Standalone VR is shit and morons like you contribute to the death of full roomscale vr in favor of phone graphics. Standalone isnt real VR its the modern equivalent to google cardboard

no problem. i dont know much about VR so it's why I wanted to ask and everybody else seems to shill zucks device. I will probably just end up saving money for a better gpu and get whatever headset comes out in the near future. What would you say is the best setup currently?

Op you should be good with a i5 or i7 + 2060/3060 2070/3070 and higher are great for VR so basically any midrange can play pcvr

Thanks anon. What would you consider mid-range? It seems like that phrase has lots its meaning overtime. Would something like a 10 series card be good for something like Alyx?

This is why VR will remain niche. Nobody want to spend a gorillan dollars on a headset and pc where you need an entire dedicated space.

VR was never made for a mobile phone processor, the fact it can is cool and should be left at that, standalone graphics will age so poorly, its massively holding back VR when the most popular headset it essentially a phone strapped to your head, when everyone is developing for low end. Its like if people still kept making games for the ps1 even though theres been a PS5 for sometime

          >its massively holding back VR
VR headsets aren't mobile phones or the newest useless designer item so people aren't going to blow money on that the same way that they would those items every year or so. AAA groundbreaking graphics on VR made by huge publishers is not going to happen if the market for it is still niche. Not many people own a gpu powerful enough to give you that experience let alone something like a full index setup. VR has to appeal to the lowest common denominator for now.

            Anonymous

I understand that, but why massively hamper the experience for accesibility? Im not saying the invention of standalone is bad, but only the sole focus of it is holding VR back, ever since the quest 1 and abandonment of the Rift S the only other real PCVr focused headset we've had is the index and that was in 2019. If companies werent so focused with cramping a mobile processor in the headsets, we couldve proably already had very lightweight, high res HMDs. But we are stuck with fresenel lens and just now only seeing upgrades to pancake lenses across VR, it wouldve have taken so long if the internals werent also a focus (xr2 and all its cooling needs space)

how? we reject shitty mobile tier games like the quest is pumping out.

Its a fricking simple equation of supply and demand.
People on Quest did not just chosen cheaper VR, they did so because they didn't want sensors shit up the room, upgrade PC in most cancerous GPU scalping period ever AND pay more for VR.
Without that there would be no extra demand for VR games.
Games that do not require massive modeling department, because they do not need them in VR as long as it has good artstyle and detail budget.

Now if you take those Quests away, you only have a fraction of population that has specs for PCVR (lol Steamcharts) and they have also high standards.
          So you have 2 options
          >make expensive games (that WILL be pirated) for small audience
          >quit VR

Without bacteria in dirt you will have no trees and animals.

the console contract won't allow it to ship VR only for some platforms, for example xbox doesn't support any VR

This is not exactly a profitable endeavor.
Most of the games that do this were just made by small companies testing the waters.

The testing of the mode alone is very taxing.

This is how VR works by default.
Quest also gives you option between hooking to your PC by cord, or by wireless connection to WIFi router.
As long as you can splurge on one without being worried that one controller is damaged, go for it.

Standalone is fine. The problem is that these frickwads keep releasing a closed ecosystem every time instead of adhering to open standards so you're stuck with inept corporate solutions. The tracking systems on these controllers can't be that incompatible for instance.

      >its massively holding back VR
VR headsets aren't mobile phones or the newest useless designer item so people aren't going to blow money on that the same way that they would those items every year or so. Fair, but we're running into the same problem as smartphones with companies selling you devices you practically don't own with an incredible amount of planned obsolescence.

Why not just makes games with a VR option?
Like cool, just add VR cam, motion controls and whatever other controller specific shit you can add

Companies profit off of the stagnancy of console interface methods. If they drastically shift the market then they would have to hire creative talent to keep up with new demand. The gyroscope went unused for most of the PS4's lifespan because companies did not want to rock the boat.

If this sounds worth the price of admission I would go for it. However, if you ever upgrade your PC the quest 2 becomes more valuable as you can simply play pcvr games and stream it to your headset with no noticeable latency. otherwise you could get a cord if your internet cannot stream it properly.
