Is Dead Or Alive the most underrated fighting game series? It usually gets shit on by tourney scrotes but the fighting is quite solid (if being a bit held down by xbox controllers for 3 and 4)

    • I’m sorry you’re bad at fighting games, but don’t ask people why your favorite one is bad if you don’t want actual answers. again, join a fan forum if you just want to circlejerk.

        • We’re talking about the original xbox right? Those just use PC parts of the time. There are three different types of drives you can get, they weren’t exclusive to the xbox at all

          • not the same anon but yeah, in theory the OG xbox is just a regular PC but their disc drives are very specific and i think they spin backwards or some shit. You can’t replace them pretty much.

          • Yeah those three drives are the ones exclusively used in xboxes you idiot. There is nothing you can do but get a doner xbox if your drive dies

  1. After VF and Bloody Roar for me it’s one of the best 3D Fighter out there, i find it a lot more fun than Tekken. But i’m not a tourney chud.

some weird opinions in the thread
doa 2-4 always had people playing competitively but compared to other fighting games counter holds are extremely frustrating.

counter holds change neutral entirely and cover every move. the best move for the range and frame data ends up at times being the wrong one because you need to change your offense somewhat randomly to beat the system.

counter holds also effect combos. counter hold damage is terrifyingly equal to normal combos and throws if you time it perfectly (webm related).
larger combos are from stagger situations where your damage isn’t guaranteed because the opponent is allowed to counter hold out of stagger.
guessing out of stagger isn’t a complete guess either. majority of moves are hit medium and very few characters have a low that leads to damage.

in a tournament setting this lead to players mainly aiming for launcher combos, as stray hits and stagger combos don’t really equal the risk versus reward.
that said I really love this series though, and the games were impressive visually and early system sellers imo.
dead or alive 2 rollback is coming soon

  5. i love the series but fuck counter holds. i’ve been tempted to hex edit movesets and remove counter holds from stagger.

fairly big doa 2 beta news. they found a cut indian belly dancer girl in an early dreamcast build.
you’d think she’d be a npc for leon story but she actually has a dancer moveset and they repurposed several moves for brad wong.

      • okay let’s go through this. you get a hit and want to pressure. let’s say you go high
        >they high hold, you get counter held and take damage
        >mid hold, your move becomes counter hit
        >low hold, same as mid
        >you throw, it’s a counter hit throw
        >you wait, they whiff hold and you can continue pressure
it’s not rock paper scissors. it’s overwhelmingly a bad idea to guess hold.
if you’re constantly getting held it’s because you’re predictable and they deserve the reward

        Reply
      • Because the counter system is a shit mechanic.
The system itself is always more risk than reward and never actually worth using in 99% of cases, but obviously it will be used as a switch up, meaning that every engagement in the game comes down to "welp hope he doesn’t guess right." meaning every match is based entirely on random guesses instead of reads or technique like every other game. Add in the extremely barebones gameplay mechanics of the game that haven’t evolved much at all from the second game all the way back in goddamn 1999, the ridiculous stage hazards that randomly turn 25% combos into 75% ones, and the overall lack of polish to anything in the game except the girls tits and it becomes very apparent why no one actually gives a shit about the series.

          • Literal guessing is not a part of playing fighting games, and if you honestly think it is theres a reason why you’ve never been good at any of them.

            >every engagement in the game comes down to "welp hope he doesn’t guess right."
once you start a juggle they can’t hold out
            >every match is based entirely on random guesses instead of reads or technique like every other game
any time you attack a ryu, there’s a chance that he did shoryuken, and shoryuken beats everything. high, low, throw, walking forward, doesn’t matter. he goes straight through it. if you think invincible moves are good design but you can’t stand your opponent having a 1/4 chance of breaking out then you don’t understand video games
            >ridiculous stage hazards that randomly turn 25% combos into 75% ones
            lmao
I STOOD NEXT TO THE EDGE OF THIS CLIFF AND RANDOMLY GOT KICKED OFF. FUCKING RNG GAMEPLAY

            >once you start a juggle they can’t hold out
you can’t start a juggle if he guesses right, and as soon as your juggle ends, you’re back to hoping he doesn’t guess right. The entire gameplay of the DoA series is based on hoping someone doesn’t guess right.
            >any time you attack a ryu, there’s a chance that he did shoryuken,
You can bait DP, you can read and estimate situations where someone is more likely to DP because SF has actual gameplay mechanics, you can’t combo off of DPs like you can with the counters in DoA, and every single character in the game doesn’t have a DP that they can use at literally any second they aren’t in a the middle of a combo. and in almost every situation a DP will just reset to neutral.
            >I STOOD NEXT TO THE EDGE OF THIS CLIFF AND RANDOMLY GOT KICKED OFF. FUCKING RNG GAMEPLAY
Yes, the exact same combo doing an extra 50% damage for no reason other than where the characters were standing is fucking stupid. It was a shitty implemented job of carrying over corner combos into the 3D space, ignoring that corner combos have differnt links, different execution timings and different setups to them. Instead DoA just shits the damage out because they know the people who play it are too distracted by the giant bouncing tits to actually care about good fighting game gameplay mechanics.
I can already tell that neither of you have any experience actually playing fighting games past single player or on the couch with your friends and I’m not going to give a shit about your retarded opinions. If you like DoA then thats great, but theres a reason none of the games have ever been taken seriously, while other fighters like SF, Tekken, SoulCal, or KoF have.

          • >you can’t start a juggle if he guesses right, and as soon as your juggle ends, you’re back to hoping he doesn’t guess right.
this applies to literally every game. you can’t throw if they guess jump. you can’t land an overhead if they guess stand block.
            >You can bait DP, you can read and estimate situations where someone is more likely to DP because SF has actual gameplay mechanics,
you can estimate but it doesn’t mean you’re correct 100% of the time or that you will always beat someone that goes completely random. do you think that meaties just don’t work when someone has an invincible reversal? do you think command grabs just don’t work? 50/50s or 33/33/33s etc are the foundation of this genre.
            >you can’t combo off of DPs like you can with the counters in DoA,
you can often DP super. the comboable counter holds are the character specific expert holds which are usually more strict on which moves they actually will hold, and can be balanced against the rest of the character’s moveset
            >and every single character in the game doesn’t have a DP that they can use at literally any second they aren’t in a the middle of a combo.
but some characters do. does the game cease to function when one person has a DP?
            >and in almost every situation a DP will just reset to neutral.
            just like standard holds

again i’m going to ask. do you think 50/50s are worthless? keep in mind that a counter hold is a four way guess

          • >this applies to literally every game.
no it doesn’t. there is not a single other fighting game where anyone who is actually good at it is forced to continually just guess. That is what the counters are, they are pure 100% guessing, and the majority of the "reads" in the series are intentionally dropping or whiffing hoping that you will catch someone guessing wrong.
            >do you think that meaties just don’t work when someone has an invincible reversal?
you don’t even play fighting games or know anything about them, or the terminology surrounding them and you make it more obvious every post.
Once again, no one cares if you like DoA, thats great, I’m glad you’re having fun, but don’t act like a fucking retard thinking its a good game because its not. You don’t know better than literally every other person who plays fighting games and can recognize that the gameplay design of the series is dogshit, and its extremely apparent you don’t even try to play any of these games at a level even slightly beyond couch vs games with your friends.

          • I genuinely don’t understand what the point of you making this thread was. You more or less asked why people don’t like the game or play it seriously, multiple people told you why and your response to everything has just be "nuh-uh"
You blatantly do not understand the gameplay mechanics of fighting games and what makes thems good or not, you obviously have never even attempted to play or understand any fighting game beyond an incredibly casual level, and you don’t even understand what the fighting game terms you tried to throw around even mean.
So again, what exactly is the point of this thread? DoA is not a good fighting game, for multiple reasons people have listed and therefore people don’t play it. The game is the video game equilivent of Maxim magazine, and if it had an all male cast not a single person would give a shit about it. If you like the game, great, but don’t be a fucking retard and get in debates about shit you clearly don’t understand or even care to understand. If you want an echo chamber then join a fan forum for the series or something.

          • >don’t even understand what the fighting game terms you tried to throw around even mean.
i’m not OP. get real dude
a meaty is an attack connecting after its first active frame, which means the opponent is kept in hitstun/ blockstun longer relative to your recovery. the most common way to guarantee a meaty is by attacking while the opponent is knocked down, timed so that they stand up into the attack during later active frames.
a reversal is a move timed after being affected by an attack, usually from blocking or being knocked down
            >do you think that meaties just don’t work when someone has an invincible reversal?
i’ll decode this for you since apparently it’s too hard for you to understand
Do you think that it is useless to attack a knocked down opponent if they are able to perform an invincible attack?
If your answer is yes, you don’t know how to play fighting games.
If your answer is no, then you should admit DOA’s holds that only counter one of 3 (later 4) hit areas are less empowering to the defender than a literally invincible attack.

          • >If your answer is no, then you should admit DOA’s holds that only counter one of 3 (later 4) hit areas are less empowering to the defender than a literally invincible attack.
except as everyone has told you before you can read or bait these. You cannot read a 4 way counter, you guess. You can’t read if someone will try to counter high or mid, you are guessing which one they pick. The counter system is guessing, when you can actually understand this, and how it is not at all comparable to other games where people are not literally 100% randomly guessing you may begin to understand why these games suck.

dude everyones against you, you’re embarrassing yourself.

All the fighting game savants of Ganker clearly know more than every single person with even a passing interest in fighting games over the past 25 years. This board is a joke, stick to talking about jrpgs.

          • >You can’t read if someone will try to counter high or mid
you sucking ass at the game is your problem.
Still waiting on that oh so amazing breakdown on how reads aren’t guesses and Reads are a positive contribution and guesses are game ruining.
Come on, do it. Die on the dumbest hill possible. You know you want to. You can’t fucking resist it.

          • Describe in detail how you can read whether someone is going to counter high or mid. I can’t wait to see what bullshit you’re going to try to pull out your ass for this.

          • lol dude throw in the towel, you’re ignoring points now so quit being a poser and pretending your "read" is anything more than a guess.

        • >every engagement in the game comes down to "welp hope he doesn’t guess right."
