Should I just play all the games from the beginning? Are there any worth skipping?
Fire emblems the tactical RPG where you send units around and levelupsare semi-random, right?
Is fire emblem worth getting into?

Yeah sure.
Thanks guys, very cool
no lol
I always name my Tactician in Fire Emblem "Rance" since he's a brown-haired guy who wears green and all the girls wanna bang him.
>Should I just play all the games from the beginning?
No, FE1 on the NES is a pretty terrible starting point.
Your best options are Fire Emblem on the GBA (the one in your pic), or Awakening on the 3DS if you want one of the more "modern" FEs.
>Your best options are Fire Emblem on the GBA (the one in your pic),
Is that just a remake if the original?
I don't mind doing the retro GBA stuff first
No.
Shadow Dragon on the DS is a remake of Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light on the NES.
New Mystery of the Emblem on the DS is a remake of Mystery of the Emblem on the SNES. The remake is JP only but there's a translation patch.
Echoes: Shadows of Valentia on the 3DS is a remake of Gaiden on the NES.
Also, some games are sequels/prequels of others.
>Mystery is a sequel to Shadow Dragon, same with the remakes
>Echoes takes place in the world of Shadow Dragon and shares some characters but it's not really connected
>Thracia 776 is a midquel to Genealogy of the Holy War, happening between chapters 6-8 of it
>Blazing Sword is a sequel to Binding Blade
>Radiant Dawn is a sequel to Path of Radiance
Holy fuck that's autistic
How has nobody made an image with a guide yet?
Because it literally doesn't fucking matter.
They're mostly self-contained and outside of a few names there aren't any big references you need to understand to get the story.
Sword is a sequel to Binding Blade
Blazing Blade takes place before Binding, chronologically.
Yeah, while rewriting the post I messed that up.
Jugdral games also happen in the world of Shadow Dragon, we just dont know "when" so it doesn't really matter
World of Archanea* Shadow Dragon is the remake lol
>Shadow Dragon is the remake lol
you do realize that fe 1 was called fire emblem: shadow dragon and the sword of light, don't you?
It's Dark Dragon and the Sword of Light.
I dont
I had somehow forgotten FE1 had a title
They happen 1k years before Marth's game, but its on another continent so it doesn't matter
I wonder what Kaga was building up to with his FE setting before he left?
probably some proto-rance shit. you can't look at a game like gaiden and not think of fe as uncle kaga's personal fetish factory.
Unironically Fe7, PoR/RD and possibly even 3H. TRS shares some plot beats with FE7 and 3H (although i feel those might be more of a coincidence) and BS is basically Tellius except self contained into a single game.
If you enjoy SRPGs, yeah, check out the series.
I would say to start with your pic, to be honest. It is notorious for having a beginning section that kind of holds your hand for 11ish chapters, introducing you to a lot of the concepts and mechanics of Fire Emblem, since it was the first title to hit the west.
Awakening fucking sucks, don't play that as your first. If you want to play a 3D title as your first, I'd say to play Path of Radiance or Birthright.
Yeah I started with your pic related and now I'm into the series, it's worth it
Play Thracia 776, the GBA ones, Conquest and Engage. Maybe the Tellius ones too.
This anon is right but don't for the ever loving God ever play Thracia 776 , you can miss heals
YOU CAN MISS HEALS
Play Fire Emblem Geanology first. It's the best in the series. Massive maps, sweeping music, epic story and the gameplay is genuinely a lot of fun despite what shitposters and newfags say on here/
If you don't feel like that, you can start with any of the gba games fe6,fe7,fe8 are a really good time for a more conventional fire emblem experience.
All the games after awakening are a mistake and something to play after lots of experience with actual fire emblem games like the ones i mentioned.
I like Genealogy and would recommend it as the starting point because it would be harder to come back to after playing newer games but calling it the best in the series is an absolute negative IQ take
Genealogy is amazing and you can play it for free as a flash game just google it and everyone should.
Imo best starting point is either FE7 or Path of Radiance though.
Fuck the new weeb shit games though
Play Dark Dragon on the Famicom and onwards.
>b-but that's ol-ACK!
Suck it up gay pussy.
>Should I just play all the games from the beginning?
Series is pretty fun yeah. Start with 7 if you have the stomach for god awful tutorials that last way too long and treat you like a retard, start with Awakening if you don't mind toilet armor.
>Are there any worth skipping?
DS remakes are pretty meh, Fates BR and Fates CQ are very good if you ignore the shitty story but Fates Revelations is just not worth playing.
You can skip the DS and 3DS games.
Can't imagine being this much of a cuck.
Missing out on Mystery, Conquest, and Echoes. Couldn't be me.
>Skip the 3DS games
>Don't skip the Switch games
gay
it's very basic by srpg standards to the point where the micro of relative unit stats matters so much that it informs your overall strategy 90% of the time unless you play on low difficulty(in which case nothing really matters). it's especially bad in the games where build/con are a thing since you need to autistically check whether you double/get doubled when calculating whether you'll tank enemy phase or not through a rather tedious process of individually checking unit build stats, speed stats, and what weapon they're using rather than simply referencing speed like in other games(in fe4 you also need to check for the ability). it's also a series where it's very easy to get fucked by rng in most games since level ups are basically always +1 or +0 in stat growths outside of unicorn +2 growths which you'll never see in most games. there's a very big disparity between the ceiling and floor for unit growth compared to other srpgs like fft and brigandine. to account for permadeath you also get tons more units than you can field but they aren't generics so you're inclined to use them, but because xp gain increase/decay is linear rather than exponential bringing up new units is almost never worth it so most of your roster in games where you don't just deploy all units sits on the permabench.
>it's very basic by srpg standards to the point where the micro of relative unit stats matters so much that it informs your overall strategy 90% of the time
Is there a good way to avoid this without relying too heavily on strategy warping character skills (passive or use)? Lean more heavily into the RPS element of the weapon triangle?
>Is there a good way to avoid this without relying too heavily on strategy warping character skills (passive or use)?
there aren't really active use skills in these games unless you count magic in gaiden/3h. otherwise, most games have magic act like swords and other weapons you equip taking the form of a magic book. some games like the one in op don't even have passives. some games have passives that make or break characters like pursuit in fe4 while others have passives that don't really matter that much like most personal passive skills in 3h/engage. it's very game dependent where passive skills are a big deal or not whereas your stats are almost always determinative.
>Lean more heavily into the RPS element of the weapon triangle?
this one is also very game dependent. in fe7(the one in op), it's there and it matters, but almost every enemy unit uses lances. so you'd think all 3 weapons would be equal, but because the game is so saturated with lance enemies swords end up being shit. there's also no 2 range sword in that game but there are 2 range axes called hand axes and 2 range lances called javelins so swords units in that game are bitches with no enemy phase. in other games weapon triangle doesn't matter as much like in fe4. in gaiden it doesn't even exist. granted, in engage it's very important because of breaking.
>so swords units in that game are bitches with no enemy phase
Swords are pretty much always given the short end of the stick and it sucks. Axes dominate every game from 7 until 12. Very sad.
>to account for permadeath you also get tons more units than you can field but they aren't generics so you're inclined to use them, but because xp gain increase/decay is linear rather than exponential bringing up new units is almost never worth it so most of your roster in games where you don't just deploy all units sits on the permabench.
This is my least favorite thing about most fire emblem games. And echoes letting you deploy everyone and not showering you with superfluous characters is a big part of why it's my favorite fire emblem.
Every FE is unique and what holds true in one probably wont in another. Just play whatever makes your dick hard or looks cool. If you want to be really contrarian, start with Engayge and work your way backwards
>Is fire emblem worth getting into
Yes
>Should I just play all the games in order
Unless you're extremely autistic, I really wouldn't suggest it.
They all tend to take place in different worlds, so there isn't much point to playing in order, 7, the first western game, is a good starting point though.
I wouldn't personally start with anything before 6, not that they're bad games, but they're good to go back to once you know you like fire emblem and want more.
7, path of radiance or engage are all probably good places to start, feel free to hop around to whichever game you want after that, or even start with something else.
Level ups are generally random, yeah, based on growth rates.
>Should I just play all the games from the beginning?
No.
There are too many FE games of varying quality, challenge, overall gameplay. 1, 2 and 3 are all redundant to play because they've been remade and the originals don't really offer anything other than historical curiosity.
Just pick whatever game interests you the most and go from there, obviously the newer the games, the more QoL stuff you're gonna get which is a factor if you're new so keep that in mind, older titles can be a bit slow and tedious to play compared to post awakening.
With that said, the GBA games are very simplistic and fun overall, it's just FE without any gimmicks or added mechanics. Conquest is I'd say the best design game in terms of gameplay in the series, but it is quite hard if you're new and don't really know how to approach a FE game. Path of Radiance is a very good quality game. Engage is second to Conquest in terms of gameplay and is pretty forgiving but has a lot of new mechanics to learn (though it's really not complicated at all). Every game is and plays differently than all the others.
Also, keep in mind that the core of FE gameplay is to raise an army more than it is to beat the maps. You have a finite number of XP, gold and resources to train your army, not every unit is as good as everyone else, learning who to give kills to, planning ahead and creating strategies is what FE is all about. One thing I do not recommend at all is to play whatever game you feel like playing on anything under hard and classic (permadeath) mode. FE is extremely dull and boring when you're not thinking. Usually Hard is the most well balanced difficulty. Also, it's a good idea to look up some sort of beginner guide or something so you know how damage and the basic mechanics work.
Play FE7 and 9, that's pretty much all you need.
>Is fire emblem worth getting into?
The good games in the series are worth playing, idk about "getting into" it though
>Should I just play all the games from the beginning?
no
>Are there any worth skipping?
yes
>play: FE4, Thracia 776, all of the gameboy games, FE9 and maybe FE10
>don't play: Fates, Engage
the rest are "maybe" tier
Engage is plenty worth playing, it has some of the best gameplay in the series.
It's arguably the game that fixed the boss problem for fire emblem.
>play: FE4, Thracia 776, all of the gameboy games, FE9 and maybe FE10
So 4-10 in other words.
yeah
If you can stomach the retarded plot, stupid characters and abysmal writing + voice acting then sure play Engage
That's true, engage is worth warning him about the cringe, but by the same token 3 houses is worth warning him about the timewasting the game does, and how it feels stretched too thin and doesn't even play like a lot of the rest of the games.
Both are definitely worth playing, though.
nta but if that's the roster you're going to go with you should play it in this order. 8, 7, 6, 4, 5, 9 10. 8 is by far the easiest of the bunch and also the one where you can make up for bad early levels very cleanly. 8 and 7 are also very distilled in terms of what fe is so you'll have a good grasp on the mechanical fundamentals by the time you try 5/6(which are relatively difficult) and 4(which is a bit different). 9 and 10 represent the jump to 3d which might make it hard to go back to earlier entries, but they're not very far off mechanically.
Terrible taste, but that's common around here.
Genuinely should consider playing Three Houses first. I think it plays significantly better than Awakening and Fates, and is way less cringe writing-wise than both.
It also plays pretty differently to the GBA games (Blades and Stones) which are great too, so there'd be some variety if you're getting into the series.
The Ike games are also pretty great and it's cool seeing the whole battle map in 3D.
Shadows of Valentia is another great entry, it's standalone and pretty streamline, so would also be a good starting off point.
All up to you however, you seem to not care about accessibility, so just go with whatever aesthetic and characters you seem to like the most from a glance. There's not a lot of ways to go wrong really.
>Genuinely should consider playing Three Houses first
You should generally consider suicide.
3H is way too divergent from the typical FE in regards to both the way it presents its narrative and characters, and the core mechanics, for it to be an acceptable entry point into the series.
>and is way less cringe writing-wise than both.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
no
Edelgard has a point. If Dimitri just rolled over and let his kingdom get slaughtered then the actual humans in the Empire wouldn't have to die.
>The empire where all the gay characters in the game minus Yuri come from
>Human
Yes.
The only games you should play are New Mystery, Conquest, Engage, Thracia 776, and Binding Blade. Avoid everything else with Genealogy, Path of Radiance and Echoes like the plague unless you have low standards. Radiant Dawn and Blazing are okay.
>avoid Path of Radiance
>play Radiant Dawn
moron are you retarded
PoR is complete dogshit made for retards (no wonder it's so popular), while RD is a proper game.
>Play Thracia, avoid Geneology
Didn't tip you off even before that?
What's wrong with that? Can't handle Thracia like a bitch?
Are you retarded?
Are you the same person?
I was implying that if you play one you should play them both.
You don't need to play a shitty game like Geneology before playing Thracia. No, muh shit story isn't relevant and it retcons shit anyway.
This is an acceptable opinion since Thracia's kind of a standalone story with few overlapping characters and Genealogy's gameplay is feline AIDS and should be avoided. POR and RD are kind of similar in gameplay and RD is a direct sequel.
Genealogy's gameplay is fine, gay.
You only believe this since you have low standards.
I believe it because I've beaten majority of the FE games, and it stands out for being different and solving issues that plagued other FE games, despite having its own problems.
The only games I haven't played/beaten are 1-3, 11-12 because I'm planning to do Akenia all at once.
This. It's another reason why I'm unironically excited for a Remake, if it speeds up the game.
What I dislike the most about nu-FE is how focused on unit customization the series has become. Reclassing, grinding for skills, optimizing your characters, etc. I don't think you should be able to reshape characters to such a degree. At least in 4, your customization was specifically for your gen 2 characters and it largely comes down to just passing on correct items and pairing gen 1 characters.
>it stands out for being different
That's called shitty gimmicks that don't work well.
>solving issues that plagued other FE games
Name one.
>What I dislike the most about nu-FE is how focused on unit customization the series has become. Reclassing, grinding for skills, optimizing your characters, etc. I don't think you should be able to reshape characters to such a degree. At least in 4, your customization was specifically for your gen 2 characters and it largely comes down to just passing on correct items and pairing gen 1 characters.
this. fe isn't fft nor will it ever be. trying to make fe units into psuedo-generics never ends up feeling good or natural.
>What I dislike the most about nu-FE is how focused on unit customization the series has become
Yeah, that's fair.
Some customization is good, but I think we have too much as it is now.
I think it's sort of a mechanical carryover from awakening and they're afraid to step away from that.
It's nice building your characters, optimizing them, making them broken, but at some point the characters have to have a unique identity and set of limitations and roles.
>It's nice building your characters, optimizing them, making them broken, but at some point the characters have to have a unique identity and set of limitations and roles.
This has been my biggest issue with Enagage's gameplay. The characters are basically flesh suits for the rangs and classes. Even personal skills aren't as impactful.
In what way is a character like Etie similar to Louis?
>Even personal skills aren't as impactful.
For the Firene shitters and maybe Brodians, Solm and Elusia hogged all the good skills.
I just can't deal with fixed level ups. I'm an RNG junkie, just let me see my units get screwed or blessed.
If you download a completed save, you can start maddening/lunatic or whatever it is with random growths.
>What I dislike the most about nu-FE is how focused on unit customization the series has become
I hate this too, along with the trend of having every enemy on the map be the exact same power level. In old FEs if one of your units dies it's not that big of a deal since you can level up their replacement somewhat naturally, but in new FEs if someone dies they're literally irreplaceable because of aforementioned customisation, and levelling them up to parity is much harder because you have to feed them kills with chip damage against enemies that do 38x2 to them.
>if someone dies they're literally irreplaceable
Permadeath matter now more than it ever did is what you're saying.
Resetting matters more now than it ever did is what I'm saying
So you're shit at the games and want free hand-outs? Makes sense.
He's right though.
Character deaths matter almost as much as they ever have now, but resetting around them is all but built into the game, just look at the turnwheel mechanic.
There is a reason the casts have been so small, you're just expected to reset when units die now, getting a replacement up and running is largely unexpected, you can, but it's becoming increasingly less the focus.
Yeah, I don't like how 80% of personal skills are totally useless, it's actually nice for some to be way better than others but I'd prefer them to be more impactful and have more character
>He's right though.
He's completely wrong just like you.
>Character deaths matter almost as much as they ever have now
You mean they genuinely matter now.
>resetting around them
>>So you're shit at the games and want free hand-outs?
>just look at the turnwheel mechanic
What does a shit mechanic from Echoes have to do with anything? Neither Echoes or Engage is designed with this mechanic in mind.
>is a reason the casts have been so small
There's only two games with small casts (SS and Gaiden/SoV). A cast size doesn't even matter, New Mystery/Shadow Dragon has bloated characters yet they are shitters who can't do anything on H5/RL.
>just expected to reset when units die now
If you're retarded and shit at the games, sure. That's a you problem if you can't into ironman.
>getting a replacement up and running is largely unexpected
Like the mid-game characters from Engage and Fates? Or the added hand-outs of the My Castle features where you can collect generics and bosses?
>t's becoming increasingly less the focus.
Wow, you mean a grant total of 3H?
>You mean they genuinely matter now.
They really don't, because while you can choose to go on with character deaths there are no systems in place to support that style of play, whereas the style of play of resetting on character death is so well supported that all it takes to get rid of those mistakes is a quick one use of your ten rewinds per chapter.
>So you're shit at the games and want free hand-outs?
Whine however you want, they're in the game, I didn't put them in, I like ironman runs, but the game isn't built that way. The facts just outright contradict your opinions.
>What does a shit mechanic from Echoes have to do with anything?
Maybe being a core mechanic in engage?
Oh god, fine, lets call it the fucking dragon timestone if you're going to be a pedantic little shit about it.
You can act like this is in their focus but when every goddamn game has a casual mode and a rewind built in we both know it's just lip service. Show any evidence of the games actually being built more and more around permadeath, hell, one of the biggest issues with engage is something directly contrary to that.
Everything scales like crazy and there's almost no way to train up benched units, past a certain point in the game you stop getting replacements and the last few you get are just ok at most anyways, at what point will you accept that you're not expected to lose many units and still play through the game in an intended manner?
>They really don't
>death doesn't mater
>that's why I reset because I lost unit
>oh, but death doesn't matter, you get me
You can't be this fucking stupid.
>while you can choose to go on with character deaths
Yes, it's called ironman. Maybe try it some time. Might be too hard for you.
>no systems in place to support that style of play
Yes there are, are you retarded? You get replacement features and easy access to boosters for a reason in every game. NW/SD gives you easy reclasses, while Engage, Awakening, and Fates has easier (and even broken) hubworld options.
>he style of play of resetting on character death is so well supported
Yeah, it's called FE.
>Whine however you want,
Did facts hurt your feelings?
> they're in the game
Resetting has always been possible, what does that have to do with anything?
> I didn't put them in, I like ironman runs
You clearly don't because it's too much for you to handle in games that put up a fight.
> but the game isn't built that way
What? Like using Tina who has access to exclusive staffs? Or Caeda who can recruit select units?
>The facts
are you don't know what you're talking about.
>Maybe being a core mechanic in engage?
It isn't, neither Echoes or Engage are ever built around using the turnwheel. What part of you're an idiot who's shit at the games will get across to you?
Goddamn you're fucking stupid.
I even want the same things as you, you're just too stupid and caught in your tribal us/them shit to see you have no fucking point. Jesus dude, crawl out of your own ass sometime.
I'm glad you could concede like a bitch. Maybe try being better at a series design for children to play?
You are almost as stupid as dark souls 2 enjoyers, 3h and awakening really dragged in the worst.
No, you're just an idiot that doesn't understand game design. It's always been the case with this series will never change.
I too enjoy plugging my ears and sticking my head in the sand and pretending everything is fine by saying git gud whenever someone points out a problem with my games, more than one parallel with das2 players, shocking.
There's no point bickering about this and shitting up the thread, so this is as much as you'll get from me.
>I too enjoy plugging my ears
Like the fact I'm waiting for someone to explain how Genealogy isn't a dumpsterfire, or getting BTFO with a concept done better today by being more impact and then running away?
>NOOOOOO THEY JUST CANT MAKE GAMES FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY!!!!! I AM THE HECKIN CENTER OF THE UNIVERSEAROONY ONLY WHAT I WANT MATTERS HRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
>Goddamn you're fucking stupid.
>I even want the same things as you, you're just too stupid and caught in your tribal us/them shit to see you have no fucking point.
Just the wording of this made me lose my shit
>has a casual mode and a rewind built
None of which are NM, Awakening, Fates, Echoes, and Engage built around.
>games actually being built more and more around permadeath
Why do you reset when a unit dies? Answer this question like the shitter you are and you got it.
>one of the biggest issues with engage
Don't talk about game design when you don't understand it.
>Everything scales like crazy
The only thing that scales is Skirmishes.
>there's almost no way to train up benched units
>forges
>reclasses
>Emblems
>DLC
>the entirely of Somniel (Well, Arena, Tonics, Meals, Trials, etc)
Are you genuinely retarded?
>you stop getting replacements
You get characters until chapter 23. Tell me what game the chapter ends on.
>last few you get are just ok at most anyways
Like Lindon and Veyle who are both mages, and staff utility + magical attacks are arguably the best in the game?
>that you're not expected to lose many units
You're not supposed to play in mind that you're losing 6 units per chapter units left and right, that means you're shit at the game and couldn't even make it past FE3 Book 2. How fucking bad are you at this series? Maybe stick to garbage like Genealogy if Conquest and Engage are too hard for you.
Retards get filtered by it. Not to say it doesn't have problems but the game is perfectly playable and a lot of fun.
It's terrible and I can tell you don't understand a single facet of game design by saying this.
Just stating someone doesn't understand game design when they like something that you disagree with is the true sign of a pseud. You've brought up zero points as to why 4 is apparently badly designed.
You want some? The game has too many terrible gimmicks instead of focusing on a solid core. The levels consists of dead space and randomly placed block of enemies with no thoughful layout. Massive maps, but encounters only happen in close quarters, archers have 2 range again despite Gaiden having longer in smaller maps, your time is just spent mindlessly moving units forward rather than making interesting tactical decisions that induce any mobilization, with annoyingly long stretches of backtracking and terrain that hinders movement.
90% of the game is a boring ass enemy phase of the PoR variety even with animations off which looks crappy, you can make a sandwich by the time the EP is over; that's all done by Sigurd/Seliph who wipes out fields of enemies all by themselves. There are no basic combat scenario that takes advantage of the large map size of characters trying to cross an openfield in a proper battle field while being assaulted at a distance, this sort of scenario can't occur because archers can only fire from 1 square away again and Ballistas are rare. There's like one map in FE4 that even takes advantage attacking from range of the seige tomes and it's braindead easy because Sigurd can dodge it all by himself.
Churches are utterly useless, home base pretty much never gets attacked, the game is so unbelievably unbalanced it's like IS didn't even try with so many of the cast and weapons invalidating each other, a clunky as all hell and counter-intuitive money/item exchange systems that a poor attempt of funneling the absurd amount of gold the player gets on offer to buy whatever and whenever without consequence. Doesn't even make sense given you're all in the same army and are working together, with cryptic as hell events that hide away stuff. Fiddling with:
>enter base
>sell the item
>send the reciever to a base
>enter
>purchase the item
is pointless fucking busywork as they could have just balanced items properly instead.
Don't forget that after you capture B a bunch of XP pinatas come running out of C while siege tome mages and axe dudes execute them. And the hills right next to C can't be passed by unpromoted mounted units
I played through this entire series recently and I just want to say that this map was so mind numbingly tedious and terrible that it very nearly got me to drop FE4. No other map in any of these games came anywhere near as close to boring as this shit was.
>retards got filtered by moving sigurd forward to win
sure dude
Start from 7, then do 6 and from there move up installment by installment. Go back to the Akenia and Jugdral games once you've finished up to 10.
i personally hate fire emblem i haven't played any of the modern one and i know some people are critical of them because from awakening they became more weeb baits but my experience with the one between 6 and 10 is that there's a lot of bullshit
first of all, it's a very basic game, there's no spells, no skills, no elemental weakness, there's a RPS weapon triangle where swords beat axes, axes beats lances and lances beat swords and a few outside cases such as bows beating flying units, that's all the gameplay you gonna get, X beats Y
the units can only be equipped with one weapon which breaks after a certain amount of attacks, if you find a cool new sword that has a high crit rate, guess what, you are just supposed to save it for the boss, like it's a shitty consumable
when one of your character level up, the stats it gains are completly random, it's possible for a character to level up and achieving absolutely nothing with that level up, i have no fucking idea how anyone thought that was a good idea
some characters are fucking traps, because their stat gains are so low, it's pointless to play with them, in every game you are given one unit which looks OP as fuck but it's actually a noob trap because it's stat growth fucking sucks, they even gave it a name, "the jeigan" named after the first of this shitty archetype
stuff is easy to miss, there's some map where weapons or consumables might be hidden, or there might be a new character that you can recruit by doing certain things
despite this being a strategy game, enemies often pops out of nowhere in "ambush event" completly screwing up with what you had planned which is especially bad because...
the worst thing of all is that this game has perma-death, if one of your character dies, that's it, you don't get to use anymore, i cannot explain how frustrating it is, to play a map for 30 minutes, only to have one of your character miss an attack with 95% chance to hit and getting countered with a crit
>i personally hate fire emblem i haven't played any of the modern one and i know some people are critical of them because from awakening they became more weeb baits
You think?
>some characters are fucking traps, because their stat gains are so low, it's pointless to play with them, in every game you are given one unit which looks OP as fuck but it's actually a noob trap because it's stat growth fucking sucks, they even gave it a name, "the jeigan" named after the first of this shitty archetype
Jeigans are universally considered to be good units though. For whatever reason people get so hung up over final chapter stats when what should matter the most is getting through the rest of the game.
Good fucking luck in FE6 or FE9 or Awakening in higher difficulties if you don't use Marcus/Titania/Frederic at all
Especially Titania since she actually has competent growths, just like Seth in SS. Thinking that Jagens are bad is a 100% clear cut indicator that the person talking is a retard.
It depends on the game. Some Jeigans are only relevant for 2 chapters before completely fading into irrelevance and being a burden. Others for half the game. The important ones are solid units for the entire game and carry their weight.
Who are the bad Jeigans anyway? Jeigan himself is a god in all the games he's in and the Oifeys are all great. I feel like the bad Jeigan thing only really applied to Gunter and now Vander but Gunter is really useful for his pair up bonuses and his easy wyvern reclass.
I haven't played around with Vander all that much though
Aran was fucking awful in the original FE3 because he gets mogged by Catria who joins the chapter right after he does, and Palla the one after, and he is only good in FE12 because you need any non shitter you can have and also weapon ranks and reclassing.
Jeigan is crap in Dark Dragon as it gives you better Cavs and Mercs right away, OG Mystery Arran exists in the game where you're already running into deployment issues not even 5 chapters in. Shadow Dragon has everyone be useless once Caeda with her Pfr and Lena with Warp is available unless you deal with the insanely that is H5. Gunter exists solely as a Guard stance bot for Kamui or you don't use him at all, Vander is useful for 4 chapters before never being touched again.
Jeigan isn't all that great in fe1. A few chapters later you get Hardin who has better stats, good growths, and a great weapon rank. Also Cain and Abel shoukd start outpacing him pretty early.
>For whatever reason people get so hung up over final chapter stats when what should matter the most is getting through the rest of the game
problem is you want jegans to tank and feed your weaker more growth oriented units kills. the gba giga bros one shot and double fucking everything so that's all xp down the drain.
Titania and Frederick are Oifeys
You're supposed to use them like a precision missile strike to delete anything that could endanger other units
>Jeigan himself is a god in all the games he's in
he's only okay in 11 and falls off very quickly.
that aside, sothe is basically the jegan of the meme brigade and he's only okay without the buffs he gets if you played PoR. frederick is also only okay in awakening. most awakening units have such utterly demented growths that he can fall off pretty quick.
>You're supposed to use them like a precision missile strike to delete anything that could endanger other units
most bosses in the gba games dont move. most maps dont have minibosses with giga bro weapons. enemy ai is also retarded in fe in general so the gba jegans are just an xp black hole most of the time.
>Good fucking luck in FE6 or FE9 or Awakening in higher difficulties if you don't use Marcus/Titania/Frederic at all
I mean, I put Frederick as a backpack to my shittiest unit if that counts as "using".
I know that Nostanking is optimal, but as much as Awakening hates me doing it, I actually want to play the game.
Pair up in Awakening felt so cheap and stupid that I actively avoided using it
This is the opinion of a person who played once and hated it. Full of hot takes that seem correct at first but are all wrong if you actually play the games or just straight up incorrect/bad faith arguments. Reads like aI generated pasta.
Ignoring everyone else's opinion, every game is worth playing once if you really enjoy the franchise but I'm never replaying 1-6 vanilla ever again. The rest are great and there's a handful of romhacks that are worth playing too
It's one of the funniest games to play.
The stories are mostly just there for filler and to get you attached to the characters, but the ludonarrative it's king:
>Playing Engage Hard Ironman wait until Ch.9 to do DLC. didn't beat the game i know,.
>Do Tiki's map, my units are around lvl7-8 except for Alear and Alcryste who just promoted while enemies are 12-13
>Bring Elite1 Alcryst!Edelgard and Archer 6 Etie!SpurAttack to deal with the dragon spawns, curbstomping most of the map until Turn 22-25 when I get bored of camping the reinforcements so I use lvl 9 Sigurd!Alfred to bait one side closer to me
>I trigger everyone
>OH FUCK OH FUCK IT'S OVER
>Get pincer attack by the triggered enemies+reinforcements
>Alcryst almost dies due to a Dragon Freeze from previous turn and Dragon+Armor attack.
>Be lucky enough that Edelgard!Flame Gambit showed up + Roy!Alear Blazing Lion stopped the rest of the triggered enemies.
It was really fun.
Does anyone know where I can get a translated ROM of Genealogy and Thracia? They're the only two I haven't played and even though I've used IPS to patch ROMs before, they keep coming out fucked up and unplayable and all the prepatched ROMs I can find are 20+ years old and really rough.
/feg/ has a compilation with every game up to 2017.
Thanks! I'll look into that.
They changed it so that instead of being a MEGA download it's all codes for presumably torrents and I have no clue where to even put those codes
https://base64.io They're just links to Vimm's and mediafire.
Got em both working, thanks a ton!
if you need anything fe-related you can always hit up the fe forum called serenasforest. /feg/ over on /vg/ also has links for important stuff.
I know of Serenes Forest, but I'm pretty sure they play it safe and don't condone piracy/emulation.
For genealogy, get the project naga patch, get a rom of the japanese game and patch it with IPS, the jp name is Seisen no Keifu, make sure you're using the correct patch for your rom, you need to check if had a header or not
I don't understand why people suggest shit like 3H or Awakening for people's first FE games when those games have some of the shittiest gameplay in the franchise. If I was recommended those I would never have ended up liking the series, but I instead had my first two games be Conquest and FE6 and as such actually got into what mattered (gameplay).
Fuck, even Engage would be a better starting point for newfags since the gameplay is actually decent. Fucking FE8 and FE9 would be better too.
I am missing out if I never played the first 2?
The first 3 games have remakes
Give me titles plox.
Shadow Dragon is the remake of FE1.
Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is the remake of FE2.
New Mystery of the Emblem is the remake of FE3.
Wasn't FE3 already a remake of FE1?
Yeah.
The FE1 remake in FE3 is slightly cut down, removing some characters and chapters, but introducing some of the new mechanics of FE3 like movement ranges and dismounting.
Book 1 is a remake of Dark Dragon but it guts some chapters and characters from the game.
>Wrys replaced with a vulnerary
Kek
It's pretty weird since that's your only healer until Lena.
Isn’t that the 3rd chapter?
Yeah but you don't get any healing stages that can be until chapter 4.
3H maddening if anything showed how Jagens are still important and that their absence can hurt a games difficulty.
Then again, it could just be 3H's bad gameplay in general
3h maddening is just shitty. ambush spawns are never good design.
Binding Blade ambush spawns while still feeling bullshit for whatever reason felt better than 3H maddening ambush spawns
3h maddening was a shitty afterthought that they cobbled together and didn't bother playtesting.
Thank fuck engage's actually feels like someone played it.
3HrT is just a bad game in general.
start with 7 and if you like it branch out from there, i personally really enjoyed 9 but you should emulate it and speed it up at least 130% because it is super slow
engage is also a decent starting point but the turn wheel is not present in the other games except 3H and it introduces other mechanics that won't be in the other ones as well
Who was worse between Awakeningbabbies back in their heyday vs 3Hbabbies?
Also it's kind of funny how Fatesfags are seen to be alright, but maybe it's because BRfags and Revfags don't actually exist.
Correct. I only played Conquest, it's my favorite FE, but some of the older games have cool gameplay too like FE6 hard mode, radiant dawn and FE12 reverse lunatic.
Awakening fans started out ok and then slowly morphed into entitled gays who thought it was peak and refused to play any of the old games. The early shilling in Heroes was also annoying until they got humbled by CYL.
3Hfags were insufferable from the start because of the different routes (which most people only plated one of) and morally gray lead characters that were magnets for twitter cancer.
I only played one route. I quite enjoyed it. The early game in maddening is such a pain, I'm not sure I'm ready for another oute yet.
>Awakening
The discussion ended with Nostaking and Eugenics, some people tried dabbing some plan to Lunatic+ but it was quickly understood that it was a futile effort and it was just a roll on the dice
>Fates
Conquest got discussed to death with almost every possible gameplay variant being accounted for in a feat of autism, Revelations was rightfully ridiculed and Birthright was memoryholed aside from Ryoma memes.
>3H
We lasted 10 seconds to notice that the game was broken, and even with the Madenning update it was only hard in early game... except for Reunion at Dawn, Edelgard's Death Room and Funeral of Flowers but we also found cheese strategies for those (but are boring).
Engage has been more interesting because we still haven't solved the game and there's to many variables to be something that will be reached soon also the:
>you didn't beat the game memes
being actually funny
>Edelgard's Death Room
Are you referring to the throne room on the golden deer route? If so, it's fitting. What a roadblock, holy shit.
>Edelgard's Death Room
the last map for blue lions?
3h is worse.
Awakening babies were often there for waifus and fanservice but some of them would branch off or assimilate or enjoy older games.
Three houses is the game that's brought in fags who say things like
>nobody plays fe games for the gameplay
>all fe games are bad
and start threads entirely devoted to their waifu and discussion about whether she did anything wrong, that never so much as touch on the games or mechanics.
Many of them have no love for these sorts of games, they just picked up three houses because it embarassed them the least out of the rest and seemed like other games they liked.
I don't think any other group came in and then demanded fire emblem and the community around it assimilate to them, awakeningbabies were a little like that, some of them were smug about being the future of the series and whatnot, but it was nowhere near this level.
Now that you mention it, this is the worst the fanbase has felt split like this since awakening.
>and start threads entirely devoted to their waifu and discussion about whether she did anything wrong, that never so much as touch on the games or mechanics.
you could have just said edeltards, anon. as I dimitrichad I played gaiden, the gba games, and awakening.
>you could have just said edeltards
That is technically exactly who I meant, but I didn't want to get into the dumb three houses tribalism conversation.
>Who was worse between Awakeningbabbies back in their heyday vs 3Hbabbies?
You very obviously weren't here when Awakening was released if you even think there's any competition there.
Awakening discussion was good and is still pretty good.
The worst community is 3H by a landslide, followed by FE7 (whose only modes seem to be going full apologist while shitting on every other FE game, or spamming Lyn pics). I have never seen threads as inflammatory as those populated by Edelgard apologists vs Edelgard haters.
Edge-lord is singly the best prat character in the entire franchise
Wtf!!!??!!! I typed worst and BEST came out. I hate that disgusting toothpick blonde chud. Why did my fingers trick me?
Yeah, although a flawed series. I hate how pointless the permadeath is although it could have been one of the most interesting mechanics.
It's only pointless because they've been leaning off of it to cater to casuals since awakening, arguably before.
Fire Emblem games still feel best if you play them with deaths mattering, as much as they try to hide the mechanic in shame.
I want an unapologetically fire emblem game, fuck people who don't like fire emblem, they can get their own games.
>death mattering
Anon that's Advance Wars
>deaths mattering
>in the series where deaths are basically measured purely in unit cost where you throw waves of units at the enemy to capture a single city
Ah yes, I too never played advance wars.
Advance wars is a lot like chess, you just trade deaths off for gains, saying deaths matter in AW is the most stupid thing I've read in a week.
People dont reset after deaths in Advance Wars however, therefore, deaths in Advance Wars matter more
You're a good comedian.
Deaths matter so little in advance wars that they are just expected and come with the territory, ideally we'd have a middle ground where deaths are sort of expected but irregular and something that changes your run and needs to be moved on from.
There are only a handful of games worth playing and to start off with:
>Sacred Stones
>Fire Emblem (the OG first one)
>3 Houses
>Awakenings
That’s a good starting point for you.
For anyone looking to get into Fire Emblem: Similar to Final Fantasy, the games stories are generally self contained. Here are some suggestions for a first game
>Good picks
Fire Emblem GBA (FE7, Rekka no Ken). The first game released in the west, has a mandatory tutorial, good characters, cool sprite art.
FE9 Path of Radience (GC), Ike's game, fairly easy and one of the better stories
>OK picks
FE8 Sacred Stones (GBA), basically proto-Awakening. Actually pretty good but see below.
FE Awakening (3DS), a lot of newbies first FE game, has infinite grinding and is generally super easy, until you pick Lunatic(+) and it becomes cancer. Is also the first game with an emphasis on self insert romance if that's your thing.
>Bad picks
Shadow Dragon (DS), Remake of Marth's game, come back to this later
FE Echoes (3DS), Remake of FE2, I personally like it but its gameplay is very different from most of the series, has the best overall presentation IMO
FE 4/5 Genealogy/Thracia, peak Kaga jank kino, has its own merits but it's obtuse as hell
FE6 Binding Blade (GBA), Roy's game, very bare bones and hard as a first game
FE10 Radiant Dawn, sequel to FE9, play it after that game
FE Fates (3DS), gameplay wise a step up from Awakening, Story wise it's absolute dogshit, has 2 main routes with the third true route being DLC and also horribly balanced.
FE 3 Houses, decent story and characters, has 4 routes to choose, it will take you forever to clear one because of the Persona shit in between each level.
>Misc
FE Heroes, mobile fanservice gacha game, DO NOT (t. whale)
FE Warriors, Dynasty Warriors type game
FE 3 Hopes, Warriors game based solely on 3H
#FE We don't talk about #FE
>puts the OG and 3 Houses in “bad”
Kys disgusting chud
>3 Houses in “bad”
Nothing wrong with that. It's true.
They're bad as a starting point.
As starting points? Yes, absolutely.
Forgot to add:
ENGAGE, the new hotness, an anniversary celebration of the franchise, mixed reviews but solid gameplay, play more games first.
>Is fire emblem worth getting into?
The gameplay is fun, the series probably being the only one I actually enjoy replaying except for an occasional run of Divinity 2 and Flying Princess Interbreed, and I love the characters (and the sheer amount of porn there is of them). Give Awakening or Conquest (on normal difficulty) a try if you want to check it out, as those are the most newplayer-friendly games in my opinion.
>balance everyone having shit resistance with the fact that thieves can steal tomes right out the nerds' hands
I want to get off Kaga's wild ride
I love steal in Thracia. Although mrrging res and mag still doesn't make much sense to me.
I like it because it makes barrier and holy waters actually useful by turning them into offensive tools
Is there any Fire Emblem where you can get a e-boiwife?
Awakening (Nowi, Nah), Fates (Elise, Sakura, Midoriko), and Engage (Veyle, Anna)
>awakening
I married Lissa and used those handle bars until I was completely dry.
Holy based. That the perfect use for those twintails.
I want to punish this uppity princess.
Pounding Chrom's little sister tight body and taking her for your own exclusive use!!
Me too bro…. Me too
You know what’s even better. Making that uppity little “princess” punish this little whore and having you join in
Is it bad i married this bitch because i wanted to be Chrom's in law?
>First playthrough of Awakening
>Marry Miriel because I'm dumb and the pair-up bonuses were good
>Feel bad after a few chapters, not really caring for the mage, and promptly start a new file just to S-rank Lissa
Years later, despite loving Miriel as a unit and a character, I still think I made the right choice
You did indeed. I did the same thing unironically
I married for magic pair up bonuses my first run, ended up regretting it completely when Gen 2 showed up.
I always make sure to marry best girl when I replay the game now.
3H makes you wait till the very end of the game. Wtf were they thinking? Making me wait 60 hours to pound Annette… bastards
>canonically has a fatass
And that's a good thing.
the games are okay, but each game tends to differ from the next. Try FE7/8, and if you like either just continue in whatever order. The more recent games put a heavier emphasis on using class swapping/skill inheritance to min-max characters like a DnD game.
Kneel to the queen of the fire emblem, gays
And?
based
Nakadashi a 17-year-old princess and making her bear the heirs of a commoner!
FE7(The one in OP pic) is probably the best starting point for a new fan. Has a built-in tutorial, and is of fair difficulty; not too hard nor too easy.
Three Houses, though popular with the mainstream crowd, is absolutely the worst game to start with if you want to get into the series. It is a major divergence from the usual fanfare of Fire Emblem(same can be said for Gaiden/Echoes, but to a lesser degree)
Most of the older games can be easily pirated, so have fun with that.
If/when you play one of the games, this site is a good general resource for all Fire Emblem games. https://serenesforest.net/
>Is fire emblem worth getting into?
You can if you want, but I don't think you are missing much if you avoid them. There's better turn-based tactical RPGs out there, leveling or no. Adding in the weapon triangle (swords beat axes beat lances beat swords) gives it more of a strategy angle, but there are games which do that better too.
Other people have answered which ones are best to start with. It's probably a good idea to just grab one, especially if emulating since you don't worry about losing money on it.
>Fire emblems the tactical RPG where you send units around and levelupsare semi-random, right?
Yes, it's the one where you have a random chance at stats on level up. You could end up with +1 everything, or with getting no stats. Although to be specific, every character has a set chance to level up each stat so it's not fully random. (one character will frequently level STR, one will frequently level SPD, and so on)
>There's better turn-based tactical RPGs out there, leveling or no.
Like what?
Say what you mean, don't just tack this onto your post to try and look cooler.
Final Fantasy Tactics (all of them) or Tactics Ogre if you want the more RPG aspect, X-Com and Phoenix Point come to mind if you prefer the forced-into-next battle aspect. As I said, the weapon triangle is really the one thing missing from those games, and the one thing that Fire Emblem does different.
Advance Wars (and similar games) basically use something similar to a weapon triangle, although at a larger scale and unit cost becoming a factor. However, it gives up on the characters by having you build/recruit generic units, with the commanders being the characters instead.
Matsuno's novels suck, it's story first - gameplay second. Play Sting Entertainment games if want good RPG building while being extremely unique.
>fft
>move guy behind another guy and press the instant kill button
lol
you know, you could have just held your peace, but you just had to admit you didn't play past the tutorial in the most demented way possible.
no go ahead and tell me how amazing of a strategy game ffta is and how the only stat that matters isnt speed
>no go ahead and tell me how amazing of a strategy game fe is and how the only stat that matters isnt avoid
the real height of intelligence from this specimen. dunno why you brought ffta up either.
>Final Fantasy Tactics (all of them)
try reading posts before replying to them
also says nothing about how fucking slow it is to anything in every one of those games and every encounter is just "kill everything with your broken ass units" i like fft, which is why i know exactly how fucking retarded it is to compare it to fire emblem
>try reading posts before replying to them
clearly you haven't, because generalizing retard that you are, (you) replied to 2 posts and conflated 1 for the other.
>and every encounter is just "kill everything with your broken ass units"
even if this were the case, retard-kun, nearly every other fe pre-awakening is like this. all the games post-awakening are like this. there's no shortage of broken units in fe; especially not as of late.
>WELL THAT'S NOT ME ANYWAY
i know
>all the games post-awakening are like this
you dont play fire emblem
this is the last (you) you're getting from me
>nearly every other fe pre-awakening is like this
Only in the shitty ones like 4.
>Lumping all these games together just because they fall under the same concept of genre nomenclature.
You might as well argue that mario kart is a better driving game than Ridge Racer at that point. Just comparing FFT and Ogre with FE like this with no common ground makes you sound like a retard.
>Like what?
>Say what you mean, don't just tack this onto your post to try and look cooler.
nta but you've got fft for more rpg stuff, x-com and brigandine for more strategic map oriented stuff, and battle for wesnoth, advance wars, and symphony of war for army building affairs.
>brigandine
Looks interesting. Should I go for the ps1 original or Runersia?
Start with either the DS games or Awakening onward. The lack of being able to see every enemies attack radius makes the older games feel very dated.
You can mod Thracia and the GBA games to let you see them.
I know you can for GBA but link to the Thracia one?
Lil' Manster patch.
https://forums.serenesforest.net/index.php?/topic/90189-fe5-lil-manster-%E2%80%93-translation-and-quality-of-life-patch-for-thracia-776/
The fuck? I do have Lil Manster and I never even noticed there was a way to view global ranges.
Idk, it has global display and AI ranges built in.
Play romhacks (after you beat the base GBA games of course)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f1y1jgccqw9kyrt/FE%20Romhacks%20v2.0.zip?dl=0
what kind of fucking FE hack inforgraph is this when it doesn't even have GHEB quest.
his schmexyness would need an entire infograph for himself
play better SRPG isntead
>Fire Emblem 7 was the entry point in the west
>Awakening was the returning point
Choose the entry point.
>Should I just play all the games from the beginning?
start with engage
then do awakening -> fates
or path of radiance -> radiant dawn
or three houses
Alright but which game has the best story? Fuck combat.
None of them have a good story. Play Xenoblade or FFT if you want story. What makes FE work is raw gameplay.
Bro no once cares about tic tac toe with sword and bow animations. Give me a story.
I love the story and cast of three houses. Go with that, pick blue lions.
>pick blue lions
I already picked the female because I figured she would give me sex if I was persistent, even if she is about 60 years old with those grey hairs.
thats good too. They're all good really.
Go read a book gay
Go look at a red and blue tile expo you banana.
Post characters that IS should bring back.
How will they.
Awakening remake.
Hopefully with those improved 3D models they show off her big, firm bubble butt.
Fuck you guys, now I wanna play Awakening again
I'm actually considering doing a new run with with https://gamebanana.com/mods/368592
Nice.
Hopefully none.
Having Owain, Inigo and Severa (plus the reincarnated kids) in Fates was distracting as fuck.
Unless IS's making a direct sequel to a previous game, I'd rather not have any characters return.
Now post the best song.
if you have to ask you're obviously not that interested
The stupidest post on Ganker right now.
Post your best Dorcas.
I had a tremendous Lot once. Wade's so bad that he drags Lot's reputation down by proxy but he usually puts in work, especially on those aid early hard mode chapters
A question to you Cynthiafags. How do you feel about her recruitment Paralogue?
I don't care for the set-up. Cynthia is clumsy and naive, sure, but her traveling with bandits just feels like too much of a stretch for how she's otherwise written. It reminds me of Fir's recruitment in 6, to the point where it almost feels like an intentional call back, but Fir's situation had more thought put into it even if they both end up working with bandits out of naivety. It feels like a really weak introduction to the character, and is even more baffling if you have her as Chrom's daughter (which is likely as the game does push the player towards pairing him with Sumia).
Would have been better if she just came across the battle and mistook the Chrom impersonator for the real deal on the spot. Would fit better with her gung-ho, quixotic behavior.
