If you like arena combat against waves of dozens of enemies while you run around and try not to get overwhelmed, it's one of the best. If you want story or puzzles or complex levels or anything other than blasting enemies you'll be sad. The maps were impressively big and open for the time, but I don't think that would impress a new player anymore.

Yes, and I prefer original over HD - it has better movement, and you can do more silly things like jumping on gnaar's head and killing the entire pack with a knife. HD has better gore tho.

      Anonymous

I'm pretty sure I had no issues knifing down entire Kleer hordes in HD, but I also prefer the original

        Anonymous

HD/Fusion still hasn't fixed charging enemies (kleer, werebulls, pumpkins) from turning on a dime instead of running past you normally when you side step them. That alone makes the HD versions immensely harder than the classics when they shouldn't be. Also the red demon's fireballs not getting destroyed upon impacting most surfaces really fucks things up because they'll swoop back around and hit you even though you dodged them properly the first time.

Playing the classic games just makes me miss Kleers braking into a million pieces when you shotgun them.

Double barrel still breaks them in the classics. They only play the death animation if you kill them with a weak shot.

The original has no directional audio which is incredibly annoying when there's enemies spawning all around you

      Anonymous

It does have directional audio, it's just pretty bad compared to everything else. I think it has to do with some sounds being considered louder than they actually are or propagating too far, making it sound like something's closer to you than it really is (werebulls are the biggest example). But it's not absent from the game. With enough practice you can tell when an enemy gets alerted behind you and does an attack. Extremely important to learn when fighting kleers.

The classics require port forwarding if you want to host. You can use Fusion for the HD versions and 3 because it uses Steam for hosting. They're all not very populated, you would have a better chance of playing with people if you scheduled an event.

100% agreed and vidya would be improved if more players were more tolerant of bugs. Not "the game keeps crashing and deleted my save" bugs, but "my character got stuck and I had to reload a checkpoint" bugs.

            Anonymous

Before someone jumps on me I'm not saying bugs are good, but sometimes it's the price you pay for being ambitious and experimental and giving the player freedom. If you lock everything down perfectly you can end up removing interesting situations too. An occasional hiccup should be tolerable, emphasis on occasional.

So, any opinions about Croteam dropping their Serious Engine for Unreal for Talos 2 and potentially their next games?

      Anonymous

I just wished that the version used for 4 wasn't so rushed. If they can achieve the same amount of enemies per battle on Unreal as they could in the past games then I won't mind.

      Anonymous

For Talos Principle, whatever, but for Serious Sam there is still the problem that it is a horde-focused FPS so most likely they will have to do a lot of improvisation on the engines which will cause more pain and confusion. I don't think they will try to fix Serious Engine 4, however, they will probably wait until the computers are able to run them on a brute force basis.

When everything works, SS is the most satisfying shooter for my personal taste. But things almost never work, so fans of the series are used to constant disappointment and frustration.
There's no decent way to play the games these days. The modern ports to run the first two versions are not very good, they aren't even that modern anymore and have a lot of problems. Playing through Fusion solves compatibility problems, but you end up changing enemy behavior and original level design to the point where TFE and TSE become unplayable without mods that try to fix the problems.
Serious Sam 3 BFE, on the other hand, is much better when played through Fusion, in fact it becomes a very competent game, but it is still flawed because of the level and enemy.
Serious Sam 4 is a complete disaster. It fixes several design flaws from SS3, but the poor engine that doesn't run well on any PC in the world + a total unbalance caused by a plethora of gimmicks that have no place in the game made it a joke that will probably never be fixed.
Still, SS has "epic" moments, really good music (the composer is genius), and a pretty steep difficulty curve. When everything works, it is the perfect FPS for my personal taste. But 99% of the time almost nothing works,

      Anonymous

3 is honestly best played in VR.
It's almost the same case as with Doom 3 where it feels like as if the game was actually made with it in mind due to the slower pace and downtime moments and especially the dreaded tombs and underground sections become way more atmospheric and enjoyable.

The classic versions run completely fine and are my preferred way of playing TFE/TSE. You can make them even better with this classics patch that adds better resolution/fov support, hud scaling, and more.
Also you should really play Siberian Mayhem if you haven't already. It's well worth it.

        Anonymous

I can't play TFE and TSE with either the original versions or with Classic Revolution. I will check this link...
About Siberian Mayhem, it can't escape the problems added by SS4 that make any balance impossible. I liked the first two levels, playing without gimmicks/skills, the third level is so-so, but the fourth and fifth levels are basically SS4 all over again.
For me the best modern experience so far was SS3 BFE Enhanced (mod), which makes SS3 much better, but also with its share of problems. But compared to SS4 at least it is something relatively solid and balanced (SS4 is basically a game made by modders with no consideration other than adding "cool shit").
About SS4, there is a specific modder making good levels where he basically ignores all the gimmicks/skills and concentrates only on the core gameplay. He made Final Solstice and one more new map that is not that good.

          >I can't play TFE and TSE with either the original versions

            Anonymous

Actually, I think SS4 has salvation. Someone would just need to create a campaign where they ignore ALL the gimmicks, ALL the skiltree completely, some weapon extensions and some weapons entirely and build interesting battles using only the basic game elements. My favorite SS4 battle is that one from Final Solstice that does more or less that. I even created a guide with a good strategy for it:

The mouse movements apparently don't keep up with the frame rate, so the game may be running perfectly smooth, but when I move the mouse, it seems to be at a rather low frame rate. Also, in certain parts the frame rate gets horrible such as when you enter that first TSE lava cave.

              >The mouse movements apparently don't keep up with the frame rate, so the game may be running perfectly smooth, but when I move the mouse, it seems to be at a rather low frame rate.
Are you on windows? Sounds like it might be an issue with the DPI settings because I've never encountered that problem before. The mouse runs fine for me nor have I heard others complain about this exact issue.

The drones are fun to fight but they hardly use harpies along with them. It feels like they're kept separate from each other.

                >Not something I pay attention to
Enemies having specific and very notable/memorable sounds is like one of the cornerstones of the series' game design.
The moment you hear some grunting you'll immediately look up and in the distance to see if there are any Reptiloids, when you hear skrreeeee-ing you know Arachnoids are not far away (well, sometimes they are), when you hear clopping then either some fucking brony is in your home or a Kleer coming around the corner, and so on.

That's what I said yeah, they should've used some audio clue for them.

One thing I did notice is that in SS3 Khnums had a VERY distinct casting sound. You heard a loud CRACK and you knew a bunch of instakill fireballs is heading your way. In SS4 they're pretty much silent. There was a mod I played, Howling Mountain. It's really easy until the final battle, when suddenly it's not. Like 90% of my deaths in that battle was because I was running and hand no idea a Khnum was attacking me.

I really love the weapon roster in 4/SM, but one thing that has always bothered me about it the minigun and lasergun taking up the same exact role when in the past games they didn't. These two are power weapons with relatively same damage but for different roles. The minigun has wind up so it's better used for sustained fire. The lasergun is instant and has consistent damage, so you can use it more freely and tap fire to save ammo. The minigun has spread and doesn't have 100% accuracy like the laser gun, but it's hitscan instead of being a projectile. So they both have pros and cons.
Then 4 comes along and gives the lasergun a heatup mechanic where the longer you fire the more damage it does, essentially moving it into the same role as the minigun because you're not getting the most out of it if you don't sustain fire. But the lasergun still has its 100% accuracy making it basically an upgrade over the minigun at this point. Don't get me started on the deathray alt fire.
On TOP of this, SM introduces the burner which while it is an amazing weapon to use just exacerbates the problem of these two weapons. Burner requires windup just like the minigun, but it's 100% accurate and benefits from sustained fire because enemies explode when they die by the burner. To kick the minigun while it's down the burner is still 100% accurate when dual wielding, unlike the minigun. So there's no reason to NOT dual wield it because it doubles your damage with no downsides.
Game is still fun though and at the end of the day they're both tools to kill hordes of enemies with. I just wish they kept the contrasts between these weapons more apparent.

Classic Laser is just a worse minigun with larger ammo pool. HD Laser is just a worse minigun. SS3 Laser is a secret. SS4 Laser is a terrifying weapon of mass destruction which deals 1.5 times the DPS minigun does, 2 times more when overheating and can be dual-wielded without accuracy loss. And THEN, on top of that, you get Death Ray which is completely and utterly ludicrous and I love it.

Not really, just play the classic versions.

I prefer Kamikazes. Kleers are cool, too, but I hate how much they slide and bounce, at least in HD. I can't remember if the same is true in the original versions of TFE and TSE. Then in 3 and 4, they tend to blend in with their surroundings.

The slide issue is only present in the HD versions. In the classics you can properly sidestep them.

I feel the same way about the sniper and devastator. The weapon set is almost perfect, they just need to buff away a couple imperfections.

        Anonymous

Oh yeah, the sniper and devastator have the same issue. There is no reason to use the sniper once you get the devastator, unless you run out of ammo. They deal the same amount of damage but the devastator has so much more going for it (bigger mag, explosive, piercing). I think what they should have done is left the scope off the devastator and only let the sniper have headshot capabilities.

              Anonymous

I mean, SS4 has like 20 guns. Some of them are going to get a bit redundant. You don't have Devastator until very late in the campaign and you get Sniper pretty early. I'll admit, out of Sniper/Devastator/Perun, I find Devastator easily the most satisfying. Tearing down big guys with it feels incredible.

The autoshotgun is weird. Weird because there just isn't much to talk about it. It's definitely fun to use, but I'm not sure I would miss the gun if it doesn't come back in future games. You can deal a ton of burst damage with it dual wielded, but it doesn't bring anything special to the serious sam table. It just exists.

It should've been a late-game upgrade to Devastator to make it use shotgun ammo. Or maybe not, given how powerful it is, especially with the reload perk.

this game is good and i'm tired of pretending that it isn't

The issues come from the fact that it's horribly rushed and built around the original xbox. When means you have at least 5-6 cut levels, the multiplayer is a mess lacking stability and content and the existing levels being shorter than the usual serious sam length. Oh and the cut levels haven't been brought back to this day.

  49. 3 weeks ago

The autoshotgun should've had a flak alt fire for damaging flying enemies. The minigun just needs to drop the accuracy loss and the sniper needs a increase to the headshot multiplier and firing speed to SS3's version.

      Anonymous

I don't mind minigun inaccuracy. minigun by design is a weapon against either big hordes of weak enemies or medium hordes of medium enemies. The inaccuracy helps shred weaklings at a distance easier (since you don't need pixel perfect aim), but prevents you from dumping every single bullet in a scrapjack's head across the map (so you might want to switch to Devastator instead).

Actually, to add on to this because I noticed TFE's levels are also reduced, they probably removed a bunch of broken and unused spawners from the classic levels when making the HD versions. These spawners are still taken into account when calculating the total amount of enemies, and the classics have a bunch of broken ones that don't trigger.

The first games had the right balance of tone and humor, but the later games made it apparent that this was only by accident (probably budget limitations). The more Croteam became able to do the more they would just completely jump the shark with the whole vibe of the game becoming in some regards way over the top and in other regards taking itself way too seriously.

I feel like the fans know what kind of Serious Sam game people want more than Croteam. That is an action game that takes itself and its enemies seriously enough that it still feels satisfying to kill while having a subtle constant sprinkling of humor, mostly in the form of one liners. But this alpha bravo team come in nonsense just doesn't fit, it should mostly just be sam and the aliens and minimal explicit story.

It would be interesting to see what a different development team would do with it. In my opinion, should focus less on gimmicks, more on managing hoards of enemies (would be awesome to have more giant enemies that you can see coming from a vast distance) while also having interesting indoor and platforming sections like the originals but add various mechanics like dodging, deflecting projectiles, perhaps integrate rocket jumping into the gameplay more (what if you cancel out damage from a rocket jump if you do enough damage while in the air?) that genuinely make the gameplay more deep without sacrificing the pace.
