Given the success of the game, yes, every game will now feature a progression from an introduction/opening to a choice of three storylines you can follow at your leisure. One will be the classic gym battles, one will be a search for whatever legendaries there are, and one will be some sort of gimmick unique to that region. Then two DLCs will come out and they'll move on to waiting for the next pair of games.

        >Would they need to make 18 different teams for every gym battle/team star admin battle depending on how you progress in the game?

8 teams per leader depending on progression, with the levels being within a range of your highest level mon. Ex: have two badges and level 20 as your highest mon, leader has three pokemon and their ace is level 23.

This really is not a lot of work.

"But still" what? Anyone competent can shit out eight variants of the same monotype team in the same game with the same mechanics, moves, items, pokedex, etc. in an hour or two, tops. Coding them in and checking them over for obvious errors might take a few employees and a few days, but team design ISN'T HARD.
Personally I'd prefer if they scaled up to match you if you have more badges than usual, but not down, so you can still jump ahead in the difficulty curve if you go somewhere early, but aren't punished with an easy fight for going late.

I would like the catching mechanics from Legends in a mainline game but I think it would be too broken

        Anonymous

        Why?

          Anonymous

Legends is all about catching a very large amount of pokemon, mainline games are more about catching few or only one of each

            Anonymous

            And that breaks it how?

I think it's because the focus of Arceus is catching, and catching gives experience to your whole team, so you might eventually end overleveled against all other trainers because you end catching hundreds of Pokemon, and we all know that GF can't level scale for shit. At least in Arceus you're constantly fighting Pokemon at your level or even higher, and even Pokemon several levels below you can still deal a lot of damage if you're not careful.

You can overlevel in any pokemon game and all of them since the 3DS games iirc give you exp for catching.
How is this not the same as throwing quick balls at Pokémon?

              Anonymous

Not necessarily, I'm pretty sure the games have been balanced around the new Exp Share since Gen 7, because turning it off in those games would end with your team severely underleveled past the third island. Legends is a game designed very differently from mainline, while in mainline you can be ten levels above and almost nothing will scratch you, in Legends that same difference means nill and your Pokemon can still be 2HKO'd.

                Anonymous

                >in Legends that same difference means nill and your Pokemon can still be 2HKO'd.
                Why?

                Anonymous

Because the gameplay mechanics are very different and opponent Pokemon are treated more like real RPG enemies instead of yet another bunch of stats with small differences, and opponents can act even before you can get to choose a move. For context since I'm currently playing the game, my Lv55 Porygon-Z got KO'd by two Lv17 Luxio, in just one round they managed to deplete half its HP bar because I failed to capture one of them, paralyzed it and and spammed Thunder Fang. Trainer and Alpha Pokemon battles also play differently because of the styles, Ingo's Machoke ended using Bullet Punch on me a whooping three times in a row before I could even act. It makes the game way more interesting and difficult when you can't just depend on overleveling to cruise your way through the game.

Also, you might think you're safe with your Lv55 Pokemon until you challenge an Alpha Torterra that ends being Lv65 and murders your entire team. Fun stuff.

10 levels overleveled against most wild Pokemon and trainers, but Alpha Pokemon will always mess you up if you're not careful. You think you can handle an Alpha Carnivine until it vomits a Strong Style Hyper Beam at your face.

So throw a ball at it. Its not difficult. You can even run away, and surprise it with a ball after the fight to make it's catch rate better.

PLA has different damage calculation formulas than the rest of the mainline games so levels don’t matter as much and double weaknesses only do 2.5x damage instead of 4x damage. The game would be unplayable tedious garbage if it didn’t have shared exp.

I want it to be a metroidvania with survival elements. Would be fun to worry about foraging and keeping warm, cooking that trope food in the series to buff your monsters. Also HM's already have a bit of a metroidvania thing with them, would be cool to improve their battle effectiveness and interconnect the gameworld more to make it have more itch scratching.

You have to go out of your way to enjoy this game without being overleved which is very annoying. I had to swap Pokemon around every five levels so I can give each gym/titan/team star a chance as being challenging.
It's really stupid that we can't turn the exp share off, especially because they made the fricking EXP Candy to destroy as "Grinding" problems so it makes zero fricking sense to keep it permanent.

      Anonymous

I almost got the “intended” route by accident so I never felt overleveled

        Anonymous

If you do it that way, it definitely helps, that's what I did, I made sure I did things by level order.
I made catching pokemon and trainer battles as the only source of exp gain, my team is only new Pokemon and swapping them out every 5 levels and it worked, if anything I was underleveled.
So I was least satisfied with the way I did it.

      Anonymous

It wouldn't be a problem if they just learned to balance it better.
If we are forced to have full team exp share, at the very least lower the exp gained overall. PLA somehow balanced it but I feel that was just because the game isn't about leveling up.

Ultra Sun and Moon was definitely a harder game than usual so having the exp share on worked well.

We know they can design them better, they just haven't since then.

The open nature is exactly what allows for SV to be difficult. Easily and organically too. While the railroaded design of practically all other pokemon games leave you terribly over levelled almost no matter what you do, provided you don't just go out of your way to bench your pokemon to cripple yourself.

      Anonymous

Or... they could design a game where the path forward doesn't keep you over the level of the enemies by default, so they don't need to skullfrick the identity of every location in the game.

So see here's the thing right
The game unlocks classes as you progress.
The "Zigzagging" works because you go back to the school to take those classes and then go to the other side.
The game was made for people to carve their own adventure and I did enjoy my way cause i still kept myself underleveled while still enjoying the level caps and doing the classes.

I hate to be the person who only decides later to cram all the classes in one session, that shit would suck so I'm glad I balanced it.

You can return and take the classes. But that doesn't mean you should all of a sudden explore the opposite end of the map instead.

Nemona was awesome, I liked that you get to fight her with Tera before you get it. She was a rival that was justified in her build up, I can almost forgive how pathetic Geeta was just because Nemona was the true fight.

Arvin was great too, his food and cooking themed team was neat, plot worked very well, he wasn't dramatic about it but had to accept the worst.

Penny was.....okay, i thought the plotline with Team Star was cool, but to me, the best part of that entire plot line was how extremely based and unexpectedly focused Directtor Clavel was, he was the actual main character, with discovering what fricking happened before he took over as Director

Great batch of friends that's for sure.

I find it funny how GF managed to create a Champion even more unlikeable than Leon, even most of the Gym Leaders don't like her.

        Anonymous

Leon is actively cringe, Geeta is just boring and a non-character
It's also funny how the structure of the game completely destroys her credibility- Paldea has multiple champions to build up Nemona, so to make up for this Geeta is called the greatest champion. But to become a champion, you have to beat Geeta. So Geeta literally has to be the worst champion by definition

Leon and Geeta are the only champions that feel like they make sense in the context of the stories they’re in. Shit like Steven/Cynthia/Diantha was just stupid

This but the opposite. I want trainers hyped up as strong to actually be strong.
Why does the champion who's supposedly an unmatched battling prodigy because he understands the type chart use a Pokemon with hilariously exploitable weaknesses and nothing to curb them for his ace?
Why does supposedly the strongest champion in the region use multiple Pokemon in obviously suboptimal positions in her team? If there were some further rank beyond champion, and she was holding back because only the true top tier of battlers needed to be tested with all her strength, that'd be fine. But there's not.

            Anonymous

Shit like Steven/Cynthia/Diantha makes sense because they're not fellated by their respective games as these super unbeatable characters you'll have to eventually challenge, they're just people with their own jobs who you meet here and there and help you out, but that stand at the top of the Pokemon League because they're the strongest in their respective regions, not because they own it. Even Leon somehow fits this description, it's just that the game won't stop shoving down your throat how he's UNBEATABLE and the best thing since sliced bread, also his Charizard because frick yeah Kanto.

From early in the game Nemona tells you how Geeta is the strongest of the strongest champions in Galar and why she's called La Primera, but her fight comes more as a final exam to an optional course you took at the academy because you just needed the credits, and her team is so laughably bad that it makes you wonder if there are more than a handful of champions in the region with how terrible Galar trainers apparently are.

            >but muh Smogon
Bro the game is for kids playing for the first time you are not getting anything more complex than Leon having max overgrowth to surprise water/rock types

Charizard is bad with or without entry hazards because fire/flying is an ASS defensive typing and it's not fast or bulky enough to survive a solid hit from a water, electric, or rock-type move.
Your obsession with this weird incomplete notion of Smogon is baffling. The reason their meta is "fanfiction" is because they don't have one meta, they have like six, they try to break Pokemon up into tiers so more of them are usable. It's the same mindset as the Little Cup in Stadium 2.

Anyone not in favor of the aimless open world must be in favor of USUM-tier story gating, anyone who isn't actively shit at battling and wants games catered to them is just sucking Smogon's dick, anyone who points out how ass the games look is just a graphics prostitute.

                >anyone who isn't actively shit at battling and wants games catered to them is just sucking Smogon's dick

I play ranked doubles, my issue is that people take things that are true in the heavily controlled Smogon meta and then try to assert them as applying to the campaign or ranked singles. Gmax Charizard was one of the strongest Pokemon full stop last gen, it is beyond moronic seeing people hem and haw about the champ using it because
                >uh don’t you know it is bad on Smogon where you can’t use Dynamax and a bunch of shit is banned?

                >things that are true in the heavily controlled Smogon meta
And... in general. Maybe specifically gmax charizard, in an environment where sun is common, thrives, but in general play and without that support- like Leon's fight- it's basically just a Charizard with some stat bloat. And Charizard is, as ever, mid-tier at best.

Starters in general are like upper 15% of Pokemon you’re going to use in a playthrough, it’s not a competitive battle you’re using whatever random shit you have for the story

I don't know what to tell you guys. My girlfriend and I got the double pack and played the whole game co-op and it was easily one of my favorite Pokemon experiences. This is coming from a 30-year old boomer whose first game was Yellow.
There was a part early on where we found a way to teleport across a gap by throwing our Pokemon in to the other side. We were level 5-10 in a 30-40 area, laughing and running away from the much too strong for us Pokemon.

Pokémon Violet made feel the adventure for the first time since I first played Emerald back when I was a kid (was my first Poke game)
I've always daydreamed about a 3D open world Poke game and Violet scratches that itch, finally
The only other Poke games I have played other than Emerald and Violet were Platinum and Heartgold when they released btw
I was also impressed by the sheer number of Pokémon in Violet, I know about the dexcut shit but since I skipped Pokemon for 10 years it doesn't bother me at all, 400 Pokémon (600 when second DLC releases) is plenty, when compared to the older entries I've played which had 200-ish pokemons

I haven't played it yet. How open world are we talking? Like if I wanted to could I skip the gyms go right to end or do you need badges and moves to get past certain barriers to entry? Do pokemon scale with you or are there areas with higher level pokemon to deter you from exploring there without locking you out

      Anonymous

You have a hour or so long tutorial then you're given three storylines to follow(The pokemon league, the titans, and team star) that you can do in any order. then once you complete them you have an endgame quest. You an go pretty muh anywhere on the map immediately though except the endgame area and catch just about any pokemon.

Pokemon levels don't scale but like with previous games, the number of badges determines what level pokemon will obey you, and the titan quest gets you upgrades for your sandwich dog motorcycle(so he can climb, surf, fly, etc).

        Anonymous

Oh and I should say the gym leaders are also not scaled. So you can get over leveled very easily, or go fight a lv 40 gym leader with your lv 10 pokemon.

The map is designed so the lower level gyms are closer to the starting point and the higher levels are harder to get to though
