I like his compositions in games, he has some nice melodic patterns. Too bad social media doesn't take this music seriously.

His compositions are very reminiscent of baroque-era composers such as Bach and Pachalbel, which I believe he himself even said were some of his inspirations for his composing style. You can hear the similarities clearly in the Gen 1 soundtrack. Masuda's composing style is very melody-focused and up-front. There's always a line that he wants the listener to focus on. Newer Pokémon soundtrack composers such as Go Ichinose have a more sporadic style as opposed to Masuda's more stable style. I don't think any of these different styles are good or bad, but I would say that the early Pokémon soundtrack is only as popular as it is due to Masuda's way of composing that makes it easy to listen to and very memorable.

Based musicchad, what's your favorite piece of music? Mines is Route 212.

From Masuda? Probably the Johto trainer battle theme. The uniquely long length of the piece really highlights Masuda's composition skills as it allows for a lot more freedom and expression and movement. You can hear all the key changes and transitions so clearly and each section is so distinct yet it all flows together really well because there was enough time in the piece to allow for that.

Yes, but still doesn't change the fact he was a highschool dropout who luckied out his way to stardom. Basicaly, he was a music composer made game director because he had so much dirt on everyone that they couldn't tell him 'No'. Even now they can't fire him, so they give him a promotion in a glorified retirement position where he is overpaid to do nothing.

If you actually look up Masuda's story, it is basically the Wolf of Akihabara Street.

It's sad Nintendo is so powerful and managed to slip it under the rug to this day.

He spun straw into gold in Gen 1 and Gen 2. Go back and compare the track from the Game boy Pokemon games to most other games and you'll hear that they're anywhere form 20 to 40 seconds longer, and have a much more complex melody and arrangement. There's probably a parallel universe where Masuda took on the role of composer to the Pokemon series the way Koji Kondo did for Mario and Zelda and would be thought of only as a hard worker, instead of "that guy who ruined Pokemon."

He's completely seriously one of the better composers that the franchise has had.

And not that he didn't work to get into leadership at Game Freak, but I kind of wish someone else had been doing that instead, while he just focused on composing.

    He's really really good.
Most game composers back then looked at chips with simple pulse and triangle waves and said "hurr dats a synthesizer, arpeggio go brrrrrr". Masuda isn't the only one that took the limitations as a challenge and used it to make actual music with intelligent use of harmony and form, there are some others like Totaka, but they're not plentiful either.

    Mt. Coronet? His masterpiece...

That steady escalation while you climb up the mountain
    Subtle sense of dread
    The piano!
Perfect de-escalation and loop back around to the start of the song

This is always my favorite part of a gen 4 playthrough. Those games definitely have flaws, but it's amazing to me how well-paced and how atmospheric they are, and how well the music enhances the experience.

One of the best tracks ever written for a Pokémon game.

This was composed by Ichinose-san though.
Masuda-san mostly composed the battle themes starting the generation 3 games (when he got promoted to director).

Yeah. He did the entire Gen 1 soundtrack, then starting with Gen 2 he did all the battle themes and routes except the Kanto Wild Battle and Kanto Trainer Battle. Actually I think most of the Kanto soundtrack was done by others, except the Gym Leader theme which he remixed himself. I also know he did none of the towns in Gen 2 except New Bark Town. Then in Gen 3/4/5 it was just battle themes. Don't know about Gen 6+.

He composed Cherrygrove City and contributed to the Lavender Town remix too. GSC were the last games where he did compose most of the soundtrack, but most of the towns were delegated to Ichinose-san indeed.
Also the Kanto Gym Leader remix is a fricking banger. I wish Masuda-san would have stayed mainly a composer, that's the role where he shines the most, but it's hard to be the main composer of a game while overseeing all the production when you're the director.
