Looks like a... window button? What is it supposed to be? Also lol @ the American

Everyone knows that 3 lines is a menu. No, not a food menu either.

Cope. Blame american fastfood companies for trying to appropriate such a simple symbol.

Incidentally, also called a hamburger menu.

Not on that controller, it's called the...uh...

Well it was called "Back" on the first two generations of Xbox controllers.

Nintendo's replaced Start/Select with +/- for almost 20 years now. Surprised the 3DS still kept the former.

Official names are "overlay" and "menu" buttons but we still call them "select" and "start" because you'd have to dig in already a little bit to know the official names.

I thought hitting the big Xbox logo in the middle of the controller was the 'overlay.' Start to menu makes sense

I still call it the select button.
Sometimes there's a third button in-between start and select, but under the Xbox button. That's usually a screenshot button.

I hate the new button icons since the xbox one controller. The 360 controller start and back buttons were simple and easy to remember if a ui element says push button for whatever function.
But I always have to glance at the controller now to remember which icon is which because 3 horizontal lines and 2 boxes is such a moronic redesign of something that didnt need a redesign because it worked

I agree. Controllers could stand to have two more buttons like that

Deciated 'share' button is such a fricking waste. It should have been a modifier key.

Eg. Hold it + hit another button for some OS level function, otherwise it acts as a select button.

At least on a Dualshock it could have simply been the PS button (hold for OS, tap for screenshot). Xbox controller doesn't quite have the same headroom though.

what i don't get is why they didn't just call them start and back. what the frick was the point in making them options, share, two boxes, three lines and + -? what, for use in games?

I hate the modern UI/controls labelling shit where it's just random shapes and symbols instead of writing out in English what the fricking button is.

I don't translate these buttons into any words.
When I need to express to someone what they're called, I just say "press that weird button on the left" or something like that, I refuse to learn their real names or try to translate their symbols into words.
