but if the gameplay is good and you skip all the cutscenes, its similar to a game that has no story at all. would that be a flaw?

A long game based around completing objectives that has story to fill in the gaps and provide context and outline objectives would be objectively worse off without those things

I've been playing Randomizer of this game recently and while there are a few moments that require setting up flags (beast castle or twilight town to name some examples) it is a surprisingly fast and well paced action game without any cutscenes. The bigger time and pacing save would be the skipping the gummi missions as well, since the Randomizer sets it up where you can easily access every world through doors. I'm neutral about the Gummi stuff but I can see how it can really drag the pacing down of the base game.

A game can be fine with no story, but a game that relies fairly heavily on the story might feel odd if it's completely removed.

I liked KH1 when it released, although it was pushing the limit of how much story I want in a game. When I played KH2 I just felt bored and confused. I remember the gameplay being okay but the story was making the overall experience less enjoyable for me. And you aren't going to know that until you try getting involved with it for a while which is going to make the game feel flawed even if you could've skipped it.

you could argue that the objective story of the game is bad, but the vibes of the scenes are immaculate and direction and music really do a lot for the presentation. The opening hours of this game have something more authentic than most modern AAA games

Yes. Not for 2 specifically, but 3s shitty story led to shitty boring bosses. When you withhold the actual fun boss fights for a gauntlet at the end BECAUSE of the story, then yes bad story is a flaw

Also, What would Kingdom Hearts have been like past the first entry, had Square refused to merge with Enix?

Kingdom Hearts past 2 is still kino.

2 is where it should have been put to rest. The series is starting to show its age, just as Megaman (at least with the robotics timeline) with x6 and especially with X7 did.

KH has a GOOD story if you're looking at it through the intended lens. Which is to give young kids a simple understanding of complex emotional concepts conveyed through a fantastical dreamlike setting and over the top comedic characters while combining hundreds of separate works with different themes and tones. It's actually a miracle KH 1 and 2 are as tightly written as they are . I'd like to see anyone do it better.

I'm playing KH2 Final Mix on PS3 rn. I chose it as my first KH because it had Stitch & Chicken Little. So far this has been one of the most boring games I've played but I just made it to the Final Fantasy Village with Scrooge McDuck and Tifa so hopefully things will pick up from there!

To answer your question, it depends but for a story driven game like KH2 it does matter. It's like saying the the drink doesn't matter if the food is good at a bar.

True but it gets bonus points for being shit when the english version for some reason is worse than the japanese one. Idk what the frick they did when they ported it

It's mostly because it was a BD game that had no install option.

its even worse because loading times affect drive forms, so you have to pause the game or your drive gauge just ticks down while it loads

Programming and creative writing don't have much overlap, at most devs can ape movies they like but that's it. Even if you were to hire professional writers you still have to write a story around the gameplay (limiting its scope by a ton, especially since a lot of big games are action games, so everything needs to be solved with violence, you need a final boss etc.), and you need to have that story being palatable for big audiences (which includes kids and teenagers).
If you take any game that is considered to have a "good story" and put that on the big screen it would get laughed out of theaters, but games get a pass since the bar is set super low.

I will actually argue that 2 doesn't have a bad story. It has a story filled with really dumb moments and a giant retcon of something from the first game, but I wouldn't say it's actually poorly written. Things are properly set up and then payoff happens later (unlike every game in the series after this one, KH2 wraps up everything that starts in CoM/KH2 and the story can end right there with no issues as long as we ignore the secret ending). Characters don't suddenly veer into acting out of character. Things that are explained don't require massive leaps of logic, at best you'll say, "oh, that makes sense" and leave it at that.

The actual problem with KH2 is it has bad dialog, everyone talks in a stilted way that doesn't feel natural, and no this isn't just bad localization, it's that way in Japanese too.

      >ps3 version
Jesus christ man, play the PS4 or PC version if you're not gonna emulate, the PS3 version's load times are inexcusable.
      >but I just made it to the Final Fantasy Village with Scrooge McDuck and Tifa
You're literally 1% of the way into the game.

Also something I forgot to mention, KH2 is an internally consistent game. It never breaks its own rules, if something is established in KH2 then nothing in KH2 itself says "aha but that's not REALLY how it works", it's retcons in later games that did that.

I skip the cutscenes in almost every game that allows me to do so and I never feel I'm missing out. I like games to have a bare bit of story to set the scene and tone of what it's about and then have the game be the meat of the experience.

If the game is good, then yes it's fine. Sadly this was not the case with KHII and it's Final Mix update didn't make it that much better.

if a game is trying to tell a story, you should should count it as a flaw if it is bad
