Is it over for Embracer?

>layoffs at Gearbox
>Tomb Raider studio is bleeding employees
>Knights of the Old Republic Remake cancelled
>Saints Row developers closed three months ago
>Embracer considering to sell Gearbox

Why did they spend these past few years buying up so many companies and IP if this is the end result?

they still have their one ace up their sleeve: the Deus Ex Remake
if they fuck that up, then it'll be unironically over for them

      Anonymous

problem: Deus Ex games take 4+ years to make now. HR took longer, MD took shorter but was built on the strong foundation of HR and rushed and lacked content. for a new DX to be good it would have to either build on top of the HR/MD formula again and take 3+ years or come up with a new formula, perhaps more classic without third person moments, and take 5 years to make.

everything about Embracer screams quarterly growth report BS, zero long-term plan.

Eidos Montreal are currently developing an open world game before they can make another Deus Ex game. It's still a long time before it happens, if ever.

        Anonymous

The open-world game Eidos is working on is Fable. Square Enix had both Crystal D and Eidos working as support studios for Microsoft before they sold them to Embracer and it's speculated the only reason Embracer got them in the first place was because Microsoft was having trouble getting Activision over the line and couldn't bid while Square needed the cash injection.

I wouldn't doubt MS getting them if Embracer's selling again.

i mean have they even done anything? all i heard is that they just kept acquiring studios and IP's and then just sit on them. like you still have to develop those games you know.

      Anonymous

they pretty much just bought studios and then told the do whatever you wanna do.
they were counting on money form certain investors that backed out last minute though which caused them to have to cut studios off.
the downfall of embracer has nothing to do with wokeness or anyhting politcal.
they told studios they could do whatever they wanted as long as it was profitable enough.
the thing that fucked them over was counting on money they didnt have and then planning around that money before they had it.

        Anonymous

I'm sure a lot of companies more or less do plan around money they don't yet have, seems like Embracer's issue was the sheer degree of overspending on relying on one big golden Saudi egg

It was a investment scam. Their plan was to show off as a industry giant with hundred of IPs (mostly dead and forgotten) and small sized studios to try to fool some dumb investors into sinking money in them. The plan backfired, not even the arabs wanted to waste money on them and now Embracer is minimizing the damage by firing everyone sknce they never made enough money to pay so many devs

You know how everyone is posting about investors and shareholders ruining gaming by rushing releases, pushing ESG bullshit, etc? Embracer is what you get when shareholders run the company: a bunch of retards with no idea what they're doing or have any clue how the industry works.
    >"You have to speculate to accumulate, so why don't we speculate and buy a bunch of hot, exciting gaming IPs?"
It's the venture capital equivalent of an old boomer buying a local restaurant or bar because "muh passive income", without realizing you can't just pump money into a business and expect to instantly reap rewards if you know nothing about how that business works, unless you're already so disgustingly wealthy you can weather the financial losses a failed business brings. oy vey

game studios do have worth as long as they have passionate, talented people working well as a team in them. but that "worth" usually disappears as soon as the studio is sold off. the only time buying a game studio is really worth it is if you are so beyond the concept of money that you simply do not care if you eat a 100 million loss, like microsoft
