      No.

It has a lot of potential, but ultimately no. It's carried entirely by nostalgia for the novelty and the brand, if that was Scrimblo's face on the box and not Mario's, you'd probably never hear about it.

      Ok, so question then:

What older games ARE really as good as they are hyped to be?

      and

What 3D platformers would you consider better than Super Mario 64?

N64 zeldas are still the pinnacle nearly 30 years later

The N64 Zeldas were the last good Zeldas before the series got watered down too hard. They had blood, Redeads that died and did not despawn, genuine mystery and eerie horror elements, characters that were tragic, cruel, and thoughtful... The tone never hit the same after Majora's Mask in 2000. It was made for a younger and broader audience ever since. As far as I am concerned, there weren't any 3D Zelda games that ever came close after.

                >The levels are no longer just open, flat planes.
plenty of 64 levels weren't "flat planes" and quite a few galaxy levels were similar to 64's

                Anonymous

The thing is, movement in galaxy suits the smaller planets and platforming challenges really well. At no point does it feel out of place.
Meanwhile, mario 64's moveset only really works in large areas, because of how momentum based it as, as well as the camera being physical among other things. It makes levels like TTC an absolute pain in the ass, the moveset wasnt designed with those levels in mind and it shows.

                Anonymous

They designed the movement first and the levels second so TTC was absolutely designed with the moveset in mind. I think the level is fine and the platforming is perfectly doable, it's just very punishing when you eventually frick something up

it's surprisingly opaque in terms of its game mechanics, which makes casual playthroughs less fun than they could be. Like, the game does a really terrible job of explaining a lot of the underlying mechanics behind its movement system and camera system

But once you understand how the movement works and the camera system it's really really cool. It's definitely a game you can easily sink thousands of hours into because of the depth of its movement, if you felt like it.

A lot of truth to this. I was bad when I played the game as a kid. I'm still bad at it but I'm a lot more familiar with the intricacies of the movement system now. A lot of odd things like infinite double jumping with kicks, triple jumping on slopes, a frame perfect walljump variation, and being able to walljump out of a backflip.
Hundreds of hours later and I still struggle with gauging the speed needed to dive instead of kick and vice versa

It was phenomenal and revolutionary for 1996 and it's still perfectly playable and enjoyable today. You can't say that for many retro 3D games.

64 runs on the mario brand and nostalgia for a different generation (not zoomers).
No idea why any zoomer would suck this one off except to be contrarian, because it is easily the worst 3d mario.
It is also the first, so it is understandable, but it is just not good.

      >changing direction is painfully slow
      learn 2 quickturn
also the sideflip is a redundant double jump, not backflick. Both are useful depending on the situation

Spin jump is just flat out better and makes most of the junk in the 64 move pool useless in comparison.
Going in across the stick turns you slowly.
Circling the stick around the edge turns you slowly.
Doesn't help when you approach a wall or corner and the camera decides to flip your forward into a different direction, but even in the field, the controls are really just sluggish.
Run forward, then stop running. He does some stupid little slide-y stop instead of just stopping. That is just bad controls.

You just want an even easier game. Mario feels awful without weight and momentum. Try playing thoughtfully with momentum in mind instead of like a sperg

I think it's probably the best, at least if you like deep schmovement
Odyssey and Sunshine have pretty decent movement too though

I've tried playing through it a few times but the controls and the camera felt like ass. Never had a problem with the other big N64 games like Banjo and OoT, though.

Zoomers shill this game more than boomers because of all the
    >Super Mario 64 is the scaries game ever
type of nonsense video game essays about it. They probably have not even played it at all.

If you stick within the context of the time it released in? Absolutely. One of the most influential 3D games ever made. It's movement and camera logic are the backbone of every 3D person game made nowadays. Like how every 3D engine has some Id Tech in them, every 3rd person game has Mario 64 in it.
Yes the camera logic by now is very flawed but it was literally the first game EVER to have a dynamic camera like that.

    Within the context of today?
It's fine, I guess. Movement still holds up. Camera is clunky by modern standards and level design is nothing to cry home about.

    >Ganker acting like no zoomers have played Mario 64
If you were one of those late 90's born kids you were in that weird transition period between the 5th and 6th gen, so a lot of them still ended up playing N64 games. And after that you have the shitloads of 2000's kids that emulated the game at some point because Mario 64 was one of the first 3D games you could emulate without it functioning like ass.

it's just not as common for zoomers to have played mario 64 compared to 90s kids where the 64 was ubiquitous

that's because this board is constantly shat up by out of touch millennials who can't stop yelling at clouds. I grew up with this game, on real hardware no less. Not emulation or virtual console, and tons of others have too. And even if we didn't, it's not like mario 64 is some fricking turbo obscure gem. it's fricking mario 64.
