Pokemon fans don't play anything else so they lack any frame of reference.
It’s amazing how old videogames had soundtracks almost if not entirely comprised of bangers, especially when compared to newer ones even in the same franchises and by the same companies in which the good tracks can be counted on one hand, what the fuck happened?
Older game soundtracks had more focus on melody and being catchy while modern soundtracks focus more on atmosphere which is kind of funny considering they're less atmospheric than older soundtracks in many ways. There's also the possibility that a lot of composers use up their best ideas early in their careers and then stagnate or get worse as thenyears go on because they have no reason to push themselves or take their music more seriously because it's just a paycheck to them after a certain point.

i think the answer is ironically, soul. i think people used to put their heart and soul into what the made. people still do of course, but it isnt as common.
I think the sort of people who grew up in the 60s 70s and 80s were also different from a creative standpoint than people who grew up in the 90s 2000s etc. but i havent really put enough thought into that side of it.
I don't know much about nip composers, but what bothers me greatly, my 3 favourite American composers that made many great OSTs are all either cancelled/blacklisted/fired. I don't understand why, all 3 deliver nothing but kino, they meet their deadlines and so on so why? And worse their replacements make boring forgettable OSTs.
TotK is on a similar tier to BotW and the soundtrack in that game was a total bore, the fact that they had to sneak in a segment of the Dragon Roost island theme in the Colgera battle to manage to get something out of the player is rather telling
chiptune tracks had a "voice", something that you could hum along to, because they weren't able to have orchestral arrangements. even looking at something else from that era as an example, even though spyro the dragon has a great OST, almost none of the tracks have something you can hum along with, so none of them are as individually memorable.
like if the video didn't say the name of this level, you'd probably have no idea what level it was from.
meanwhile you can hum along to this because it has a main voice and it fits the theme of its level well enough to make it memorable
For me with Spyro 1 the music issue is made worse because the levels in each home world all kind of blend together in my mind.
2 and 3 don't have this problem at all and it helps the tracks stand out more
Yeah, the first five gens had pretty memorable music, but with gen 6 onwards the OSTs essentially became white noise, like, I still remember the first time I heard the XY gym leader battle expecting something hype like the average important character battle in the previous games and being like “what the fuck is this shit? It’s so fucking boring!”
Gen 4 music is mostly good, sure, there are some boring tracks here and there like the gym leader theme, but it’s not like the gen 2 and gen 3 gym leader themes were much better, but overall it’s pretty consistent. Gen 5 still has some of that classic pokemon feel in its soundtrack but I feel like the average gen 4 track is better than stuff like the driftveil city or Alder battle theme
>had my headphones turned up really loud from what i was listening to last
>open this video
you're welcome 🙂
my fucking eardrums
my fucking sides
they're gone
>Pokemon OST
>good

man this game really felt magical as a kid. i still remember reading anything i could find in print about this game coming out. (game magazines)
this was the first game I ever learned about before launch and actually started looking up information on the internet
SOVL
man this one always gets an emotional reaction from me i have no idea why
>I will never hear this for the first time again
what was it with these guys that they felt the need to put so many inexplicably somber songs into this game?

You play the wrong games
Post a single old franchise where the newest game soundtracks are as good as the early games

Limitations of the earlier hardware bred creativity.
How many prominent composers do we have in vidya now?
back then there were no indentured industry hacks flooding the marketplace, so they actually had to hire real professionals

I presume one of those is Jeremy Soule, and besides Marty (what was his surname again?) what’s the other one?
>what the fuck happened?
you don't play games
bro clearly hasn't played Persona 5, Nier Automata or Tears of the Kingdom

I've been noticing a lot of pokemon threads this week.
its because i started playing through the games and whatever games i play suddenly start getting threads on Ganker
sorry bro i have no control over this
I assumed it was just because dlc came out for the new one or something. I havent played pokemon since the first 1 on the DS.
remakes are so much better
Nah, they were gay as fuck and destroyed the OST
8bit sounds like shit in comparison
HGSS Ecruteak and Goldenrod are so much worse it isn’t even funny
>better
ftfy
Been meaning to replay this, pick a starter and some stipulations for me anons.
play one of the many romhacks if you want to experience gen 2 but differently
unironically not even a top 500 soundtrack or close to top of the series. play more games.
Stadium 2 remixes were far better
>the worst games on the series have the best OST
everytime
For me it's Dark Cave, the original version, not the HGSS version which is sadly inferior.
Pokemon music is getting worse and worse since the 3DS games
proof?

gen 2, 3, and 5 had excellent OSTs, don't know what the fuck happened in gen 4

battle themes are decent in gen 4, it's the area themes that flounder
not a single town in gen 4 comes close to driftveil
That's megaman x

I agree
