The only difference I'm aware of is the base white only supported RF out of the box while the revised coregfx added an AV out port (which would result in stereo>mono obviously)

Apparently one was in the works around 4 years ago called the HuDebug, but I'm calling bullshit. The group who claimed they were working on it mostly sell transparent shells. People in the replies were asking the account questions abut the project and they've ignored them or gave vague answers.

Yeah that seems like bullshit. SSD3 seems legit now though even though it was a bit of a mess at launch.

I got mine back in 2020 and it was the revised board with the fixed audio and video. All the SSDS3s after the very first run had the color banding and audio issues fixed.

They updated the UI last year for the SSDS3 too, so now it's a lot more usable than it used to be. It used to be complete dogshit.
              >I and II for confirm and cancel were reversed
now you can select in the menu to reverse it back or keep it as-is
              >you needed to select to only show CD games or HuCard games while the other format would be invisible
now they all show up and you can select either or instead of going into another menu
              >you had to select what system card to boot from.
they added the option for per-game system cards so you can drag and drop the syscard file you want right into the game's folder in the SD card, or else it'll default to whatever you set it to.

Can you elaborate? I don’t think I was going to really hook anything up to it, and as for the power I would just use the standard adapter that came with it and a power brick.

After doing a bit of research, it seems 5V 2.5 amp is the killer, so people with RaspberryPi USB adapters in particular would have killed their PC Engine Mini’s right out the gate. Nintendo’s USB adapter seems to be fine, but the official HORI one seems to cause issues as well. There’s also a chance that the first batch just had some defective units as the issue practically becomes non-existent after 2021. It’s wild because it had 5,000+ positive reviews, so I guess the usb issue is relatively small.

… and looking a little more into it, the shimmering and usb issue does seem to have been addressed in the newer, 2022 run. I’ll just have to make sure I got that newer model when it arrives, and if not I’ll just contact Amazon and send it back.

Whelp, scratch all that. Looks like it’s a random chance of failing and it’s an absolute b***h to fix or replace. Thanks to the anon that gave me the heads up on this and not only saved me money, but heart ache. I love the novelty of mini-consoles and the game list for it looked fantastic, but there’s no point of buying a 100 dollar novelty when I’ll be constantly nervous of the day I turn it on and it suddenly doesn’t work any more.

I really do appreciate the heads up. If it was any later I probably would have been too late to cancel it.

I’ve followed numerous reviews and discussions and it sounds like even having the correct power supply doesn’t matter, which is what really worries me. People with the official HORI power supply had it fail, same with the Nintendo one, and the Raspberrypi one kills it consistently from the sounds of it. The problem is, I even followed several conversations where the person had theirs die in 2022 with the correct 5V 2A charger after 2 years of it having no issues at all, and the process to fix it looks like it requires some fairly specialized gear:

Mind you I don’t want to try and spook anyone out, or make them regret their purchase, but I kind of wonder if this is a retro red ring situation where all of them will have it happen eventually.

Also, if you end up watching that video, it looks like it comes down to HORI using some really cheap parts, so even replacing the part with a new one may only be a temporary fix. Great game selection, really fun UI, but it sounds like the hardware itself is… well… junk. Still, if yours isn’t having any issues there is nothing to say it actually will. It seems even the power thing is more of a guess than what may actually be causing it. They may just be defective units, though it does worry me to see people who are aware of the power issue still having their mini’s crap out years later. Either way, I hope your guys’ stay good for as long as you have them.

I think they just cut corners. The fact that the main chip that’s causing all the issues with the console is something that you can only get off Aliexpress and costs a dollar is kind of telling. It also doesn’t seem to kill the chip outright either as it still receives the correct voltage so the reason it suddenly dies and has to be replaced is up in the aircraft. The tear down of the console sadly looks like one of those Chinese knockoff consoles you see floating around so much now of days.

I said it above, but it’s sad that Konami actually put some effort into the software and chose a lot of really amazing games to throw on this thing, but the hardware just wasn’t up to snuff. I do kind of wonder if that was more Konami’s doing than HORI though as I doubt Konami wanted to throw too much money into something that wasn’t a Pachinko machine.

Also, you guys may want to just order a couple MA8601 chips off aliexpress just in case. If they ever stop making them and that chip goes bad you’ll be outa luck, and it sounds like Konami is no longer producing the mini’s. They are only a dollar so better safe than sorry.

i have the original hardware as well
there were millions made ill just repurchase the system if i get the dreaded issue anon

the hardware failure was caused by tards using the wrong plugs

although konami should have put better voltage regulation circuitry in the machine if they were going to make the ac adapter a separate purchase

            Anonymous

            >the hardware failure was caused by tards using the wrong plugs

Like I said, from what I read that seems to be the main culprit, but other people who were aware of this issue had theirs go out randomly two years later.

Just figured I’d give the heads up to those anons who really liked theirs just in case as it really wouldn’t hurt to have a couple of those chips around at 1 dollar a pop, though looking at the price trend on Japanese mini’s sold on Amazon.jp, it’s doesn’t look like the price appreciates all that much on discontinued mini hardware for now at the very least.

Why yes, the Jaguar had a pair of really powerful CPUs. Jaguar's problem was it lacked a 3D calculation processor, the 3DO saturn and ps1 had that, but it was the only console back in the day powerful enough to run Doom in 16 million colors merely with software rendering, thanks to the 64 bit blitter.

Consider they manufactured a system that was originally meant to combat the NES, managed survive just long compete with the 16 bit machines, and their ultimate successor to it was a mongrel console/computer device that favored FMV when even morons at Sega knew polygons were the next big thing. The PC-FX is only good for reminding even Saturn owners they could've had it worse.
