessed with perfect intuition.
>Learn unreal for a year
>Decide to try unity
>Actually like it
>This shit happens
guess I'll go back to Unreal thanks.
should stick with unreal anyway squirt
i will personally kill genshin
With God as my witness, there are bots that scrape out Starfield mentions on Ganker to shit on them for having an opinion. Watch, if I say "Starfield is as bad as potato bread" I will get half a dozen replies from gays that think potato bread is bad.

Good news bros, it's only INITIAL downloads that get taxed! Demos and GamePass are safe!
