Depending on which direction you went you're probably nearing the end if you're in life support (it's possible to go there early on, before the main plot takes you there)
Prey definitely does get a lot interesting after the first couple of hours. I started to lose interest around the time I reached the Arboretum.

I'm there because of the plot yeah, Alex the fat frick just closed the whole station down and I'm making my way to get his activation key. If I'm near the end I might just say frick it to the subquest and go for the main objective.
I'm playing without getting any Typhon powers, maybe that's a reason why I think the game kinda sucks? Every encounter is always the same: zap > GLOO > shoot thing.

        Anonymous

If you play combat focused you'll end up just stunning and blasting with a shotgun for 90% of the game. Going stealth focused or trying to sequence break is a lot more fun.

          Anonymous

that's the problem with the game, it's so easy to kill most enemies that I have no reason to go stealthy other than to feel immersed. I'm playing on hard with all the survival shit enabled, and I always have a lot of food, med packs and ammo. If the game was way harder it'd be much more fun.

          Anonymous

It's really not, as the level design rarely accommodates that and there are barely any mechanics for it.
Combat is fun if you use Typhon powers but morons look up guides and get concerned about a single line of dialogue changing in the ending (and also more justifiably getting targeted by turrets, but that also isn't that big of a deal)

The game should really emphasize it in some way, and its a spoiler when you go farther along, but frick it.

The typhon powers actually turn you into a powerhouse bully, to the point where certain machines and turrets will go after you and even a special boss enemy will start appearing.

The game is just fundamentally flawed in terms of engaging the player, because Arkane can't into im sims.

All solutions and paths are right next to each other and no skill choice you make is really impactful, because they aim their games at the normie audience, that's scared of committing to anyhting or to be locked.
The excessive handholding is not only ruining the game but the genre its trying to be part of.

But normies dont play im sims which is why the games keep flopping. If you dont appeal to normies and genre fans alike, whats left?
I hope Arkane goes bankrupt, because by now they had enough chances to get it right.

I think I still have to play an Arcane's game that I like. Dishonored is boring, Prey is borign and I'm not touching DeathPoop even if they pay me. Dark Messiah had cool combat tho, and I still have to play Dishonored 2 and Arx Fatalis. Hope at least the later is better.

Game gets boring as frick after the early hours of scrounging.
After that you are always topped up in resources to the point that if you don't have survival mode on(weapon durability, have to use items to heal injuries), you porbably have nothing to use them on.

I'm playing with all the survival shit turned on and it's still easy as piss.

You can stomp system shock 2 and every deus ex being a combat hacker.
You can destroy thief with smart use of the forward lean
This genre has always had plenty of faults and may never be done successfully. Does that matter to me? No, i still love them to death, prey especially.

That forward lean is absurdly broken though, also silent creeping on metal, combat knock outs, circle straife sword fighting. Thief in particular is super cheese heavy when you learn it

Isn't this the game where you're actually an alien all along just implanted with whats-his-names memories?
And part of that big twist is that Earth was already invaded and taken over by the aliens and this is basically a last ditch effort to save humanity, by making one of the aliens think they're a human so the human-that's-alien can fight aliens-thats-aliens

Yes, the game where you're set up to consider issues around your identity as you inject alien abilities and lose your memory, ignores all that and then ends with "surprise, you're actually an alien all along, nothing was real you were in a simulation"

The skills in all these games reward exploration and provide some level of replay value (at least in theory)
The problem is simply that they reward you too much outside of maybe SS2 on Nightmare. In Prey you get enough Neuromods to unlock like 75% of the available abilities and could theoretically unlock all of them if you wasted enough time killing respawning enemies

Game was barely decent at best for me. I love Deus Ex, Bioshock, even enjoyed the first Prey. This one was a fricking CHORE of a game to get through. At the start I didn't enjoy it because it was a bit confusing and very difficult. I had to watch a YouTube video on early game strategy, then the game just clicked for me. Throughout the middle section all the way through maybe the Shipping/Receiving mission I mostly enjoyed myself because I got the hang of crafting and resource management. Then on the back half of the game when you had to do all of the backtracking through the atrium and there was an onslaught of objectives spread out everywhere with enemies that outnumber you 5:1 the game was lost on me again.

Maybe it was because I never put much thought or effort into the skills tree but the game was a slog and a very unrewarding experience.

The game is just flawed, certain combat options are so broken that it's moronic. Sneaking and using the shotgun is broken good. The enemies overall are uninteresting and felt repetitive. Sure the mimics hiding was interesting, but the other enemies were bland overall. Yeah now the phantom being elemental still didn't make it much different compared to a base phantom. The two huge flying enemies felt similar in the way you fought them, there was just a blandness to them.

The climbing is nice and all but some parts of the game are laughably linear, like that neuto-whatever section that is basically a corridor with a second floor that barely had anything, and you couldn't do much exploration in it really.

The arsenal was disappointing, the gloo gun was entertaining, being able to climb with it was near but overall there are just too few weapons for a game that has a wonder-machine that can craft absolutely everything after you throw banana peels and tin cans inside it. Yeah yeah sure they blocked some blueprints, as if hacking the wonder machines is beyond the possibilities and so on. That's one of the problems of having those ultra high tech machines, I start wondering why can't the protag just hack this fricking shit to be able to craft a bazooka and a sniper rifle? The muh blocked blueprints sounds like a lame cop out,an excuse for having a pathetic arsenal.

There were some nice ideas, like shooting with the nerf guns at screens, but the game just left me wishing it was better than it actually was, I like DX/SS2 a lot but this feels like a much blander game overall. The zero gravity/flying/outdoors sections were also quite boring as well. Bioshock 2 normalizing the whole notion of exploring outside of the place where the game takes place was a dumb idea, I always thought that being confined to the area improved the atmosphere.

feels like Ganker deepthroats this game's wiener out of sheer contrarianism, it's far from an excellent game

I ran out of characters but another issue of Arkane's Prey is that often you are the one getting the drop on the enemy, and thanks to the sneaking being easy and the sneak attacks being powerful, it feels like the game doesn't challenge you enough. The only element of ambushes are the mimics, and they're probably the thing that works best. Phantoms can always be ambushed by you, there's just this lack of situations that feel threatening and that you're thrown into and and gotta scramble to resolve them. After you realize the enemies can be defeated easily with sneaking around, it's just boring. Those System Shock 2 type of games work better when the player doesn't have the massive advantage of being able to attack first and decide whenever the battles begin most of the times.

      >The two huge flying enemies felt similar in the way you fought them
If you're talking about Telepaths and Technopaths, you're out of your mind. Despite them looking basically the same, Technopaths are way harder since they try to stunlock you and get nearby turrets to aimbot you even if you hacked them before. Telepaths can't do shit in comparison
If you're talking about Weavers, though, those are way different, much more annoying with their shields, their fast movement and constant Cystoid spawning

I have no idea what you're talking about. No reference is ever made to weapons the player can't access. You find blueprints for pretty much every weapon the station is researching, even the portable turrets. Not that I disagree that the weapon selection is garbage, mind you

i don't think Ganker "deepthroats" the game at all, I think people on Ganker have very mixed opinions of the game. In this thread alone you have people who hate the game, people who love the game, people with lukewarm reception of it, people who clearly never played it but want to stir a fight (both praising and shitting on it), and people who clearly did play it and had genuine criticisms which they lay out clearly and in detail.
Ganker ain't one person and every prey thread is like this; a big mix of different positions.

people definitely deepthroat Prey 2017 in here, "people didn't buy it, it's 10/10 therefore it's proof positive nobody really wants immersive sims anymore" is said here and there, as if this game had no flaws and it should have sold trillions of copies

        >The two huge flying enemies felt similar in the way you fought them

I remember the fighting strategy for multiple flying enemies was the same of taking cover, their AI/behavior was not varied enough to me, which led to the blandness feeling. Nightmares also contribute to this too, they're basically a larger phantom, and the way they fought wasn't interesting enough.

I don't remember if the game justifies the lack of weaponry with written notes, but it's the problem of having a machine that can craft complex machinery with rags, nuts and bolts, and then you have a laughable arsenal. Humans being crafty, one has to wonder why can't someone else hack those machines to produce something better than "pistol and shotgun" for means of self defense.

You can do the nerf gun screen thing more than once, but the overall issue of Prey 2017 is that the original things it did, like the nerf gun on screens and the turning into an object felt gimmicky while the rest of the game felt like been there done that, the unlockable skills were rather forgettable, the whole game is quite forgettable to be honest, and certain parts of it have been done better before so why even bother.

          >I remember the fighting strategy for multiple flying enemies was the same of taking cover
You don't need cover for any of them
Technopath more or less requires stun gun while Weaver is annoying to do without turrets due to how fast it moves

          >Humans being crafty, one has to wonder why can't someone else hack those machines to produce something better than "pistol and shotgun" for means of self defense.
If you want a real answer, it's because Talos I is a research station that at best has a few security guards that are really only there for outbreak containment anyway. No one expected the situation to get so bad as to require military hardware, which you wouldn't have anyway since you work for a civilian company

and nobody in the station had the brains to hack and modify those devices to produce anything more than basic weaponry? Also the whole idea that basic small arms were all that was needed in this civilian facility, why the turrents with automatic guns in them, then? If you start thinking about it, shit just does not make sense, it ends being lame cop outs for the game barely having guns/weaponry

              >and nobody in the station had the brains to hack and modify those devices to produce anything more than basic weaponry?
Who would do this? Weapon designs don't just come out of thin air. Just because you know how to break into a device's server does not mean you have the engineering expertise to design a gun. The station's researchers did design some weapons, but it was mostly weird sci-fi stuff like the Q-beam. It makes more sense than SS2 having grenade launchers in an equivalent situation

              >why the turrents with automatic guns in them, then?
Frankly the turrets also aren't enough and a single Phantom can knock them over and wreck them easily. They overestimated what the turrets could do. Maybe justifiably so. One of the weapons not being discussed here is the Nullwave grenades that cancel the psychic powers of your enemies. If they had made enough of those, your basic chucklefrick on the station really wouldn't need anything more than a pistol or shotgun

                Anonymous

Those machines need to be repaired, there would need to be people in the station who know the ins and outs of those wonder-machines that can craft complex shit out of dog tags and scissor blades. There's this thing called smuggling that humans can do.

what sense does it make for the station to have automated turrets but the guards can only carry either pistols or shotguns again? If you trust a robotic thing with automatic weaponry, you would trust humans too. Like I said, this doesn't make a lot of sense, and the rationalizing sounds like coping for the subpar arsenal the game has.
