Literally how? lol
Mine updates the same way as all my other programs -- when I open my update manager, click update, and enter my password -- and my shortcut never breaks because it's just using Exec=firefox or maybe Exec=/usr/bin/firefox.
If you have unattended upgrades enabled then that's a "you" problem, but I can't figure out how it's breaking your desktop entry. Like no offense but what did you do?? lmao

Entry-level distributions like ubuntu or manjaro are piss-easy to use even for someone who's probably never laid hands on a computer.
Doing basic shit like web surfing/bureautics/pdfs etc works well, steam has great support and there are a bunch of platforms like lutris to make compatibility easier.
You won't need to interact with the terminal 99% of the time but it's a pretty good tool so you'll inevitably learn about it just from copy-pasting commands you'll read on online tutorials.

Check protondb.com to see whether your favorite games work... if all you play is some game that's not supported it's probably not worth it.
As a rule of thumb, everything *should* work except for AAA and games with invasive anti-cheat software (again, check protondb).
Ah and forget getting access to the control panel of your nvidia graphics card, too.

This is the problem with a bloated distros, you don't know what anything does.

When you start as minimal as possible, and build from there, you know what everything does.

If something goes wrong, you probably know the name of the component causing it, and how to fix it.

this is a linux equivalent of removing system32. no, it's worse, you literally get a warning in plain english, and then you have to confirm it with an elaborate confirmation phrase just to make sure you really know what's going on. And even once you do it, reverting it back to normal is as simple as installing those packages again.

Except it didn't allow him to do that, after failing the install from GUI he opened terminal, used root privileges, and then he specifically had to try very very hard to ruin it. Yeah, repository issues like those are shit and he should be able to just install it, but you only get to see it on unstable distro channels, so he most likely switched to that.

No, it's not, even after this you can just type
sudo apt install pop-desktop
and will have working system. If you'll delete system32 you'll have borked system which even Microsoft recovery tool couldn't fix.

no, linux vidya is still not perfect
>how is linux gaming
Insanely good compared to the state of it 5 years ago or so. Install steam, install proton in steam, it just all runs, no tweaking, no configuration. Steam with proton and predefined configurations runs pretty much every game out of the box, and if you want to frick around, you can add a simple launch parameter and RTX vidya even runs with RTX in there. VR works too, I played and finished some VR games on Linux. The biggest tweak i had to do so far was installing one extra library with protontricks to make Recettear run on Deck, otherwise every single game ran with one click. Performance is still not equal to windows, though it's more than satisfactory, if I'd have to put a number on it, i'd say most demanding and convoluted games run at 80-90% of Windows framerates in there.
>Last time I installed Ubuntu it crashed once every few days
read logs, see what's happening, though it's weird that out of the box ubongo wasn't working well for you

I could easily switch to Linux entirely if I'd get any good reason to do that, at this point it runs just about anything, but I'm blessed with a beefy GPU. If my PC would be just barely enough for windows, it would be less than enough for linux. But since I have no good reason, I'm leaving windows where it is on dual boot, it's always nicer to get more frames when you want to vidya, and switching back to linux when you're done takes zero effort.

Still, good to see freetard stuff working well.

gayming is at odds with Linux and free software culture
linux is big on user freedom, open code, privacy concerns and decentralization
gaymes are rented software that have no user freedom and will stop working when the publisher takes servers offline after they are no longer feasible to maintain, most games are on closed source windows, all game programmers love programming on windows. most games try to be online and communicating with steam servers or publisher's servers as much as possible so there is no privacy and it's all controlled by corps so there is no decentralization.

linux and gaming are polar opposites and I don't see the two being reconciled anytime soon.

Anonymous

Corps are at odds with Linux and FSF culture.
I can still install games that are open source or DRM free and which don't phone home to servers or which let players run their own servers.
Piracy is also always an option.

Anonymous

there are very few games that are open source and have high production values.
also many of those considered "drm free" are still distributed through steam which is basically drm as far as Linux users are concerned since it needs to phone home at least once every month and by default is always online.
Piracy is pretty much dead because all the crackers got hired to develop denuvo

I love games but the culture around them is too consumerist and there isn't enough pushback against game companies and that will never align with free software philosophy. maybe Linux will have some kind of corporate support for games like they are doing with steam on Linux and Linux development itself these days is driven by corporate priorities, but the community if users is still pretty opposed to all that.

From Devops experience I'm feeling that computers didn't really changed that much, since for example in 70s and today you input commands line by line into terminal and expect it to work but most of the time it doesn't.

Anonymous

idk I think containers solved a lot of issues we used to have with packaging, scaling and security so I kinda like them.
it's true that under the hood computers are basically the same since forever, but in my experience stuff usually works when you type in commands. the problem with gaming stuff or steam stuff not working is that steam and games are closed source so when shit doesn't work, you don't know what went wrong. for other software on Linux you usually get detailed crash info so you know what broke and many times even the code is available to patch
>inb4 users don't patch software

Much better than it was when I switched, still really rough around the edges, some games won't work (especially online and those with anti-cheat). VR is still really bad, unless you're lucky and got a good hardware combination.

Linux is a meme os for servers and codetrannies. The only way it ever could be turned into a serious thing if some completely new form of PC comes out and some gigantic tech corp provides a Linux based software solution faster than MS does. Linux gaming is an even more dead form because servers and codetrannies don't care about games and the only corp that made a proof of concept solution for running games as a backup plan can't feel remotely assed to use the game tax to perfect it and is too chickenshit and lazy to enforce devs to support it.

There are like 99 games called Void, but let's go with the 2016 one. Have you tried multiple versions of Proton? Even GE?

>Native versions of games suck
95% of them just work for me.
I see the occasional broken port because Windowstard game devs outsource Linux ports to contractors and then don't know how to maintain them, but that doesn't mean native games are inherently bad.
If you think I'm wrong then explain which defects I missed in the Linux versions of Shovel Knight, Brigador, and Ziggurat.

>maintain
Probably this is the problem, since even if the Windows versions are not maintained, they just work. Atm my only example is Skullgirls where native has shadow bugs and gets updates late, while has none of those issues with Proton.

The Void/Turgor, from 2009 by the Pathologic studio. The way it handles shaders is weird. Once of the very old versions of Proton let me bypass the hard crash for a little bit, but they can't cope either.
There is a wine patch, but making a VM with direct gpu and ram seems simpler than making a custom Proton with that wine patch

If you don't play VR games on Nvidia cards, and don't play certain EAC games, absolutely. Unfortunately, I play VR games on Nvidia cards so I have to keep a windows partition around. SteamVR doesn't have motion smoothing yet on linux and that's kind of important. Wish valve would put more work in there. I give less of a frick about the EAC games, they usually have other problems like battle passes and excessive microtransactions.
>How is Linux gaming now?
Amazing, keeping the above statement I made in mind. Gamescope is a feature I sorely miss when I go back to windows. Everything I usually play I throw at my Steam Deck without even looking at ProtonDB or deck verified status and it just works.
>Last time I installed Ubuntu it crashed once every few days.
I don't use ubuntu I use EndeavourOS or Nobara Project so can't relate.

Windows has been relegated to a fallback OS when shit doesn't work and this does not happen often, which to me speaks volumes about how far linux gaming has come because I remember hating linux a decade ago because it had nogames and now for the most part the only nogames it has are stuff that's incredibly predatory on it's users to begin with.

Then again, I've reached a point in gaming where I can't tolerate the usual AAA bullshit anymore and I play a bunch of indie games, your mileage may vary.

VR works if your PC is strong enough you don't have to worry about re-projection being a broken feature
For nvidia with xorg you need your monitor refresh rates to match your headsets, that's all. or else you'll get frametiming jitters due to how xorg renders everything as one big monitor
AMD has the luxury of being able to use Wayland but Mutter (GNOME) lacks the drm-leasing that the devs keep refusing to merge so you'll have to be on KDE or another DE like i3 and I think Cinnamon should support it properly too. Or just use xorg and do what you would for nvidia
The problem is display managers and nvidia, the latter being the same reason Valve still haven't put out steam decks steamos3 to the public
You're right though Valve have all but abandoned SteamVR on Linux, which if you follow Deckard news is bizarre they should at least support their own headset properly, Alyx even has a native build that woks, it's bugs come from being Vulkan which is also busted on Windows

Anonymous

The main issue with NVIDIA is that they bypass the whole normal linux graphics stack and substitute their own
The only thing shared between them is libglvnd, which was supposed to (allegedly) solve this problem by allowing to select a GL implementation at runtime (similar functionality is baked into the vulkan standard, for reference) but it doesn't because NVIDIA's kernel module is still incompatible with the normal KMS DRM stack so they still can't coexist in a sane way

I just came from gaming on Linux for two months. Its still not up to par. About 40% of my catalog was unplayable.

The games that work, all had varying issues, either in performance or weird tweaks that needed to be done so that they'd run. Just weird shit too. Like cyberpunk would run at near max, and aaa games from like a gen or two ago wouldn't get above 30 fps, despite reports on protondb that they "ran perfectly".
Thats my main gripe. No one linux user has a similar experience. 5 people will report it runs perfect ootb, no tweaks, 3 more on the same day will post an enormous troubleshooting log of what they did to try and get the game to launch or run more than 30 fps.

I'm actually quite experienced with Linux too, since I work on it. I can't imagine non technically skilled people trying to learn how to troubleshoot wine/lutris or some shit, and don't even get me started on wine.

You need to read the reports on Protondb and see what users did to make the game run. For me, all the games I wanted to play eventually worked, but having gold rating doesn't mean the game will run without configuration.

My favoirite example is Sims 4, where running EA App and updating the game requires specific steps that aren't even described in the reports (hence some people don't manage to run it). But it's still "Gold".

Gold for me can be anything from binds, to launcher tweaks, to in game settings tinkering, and so on. I've had games that were gold that I also couldn't get respectable performance on at all and just gave up. But my hardware is more than enough for the game.

My only problem so far was that Origin launcher couldn't run on Deck, so I wouldn't be able to run new Assassin's Creeds. I tried CP77, Ace Combat 7, GTA4, My Summer Car, Elden Ring, Warband, many more, it all worked out of the box. Maybe I got lucky, but so far I had to tweak around only for one singular game, and it was Recettear, everything else worked the moment it was installed.

All Steam library though, non-steam games require you to prepare your own stuff I think. I tried running CP77 from gog, admittedly it worked out of the box but it never reached same performance as Steam version, on deck. I guess they probably prepare stuff to install into wineprefixes per game, so if you don't have it on Steam, you're on your own.

This weekend I'm installing proxmox, gonna build a Fedora VM and a Windows VM. If I only ever run one at a time, I should be able to use PCIe passthrough on both and give my GPU to either, that way I don't have to buy a second GPU or downgrade to a 5700G just for the host. Only thing I'm iffy about is whether hibernating a VM will keep the GPU passed through to it or not. It shouldn't because hibernating is essentially powering off the VM, but I am a bit worried it'll retain control of the device, meaning I'd have to close everything and power down a VM whenever I'd want to switch instead of just hibernating and keeping my progress.
Thanks for reading my blog.

can you still use gpu on linux after the vm is shut down?

Yeah. The way I got it set up, the Linux desktop opens up automatically after I shut down Windows and it takes control back of the GPU. It's super smooth.

Pretty much like this.

Elden Ring runs better on linux, multiplayer also works.

Yeah, it was actually famous for running much better on Linux than Windows when it initially launched.

It had zero microstutter issues at launch and ran better than the Windows version.

Why would you abandon the PC for Linux? This is like going over to Mac, it shows a profound sense of disloyalty. PC has always been the ultimate platform for gaming, and now you want to throw it away? For what?

This is a pretty good bait, even though I know you're baiting I'm still slightly upset by it. Insinuating that Windows is synonymous with PC, and especially that you should have any sort of loyalty towards a corporation and its products are both disgusting.

How do you guys run eroges?
Wine seems really hit or miss, even with wegs which shouldn't need winetricks locale or cjkfonts to run

Bottles with gamescope enabled and CJKFonts installed to the prefix.

DE/WM choice makes almost no difference as long as you're using Xorg with compositing disabled.

Let me tell you, the absolute best DE is without a dou- *krashes*

I say xfce or a WM.
Both super light on resources. Just make sure to disable compositor.

For me it's KDE, simply because you can configure it to automatically disable and re-enable the compositor with regular expressions matching to applications, instead of just when the application itself requests it.

I like KDE, but I feel like its being developed by tards and even x11 continues to become less and less stable.

If you're coming from Windows, and you've never used anything else, I highly recommend XFCE.
It is both instantly familiar enough to not be off-putting (like Gnome can be), and yet different enough from modern Windows that you won't get uncanny-valley reactions when something is different (like can happen with KDE).

It makes no difference with gaming. Pick your DE/WM by your general usage patterns instead.

These threads have been fascinating to watch unfold, the only people still shitposting linux are ESL or literal children
You never see a computer literate adult post about how they need the adobe suite for work and wine isn't good enough anymore. Just literal kids going
>BUT MUH PERFORMANCE LOSS
>WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS NEGLIGIBLE AT 5%
>NO ITS NOT TRUE YOU ARE LYING POSTING PHOTOSHOPPED SCREENSHOTS MARVINS MITTENS
Are twitchgays making PC gaming mainstream responsible for this? These kids aren't tech literate in the slightest but their self identity is clearly tied into being a PC gaming and a tech literate person, despite knowing even less than Linus does about how computers work
Back in the day PC gaming required fiddling and tweaking, it was standard procedure and now look at all these children shrieking they're expected to check protondb for a whole 3 minutes to copy paste launch commands into steam, just stick to windows if you can't handle using your brain
>but you guys keep bullying us for using windows and it hurts my feelings, I:m pc master race!!
Windows gaming is the console gaming of the 2020's
