As far as Japan is concerned Eliwood is just a shitty version of Roy. Most would argue that Eliwood is better as a unit but Roy is also in a harder game and the Binding Blade makes him genuinely OP, plus he gets to style on Idunn at the end. Meanwhile, Durandal is fine and all, but it's not that broken outside of the Fire Dragon fight, and even then he doesn't do much better than Hector or Athos.
Durandal is way too heavy to be a decent weapon. Eliwood is sometimes remembered as the lord that gets crippled by his own prf weapon because of that. Not that the sol katti is much better.

Besides, she isn't that bad. I wish she had more availability, but she does have a very nice niche as glass canon that will hit no matter what. You can play on the highest difficulty and she'll still have 100 hit on all enemies and oneshot things with thani. That's way better than rapier users being at disadvantage while trying to kill generals with their wet noodle.

The 3DS Avatars starting with Robin did have their own character since they literally had their own personalities and set dialogue with characters in their supports. They just didn't have voices because the 3DS didn't have voices at all. Equip Alear with Roy, and you'll survive every turn so long as you get healed above the 30% max hp for Hold Out.
I put Alear hugging the wall to bait her since she'll go for Luin, then put Jade and Louis around her to keep her fully boxed in so that she'll just be stuck in place, can take your time with it then.

Skirmishes don't level with Alear, Skirmishes level off of the average of your highest level units (with a couple extra levels on higher difficulties).
Note: There are training levels where units don't die even if they're killed and any unit who participates gets EXP at the end, even if they didn't kill anyone. Unfortunately, they spawn randomly and you just have to hope one shows up.

Fire Emblem games have always struggled with how to balance grinding. Some games just don't balance or don't let you do it. Games like Awakening or SS limited it with weapon durability, so grinding cost money. I think the idea was that in Engage they'd let you grind infinitely, but they didn't want to make it too easy, so they made the free grinding levels far more difficult than 90% of the stages in the game playing normally because every enemy is 5 levels higher than you and spawns with the best weapons in the game. It's a pretty stupid way to balance things but that's how they did it.
I do not ge how devs find it hard to balance grinding in this age for single player games. Who gives a shit if some ass clown instantly works to get Alear lv20 by chapter 5. 98% of players aren't that stupid, desperate, or shit.
I do not at all recall struggling with grinding in Awakening at all because all the skirmishes...or whatever that game called them...also dropped like 2-4k gold pretty sure. So you could keep your lower guys up, build up unity, and buy a weapon or two to replace whatever became most dire. It was perfectly fine. You can grind indefinitely in Awakening even as the bonus/extra fights just keep respawning endlessly.
I do not fricking get how Int Sys fricked up this terribly by just killing weapon durability.

You might be forgetting that skirmishes in Awakening on Lunatic were pretty much the same. Enemies way overleveled with multiple forged weapons and the usual Lunatic bullshit skills. Enemies have bloated stats so they take forever to kill and on top of that they added EXP decay as an extra frick you.

The 3DS Avatars starting with Robin did have their own character since they literally had their own personalities and set dialogue with characters in their supports. They just didn't have voices because the 3DS didn't have voices at all. The Switch Avatars starting with Byleth did regress with Byleth literally having no voice and all dialogue being chosen by (You), but they've since dialed it back with Shez and Alear by actually giving them voices and set dialogue again.

They did do this with Awakening. Robin had different dialogue with some characters depending on whether Robin was male or female.

Skirmishes don't level with Alear, Skirmishes level off of the average of your highest level units (with a couple extra levels on higher difficulties).
Note: There are training levels where units don't die even if they're killed and any unit who participates gets EXP at the end, even if they didn't kill anyone. Unfortunately, they spawn randomly and you just have to hope one shows up.

I do not ge how devs find it hard to balance grinding in this age for single player games. Who gives a shit if some ass clown instantly works to get Alear lv20 by chapter 5. 98% of players aren't that stupid, desperate, or shit.
I do not at all recall struggling with grinding in Awakening at all because all the skirmishes...or whatever that game called them...also dropped like 2-4k gold pretty sure. So you could keep your lower guys up, build up unity, and buy a weapon or two to replace whatever became most dire. It was perfectly fine. You can grind indefinitely in Awakening even as the bonus/extra fights just keep respawning endlessly.
I do not fricking get how Int Sys fricked up this terribly by just killing weapon durability.

They want it to be possible but not easy, which is a really hard balance to find. I think they fricked it up badly in Engage because if a unit falls behind a couple levels it's basically done and there's no way to level it back up that doesn't involve a lot of resetting. They fricked it up the other way in awakening by making it too easy.

The more times you attack an enemy, the less EXP you get, and this factors into EXP from kills, which just make skirmishes a fruitless exercise.

You might be forgetting that skirmishes in Awakening on Lunatic were pretty much the same. Enemies way overleveled with multiple forged weapons and the usual Lunatic bullshit skills. Enemies have bloated stats so they take forever to kill and on top of that they added EXP decay as an extra frick you.

Fire Emblem games have always struggled with how to balance grinding. Some games just don't balance or don't let you do it. Games like Awakening or SS limited it with weapon durability, so grinding cost money. I think the idea was that in Engage they'd let you grind infinitely, but they didn't want to make it too easy, so they made the free grinding levels far more difficult than 90% of the stages in the game playing normally because every enemy is 5 levels higher than you and spawns with the best weapons in the game. It's a pretty stupid way to balance things but that's how they did it.
why is Engage so israeli with money? It feels like a completely unnecessary burden.

1 - It's like a traditional Fire Emblem where spending money actually matters as it's not a common commodity
2 - They don't want you breaking the forging system over your knee by having ridiculous weapons so they encourage you to donate the little money you get as a form of balance
3 - They'll have a Gold and EXP DLC map so you can farm all you want.
With how stingy they are with SP and gold I'm 100% expecting DLC grinding maps.
