Is there something in between open world and linear?
For example, I like skyrim as open world and think it's great. Random encounters and npc that interact but are not necessarily crucial for the story, helped the world feel more alive.
But for elden ring, the open world felt too empty at times. There were large chunks that felt didn't really need to be there. I think if ir was a bit more compact it would be better.
Something like the interconnected dark souls 1 map, but with more open areas, alternate pathways, and even more large locations/areas. So it feels like an open world but still interconnected. I think the legacy dungeons were the best areas. If they could all be made larger and interconnected, with maybe smaller Forrest or plains areas between them, ir would be better

If they are open world with very narrow paths like dark souls 1 or pokemon, they are fine, but if they are open worlds like BOTW, FaryCry 2, MGS5 then yes.
They take 10 times as many resources to make a big map, and the games end up being copy paste areas because its overwhelming to make.
