Mage wannabe here, what staff should I upgrade and use? I havent used any spells since getting Moonveil, this shit is annoying, they are all so weak and underwhelming so I just katanaing my way through the mage playthrough.

My second playthrough of this game was a mage/INT playthrough, and I still ended up using a Greatsword alongside my staff.
Any staff will do, honestly. If you're low level, you can grab the Meteorite Staff from Caelid for a powerful early-game weapon, but you can't upgrade it.
The Carian Sceptre is great but only when your INT is much higher. The basic glintstone spell is basically the best spell in the game for regular mage damage, as far as FP cost to damage ratio, speed of casting, efficiency, etc. Pretty sure raising DEX increases your cast speed as well, but I'd need to double check. Mage runs are more about mixing the various spells and buffs/effects you have together to pull off some ridiculous moves.

Spell is pretty shit. Cool for some YouTube clips, but useless in a full playthrough. Not to mention the fact you won’t even be able to use the spell for most of the run.

        morons, both.
Obviously you need the flask that lets you cast without spells draining your FP.
It's a fun spell, but makes the game rather dull.
Didn't even know you're supposed to chug some special flask on Mohg because I just toasted him with the beam before he could do anything.

This is the answer. Spells either suck or 1 shot bosses. Not fun either way. Incants are way more fun + rykard sword

Frost mage is the most fun way to play a pure INT build. You can summon a blizzard and it just looks cool.

Get the ambush shard spell and arrowreach talisman. Also grab the sacrifice axe as offhand for dungeon crawling. Pure int run is basically just sniping enemies with ambush shard and rock throw until you get comet azur. You can also do hybrid magic swordsman run, but might as well just do a normal str/dex run if you do that.

Spells like carian slicer, greatsword/grandeur are fun. I like to drop terra magica, cast greatblade phalanx. Hit enemy with charged up lorettas greatbow. then charge carian grandeur ash of war and hit them when they get close enough. pretty fun tbh

int isn't fun until the game is almost over or if you use weapon arts. FromSoft doesn't know how to make magic fun because they are always scared of making it too broken in pvp (which ends up happening anyways)

      >int isn't fun until the game is almost over
True for most things that aren't just swinging sticks, tbh. Too much fun shit in terms of spells, ashes, boss weapons, and upgrade mats to experiment with different weapons is locked behind 80% of the game.

If you soend half of the game using Glintstone Pebble that's on you

There’s exactly 3 INT spells that are located past the capital. Most INT stuff is found in Liurnia and Caelid. Good stuff being stuck at endgame was a DaS3 problem, Elden ring is so open you can make any build shine within 30 minutes of starting the game. Certain weapons or spells might be locked late game (again this isn’t a problem for INT since late game boss rewards are mostly Faith) but there’s always alternatives. No play style is gimped early game, unless your “play style” is wanting to use only one very specific thing.

As a mage you can just go get some or best spells that will carry you entire game without fighting anything.
        > Carian slicer comes from spell book in Limgrave
        > Rock Sling is in Caelid basement
        > Meteroite Staff (best staff until you can upgrade another to +15) is nearby Rock Sling
        > Night Comet requires some rooftop exploring in Sellia, again a 2 minute walk from previous 2 entries
        > Staff of Loss (boosts Night Sorcery by 30%) just for holding it, is in same place

Throughout Liurnia, the second area of game (but can just run there first if you want) you get Big Hammer Spell, Grenada Launcher Spell, Ultra Long Range Sniper Spell, Homing projectile swarm that nearly unavoidable, Crystal shotgun, +35% Magic damage buff spell.

Of all the complaints about Elden Ring, yours is the stupidest, and I suspect you barely know anything about the game.

          >past the capital
So like 2/3rds through the game, with only its worst and least polished bits still to come?

            Anonymous

Tell me. What spells do you want but decided you couldn’t because they were “too far into the game”. Because it’s only these
            > Lorreta’s Mastery (cool, but worse than normal Lorreta’s Spell because a few arrows will always hit the floor meaning it’s just more expensive for little benifit)
            > Meteirite of Astel, 55 INT ultimate boss nuking spell, you can get mini version in Liurnia
            > Zamor Ice Storm, pretty cool, but nothing too special
I forgot there was a few more
            > Founding Rain of Stars, it looks really cool, but it sucks. When balancing it I think devs forgot how defense calculations work. Lots of small hits get neutered by flat defense, if on spell does 1000 damage and another hits 10 times for 100 each hit, the first spell will do about 900 damage, the second will do about 500, maybe less
            > Explosive Ghost Flame, requires 30 fricking Faith as well as 45 INT, and it’s not even good, even after the buffs
            > Briars of Punishment, not an INT spell since it only requires 24 Faith, like Ghost Flame no INT build is wanting this earlier. But it does suck for people who want to use Thorn spells, since there’s only 2 and the other one is garbage.

That’s it, every other sorcery can be grabbed at any time. There’s none even in the capital, so two shardbearer requirement isn’t an issue, you can do first 2/3s of game in any order and grab whatever spells you like.

get the wizard hat with the blindfolded stone mask from the dude standing across the bridge that goes across the death forest on altus plateau, and then the charms that increase str and int from wherever you get those, then go greatsword glinstone path, you can get to super high magic and use a giant sword and become a huge armoured warrior wizard with the use of the right flask combos, and I went that path from prophet and still havn't finished the game at like level 170 or something, but I'm about to get to the haligtree and there's still so much shit I gotta check out

The only spell/miracle that's even slightly close to that description is Elden Stars.

Magic in ER is nearly 50% to 70% stronger across the board in ER compared to DS3 where you had to stack 2 rings and the dusk crown to even think about going into lategame as a pure mage with just a dagger for finishing off 1% HP enemies.

Only use summoned weapons as spells, no pew pew shit, no rock sling spam.

I made a "Pthumerian Elder" cosplay RL50 invader character based on a cool chalice boss from BB that summons tons of weapons from his staff.
Only real change was adding a dagger for ripostes.

ive been trying to get into souls games for the last couple of days but for some reason they dont click on me, even tho i really like rpgs i got bored of dark souls after playing around 10 or 12 hours. not a from hater, i really enjoyed sekiro but i wanna try something like a magical warrior, is this viable on ER? it would be fun to play? or it would be slow and tedious like dark souls?

DS is only tedious in the early games because of how stuff like hyperarmor and poise works and how you get stunlocked if you go light.
DS3 and ER are far faster and more responsive with any build.

You can go full Havel and just fatroll + block + guard counter most of the game and only the very endgame will give you problems.
I even did Radahn at SL50 by just strafing, blocking and occasionally fatrolling.

What do I level early game for this? Health, Stamina, and Strength?

          Anonymous

Yep, 30 STR+VIG and 20 END then just add to it from there, don't mind of you're fatrolling, it's only a nightmare in 3v1 invasions.

15 FTH is also recomended for things like beast regen the 4 elemental resistance spells is also very usefull as you can put on whatever resistance you need for a boss/area and tank hits no problem.
Also fire cleanse me for getting rid of rot and poison easily.

Embracing the fat roll will give me more options for gear. Guess I just gotta look up item locations then. Banished armor good?

Yeah, Banished Armor + Manor GS from Stormeil + Barricade shield ash of war from Weeping Peninsula are some of the best early tanking gear.

You can use the large club from Limgrave as your main STR weapon and maybe the pike as a secondary STR weapon as you can attack with it while blocking.
Also the stamina regen talisman or physick are essential as going fat gives stamina regen a 20% penalty.

Oh yeah, that's a good one to start the build.
Though I'd probably also experiment with something that has more reach if you're fat and slow like say the Giant Golem Halberd or the Longshaft Axe if you're ok with farming later.

Jumping is only really useful for ground based earthquake attacks like Godrick's jackhammer, Godfrey's stomps, Crucible Knight stumps, Avatar buttslams etc.

But while jumping doesn't have iframes, it does disable the hitboxes from your chest downward till you land, so you can jump a bunch of horizontal slashes from enemies and bosses if you time them well.

      Pokemon Run:
-You can only use summoned spirits.
-Only exception is Radahn where you can use the npc summon.
-You can buff them and upgrade them.
-Each time you beat a boss with a spirit you can no longer use it again (this makes the run far more fun instead of abusing the Rot dog, Crystalian or Mimic for 90% of the run)

      FP was a mistake.

Bullshit, Comet Shard can be charged up and does 30% more damage per shot while costing the same FP.
It's the Great Soul Arrow of the game capable doing the most FP/damage of any spell as long as you back away and charge your shots.

How's faith? My first run was DEX/INT with Moonveil and spells. I was going to a paladin style run next, big tanky boy with miracles. Probably the dragon ones more than the rest.
