Whenever I feel bad about being an out of shape twig armed loser, I enter a Deck thread and find at least one person complaining about the Deck being too heavy and feel better about myself.

I got one this week and I love it, have been using it for that exact thing. I also use it to play vidya on the sofa. Unexpectedly, I was using it to play Mario Kart with my fianceé there today, with her using a DS4. Was super easy to get everything set up for it.
Also, I spent all day tweaking a 2003 PC game to work on it - got it all set up with mods and working perfectly. That was quite fun in itself, and now the community layout makes controlling the game work really well too.

They're all people who don't own one and have never handled one. Even

says "probably". I was instantly struck by how light it is and how easy it is to handle. One of my friends was complaining that it makes it feel "cheap".

Literally bought it for that reason. Yes. Also a good break from sitting in front of a computer all day.

You're an unironical homosexual. I don't even exercise nowadays and it's not that uncomfortable unless you hold it on top of your face like a phone.

This. And gayben personally came to my house, ate his entire beard in front of us, beat my dog to death with the deck and sued my family for 400 million dollars. The man is a monster.

It was last year, I played a lot of Elden ring on it. Not anymore. Just take a look. The new Nioh game doesn't work on the deck.
None of the new games work on it. The hardware got powercreeped quick.
    Just save your money.

Is this what people expected though? Nobody bought a Steam Deck thinking "well, I'm going to buy this just to play all the last gen games out there and emulate. Definitely not to play any new current gen games". That's what the Switch is. Steam Deck is leagues above the Switch in terms of power so why should people expect more from it?

          >Nobody bought a Steam Deck thinking "well, I'm going to buy this just to play all the last gen games out there and emulate. Definitely not to play any new current gen games".
That's literally exactly what I did. So far I've played Tomb Raider 2 and Deus Ex: Invisible War, and set it up so that I can emulate all my PS2 games.

          >"well, I'm going to buy this just to play all the last gen games out there and emulate. Definitely not to play any new current gen games"
Correct. Why would I play modern current games on a 800p screen. I have a 4K TV and 3080 for that. It's been great for Rain World Downpour.

The switch struggles to play ps3 games and couldn‘t even emulate N64 properly without overclocking until nintendo made an official emulator.

Can someone explain the shader cache thing to me? Why does it need to continually download this shit almost every time I boot up? My country boy internet can't handle this nonsense. Is there a way to disable it?

      Anonymous

I think GE-Proton doesn't use downloaded shaders. It introduces stutters probably though, unsure which's better

IIRC Valve maintains pre-compiled shader caches for games so they don't need to be compiled on the fly which introduces stutter. Got no idea why Vulkan is like that, I'm just a dumb normalgay who never heard of shader compilation and the need for caching while DirectX and OpenGL were what every game used for 3D rendering.

got one recently and only play it in bed, nice to be able to play a game on PC and then just hop into bed and continue from where you left off - also i'm a moron who can't focus on old games on the PC, playing them on the deck feels more natural so I've logged multiple hours in games I otherwise wouldn't have played.

That is the best purpose for it. Moonlight works great if you manage to fine something that doesn't actually work. I have some pretty obscure eroge that doesn't work well, but streaming them works just fine.

You can make custom one handed controls for any game, it's great.
